There’s an ongoing debate about whether or not so-called “cult classics” can exist in the streaming era. In a world where nearly every film ever made is available to watch at the click of a button, and where niche online communities can unite fans of even the most obscure international releases, how can we say that an easily accessible modern feature is part of the same underground movement as something like The Rocky Horror Picture Show when it’s just as easily viewed as the latest Avengers flick?
However, what many critics fail to realize is that this overwhelming availability of niche films is also responsible for burying potential hits underneath an ever-growing sea of similar releases. That’s why, at least to me, a modern cult classic isn’t necessarily a movie that cultivates a passionate fan-base through alternative means of distribution, but rather an easily accessible gem...

In Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, United States Air Force Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper goes rogue and launches an unprovoked nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. He is asked by Raf Group Captain Lionel Mandrake — a voice of reason in the madness — to recall the B-52 bombers that will end civilization. Ripper refuses. Mandrake asks politely, in an arch British way, why he feels the need to blow up the world. The general talks of how forces beyond our comprehension are slowly poisoning America with a toxic chemical known as … fluoride.

In a world… in which movies are just as much products as they are art, studios need to sell the latest releases to the broadest possible audiences. That means that they not only need to craft trailers promoting the films, but they need to misrepresent what films are really about.
On a certain level, that tendency toward misrepresentation makes sense. Trailers only have a couple of minutes to get people interested in the film, and complex works of art don’t lend themselves to such simplicities.
That said, it’s hard to see a masterpiece reduced to just a few sizzle moments, trying their best to ensure that the audience won’t be surprised or challenged by what they’re about to see. Here are some of the worst offenders in cinema history, movies that ended up to be so much more than what these teasers promised.

David Cronenberg's 1986 film "The Fly," based on the 1957 short story by George Langelaan, follows an engineer named Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) who has invented a way to teleport matter. At the beginning of the film, he only knows how to teleport small, inorganic objects, and still endeavors to build a machine that can teleport human beings. He will eventually be successful, although he encounters an unexpected wrinkle. When testing the teleportation pod on himself, a rogue housefly gets in with him, confusing the machine. He arrives in a second teleportation pod with the fly DNA spliced into his own.
The bulk of the film sees Seth slowly mutating and deteriorating into an encrusted fly man. For a long time, Seth wonders why his skin is scabbing over, why his teeth are falling out, and why he vomits acid on his food before eating it. The transformation is disgusting and tragic,...

Armando Iannucci and Steve Coogan will collaborate once again for a stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. The play is set to premiere at London’s Noel Coward Theatre on October 8th, 2024.
Marking the first-ever adaptation of a Kubrick film, Iannucci is teaming with Sean Foley, who will co-direct the production. Like Peter Sellers did in the 1964 movie, Coogan will portray multiple roles in the play. Known in full as Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Kubrick’s Cold War satire follows an Air Force general who orders a preemptive nuclear attack on the Soviet Union.
Sellers played three roles in the film: Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, fictional President Merkin Muffley, and Dr. Strangelove, the former Nazi who serves as Muffley’s scientific advisor. Both Sellers and Kubrick were nominated for Academy Awards for the landmark black comedy.

Lovecraft may have argued that the strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown, but there’s no denying the intellectual thrills of unraveling a good old-fashioned mystery. After all, some answers can serve to make a story even scarier, and I have a personal soft spot for horror yarns about grizzled investigators attempting to piece together a morbid puzzle.
This is precisely why I’ve been a fan of the Saw franchise from the very beginning, with the detective angle behind all the blood and guts making this gruesome franchise stand out amongst other so-called “torture-porn” movies.
And with the long-anticipated Saw X on the horizon this week, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the best investigative horror films ahead of Jigsaw’s latest killing spree. After all, sometimes it’s fun to figure out exactly why our protagonists are going...

Steve Coogan is going full Peter Sellers. The Alan Partridge and Philomena star has signed on for a British stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s seminal nuclear war satire Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, with Coogan set to play multiple roles, as Sellers did in the 1964 feature film.
Veep and Death of Stalin director Armando Iannucci is adapting Kubrick’s film for the stage together with Sean Foley. Foley, who has had West End success with such adaptations as The Painkiller starring Kenneth Branagh and Ben Elton’s The Upstart Crow, will also direct the play, which is set to premiere at London’s Noel Coward Theatre on Oct. 8, 2024.
The official Stanley Kubrick account on X, formerly known as Twitter, made the Coogan casting announcement on Tuesday.

Humanity is going to hell in a handbasket. At least, that seems to be the rearview consensus on 2022: a year that saw some things get better, a lot of things get worse, and the consequential uncertainty further taking over politics and pop culture.
Anyone reading this list knows horror movies mean some kind of catharsis. But as worldwide trends get more dreadful year over year, the thematic link between “our trying times” and the satisfaction we get from nightmares playing out onscreen has become stronger and more apparent. Now, perhaps more than ever before, scary movie fans can acutely consider why some new terrors captivate and excite, while others don’t or can’t.
Take last year’s inexplicable cannibalism trend: “Bones and All,” “Fresh,” “Resurrection,” all great movies that make our list. But why did consuming flesh consume our interest? And why did that subject matter so often intersect with sex?...

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities — a marvelous compendium of streaming deadtime stories — emphasizes everything that lures me to horror anthologies. It feels like a reinvention of Showtime’s Masters of Horror, highlighting everything I appreciate about the format. One might balk at calling Cabinet of Curiosities an outright horror anthology, more a miniseries? Still, the decadently morbid and dazzlingly darkened atmosphere under del Toro’s oversight draws rich atmospheric throughlines. Del Toro’s program calls to mind grim grab bags like A Christmas Horror Story, the V/H/S series, Southbound, and all the subgenre classics fans already laud.
If you think horror anthologies are just scattered collections of short-form storytelling and that’s all, consider yourself open to reeducation. Horror anthologies are often maligned because — like other subgenres such as found footage — horror anthologies can become fallback “easy to make” titles. Individual scripts only need to stretch minutes versus hours,...

At this point, saying that 2022 has been a good year for TV would be like saying water is wet. There's more TV than ever before, which means that if you thought it was anything but a great year for the medium, you simply haven't been watching enough of the good stuff. We're not blaming you, as the total saturation of the format also means it's tougher than ever to decide what to watch. Luckily, we've got you covered with a countdown of the year's best episodes, a list that includes comedies, dramas, fantasies, horror shows, and everything in between.
While some of the year's best shows -- like "Abbott Elementary," "Hacks," or "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" -- aren't represented here, it's simply because their episodes were too uniformly great to choose just one. But the shows that did make the cut each find a way to transport, inspire awe,...

Joy Sunday makes a huge impact in Netflix's new series "Wednesday." She stars as Bianca Barclay, the most popular girl at Nevermore Academy who butts heads with the titular Addams Family hero, played by Jenna Ortega. But things for Bianca are a lot more complicated than they seem on the surface.
Working on the show was a dream come true for Sunday, and a big part of that was getting to work with Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams. "Catherine was basically the first time I ever looked at someone and said, 'I want her job,'" Sunday tells Popsugar. "It was rewinding to me as a 10-year-old,...

Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities" hasn't been renewed just yet, but the cabinet's curator already has some great ideas about who could show up to direct episodes of the second season. Series creator, writer, and host del Toro spoke with IndieWire about the Netflix horror anthology that gave eight filmmakers the spotlight in its first season, and revealed some of the directors he hopes to invite for the series' second outing.
Among the filmmaker's dream collaborators? "La Llorona" writer-director Jayro Bustamante; "Tigers are Not Afraid" filmmaker and writer Issa López; actor, producer, and "Depraved" writer-director Larry Fessenden; and Boots Riley, who wrote and directed the dark satirical comedy "Sorry to Bother You." Some members of this impressive group are apparently closer to a done deal than a wishlist, as Del Toro also revealed that two of the four already had episodes in the works before other projects came up.

Whether it's literal monsters or the decay of humanity, "Cabinet of Curiosities" savors the disturbing. It's not only that the series fuels our nightmares with alien invasions and lotion monsters. There are also razor-sharp discussions about our obsession with beauty, greed, and grief that curdle and chill the blood. The Zoe Saldaña-led limited series “From Scratch” was Netflix’s top title between Oct. 24 and Oct. 30, bringing in 72 million hours viewed.
This viewing period marks the romance’s first full week of availability on Netflix; last week, it debuted at No. 3 with 32.2 million hours viewed after three days on the streamer. “From Scratch” is based on the memoir of the same name by Tembi Locke, who co-created the series with her sister, showrunner Attica Locke.
“From Scratch” is the first project to outrank Ryan Murphy’s recent output at Netflix. Between Jeffrey Dahmer drama “Monster” and his limited series “The Watcher,” Murphy spent five weeks at the top of the chart. During the Oct. 24-30 window, “The Watcher” dropped to second place on the English-language TV chart with 67.5 million hours viewed — still an impressive showing for its second full week on Netflix. “Monster,” in its fifth full week, took fifth place with 41 million hours.

Guillermo del Toro's "Cabinet of Curiosities" is a collection of many wonders. The new spooky anthology presented by the famed filmmaker has a little bit of everything, from eldritch terrors to giant rats to malevolent moisturizers. It also has a clear standout story in David Prior's "The Autopsy," which is by far the most viscerally scary entry in the show's eight-episode first season.
If you haven't yet caught up on "Cabinet of Curiosities," which is wrapping up its four-night run on Netflix, be warned that we're about to get into the gory details of "The Autopsy" here. Episodic anthologies in the entertainment age of “content” are a tricky proposition. Crafting unique and compelling narratives is a challenge unto itself, made all the more difficult when creators have to start from scratch every episode… a notion that bucks against modern audiences’ inclination toward serialized stories. If viewers aren’t watching a movie, they want their favorite characters to keep them company for days and days (if not weeks and months). Merely making each episode longer isn’t the answer either, as hourlong anthologies have proven especially hit-or-miss. Where 30-minute entries (like many in “Room 104” and “Roar”) can be quick and cutting, a doubled runtime can result in bloat, banality, or both.
Sure, there are exceptions to the rule. “Black Mirror” became a streaming sensation (albeit after being developed outside of L.A.’s studio system), and “The Twilight Zone” remains the format’s gold standard (released back...

In addition to being a beloved and Oscar-winning director, Guillermo del Toro is also a relentless champion of other filmmakers, from his recent impassioned Twitter defense of Martin Scorsese against a dismissive essay to his years-ago commentary track for his monster movie “Mimic” where he offers an unsolicited and enthusiastic recommendation of the film’s two direct-to-video sequels. So while plenty of other figures might be adept at filling an Alfred Hitchcock-style role as a impresario of ghoulish tales, it feels particularly fitting to see del Toro lend both his name and personality to “Cabinet of Curiosities,” a Netflix anthology series where eight different filmmakers are given around an hour to tell a creepy and/or chilling and/or goopy horror story — primarily set in the past, though presumably that wasn’t a requirement.
This eclectic group of horror and horror-adjacent directors includes material that should be hotly anticipated by genre fans.

Plot: Acclaimed Academy Award-winning filmmaker and creator, executive producer and co-showrunner Guillermo del Toro has curated a collection of unprecedented and genre-defining stories meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror. From macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy, these eight equally sophisticated and sinister tales (including two original stories by del Toro) are brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by del Toro.
Review: Guillermo Del Toro is as well known for making brilliant forays into genre as he is for the numerous projects he has never been able to see through to completion. For every The Shape of Water or Crimson Peak, there are dozens of other ideas that Del Toro has come up with but has been unable to finish or even reach production. Guillermo del Toro joins the ranks of episodic genre anthology curators like Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling with his “Cabinet of Curiosities.” Del Toro assembles a Murderers’ Row of horror filmmakers for his limited anthology series, each story contained within his ornate oddities cabinet. That singular, eponymous item doesn’t just anchor the anthology but serves as a visual representation of the type of vintage scary story collection that “Cabinet of Curiosities” unfurls.
Del Toro introduces each selected tale like a sophisticated carnival barker. A short monologue ensues as the genre maestro opens his cabinet and plucks out a representative item for each curated story along with a carved figurine of its director. Series creator and executive producer del Toro hand selected each story and director, uniting their distinct visions through a recurring theme of hidden, shifting realities. The episodes range from the macabre to classic frights to the fantastical,...

Guillermo del Toro knows a thing or two about ghosts, ghouls, and monsters, so the idea of the Academy Award-winning filmmaker shepherding a horror anthology series feels too good to be true and is too good to pass up. While del Toro himself doesn't helm any of the short films that are part of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," he does have a hand in writing some. And more than that, he serves as our host, stalking out of the shadows like Rod Serling on "Night Gallery." The filmmaker is no actor, and his introductions are quite stiff — but that's part of the charm. There's something sweet about this lovable artist doing his best to read ominous introductions while decked out in his best black suit, looking like an undertaker having a great time at a wake.

For horror fans, Halloween isn’t just a holiday – it’s a state of mind. While most studios, networks and streaming platforms are fine with dropping most of their new horror content in the month of October, that’s just not enough to satisfy our jones for new tales of terror. I recently listed some of the new and upcoming horror movies to keep watch for – both this month and the weeks and months to follow – and it’s about time we did the same for TV series as well.
October brought us some excellent new and returning horror shows to networks and streamers, from a new season of Chucky to some chilling premieres like Interview with the Vampire, and there are still plenty more rolling out in the coming weeks. But right now, I’m going to focus on six new horror series that are coming your way soon...

David Prior's 2020 film "The Empty Man" opens with a prologue that could easily stand alone as one of the most chilling short films ever made. It's 1995, and two couples -- Paul (Aaron Poole) and Ruthie (Virginia Kull), Fiona (Jessica Matten) and Greg (Evan Jonigkeit) -- are hiking through the Ura Valley in Bhutan. After crossing an old, swaying suspension bridge across a yawning chasm, Paul hears a soft sound like someone blowing into an empty bottle. Curious, he wanders off across the mountaintop in search of the source of this sound. As the others watch, he slips through an unseen hole in the rocks and disappears, as though he was never there at all.
It's another twenty minutes before the title card of the movie appears, stylized as "The Em ty Man." By this point, all of the hikers are dead except for Paul, who is trapped in a different kind of hell.

When one thinks of Stanley Kubrick's 1964 Cold War satire "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb," the most iconic image that comes to mind is that of a hollering Slim Pickens straddling a descending hydrogen bomb. The journey to that image was a royal pain for the celebrated filmmaker.
"Strangelove" co-writer Terry Southern penned a memoir piece titled "Strangelove Outtake; Notes from the War Room," originally published in Grand Street magazine in 1994. He describes the pressure that Kubrick was under to employ Peter Sellers in multiple roles, which the Columbia suits had determined was the sole reason for the success of "Lolita" (it wasn't). So Kubrick agreed to cast Sellers in "at least four major roles," three of which made the final cut: Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, President Merkin Muffley, and the titular Doctor Strangelove.

Like most hardcore horror fans, Guillermo del Toro loves a good anthology series. From "The Twilight Zone" to "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," which del Toro produced, the notion of getting a completely different tale of terror each week is too tantalizing to resist. So genre fans should be giddily anticipating the October 25, 2022, Netflix premiere of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," which boasts eight episodes of spine-tingling fright from some of the most talented horror directors working today.
In the newly released teaser, del Toro promises, "Each of the episodes has a whole world." Though he is presenting the series, he has given all eight directors free rein to tell their stories on their own creative terms. Perhaps the most exciting element of the series is its focus on the construction of "beautiful, practical creatures." In an industry where CG dominates, it's an absolute joy to hear...

Spooky season is right around the corner, and the folks at Netflix have an incredible treat in store. "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities" will debut on the streamer over the course of four nights leading up to Halloween weekend, delivering chills and thrills curated by one of the modern masters of horror.
