Let’s be honest, Super Mario Bros: The Movie is not a great movie. It’s not even a great video game adaptation. As a movie-loving teen the film was high on my must-see radar, so imagine my disappointment when I eventually saw the film on VHS… However since then I’ve come to appreciate the film for the bizarre Sf-tinged adventure movie that it is, rather than an adaptation of my all-time favourite video game franchise.

The guys over at The Super Mario Bros. Archive have an exclusive interview to share with you all, and we have a taste below. Parker Bennett and Terry Runté were the duo given the task of putting concepts for Super Mario Bros. into a cohesive story for the big screen, not easy right? As the Archive puts it: their creativity and drive to make an intriguing screenplay led to an intense collaborative effort with the directors, resulting in a story that laid the foundation for the rest of the project.
