‘Creation Stories’ Film Review: A Muddled Look at Alan McGee’s Mythic Rise to Record Mogul-dom

‘Creation Stories’ Film Review: A Muddled Look at Alan McGee’s Mythic Rise to Record Mogul-dom
This review of “Creation Stories” was first published on June 16, 2021 after the film’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Drug-fueled benders and a knack for finding promising musical acts defined several decades of Scottish producer Alan McGee‘s storied, fast-paced life. The irreverent man behind Creation Records, the fiercely independent label that launched a slew of prominent bands into international stardom, holds a treasure-trove of anecdotes.

Those accounts — from the early, no-expectations days to the downfall from his no-holds-barred lifestyle — were first poured into McGee‘s 2013 autobiography and have now been adapted for the screen by Dean Cavanagh and Irvine Welsh (“Trainspotting”) for actor-turned-director Nick Moran’s film “Creation Stories.” Danny Boyle is an executive producer.

The somewhat-successful framing device here, at least for most of the parade of memories, is McGee’s interview with a young reporter in Los Angeles. Ewen Bremner, best known for playing Spud in “Trainspotting” and its sequel,

‘Creation Stories’ Review: An Over-Amped Flashback to Britpop’s ’90s Heyday

‘Creation Stories’ Review: An Over-Amped Flashback to Britpop’s ’90s Heyday
Some movies endure as a treasured soundtrack to which the film itself becomes a mere footnote. That seems likely to prove the case with “Creation Stories,” a biopic of Creation Records’ founder Alan McGee that duly draws sonic fuel from the stellar array of Britpop bands he was involved with. But as directed by Nick Moran in obvious imitation of executive producer Danny Boyle’s most hyperbolic style, scripted by Irvine Welsh and Dean Cavanagh, this apparently loose interpretation of the subject’s memoir becomes a hyperventilating “Behind the Music” caricature, all familiar flash and precious little substance. Rlj Entertainment is releasing on demand and digital platforms in the U.S. on Feb. 25, following openings in most other territories.

McGee’s 2013 same-titled tome is a breezy yet cogent chronicle of a whirlwind career, written in the clear-eyed retrospect of sobriety after years of chemical excess. But the film immediately lunges

Tribeca Review: Alan McGee Biopic Creation Stories Finds Ewen Bremner on a Cheerfully Anarchic Britpop Journey

Tribeca Review: Alan McGee Biopic Creation Stories Finds Ewen Bremner on a Cheerfully Anarchic Britpop Journey
Summer 2021 is the 25th anniversary of one of the biggest concerts in British music history: Oasis at Knebworth. The two-day event saw 250,000 mad-for-it fans of Liam and Noel Gallagher swarm the grounds of a country house in southern England for a murderer’s row of Britpop heavyweights. No performers stood taller that day than the headliners, the brash, Beatles-meets-Sex-Pistols from Manchester. For a brief period of time, Oasis was the biggest rock band in the world. None of this––literally none––would have happened had it not been for a sarcastic, caustic, hedonistic and drug-fueled Scotsman named Alan McGee. As his biopic Creation Stories opens he is introduced as a “music industry kingpin, guru, and former head of Creation Records.”

That is all true, though as a title card reads, “Most of this happened. Some of the names have been changed… to protect the guilty.” One’s interest in the

Nemesis review – geezer cliche compilation with a charisma bypass

Nemesis review – geezer cliche compilation with a charisma bypass
The Bill’s Billy Murray is a cockney hardman whose ordeal of a family dinner party gets inflicted on us too in this terrible thriller

If Towie put out a crime special it might look a bit like this shoddy London thriller about an ageing gangster whose plans for a peaceful retirement go south. The characters have that same style of stiff, awkward delivery, as if they’re speaking lines to each other over a dodgy Zoom link.

The star is TV mainstay Billy Murray (The Bill and EastEnders) who plays John Morgan, a gang boss with the telltale mahogany suntan of a cockney hardman done good. Morgan, semi-retired in Turkey, flies into London on a private jet for a charity fundraiser. But on the night there’s a spot of bovver with an old foe, alcoholic detective Frank Conway (Nick Moran). Morgan and his wife Sadie (Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott

HeyUGuys on set: Creation Stories, with Ewen Bremner and Alan McGee
The life of legendary band manager/Creation Records founder Alan McGee has been brought to the big screen by director Nick Moran and screenwriter Irvine Welsh, in Burning Wheel Productions’ Creation Stories.

Adapted from McGee’s autobiography, Creation Stories- Riots, Raves and Running and Record Label, the film charts McGee’s anarchic rise from small town promoter to industry mogul and the formation his record label Creation, which housed the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and Oasis.

The Creation Stories’ stellar cast includes Ewen Bremner (as McGee), Jason Isaacs, Suki Waterhouse, Rupert Everett, Stephen Berkoff and Jason Flemyng which, along with Moran’s direction, make it an energetic low glide over one of the last great music movements.

Back in the summer of 2018, HeyUGuys visited the Creation Stories production in Camden, London on a day when Moran and his crew were recreating past

Creation Stories review – mythmaking and megalomania in likable Alan McGee biopic

Creation Stories review – mythmaking and megalomania in likable Alan McGee biopic
Irvine Welsh’s cracking adaption of an autobiography by the ‘President of Pop’ flashes from My Bloody Valentine to his discovery of Oasis

“I’m talentless. But I make things happen.” That’s record label supremo Alan McGee speaking. It’s not remotely true: his taste is his talent. In the 80s and 90s, McGee put out records by the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and Teenage Fanclub. Now comes a biopic: a lairy, likable film directed by Lock Stock actor Nick Moran.

Creation Stories is co-written by McGee’s mate Irvine Welsh and Dean Cavanagh, who have adapted McGee’s 2013 autobiography. And it’s the cracking script that is the star here, giving McGee just enough working-class gobshite cheekiness (“I’m just a wee ginger tool from Glasgow”) to balance out the myth-making and megalomania. (This is a man who had a sign on his
