It was announced two years ago that filmmaker Christophe Gans would return to the Silent Hill franchise with the appropriately titled Return to Silent Hill, an adaptation of Silent Hill 2. While that sounds exciting, Bloober Team’s video game remake that was released last month serves as a potent reminder that translating this revered game to screen is an exceedingly tricky task.

The filmmaker adapted the original 1999 video game with 2006’s Silent Hill that mostly adhered to the original game’s plot, remixing a few details for its film adaptation, like swapping out the game’s protagonist of Harry Mason for Radha Mitchell’s Rose Da Silva. It also included the appearance of the franchise’s most iconic monster, Pyramid Head.

The unsettling executioner with a massive rust-hued, pyramid-shaped helmet and unwieldy sword doesn’t actually appear until Silent Hill 2, prompting the game’s fans to cry foul for good reason.

Blue Fox Entertainment has acquired the distribution rights to the true-events-inspired feature film, “Lost on a Mountain In Maine,” which will begin its theatrical run on Nov. 1.

Today, Prime Video and Amazon Freevee announced the second season of the gripping Australian crime series Troppo will premiere on July 25.

Netflix‘s Man on Fire is ready to turn up the heat with Yahya Abdul-Matten II as its lead. In addition to his starring role, Abdul-Mateen II is an executive producer of the project, with Steven Caple Jr. directing the first two episodes. A.J. Quinnell’s first two novels, “Man on Fire” and “The Perfect Kill,” inspired the episodic adaptation focusing on French Foreign Legion soldier John Creasy.

Denzel Washington played John W. Creasy in the Tony Scott-directed feature adaptation Man on Fire. Christopher Walken, Dakota Fanning, Radha Mitchell, and Marc Anthony round out the primary cast. The plot focuses on a former CIA operative who swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect.

The “Silent Hill” film franchise continues with “Return to Silent Hill,” the latest adaptation of the hit horror anthology video game series. Variety has the first look at the famed monster Pyramid Head in the Christophe Gans-directed film, which is previewing at the Cannes Film Festival.

After helming the “Silent Hill” in 2006, Gans returns to direct the next installment from a script he co-with Sandra Vo-Anh and William Josef Schneider. The project is produced by Victor Hadida for Davis Films, Molly Hassell for Hassell Free Productions and David Wulf.

“Return to Silent Hill” is based on “Silent Hill 2,” the second and most popular game in Konami’s successful video game series, which has been named to top video game lists by Time Magazine, IGN and more. Originally released in 2001 for PlayStation 2, “Silent Hill 2,” is widely considered the best game in the series (and introduced the Pyramid Head character.

There’s a solid chance this month’s edition of “Revenge of the Remakes” ends up as one of my favorite column entries. George A. Romero’s The Crazies and Breck Eisner’s The Crazies inspire an exceptional case study about the peaceful coexistence between remakes and originals. Both filmmakers choose unique perspectives when dooming small-town America, even though the early 1970s and dawning 2010s validate eerily similar conspiracy paranoias. Stacking these Trixie-toxin thrillers back-to-back validates why remakes aren’t here to piss all over your safe, swaddling nostalgia blankets. Remakes aren’t the enemy — they’re a golden opportunity.

Romero’s The Crazies could only accomplish so much as a commentary against bureaucratic incompetence given the $270K budget. It benefits from a facelift, much like how Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes reaches its full potential as a bloodthirsty 2000s revamp. That’s not a shot at legends...

Australian series Troppo will travel across Europe, thanks to new deals for the crime drama starring Thomas Jane and Nicole Chamoun.

Canal+ Group’s thriller channel Polar+ snatched up pay, streaming and sell-through rights to it for French-speaking territories, and AMC Networks Central Europe acquired free, pay and streaming rights for the show, which premiered on Australia’s ABC and debuted on Amazon Freevee in the U.S. in May 2022.

RTP2 Portugal snatched up free-tv rights in the territory, while Amazon Freevee has Troppo for Germany and the U.K., and Scandinavian pay-tv group Viaplay carries the show in the Nordics.

The 2000s was a strange time for genre filmmaking and especially science fiction. While sci-fi cinema was in theory thriving, that was mainly thanks to the presence of franchises that were, in fact, their own mini-genres (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Then there were superhero films, always sort of a cousin to sci-fi, with the X-Men and Spider-Man series both exploding and the Marvel Cinematic Universe making its debut with Iron Man (2008) just as the decade came to a close.

But there were some top-shelf literary adaptations as well. The Rosenzweig Group has signed rising Australian actor Xavier Molyneux for representation in all areas.

Molyneux can currently be seen in Amazon Freevee’s reboot of the Australian series Neighbours in the role of Byron Stone.

Earlier this year, Molyneux made his film debut in Take My Hand, a romantic drama starring Radha Mitchell (Finding Neverland), Adam Demos (UnReal), Bart Edwards (The Witcher) and Meg Fraser (Bloody Hell). Molyneux plays a young Adam Demos in the film, which is currently in post-production.

Molyneux continues to be repped by Benchmark Creative Management in Australia.

The Rosenzweig Group is a management and production company founded by Marni Rosenzweig in 2018. The company has film, television and podcast projects at various stages of development and production and their clients include Patrick Adams, Clayton Cardenas, Glynn Turman and Sandra Bernhard.

Denzel Washington is back for one more round as the justice-driven Robert McCall in “The Equalizer 3”. On Tuesday, Sony Pictures released the first trailer for the upcoming film, which marks the final entry of the Antoine Fuqua-directed franchise.

Rebooted from the ’80s television series of the same name, “The Equalizer” films star Washington as a retired U.S. Marine and former Dia officer, whose desire to dole out justice in his own way and help those being oppressed often pulls him back into dangerous missions. The first premiered in theaters in 2014 and the second in 2018.

“Equalizer 3” has a similar plot as its predecessors, following Washington’s McCall as he struggles to reconcile the horrific things he’s done in the past and finds a strange solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed.

When "Alien 3" was released in 1992, it was roundly bashed by critics, met with uproar by fans, and later disowned by its director, David Fincher. Despite this, the troubled production and intrigue around Fincher's original vision have made it a constant source of fascination for "Alien" aficionados. One of the many subplots was the input of David Twohy, one of several writers involved in the film and whose biggest contribution was the setting of a prison planet populated by shaven-headed criminals.

They’re back. Rlje Films presents the Stephen King reboot Children of the Corn by Kurt Wimmer on 500+ screens. It’s a redo of the classic 1984 slasher-horror film about kids possessed by a demonic spirit in a dying cornfield, with bloody, rampaging results.

King’s iconic short story features a 12-year-old Nebraska girl who recruits the kids in her small town for a killing spree of all the adults, and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival. There are some new twists, in Wimmer’s version, the corn is genetically modified. Starring Elena Kampouris, Kate Moyer, Callan Mulvey and Bruce Spence.

The story is great, spawning numerous spinoffs beginning with Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice in 1992 followed by Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest in 1995. Most went direct to video.

In the year 2000, before the world started standing in line for tickets to the latest "Fast & Furious" film, a genre flick hit theaters. It was "Pitch Black," directed by David Twohy and starring Vin Diesel, Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, and Keith David.

The story is set in the future as a spacecraft takes travelers to different planets. On the trip are an Imam and his followers, a merchant, some teenagers, the crew of the ship, and more. Richard B. Riddick (Diesel) is also on board; he's a dangerous criminal whose eyes have been surgically altered to see better in low light, so he wears goggles in the sun.

The ship crashes on a desert planet that never sees darkness ... that is, until an eclipse happens. Darkness falls, and creatures reveal themselves, and they are very excited about snacking on humans.

This film’s daytime-soap vibes render an unquestionably inspiring true story into an experience that feels entirely false

There is much to be inspired by in the real-life story of Jessica Watson, who, at 16, famously set out to become the youngest person to sail solo, nonstop and unassisted around the world. But translating that solitude-filled 210 day voyage into interesting drama for the screen is no easy task - as director Sarah Spillane’s gloppy, goofily executed and terribly twee Netflix film reminds us. It’s impossible to predict how any title will fare on the streaming platform, but I’ll be surprised if this one isn’t quickly lost in the algorithms.

Hey, remember 2020 quarantine? That’s a joke — of course you do. Not only was it the most disruptive worldwide event of the last five years, it has also been exhaustively mined for content. Only three years out, it already feels like all the articles, books, social media posts, paintings, films, and TV shows that could be made about quarantine have already been made. Such is the nature of our rapid-fire online world. If you want to say something about the pandemic lockdown, it’d better be inventive. Like, a-Zoom-seance-killed-all-my-friends inventive.

Unfortunately, “Life Upside Down” makes no such contributions. This second feature from the writer-director Cecilia Miniucchi (“Expired”) uses the expected pandemic filmmaking gimmicks — actors filmed their scenes on phones and computers as Miniucchi directed them remotely — to produce a cringe-inducing melodrama. In this undercooked tale of middle-aged romance, there is nobody to root for and nothing of interest. All there...

In 2000, Vin Diesel (the "Fast & Furious" franchise) starred in the film "Pitch Black" directed by David Twohy. The sci-fi story is set in the future on a spaceship taking various people to different locations. Diesel's Riddick is a criminal being sent to a space prison, traveling with an Imam and his followers, a wealthy merchant, crew members, and more. The ship is hit by debris from a comet and crash lands on a desert planet where there is perpetual daylight. Well, that is until an eclipse brings out some very dangerous photosensitive creatures who really want to snack on humans (and have clearly done so before). Luckily Riddick has had his eyes surgically modified to see in the dark, allowing him to lead the team through the celestial event and attack. 

The film, which was the breakout project for Diesel, also starred Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, and Keith David.

Following on the heels of international hit “The Dry,” veteran Australian director Robert Connelly has tackled another local literary adaptation in “Blueback,” based on his celebrated compatriot Tim Winton’s 1997 novella. That slender tome (subtitled “A Contemporary Fable”) was aimed primarily at younger readers. The film adopts a somewhat more grownup, realistic, less parabolic tenor, though its ecology-minded narrative remains a bit sketchy for feature treatment — resulting in a pleasant, very handsome-looking movie rather short on dramatic impact.

Nonetheless, it’s got more than enough significant plusses to offer, from an appealing cast led by Mia Wasikowska and Radha Mitchell to much spectacularly inviting underwater photography. Having already played a few other fests in advance of its Sundance showcase (and opened commercially in a few territories), it is slated for U.S. theatrical release by Quiver Distribution on Feb. 24, with VOD following April 21.

"It's been so long since we've been together." IFC Films has revealed a trailer for an indie film titled Life Upside Down, formerly known as Worlds Apart, written and directed by filmmaker Cecilia Miniucchi. This is yet another lockdown project, finally releasing after first premiering at the Venice Film Festival's sidebar Venice Days a few months ago. Three couples who know one another are stuck at home during the beginning of lockdown. Jonathan, Clarissa and Paul will soon see their lives turned upside-down, forced to look at each other and ultimately at themselves. Forced to honestly face their spouses, friends, lovers, as well as take a good look in the mirror. The indie film stars Bob Odenkirk, Radha Mitchell, Danny Huston, Rosie Fellner, Cyrus Pahlavi, Terence Bernie Hines, and Jeanie Lim. This looks pretty rough, like many of the pandemic-inspired "what happened to us in lockdown" films the last few years.
