At the 25th Costume Designers Guild Awards (CDGAs) on Feb. 27 at L.A.’s Fairmont Century Plaza, special honorees will include costume designers Deborah L. Scott (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Rachael M. Stanley (Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Ally McBeal); Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Oscar nominee Angela Bassett, who will receive the Spotlight Award; and Bette Midler, who will be recognized with the Distinguished Collaborator Award.
Midler jokes with THR that the Costume Designers Guild award recognizes her “willingness to stand in front of a mirror for hours on end! What could be more delightful?” All kidding aside, Midler continues, “A great costume is like a second skin; you feel as if you belong in it. It’s very freeing because it provides so much information to the audience, and you don’t have to work so hard.”

Rachael Stanley, the longtime executive director of the Costume Designers Guild, IATSE Local 892, has retired. Before she started working for the union in 2004, Stanley designed costumes on such shows as Ally McBeal, Sisters and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. She has been succeeded in the post by Brigitta Romanov, formerly the local’s assistant executive director, who designed costumes on Glee.
Stanley said that she is most proud of the work she’s done to educate her members about negotiating deals above the minimum scale provided for in the local’s contracts. “It’s a very well-kept secret in the industry that a female- and gay men-dominated local is one of the very lowest paid in the industry,” she told Deadline, noting that about 86% of the local’s members are women.
To educate members about their rights to negotiate deals above scale, she has taught seminars for IATSE members in the U.

For below-the-line workers, it had been a time of intense production and booming work until just a few days ago. The industry had an unprecedented amount of projects on the books, and freelance workers had perhaps relaxed a little, knowing there was work available, with back-to-back jobs booked in. Until all of it was taken away, essentially overnight. Addressing the Covid-19 shutdowns with the costume design community, we found stories of disappointment, worry, and confusion, but also a sense of resilience, determination and hope.
A designer who recently wrapped Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Hollywood, Sarah Evelyn was hard at work before the production shutdowns hit. “When you’re a costume designer, you’re used to spending a lot of time away from home—and all of a sudden, I’m going from being on a job to homeschooling kids,” the costume designer says. “It’s a major adjustment, on every single level.

Costume designer Jennifer Johnson was blissfully unaware that she was less valued than her peers until she was given the wrong paycheck and discovered that the production designer she was working with on a low-budget film was getting paid a thousand dollars a week more than she was.
“I took it for granted that I was the head of a department, the same as production designers, and surely we were getting paid the same,” says Johnson.
Maybe she was a bit naïve. And maybe her lower pay rate was a result of gender bias against a guild that is predominantly female.
While there are a handful of Oscar-winning costume designers who can command $8,000 a week, that’s not the financial reality for most in the profession. Under the basic agreement between the Intl. Oscar-nominated costume designer who dressed Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand
Now that television talent contests are gussied up to Vegas standards, it's less easy to appreciate the discreet glamour that was the speciality of Ray Aghayan, who has died aged 83. But for 60 years, he guaranteed that difficult divas would arrive on screens and stages projecting perfection. Glamour was so much his habitat that he supervised over a dozen Oscar shows.
His initial diva, he remembered, was even more terrifying than Barbra Streisand: Princess Fawzia of Egypt, first wife of the last Shah of Iran, a woman of movie appearance and wilfulness. Aghayan came from an Armenian family in Tehran, and his widowed mother, Yasmine, designed clothes for the ruling Pahlavi family; the boy, starstruck by Hollywood, was certain he, too, could create, and the amused Fawzia summoned him via her ladies in waiting.
