Back in 2000, director Ridley Scott took us back to 180 Ad for Gladiator, which told the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe), who is favored by Emperor Marcus Aurelius to be his successor because his own son, Commodus, is unfit to rule. Commodus disagrees, so he murders his father, has Maximus arrested, and has Maximus’s wife and son killed. While Commodus establishes himself as the new emperor, Maximus escapes from captivity – only to be captured again, this time by slavers who sell him off to become a gladiator. Soon he’s fighting in front of Commodus in Rome’s Colosseum… and it all builds up to Commodus challenging Maximus to a duel. Gladiator was a major box office success and racked up multiple Academy Award wins, including Best Picture. So there was already talk of a sequel in 2001, but it ended up taking more than...

Courtney Love has never been shy when it comes to sharing her opinions about other people. Going all the way back to the early Nineties, the Hole singer has generated headlines by publicly trashing rock musicians, pop singers, movie stars, and even members of her own family. It’s a level of brutal candor you rarely see with public figures, but as Courtney Love told Rolling Stone in 1994, she simply doesn’t care what others think about her. “If people try to put me in the crazy box–’crazy fucking Courtney’–go ahead,...

Alison Brie has responded to Chevy Chase’s remarks about Community not being funny and “hard hitting” enough.
While appearing on Watch What Happens Live on Monday night, the Apples Never Fall star was asked by a fan what she thought about her former co-star’s comments.
Brie, who noted that the remark was made on her former Glow co-star Marc Maron’s Wtf podcast, of which she’s an avid listener, said she heard the comment live before it was covered online. “I actually think that was the better way to digest that information because I could hear Chevy’s tone,” she explained. “When you read it on a headline, it reads much harsher. Exclusive: In a move that points to a change in direction he will take at the helm of Disney live action and 20th Century Studios, former Searchlight co-head David Greenbaum has made his first big statement buy, and it’s set to the music of Bruce Springsteen’s seminal album Nebraska.
20th Century has closed a deal to finance and release Deliver Me from Nowhere, the narrative film that Scott Cooper is writing to direct with Emmy-winning The Bear star Jeremy Allen White playing The Boss in a pivotal moment in his life. When Deadline revealed that the project was coming together, A24 was expected to be the distributor.

Throughout its six season run, "Community" encountered a genuinely impressive set of challenges. First of all, series creator, Dan Harmon, was kicked off his own show, which considering his behavior wasn't all that shocking. An admitted heavy drinker, Harmon also became notorious for what The Hollywood Reporter referred to as his "eleventh-hour rewrites, or 'Harmon passes,'" which he would foist upon the cast and crew during filming. Harmon also fell out with star Chevy Chase, and the show was known for its long shooting days and erratic schedule. No wonder Alison Brie described the "Community" set as "frantic, frenetic, chaotic"
Then, there was the constant threat of cancellation, which loomed over "Community" until the show was actually canceled by NBC after its fifth season. Yahoo's then-new streaming service, Yahoo! Screen, picked up the show for its sixth and final season that seemed destined to fail. And fail it did.

Actor Joel McHale reflected on an altercation he had with his fellow Community co-star Chevy Chase that occurred on the set.
McHale, known for his main character role as Jeff Winger on the TV series, has been candid about disagreements that reportedly transpired between himself and Chase, who played the controversial offensive character Pierce Hawthorne. McHale even dedicated a chapter of his 2016 memoir, Thanks for the Money, to a “step-by-step on how to fight Chevy Chase.”
The topic arose in the podcast conversation when McHale highlighted his willingness to address the conflicts that arose with Chase while they were on the show. When asked about the nature of the incidents, McHale revealed that physical altercations did occur, with instances where one shoved or pushed the other. McHale described the confrontations as “advanced horseplay,” and humorously remarked, “You know, horseplay, and then it always turned into sex. It wasn’t fun.

In the 95 years that they’ve been handing out Academy Awards, just 10 African-American actresses have won dating back to Hattie McDaniel’s famed supporting actress triumph for “Gone with the Wind” in 1940. Nine of those wins have come in Best Supporting Actress, with Halle Berry being the lone victor in Best Lead Actress for “Monster’s Ball” in 2002. Berry has expressed disappointment that no other Black winner has followed in her footsteps over the past two decades. But the truth is that while it was 51 years between McDaniel’s win and the second for Whoopi Goldberg in “Ghost” in 1991, things have improved significantly over the past few decades for African American actresses and actors in terms of winning at the Oscars in the supporting categories in particular.

Zoe Lister-Jones was proud to attend Sunday’s Spirit Awards, and the reason is twofold. First, the multihyphenate talent turned up in Santa Monica to support a pair of nominations for Roku’s Slip, the original series she created, starred in and executive produced alongside a team that includes Dakota Johnson. Reason No. 2: She did so by walking into the event hand-in-hand with a new love in her life.
When the subject of her plus-one came up during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old Lister-Jones responded with a big reveal: “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it.” Lister-Jones is in a new relationship with a fellow filmmaker, Sammi Cohen, who most recently directed Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, the teen comedy starring Adam Sandler and family including wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny.

Acast, the world’s largest independent podcast company and home to the most valuable podcast marketplace has worked with subculture specialists Weirdo to launch “Get Closer To Your Audience”, its biggest ever B2B brand campaign aimed at brands, marketers and advertisers. Rejecting the corporate conventions of B2B marketing, this Valentine’s Day, the campaign playfully connects dating and paid media marketing thanks to the performance talent of Acast podcaster and comedian Katherine Ryan.
The two commercials begin with Ryan, playing the role of a dating expert, seated in a corporate office with eyes locked on the camera. The fluorescent lighting dims, candles begin to flicker, and the mood heats up as Ryan begins to speak. Christopher Nolan is a big fan of movies that are much more smaller-scale dramas like “Aftersun” (“a beautiful film”) and “Past Lives” (“subtle in a beautiful sort of way”) compared to his own output, he recently told Time magazine, but he’s probably never going to make them. Nolan got his start with indie productions like “Memento,” but he’s now famous for assembling blockbuster productions with huge sets and pricey budgets. He’s likely never going back to a more subtle production style.
“I’m drawn to working at a large scale because I know how fragile the opportunity to marshal those resources is,” Nolan told the publication about sticking with big productions. “I know that there are so many filmmakers out there in the world who would give their eye teeth to have the resources I put together, and I feel I have the responsibility to use them...

Tom Johnson, who received two Emmy Awards for his writing on The Daily Show, has died. He was 55.
Johnson died “peacefully and unexpectedly” at his Los Angeles home on Jan. 14 of a cardiac issue, his wife, actress Rozie Bacchi, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“He never got to eat the Texas toast he was making, or the 4 lbs. of crab legs he found on sale and crammed in the freezer two nights prior,” she said in a statement.
“Tom had such a big heart and cared deeply about taking care of others. His work ethic was impeccable. He was fair, kind, talented, inclusive and funny as hell.”
Born on July 25, 1968, in Fairfax, Virginia, Johnson began his career after college and founded the Network Comedy Troupe. He also toured as a comedian and performed at venues across the country and on television.

Contrary to what you may have heard, being a TV writer isn’t solely about the interminable daily ritual of placing, receiving and consuming each afternoon’s rigorously debated lunch order. No—there are also fantasy football teams to be managed and Nerf basketballs to be bounced from one end of the workspace to the other. That, plus the tricky business of using one’s imagination to dream up the characters, storylines and dialogue that so many millions of people around the world build their lives around, e.g. a highly demanding creative act that often requires just as much strategic distraction as it does pure artistic inspiration. And all this is even before we even get to strikes, AI and a post-Peak TV landscape where the number of shows are actually contracting for the first time this century.
So yeah—it’s a hard industry to build a career in.

The craziest thing about the "Alien" franchise is just how much of its success seems to have come about at least partially by accident, or by improvisation. By the second movie, Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley had been firmly established as the face of the franchise, as well as one of the most beloved sci-fi leads of all time, but in the original script for "Alien" her character wasn't even supposed to be a woman. Even after Ripley's gender was flipped, the decision to let her survive had little to do with feminism or making Ripley into a franchise lead, but just with subverting expectations. "No one on that film was a feminist," Sigourney Weaver said in a 2006 interview. "Everyone thought, 'Who will ever think the woman is gonna be the survivor?' So it was just one big gag."
There's a common fun fact thrown around about "Alien...

Peacock’s movie Genie delivered a solid opening for Peacock during Thanksgiving week — big enough, in fact, to rank as the streamer’s biggest original film to date.
The holiday comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu premiered Nov. 22 on Peacock and drew about 405 million minutes of viewing time over its first five days, according to Nielsen figures (the full streaming top 10 charts for Thanksgiving week will be available later in December). It’s set to rank seventh among movies for that week, which typically sees a number of holiday favorites (a la Home Alone and Elf) re-enter the streaming charts.
The 405 million minutes of watch time for Genie is the equivalent of about 4.35 million complete showings of the 93-minute film (which is the now-codified standard for a “view” of a streaming movie or series).
Genie stars McCarthy as Flora, a genie who’s been trapped for more than 2,000 years inside an antique jewelry box.

“Barbie” screenwriters Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach joined one another for a “60 Minutes” interview in which they were asked about the surprising “anti-man” backlash to their blockbuster comedy. Several conservative figures blasted “Barbie” after it opened in theaters over the summer for its patriarchy jokes, which they perceived as being anti-man. Bill Maher even went on record calling the film “man-hating.”
“The movie is meant to be a big-hearted thing, even though it’s poking fun at everyone,” Gerwig said when such accusations were brought up in the interview. “I planned this in my head. I’ll just say it. This is not man-hating anymore than Aristophanes’ ‘Lysistrata’ was man-hating. That doesn’t sound like a sick burn when you say it out loud like that. That will teach them!”

You have to really watch your language when hanging out with a genie. Especially a genie who can grant unlimited wishes. After all, it’s too easy to utter the words “I wish” when you don’t really mean them, and the result could be that you accidentally send someone directly to Hell. So please, please, be careful what you say.
If that warning seems a bit fanciful, then you haven’t seen the new holiday-themed Christmas movie premiering on Peacock. Genie features so many jokes revolving around characters carelessly uttering “I wish” only to have to quickly reverse themselves that the film seems more like a public service announcement than a would-be holiday classic.

I was always under the impression that Blumhouse’s Prime Video cannibal series The Horror of Dolores Roach (read our review Here) was going to be an eight episode limited series, but apparently there was hope for a second season, because The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Prime Video has decided to cancel the show. So the eight episode first season is all we’re getting after all.
The news of the cancellation comes four months after all eight episodes of The Horror of Dolores Roach were released on the same day back in July.
Based on the Gimlet podcast of the same name, The Horror of Dolores Roach came from Blumhouse Television, Gimlet, and GloNation Studios. The show tells the following story: After serving a 16-year prison sentence, the title character (Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Based on the hit podcast, Prime Video debuted the Amazon Original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach” this past July, and we’ve learned the series has been cancelled.
After just one season, “The Horror of Dolores Roach” is no more at Prime Video.
Justina Machado starred in the first season of “Dolores Roach.”
The eight-episode, half-hour series is a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale, a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.
In the series, “Dolores Roach is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, Dolores reunites with an old stoner buddy, Luis, who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his dilapidated storefront, Empanada Loca, the only remnant of her former life.

Jack Nicholson technically hasn’t announced his formal retirement from the film biz, but it sure sounds like he’s still enjoying his time off. On a recent episode of Wtf with Marc Maron, the actor’s longtime record producer pal Lou Adler said he’s still turning down acting jobs in favor of other more leisurely activities like, say, sitting under a tree and reading a book.
The interview was just to wrap up when host Maron had to ask Adler how Nicholson was doing. “He’s doing whatever he wants to do,” Adler responded, reminiscing on the Lakers games the two octogenarians would often attend together. “He wants to be quiet. He wants to eat what he wants. He wants to live the life he wants.”
“A friend of mine wanted to put him in a movie,” Maron recalled. “And he had a conversation with him. But Jack says,...

An actor so iconic, he’s sometimes referred to simply as “Jack.” With many classic movies and classic performances under his belt, plus an impression that people like to do, Jack Nicholson has been sealed in film history as one of the boldest actors in history. Jack’s career spans decades with some of the most notable movies in cinema, including The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Batman, Wolf, As Good As It Gets and The Departed. Jack’s been out of the game for a while, and for someone so famous, even the paparazzi rarely catch him anywhere, except at Los Angeles Lakers games as a notorious fan.
Jack’s last film was a low-key supporting role in a comedy that may not be known to too many people. Thirteen years ago, he appeared in the 2010 movie How Do You Know — a romcom from his As Good As It Gets director,...

The Academy Awards recruited Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane to host the 85th Oscars. But not everyone was happy with the way MacFarlane handled the ceremony, including Jamie Lee Curtis.
Jamie Lee Curtis criticized the way Seth MacFarlane hosted the Oscars Jamie Lee Curtis | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
MacFarlane injected some of his own Family Guy humor into the Academy Awards. Back in 2013, his Oscars celebration was full of satirical humor and musical numbers poking fun at the film industry. For instance, MacFarlane prepared Oscar-viewers and attendees for what’s to come with a song titled “We Saw Your Boobs.” As the name suggests, the song focused on the many A-listers in Hollywood who went topless on screen.
The song was as famous as it was infamous depending on who was asked. Although some enjoyed the piece, others felt MacFarlane went too far. Curtis was in the camp of the latter.

Richard Curtis, the prolific writer-director behind Love Actually, is gifting audiences yet another holiday comedy this year. Set to release on Nov. 22 on Peacock, Genie stars Melissa McCarthy as Flora, a wish-granting being summoned by hapless workaholic Bernard, played by Paapa Essiedu.
The trailer is filled with Curtis’ signature feel-good, witty banter and sparkly shots of Christmas tinsel in the background. Flora literally poofs into Bernard’s life when he needs it the most — he’s missed his daughter’s birthday, his wife has left him, and his boss has given him the boot.
