Paramount Pictures is going full steam with its Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise by attaching some of Hollywood’s hottest stars to voice iconic characters from the expanding Sega series. It broke the internet when Idris Elba said he was voicing Knuckles the Echidna for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I could hear the rapturous screams from my office in Canada as fans of the Blue Blur rejoiced. Now, Paramount is rekindling the fire by bringing Keanu Reeves into the fold as Shadow the Hedgehog for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Speaking about Reeves joining the cast, Idris Elba believes it was his destiny to work alongside the John Wick actor, and he couldn’t be happier about his good fortune.
“I’m a big fan of his,” Elba said about Keanu Reeves in an interview with IGN. “I’ve heard that he’s a fan of mine, and we are destined to make something together.

Plot: The new live-action event series follows Knuckles on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.
Review: It is hard to believe that Sonic The Hedgehog premiered on the big screen just before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the world. What is even harder to believe is that the movie was actually pretty good. Idris Elba is reacting to news that Keanu Reeves is joining the Sonic the Hedgehog universe as the voice of Shadow for the third installment of the film saga.
Elba voices Knuckles the Echidna and, during the red carpet premiere of the upcoming Paramount+ series Knuckles, shared his thoughts on Reeves.
“I’m a big fan of his,” Elba said in an interview with IGN. “I’ve heard that he’s a fan of mine, and we are destined to make something together. So, here we go.”
Elba and Reeves had shared credits voicing characters in Cyberpunk 2077 which would make Sonic the Hedgehog 3 a reunion for the actors.
Shadow made a non-speaking appearance during a mid-credits scene in 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The character is an anthropomorphic red-striped black hedgehog created by the government and set to resemble Sonic’s abilities.

Remember how the live-action version of Sonic the Hedgehog had a rough start? The fans were horrified by the leaked design of the character, as Paramount initially opted for a more original design, which was panned by fans, so they decided to listen to them and simply keep the original design, and this turned out to be the best decision they made. The first movie was a massive hit, and so was the sequel, so it was no surprise that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was quickly announced, and we can confirm that the movie is set for a December 20, 2024 theatrical release.
And while we’ve had several updates related to the movie, including Jim Carrey’s confirmed return as Dr. Robotnik, today is a big day as the main voice cast of the movie has finally been confirmed, all of that amidst flooding rumors that Keanu Reeves will be voicing Shadow,...

“Sonic the Hedgehog” just got a whole lot darker. Keanu Reeves has been cast as the voice of Shadow, the evil, lab-generated black hedgehog foil to Sonic, in Paramount’s upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” IndieWire has learned. Paramount had no comment.

James Marsden and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik are also returning to the cast of the live-action film. Jeff Fowler, who directed the first two entries, is returning for the three-quel.

Keanu Reeves (John Wick franchise) has been tapped to voice the role of Shadow in Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Deadline can confirm.
Paramount had no comment, but Reeves joins an ensemble led by Ben Schwartz, who plays Sonic. In all three films, James Mardsen plays Sonic’s human ally, Sheriff Tom Wachowski, with Jim Carrey as the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik.
First introduced in the video game Sonic Adventure 2 in 2001, Shadow is a creation of Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik. Possessing extraordinary speed, as well as Chaos Control, a power that allows him to manipulate space and time, he’s initially depicted as an antagonist to Sonic, though in the video games from Sega, he eventually becomes an ally.

We’ve known that Shadow the Hedgehog would be appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for some time but didn’t know who would be voicing the character… until now. First reported by John Campea and confirmed by THR, Shadow the Hedgehog will be voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves.
The audience at CinemaCon got a glimpse of Shadow during Paramount’s panel, during which a first-look trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was screened. The character first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 as a dark version of Sonic who does whatever it takes to achieve his goals. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has included some unexpected voice actors, such as Idris Elba as Knuckles, so it should be fun to see what Keanu Reeves does with Shadow.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Footage Reaction: Shadow The Hedgehog Makes His Grand Entrance [CinemaCon 2024]
The "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise is one of the best arguments in favor of the whole "IP is king" theory. The video games weren't exactly a pinnacle of narrative craftsmanship, relying more on the charm of the characters and the appeal of the gameplay to become as popular as they did. But the first and second movies, released in 2020 and 2022 respectively, were big hits for Paramount, suggesting the characters and brand recognition were enough to keep audiences engaged. Naturally, then, we'll be getting "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" this year, and we just got our first look at it.
Director Jeff Fowler, who helmed the first two films, is back for this third go-round, with Ben Schwartz likewise returning to voice the Big Blue himself. James Marsden is similarly reprising his role as the human Tom Wachowski alongside voice actors Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails and Idris Elba as Knuckles. Meanwhile, Jim Carrey...

After racing toward the finish line at top speed, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler is wrapping up production on the Blue Blur’s latest adventure! Fowler announced the film’s production wrap via Twitter/X with a new photo from the set. In the image, Fowler holds a giant clapper with drawings of the threequel’s primary animated cast, including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow. The latest addition to the cast, Shadow, takes the spotlight on the clapper, while Tails and Knuckles give the anti-hero the stink eye. Meanwhile, Sonic appears unbothered by Shadow’s presence, shrugging off the new player’s prominence. If you look past the clapper, you’ll find Fowler wearing a shirt saying “Keep Calm and Jim Carrey On,” a nod to the comedic actor’s franchise return as Dr. Robotnik.

I honestly never expected that a Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe would be a thing, but here we are. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 kicked off production last year, and James Marsden recently spoke with The Playlist and confirmed that filming has just wrapped.
“Yeah, we just wrapped, actually!” Marsden said. “I feel really proud of what we created, and the response from the fans, we just had to get the animation right on that first movie, but great family, all positive. Jim’s just having a ball, he’s in his inspiration zone… So it’s a joy to watch him have a good time, like really enjoying it again. It’s great, very lucky to be a part of it, and I think fans are gonna be excited about all the new characters.“

Sega and Paramount have made a Sonic The Hedgehog spin-off television series called Knuckles, here’s the trailer.
Sonic The Hedgehog is among the top selling video game franchises of all time. Launching on the Sega Mega Drive in 1991, the blue Hedgehog with super speed has graced countless video games, and after a failed attempt to make an animated film in the 1990s, he finally made a very successful leap to the big screen in 2020. Voiced by Ben Schwartz, it saw him go up against his arch nemesis Dr. Robotnik, played with maniacal relish by Jim Carrey. After being teased at the end of the first film, the 2022 sequel introduced Tails and Knuckles, voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Idris Elba.
News landed recently that the third film will see Carrey reprise his role, despite his previous assertion that he was retiring, with Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas,...

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is off and running (pun intended). You've seen these super-powered critters save the world a time or two, but what America and the world at large really want to know is ... what do they do on their day off? Apparently, for alien heroes with a taste for battle, that involves makeshift gladiatorial arenas and a never-ending quest for vengeance. That's courtesy of the popular breakout character from "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," which featured Idris Elba's dulcet tones as the voice of Knuckles. Now, ahead of this year's release of the third "Sonic" film, everybody's favorite red echidna is getting his own spin-off series titled, fittingly enough, "Knuckles."

Ahead of a Super Bowl spot that will air during the CBS and Nickelodeon broadcasts (Knuckles and friends will even make an appearance during the kids’ version) of the big game, Paramount+ has dropped the first trailer for “Knuckles” and announced all episodes of the series will be available to stream in the U.S. and Canada beginning April 26. It will hit additional territories the following day and Japan later this year.

Soon it will be Paramount+ & Knuckles, as the streamer released the first trailer for its spinoff series of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films on Thursday morning. “Knuckles” sees Idris Elba return to voice the eponymous grumpy echidna, introduced as Sonic’s foe-turned-friend in the second “Hedgehog” entry.
Billed as “the latest in the cinematic world of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog,'” the first look also comes with the news that the entire series — totaling six episodes — will debut simultaneously on Paramount+ in North America on April 26. Additional territories will follow on April 27, with a Japan release slated for later on this year.
Paramount Pictures and Sega of America plan to give fans an additional look at “Knuckles” during Super Bowl Lviii on Sunday, when a TV spot will debut during the game. The character of Knuckles is also set to make a “surprise appearance” during Nickelodeon’s specialized live broadcast of football’s biggest night.

If you smell chili dogs on the wind, it’s likely because Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is racing into production! Ramping up after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ended, Paramount Pictures teased a show start image on Twitter. The pic features a striking new logo for the sequel on a clapper. The logo appears to shorten the title to Sonic 3 instead of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Standing next to the clapper with clenched fists is a mysterious-looking character. At first, you might think it’s Sonic. Still, upon closer inspection, the intimidating figure is indeed Shadow the Hedgehog, who was teased in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 during an after-credits sequence.

Video game adaptations are all the rage. Together with anime, video games are the new gold rush for adaptations. Gone are the days when they were considered an instant failure; whether it's "Arcane," "Castlevania" or "The Last of Us," adaptations of video games are garnering critical acclaim and high viewership. On the film front, the "Sonic the Hedgehog" movies and the recent "Super Mario Bros. Movie" showed video game adaptations could also make money. Like, a lot of it.
Adapted from the iconic Sega video games of the same name, "Sonic the Hedgehog" focuses on the titular Sonic (Ben Schwartz) as he teams up with a small-town human sheriff (James Marsden) for a fun road trip that ends in a confrontation with the diabolical scientist Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). The second "Sonic" film expands the world by introducing other anthropomorphic animals with powers, specifically Miles "Tails" Prower (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and...

Fire Emblem fans have plenty of reasons to be excited about the recently-released Fire Emblem Engage. Not only is it the latest entry into the famous strategy franchise, but it’s really a return to form for Fire Emblem after the series experimented with a few different ideas. It also features a massive roster of characters voiced by some pretty notable actors.
Seriously, Engage’s voice cast is impressive. It’s one thing to boast a roster of named and notable characters quite so large, and it’s quite another to give most of those characters their own name and voice. While you may only recognize the names of a few Fire Emblem voice actors on paper, you’ll almost certainly recognize many of them the moment you hear them in-game.
So whether you can’t quite place why that name is so familiar, or you just want a little...

Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has crossed the 400M threshold at the global box office, including 190.6M from domestic and 209.5M internationally through Tuesday. It is currently the No. 8 film worldwide in 2022 and is likely to jump up a few notches as it still has Japan and Hong Kong to release. At Paramount’s CineEurope presentation today, a threequel was touted.
The little blue critter’s sequel initially got off to a fast-breaking early overseas start in late March and added markets over several months.
Its Top 5 offshore markets to date are the UK (34.3M), Mexico (22.1M), France (17.3M), Australia (16.6M) and Brazil (12M).
Domestically, Sonic 2 debuted in April with 71M, outstripping the three-day opening results of the 2020 original movie which had bowed over a holiday weekend.
The first film ultimately grossed 171M overseas and nearly 320M global, but also got its legs cut short as the Coronavirus crisis was just beginning.

Anytime a new Sonic the Hedgehog project gets announced, fans clamor to discuss what it should be influenced by. The classic Genesis games for their iconic look? The Dreamcast Sonic Adventure series for the story? Sonic’s various appearances in animation also get brought up, whether it is the wacky slapstick of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, the cult classic Sonic the Hedgehog (aka SatAM), the Sonic X anime, and more.

Echoes of Sonic the Hedgehog’s movie redesign will reverberate throughout the industry for decades to come. The visual shift of the film’s title character caused public opinion to take a massive 180-degree turn, transforming the movie’s buzz from negative to overwhelmingly positive. This shift has often been cited as the singular reason the movie turned out to be a hit.
While it can’t be denied that the redesign played a part in Sonic’s newfound movie popularity, a design can only go so far. If the movie had been total garbage, it wouldn’t have been able to retain the publics support. What really saved the Sonic movies was a key decision about how to portray Sonic as a character.

As the box office opens two films featuring high-octane speedsters this weekend, one has emerged a clear victor. Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” looks to top the charts this weekend with an impressive opening between 67 million to 69 million, while Universal’s R-rated actioner “Ambulance” will likely fail to clear double digits.
“Sonic” unleashed on the box office on Thursday to the tune of 6.3 million in previews and has only gained steam since, playing in 4,234 locations. The Sega sequel is outperforming its 2020 predecessor, which opened to 58 million at a time when Covid-19 was still a nebulous threat to most North Americans. That “Sonic 2” is opening even stronger isn’t only good news for Paramount’s hunt for sustainable IP, but it also shows that family audiences are largely ready to return to movie theaters for the right movie.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” is the perfect expansion/continuation of the first “Sonic the Hedgehog” film, which became a surprise hit in 2020 just as the pandemic was beginning.
This new film follows a similar formula to the original – silly all-ages humor that includes a dog wearing sunglasses and a joke about a bikini wax, some extreme Jim Carrey mugging, plentiful computer-generated imagery and a modest addition of new elements from the “Sonic the Hedgehog” mythology.
That’s right, this time adorable fox Tails (voiced by video game mainstay Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and the sinister Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) are joining Sonic (once again voiced by Ben Schwartz) for more over-the-top mayhem. If you’ve ever plopped yourself down in front of a Sega Genesis, the memories will come flooding back.

This review was first published on March 28.
For a film engendered to milk nostalgia for a recognizable piece of intellectual property, 2020’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” had more personality in its cast and sardonic bite in its writing than most comparable productions adapted from classic cartoons or vintage video games.
The sequel, completed in record time after the pre-pandemic box-office success of the first installment, brings back its core creative team: director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller (with additional collaborator John Whittington this time around) for a similarly enjoyable cash cow with some welcomed, if far from revolutionary, idiosyncrasy.
Quill-covered hero Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) has found a home in Green Hills, Montana, with his human adoptive parents Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). At night, however, he sneaks out to be a Batman-like vigilante without much success at helping people. Thematically, the crucible for...

“Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” Paramount’s family-friendly sequel based on the speedy blue video game character, brought in a strong 6.25 million from the box office in its preview screenings that began at 3 p.m. Thursday. The movie opens in 4,232 domestic locations this weekend.
That total is also inclusive of fan sneak preview screenings from Wednesday night in 700 theaters as “Sonic 2” looks like it will get off to a Sonic-fast start. By comparison, this is more than double the 3 million that the first “Sonic” earned from Thursday previews in February 2020. The studio is projecting “Sonic 2” an opening above 50 million this weekend, or between 51-54 million, against a 110 million budget, though tracking is imprecise given the lack of family films in theaters in the past four months.
Also opening in preview screenings this weekend is Universal’s “Ambulance,” the new thriller from Michael Bay that stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Colleen O’Shaughnessey’s biggest break in her nearly 30 years of voice acting has come with the release of Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” — playing Sonic’s closest pal, the two-tailed fox Max “Tails” Prower. It’s not a new role for O’Shaughnessey. For eight years, she’s voiced Tails in video games and animated TV shows, but it wasn’t until this past May that she got the confirmation that she would join the voice cast for the sequel to 2020’s theatrical hit “Sonic” alongside Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Idris Elba as Knuckles. O’Shaughnessey’s big-screen breakthrough comes at a time when voice actors, after decades of work in animation and gaming, signals a shift in Hollywood to recognize the often undersung talent who bring animated and video-game characters to life. “I told my agent that if I got this part, it’s a huge win for me,...

This weekend will keep the streak going and up the stakes as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 races into 4,232 theaters and is set to become one of the year’s top openers yet. Add to that next weekend’s release of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, which begins its international rollout this weekend, and it is clear we are in the midst of the strongest slate of films since last October.
The new Sonic comes just over two years after the original Sonic the Hedgehog opened to 58 million in February 2020. Its 149 million domestic and 320 million worldwide finishes were pretty solid for the 85 million budgeted franchise starter, especially when you consider that the breakout of the Covid-19 pandemic cut its run short.

Much like its predecessor, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 captures the feel of its video game inspiration fairly accurately. It’s a mindless and amusing piffle, designed to distract kids and then be quickly forgotten. As with the first film, it’s probably the best movie that can be made about a fast blue rodent collecting rings.
The sequel picks up not too long after the first film. Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) is living happily in the small town of Green Hills with his buddies Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter), although he secretly ventures out to nearby Portland to stop crime, inadvertently destroying a city block in the process. His idyllic life gets shaken up when the villainous Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey) escapes from the dreaded Mushroom Planet, bringing with him an angry red beastie named Knuckles (Idris Elba). But Sonic has his own new ally, a two-tailed...

For the most devoted fans of “Sonic the Hedgehog,” the new blockbuster film coming this weekend will have the bonus of seeing — or rather hearing — Colleen O’Shaughnessey make her big-screen debut as Miles “Tails” Prower after playing the flying fox for eight years.
“It’s just unbelievable and joyous and beautiful and amazing,” O’Shaughnessey told TheWrap. “All the excitement and love I’ve received from the fans has been so gratifying, with all these tweets telling me they were hoping that I would get to play Tails in this film. They’ve had my back and have been so supportive since the beginning.”
O’Shaughnessey joined the “Sonic” series in 2010 playing the hyperactive bee Charmy, but took over playing Tails in 2014 with the release of the spinoff video game and animated series “Sonic Boom.” Since then, she’s played the iconic Sega character in seven “Sonic” games, and in...

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the sequel to the last big blockbuster before the pandemic, opens this weekend, keeping a steady stream of dollars into the theatrical marketplace with an estimated opening of 50 million-plus, and possibly 60M.
The first movie in February 2020 broke the video game feature adaptation curse for the genre, opening to 58M over 3 days, 70M over four, and winning over die-hard fans of the Sega character. In landing a new franchise, Paramount wasn’t going to mess up the second time around and kept director Jeff Fowler on board as well screenwriters Pat Casey and John Miller, with the addition of John Whittington.
The increased stakes for the sequel come with the expansion of Sonic universe with characters Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba, and Tails, voiced by one of the video game’s iconic voiceover performers, Colleen O’Shaughnessey. That latter piece of casting goes a long way with Sonic devotees.

As a young child, Steven Spielberg’s Hook was one of my favorite movies. The kind where you’d wear out the VHS tape and your parents’ patience when such a thing was possible (today only parents’ nerves can fray). It wasn’t until I was older that I became aware that almost every grown-up loathed that picture in ‘91—including my parents. And Spielberg. Yet when I watch that movie still, I can’t really see the flaws. Nostalgia and John Williams’ sonic joys are too blinding.
The memory of this came back while watching Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Which is not to say that one should draw a direct line of comparison between Sonic director Jeff Fowler and Steven Spielberg, even at the latter’s most saccharine. If there was a ‘90s family movie equivalent to Sonic 2, it might be one of those Beethoven sequels given how many...

“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” — or “Sonic 2 The Hedgehog” as its title treatment suggests — is perhaps the most accurate video game adaptation ever put to film. Not because it captures the thrill of speeding through exotic locales, or even the curiosity of turning a corner and discovering an open world. Rather, it re-creates the feeling of walking up to a Non Player Character laying in wait, breathing heavily as they anticipate the beginning of a conversation made up of two or three pre-ordained lines. Its character designs accurately mirror those lifeless Npc stares, meant to give off the vague appearance of humanity.
This time around, there isn’t just Sonic the hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz) fulfilling that role, but his buddy Tails the fox (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and his adversary Knuckles the Echidna (voiced by Idris Elba), a trio of dead-eyed toys trudging from scene to scene without charm or personality.
