American skateboarder Danny Way has an impressive five gold medals to his name at the Summer X Games, which even more impressively were won across over a decade. And having made his mark on the industry (and then some), his life was turned into the documentary, Waiting for Lightning, by Jacob Rosenberg.
We saw some great early clips this time last year, soon after the film had premiered out in SXSW. And with the film now on the cusp of its global release later this month, following its Us release back in December, we’ve got a new trailer to share from the documentary.
An inspiring documentary that follows skateboarding pioneer Danny Way, revealing the passion, grit, determination and psyche behind one of the sport’s greatest legends. Danny Way was a young boy from a broken home whose passion for skateboarding would bring him across boundaries to attempt the...

There have been plenty of quality biographical extreme sports docs released in the last couple years, with Jeff Tremaine’s profile of BMX godfather Matt Hoffman, The Birth of Big Air, Stacy Peralta’s loving skate team autobio, Bones Brigade, and even Tristan Patterson’s beautifully unconventional debut, Dragonslayer, but the more the merrier as far as we’re concerned. Jacob Rosenberg’s directorial debut, Waiting For Lightning, stylishly outlines the life of boundary pushing skateboard legend Danny Way by combining elements of retrospective bits with the capping of a career in Way’s attempt to jump the Great Wall of China. The cross cut story is not a complete success, but Way, like many of the skate icons who vet his story, is an enigmatic character of practiced skill and devout will, making for a compelling film filled with fledgling career footage and plenty of big air delirium.

“When Danny asked me to make the film, I knew right away I had the opportunity to pay tribute to a skateboarder I admired and tell a human story that fed my filmmaking soul. When Danny calls and asks, you don’t say no.” – Jacob Rosenberg, director of Waiting for Lightning There is no real way of knowing, just by watching it, that the new documentary Waiting for Lightning is a work commissioned by its own subject. The above quote comes from an interview in the press notes, and after reading it, I decided that the film is even worse than I already thought. Something just rubs me the wrong way about a prominent person having a movie made about himself. It reminds me of Triumph of the Will, especially the opening. This isn’t to say that I think legendary pro skateboarder Danny Way is comparable to Hitler in the worst of aspects, just...

Title: Waiting for Lightning Director: Jacob Rosenberg Another descendant of “Dogtown and Z-Boys,” Stacy Peralta’s influential 2001 documentary about the 1970s rise of popular skateboarding culture and the colorful characters who populated it, “Waiting for Lightning” details the life story of visionary skater, daredevil and X Games star Danny Way, building up to his 2005 attempt to jump the Great Wall of China. A slick technical package and a willingness to peer at least a bit into the difficult childhood and fractured psyche of its subject give this movie a leg up on a lot of its less inquisitive, like-minded, hagiographic stunt spectaculars, like “Nitro Circus: The Movie.” Way was [ Read More ]

Resembling a feature-length version of the human interest backstories that have lately come to dominate television sports coverage, Waiting for Lightning details the life and career of famed skateboarder Danny Way. Jacob Rosenberg’s essentially promotional documentary centers on his famed 2005 jump over the Great Wall of China, making its current release not exactly timely. Way is clearly a man willing to let his daring athletic feats do the talking for him, since he’s a virtual non-entity in this film celebrating his own accomplishments. Not heard from except in occasional voiceovers and archival news segments, he remains a

Waiting for Lightning
Directed by Jacob Rosenberg
Written by Bret Anthony Johnston
USA, 2012
Waiting for Lightning represents a war, a struggle of duality in documentary form. This 90-minute look at the life of skateboarder Danny Way and his insane but inspiring attempt to skateboard across and over the Great Wall of China, at its core, is unable to make these strands connect naturally. The film is well-made, certainly, and Way’s daring folly in China is fascinating. As hypnotic as it can be to watch him skate up and down a half-pipe, though, Danny Way’s story feels a bit too slight to fill out a feature-length film.
The biographical aspects of Way’s life are interspersed with the lead-up to the fateful stunt in 2005. Waiting for Lightning posits that Way, whose father died when Danny was very young, was innately equipped to pick up a skateboard and try new stunts,...

There's been a few* flawless documentaries about the skateboard industry. Two are Dogtown and the Z-Boys and Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, which were both made by the guy who perhaps saved skateboarding, Stacy Peralta. In those docs, he focuses on two different teams and how each separately changed the industry forever. That said, there are a lot of lone skateboarders still out there who shaped, shifted, and skewed the industry on their own. One of those fearless renegades is Danny Way, a man who's broken more world records and bones than corrupt politicians have laws and prostitutes. Jacob Rosenberg's Waiting for Lightning, a documentary about Way's rise to skateboard fame, fiercely tells the inspiring and often tragic story about his roots, coming from practically nothing, and...

You may remember a few weeks ago, I got to go on an epic trip to Shanghai in China for the Hp Global Influencer Summit 2012. While we were there, we got to attend many keynotes and see some of the brand new products that Hp have coming out over the course of the coming year. The highlight for me however was the presentation given by Jacob Rosenberg from Bandito Brothers who you may know recently brought out the new movie Act of Valour (or Act of Valor if you’re American).
During the presentation, Jacob introduced us to a couple of his latest projects, one being the brand new Hot Wheels movie which according to IMDb is called Hot Wheels: Fearless at the 500 but at the end of the trailer it was called Hot Wheels For Real. As you’ll see when you click play on the video below, it’s rather epic!

Former skateboarder Jacob Rosenberg’s first feature documentary Waiting for Lightning focuses on the evolution of Danny Way from his rough childhood to his emergence as a world famous skater whose daredevil antics would lead him to jump over the Great Wall of China. The film explores how Danny’s experience coming from a broken home led to his passion for skateboarding and his desire to constantly test his own limits. Judging from the film’s trailer, Waiting for Lightning promises to be an equal parts thrilling and deeply inspirational sports doc.

Bandito Brothers, the Los Angeles-based HD production and post facility that specializes in high-octane action content, is getting an infusion of capital from private-equity group Hyperion Entertainment & Media Group and Legendary Pictures chairman and CEO Thomas Tull.
The deal is valued at $18 million, with Hyperion and Tull taking a stake in Bandito, which will use the funds to develop a slate of films (fictional and documentary), TV and new-media properties.
Bandito was founded in late 2006 by Mike "Mouse" McCoy, the champion motorcycle racer and stuntman, and Scott Waugh, the filmmaker and former president of Stunts Unlimited. In addition to McCoy, who serves as CEO and creative director, and Waugh, who functions as producer, director and editor, Bandito's principals include COO Max Leitman and chief technology officer Jacob Rosenberg.
Steering clear of CGI effects in favor of pedal-to-the-metal action-adventure filmmaking, Bandito has turned out footage for such clients as BF Goodrich, Ford, Volkswagen, ESPN X-Games, Navy Special Warfare and Xbox Live that has been used across multiple platforms from commercials to Web sites.
