To celebrate the extraordinary success of horror film The Wretched, which opened in May in the Us, we sat down with its writer/director team of Drew and Brett Pierce to chat about its amazing success story.
As we know, cinemas have been in lockdown across the world for months now and much of the slated cinema releases – from Bond 25 to Black Widow, Promising Young Woman to Tenet – have been shelved and moved to later in the year. A strange time for cinemagoers but in the Us, social distancing and lockdown protocols have seen a surge in an old film favourite – the drive-in cinema and The Wretched has seen audiences flock to see it.
Now seven weeks after release, the film has grossed over $1million from drive-in receipts and strangely now shares as record with Marvel’s Black Panther in that is was No.1 at the box office for six consecutive weekends.

IFC’s horror movie “The Wretched” passed the $1 million mark after a month of drive-in movie theater buzz.
The indie film took in $162,000 at 95 sites over the weekend. After premiering at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival, it launched on May 1 at just 11 drive-ins, including the Mission Tiki in Montclair, Calif., where it had an informal premiere.
Written and directed by Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, “The Wretched” follows a young boy who discovers an evil witch in the nearby woods. The cast includes John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda, Zarah Mahler, Azie Tesfai and Jamison Jones.
“Anyone who at this point disputes or discounts the power of the big screen experience need only look at the stellar ongoing drive-in performance of IFC’s ‘The Wretched,'” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
Meanwhile, Quiver’s thriller “Becky” was at the top of the small but growing U.S. box office with $178,186 at 42 locations.

Headed to select drive-in theaters and on various digital platforms this weekend is The Wretched from the Pierce Brothers, Brett and Drew. A clever and thrilling take on various witch-centric folklore, The Wretched boasts some gnarly and awesome practical effects from beginning to end. To bring the film’s villain to life, as well as provide some other great effects moments to boot, Drew and Brett Pierce brought on Makeup Effects Supervisor Erik Porn, who worked tirelessly with his team to tackle the ambitious workload for The Wretched.
Years ago, this writer actually had the opportunity to work with Erik at Almost Human, and was able to see his talented efforts up close, which is why I didn’t hesitate for a moment to celebrate the brilliant effects that he created for The Wretched, as his nearly two decades in the industry working on a variety of projects have definitely served him well.

Arriving at select drive-ins (which is awesome) and on Digital and VOD tomorrow is The Wretched from directing duo Brett and Drew Pierce. Centered around a troubled teen who discovers that a deadly witch has cast a sinister spell on those around him, The Wretched is a pretty rad throwback horror that wears its influences on its sleeve, but ultimately stands out as something wholly its own, which is no easy feat.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with the Pierce Brothers about their second directorial collaboration (they previously helmed Deadheads together), and they discussed their approach to the story of The Wretched, the various films that influenced the project, the challenges they faced in making The Wretched, as well as the collaborative process behind the design of the witch for the film.

The Pierce Brothers made a massive FrightFest impact in 2011 with Deadheads, their anarchic zombie adventure. Now the dynamic duo dive into creepy Blair Witch Land with a clever chiller about an ancient evil wood spirit who makes those inviting her into their house forget … everything. Student Ben has just started work at his father’s marina when he realizes something is just not quite right with his next-door neighbours. They don’t seem to remember they have a small son! Exploring their basement, Ben’s worst fears and more are proven to be true. But will anyone believe him?...

Whether behind the camera or in front, this year’s Fantasia Film Festival boasts many female stories. Horror has evolved over the years, not only creating a genre that’s nonlinear, but has allowed women in its narratives to become something other than the final girl. No one film in our list of most anticipated female-centered films is like the other, and no female character is similar to the next. Here’s just a taste of what can be expected throughout the festival’s 22-day run:
Knives and Skin, USA dir. Jennifer Reeder
Described as pertaining elements reminiscent of David Lynch, high school dramedies, and Italian giallo, Knives and Skin takes place in the aftermath of a girl’s vanishing. The film explores the days that follow as Carolyn Harper’s friends and family attempt to cope with her disappearance, and these coping mechanisms develop into something unusual. It's a...

**With Deadheads due out on DVD in the UK on Monday I think it’s a perfect time to repost my review of the film from this year’s Frightfest, and at the same time urge everyone to go out and buy what I consider to be one of the best films of 2011**

Deadheads
Directed by Brett Pierce, Drew T. Pierce
USA, 2011
The Pierce brothers have a strange brew in Deadheads. Zombie-comedy is an established genre at this point. The strangeness comes from the combining of bits of buddy comedy, teen movie, and road trip stuff they mix in; parts of Deadheads even feel like a Blink-182 music video, circa Enema of the State. For lurching corpses, zombies are pretty versatile.
This all works because Deadheads has a great premise. Mike (Michael McKiddy) wakes up in the middle of an undead outbreak and discovers two things. One, he’s a zombie. Two, he’s just not as much of a zombie as the other zombies. While they’re lurching, groaning, and gorging on flesh, he’s running, talking, and sick to his stomach. Enter Brent (Ross Kidder), a similarly dead but still talking goofball. The two aren’t quite zombies, but they aren’t human any more either.

The popularity of AMC's The Walking Dead series testifies to the longevity of this horror subgenre, with the success of Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland prompting more "zombedies." Both of these movies focus on the survival of unaffected individuals during a zombie apocalypse, but DeadHeads takes another road with the story of two zombies just trying to survive and fulfill unrequited love. Written, produced and directed by brothers Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, DeadHeads pays homage to many of the classic zombie/undead films, especially Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead, for which their father Bart Pierce handled the photographic special effects.
DeadHeads centers around Mike Kellerman (Michael McKiddy), who awakens to find himself in a strange place. After escaping, he encounters and runs in fear from flesh-eating zombies. What Mike doesn't quite get is that he is also one of the "undead," as he is able to speak and think regularly.

If the list of awardees below is long, it’s because the Newport Beach Film Festival screens over 400 films from more than 45 countries. With 50,000 visitors to the festival each year, part of the success of the program is its ability to draw full houses of appreciative audiences.
Opening with Michael C. In between the go and the whoa were panels on directing, music composition and a master class on screenwriting given by Aaron Sorkin. Oh, and those 400 films. For a highlights list of the films at...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The Strange Case Of Angelica (O Estranho Caso de Angélica) Trailer There's really nothing bad you could say about the opening of this trailer. It...

The first casualty Fango witnesses upon arriving at the wooded location in Howell, Michigan is the nearly decapitated body sprawled atop the makeup table, and an actor getting zombified by makeup artist Patrick Halpin of Dead Pretzel FX. Here and there, other ghouls roam amidst the crew. They are setting up for a fight scene in which a zombie hunter battles an infected cop.
A few minutes later, we meet up with Brett Pierce, one-half of the brother writer/director team (pictured above; see more exclusive pics below) who are in the last week of lensing their “zombedy” Deadheads, who explains the genesis of their film. “We made a really low-budget zombie movie with some other filmmakers seven years ago called Dead/Undead,” he tells Fango. “It was sort of cheesy, with a monster and kids in a cabin, and my brother Drew said, ‘Let’s make a zombie buddy movie.
