Ian McNeice went to Taunton School in Somerset and then had two years at the Salisbury Playhouse as an Acting A.S.M. before going to L.A.M.D.A. 1971-74. The next few years were spent in theatre, including four years with the Royal Shakespeare Company, ending with "Nicholas Nickleby" on Broadway. His TV breakthrough was as Harcourt in the B.A.F.T.A award-wining series Edge of Darkness (1985). His American screen breakthrough was playing opposite Jim Carrey as Fulton Greenwall in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995).

McNeice's three children by Kate Nicholls - Travers, Angus, and Maisie McNeice - live in the Bush, in Botswana, Africa. They have written a book called "The Lion Children" (published by Orion Books in September 2001). The book is about their life in the Bush with their mother and step father, who are lion researchers.
Has been in one episode each of both British historical fiction military characters Richard Sharpe and Horatio Hornblower.
He was considered for the role of Horace Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009).
Starred in the 1989 miniseries Around the World in 80 Days (1989) as Batcular, and the 2004 movie Around the World in 80 Days (2004) as Col. Kitchener.
Divides his time between London and Los Angeles yearly. [April 2001]
