More than a decade after “Shrek” prequel/spinoff “Puss in Boots,” the flamboyant feline is up to his old tricks — but has yet to meet the computer-animated ogre whose party he’s destined to crash in “Shrek 2.” As that series wore on, the “Shrek” franchise took on so many popular side characters that by the fourth outing, there was hardly room left to swing a cat.
A knee-high hero who walks, talks and swashbuckles upright, Puss was one of the few tagalongs rich enough to warrant his own origin story. Now, director Joel Crawford (“The Croods: A New Age”) goes dark, bringing the fearless cat face to face with his own mortality. By forcing Puss to contemplate his priorities, the sequel more than justifies its own existence, while paving the way for how his path meets the big green guy’s.
The stakes may be more serious this time around,...

Gru and the minions are back in an all new blast from the past adventure. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” takes viewers back to Gru’s childhood where, on the brink of adolescence, Gru wants nothing more than to join The Sinister Six, a group of villains notorious for their collaboration in crime.

Los Angeles composer Peter Boyer will have his biggest national showcase to date when PBS’s “Great Performances” debuts his “Ellis Island: The Dream of America” on Friday, June 29.
Carl St. Clair conducts the Pacific Symphony in the hour-long broadcast, taped last year as part of the orchestra’s annual American Composers Festival. Actors Barry Bostwick, Camryn Manheim and Michael Nouri are among those speaking the words of immigrants who came through Ellis Island during the early years of the 20th century. Hundreds of historical photos provide a visual backdrop for both actors and orchestra.

Boyer received a 2005 Grammy nomination for “best classical contemporary composition” for the work, which draws on the true stories of seven immigrants and frames their words with dramatic orchestral music that is very much in an Americana vein. The piece concludes with a...

In the cornball kiddie tradition of his “Scooby-Doo,” “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” and “Smurfs” films, director Raja Gosnell’s “Show Dogs” combines live-action actors with real and CGI talking creatures in service of groan-worthy comedic adventure. The hero in question here is Max, an NYPD police pooch (voiced by Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) who’s forced to partner with Will Arnett’s FBI agent while going undercover as a pageant contestant. Think of it as “Miss Congeniality” for dogs, replete with the sort of slapstick humor, puerile gags and for-adults-only pop-culture references required of such endeavors. Its frantic pace should make it a mildly amusing diversion for the younger set, but its juvenile imagination (or lack thereof) is likely to drive anyone over the age of 7 barking mad.

Illumination, who brought moviegoers Despicable Me and the biggest animated hits of 2013 and 2015, Despicable Me 2 and Minions, continues the story of Gru, Lucy, their adorable daughters—Margo, Edith and Agnes—and the Minions in Despicable Me 3. After he is fired from the Anti-Villain League for failing to take down the latest bad guy to threaten humanity, Gru finds himself in the midst of a major identity crisis. But when a mysterious stranger shows up to inform Gru that he has a long-lost twin brother—a brother who desperately wishes to follow in his twin’s despicable footsteps—one former super-villain will rediscover just how good it feels to be bad.

In case you didn’t notice last week, a number of categories had their ranks thinned out by the Academy. Well, in that regard, I’m here to help. Yes, AMPAS thinned the herd in Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Foreign Language Feature. They also managed to include a handful of snubs, as always is the case. Those will be listed in just a moment, but definitely study these lists, as there are Oscar hints to be found within. For now though, these are just the remaining titles fighting it out for nominations. Take a look and be sure to see how it all impacts predictions going forward. Below you will see the 145 films in Original Score that are still eligible, the 91 tunes in Original Song, and the nine in Foreign Language Feature that remain in play. There were no real Song snubs, but notably Score has eliminated presumed nominee Arrival,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

Now in its ninth year, Krakow’s Film and Music Festival (Fmf) brought together film composers and music professionals for a series of masterclasses and concerts in the heart of the city’s historic old town. This year’s festival ran from May 24-30, with an additional concert concluding its musical showcase on May 31.
The festival kicked off with a special distinction award for Roman Polanski, who was honoured by the Polish Filmmakers Association (Spf) for his contribution to Polish cinema. When I reviewed Minions here ate We Are Movie Geeks back in July, I wrote: “Those goggle-eyed scene-stealers from Despicable Me (and its sequel) get their own showcase in Minions, a colorful, fast-paced prequel that kids will have fun with ……There’s a lot of fun to be had with the period music and references to Nixon, the moon landing, and the Swinging London of that time period. I’m not sure small children will laugh when the Minions pop out of a sewer lid on Abbey Road just as the Beatles are making their famous crossing, but I did. Voiced by the film’s directors Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda jabbering in a helium-fueled garble, the Minions are pure slapstick gold….” (read all of my review Here)

How does a composer create musical voices for a population of yellow creatures who speak their own language? If you’re Grammy Award-winning musician/composer/songwriter Heitor Pereira, it’s one groovy journey.
Playing in theaters now, Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.
But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he – alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob – ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.
The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain.

Small, jeans-wearing yellow and unintelligible creatures made big noise at the box office this weekend as Minions scored the second-highest opening ever for an animated film in North America. Minions, directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, earned $115.2 million, second only to Shrek the Third’s $122.5 million worldwide, with the global tally $395.7 million for the Illumination Entertainment and Universal film. Part of the movie’s appeal is the bright, whimsical score by Heitor Pereira, who also composed the music for the prequel’s predecessors, 2010’s Despicable Me and 2013’s Despicable Me 2. Grammy-winning Musician/Songwriter/Composer Heitor Pereira returns with a mischievous score for Illumination’s newest installment of the Despicable Me franchise, Minions, in theatres nationwide on July 10, 2015.
Pereira has been the musical voice of the minions since the beginning, earning critical acclaim and accolades including two Annie Award nominations (Despicable Me 1 & 2) and two Ascap Film & TV Music Awards. There's something about Mick Hucknall. The Simply Red frontman may not look like your stereotypical ladies' man, but he's had more than his share of dalliances over the past three decades or so. He even admitted as much in a new interview with the U.K.'s Telegraph. Asked whether it's true that he's had sex with over a thousand women, the now-54-year-old Hucknall said that was likely a fair estimate, though he never really kept count. The sets. The hair and makeup. The cinematography. The story. The sound. All of the work of talented crafts people are pulled together under the very heart of any good movie – the score.
With the Academy Award nominations on Thursday, January 16, looming like the drumline at the head of a marching band, we thought we’d have a look back at some of the finer scores of 2013.
Listen and watch a handful of Hollywood’s leading composers discuss the art of scoring a film in The Hollywood Reporter’s round table discussion. With one hundred fourteen scores from 2013 vying for nominations in the Original Score category for the 86th Oscars, we suspect some of these names will be announced .

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

Vinyl’s back, tell a friend. After having been ousted by more compact forms of music containment, those shiny Pvc songholders are back with a polite and largely inoffensive vengeance. New vinyl sales currently stand at around 600,000 units for 2013. Ok, I admit it, 600,000 units is hardly going to strike fear into the cold, grey hearts of iTunes et al. But there’s definitely a wave of support which shows no sign of breaking any time soon.
Why’s that then? Contrary to popular belief, it has less to do with Shoreditch Hipsters and more to do with the people realising just how much they love music. And a bit to do with good old consumerism.
The record’s original enforced semi-retirement was due to its size. The smaller, far more practical, cassette bowled up and basically picked on it for carrying a bit too much timber. It was like getting changed for P.

Los Angeles — Stealing the moon can be a tough act to follow, as reformed criminal mastermind Gru and the creative team behind the $540-million-grossing 2010 smash "Despicable Me" discovered when it was time to dream up an encore.
After all, it was no mean feat to successfully juggle all that lunar lunacy with a delightful companion plot involving a trio of orphaned girls who, in turn, steal Gru's heart. While the new edition doesn't quite catch that inspired spark, there's still plenty to enjoy here courtesy of those zippy visuals and a pitch-perfect voice cast led by the innately animated Steve Carell.
Expect the movie's minions to once again turn up in droves in what is certain to be a stellar Fourth of July holiday weekend.

It might seem crazy what I’m about to say, but Pharrell Williams‘ song Happy definitely sounds great! The song features on the soundtrack of the upcoming Despicable Me 2, and as you’re about to hear (and see) – our cute little yellow friends have never been happier! Head inside to find the video & clap along if you know what happiness is to you… Williams and Heitor Pereira composed the original music for the film which revolves around Gru and his friends (read: minions, Lucy, Dr. Nefario and his adopted daughters) who must save the world from a brand new villain called Eduardo aka El...
