Ted Danson brought his signature charm to CSI as Db Russell, a quirky yet brilliant crime scene investigator. While fans adored his unique take on the role, one of his personal hopes for the character never made it to the screen. Danson envisioned adding a touch of heartwarming flair to Db’s story, but the series had other plans.

Ted Danson may best be known for portraying Sam Malone on the beloved series Cheers, but Danson made waves when he appeared in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Sam Malone is one of only three characters to appear in all of Cheers 11 seasons. Since Cheers ended in 1993, Ted Danson has gone on to have leading and starring roles in renowned television shows, earning multiple nominations at the Primetime Emmys and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
More recently, Ted Danson was a part of The Good Place where he portrayed Michael, an after-life architect in the Good Place community where the other main cast reside. Throughout this role, Danson was able to show off his acting chops as a villain and in a comedic role, something very different from the suave and confident Sam Malone. Gil Grissom's exit posed a challenge for CSI's producers in finding a suitable replacement. Catherine Willows, Dr. Ray Langston, and D.B. Russell were all attempted replacements for Grissom. Petersen's iconic portrayal made finding a replacement for him challenging.
William Petersen as Gil Grissom was the face of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for several seasons until his exit from the series, and CBS tried to replace Grissom numerous times until the show ended in 2015. The procedural forensics crime drama television series, created by Anthony E. Zuiker, ran for 15 seasons after its premiere in October 2000, and its cultural impact is significant and undeniable. The original CSI changed the team's leader multiple times, unlike the Miami and NY spinoffs. Miami, NY, and Cyber maintained their main characters throughout their shows, although Cyber only ran for two seasons and welcomed D.B. Russell in season 2. Keeping the same protagonist made the CSI's spinoffs distinct from the original show
There is one thing that made CSI, also known as CSI: Las Vegas, different from all the other spinoffs, especially compared to CSI: Miami and CSI: NY. One of the most influential TV shows of its era, CSI ran for 15 seasons and led to three spinoffs as well as one revival, which is currently airing. The CSI universe once had three shows airing at the same time, with new cases in Vegas, Miami, and New York every week. While the original Crime Scene Investigation is widely regarded as the best CSI show, the spinoffs helped build the franchise’s legacy.

Strong characters, especially the leaders of the crime lab, are key to the success of CSI. Empathy and scientific skills are vital for a leader, but being too emotionally invested or not available enough can harm the team dynamic. Different leaders in the CSI universe have varying levels of success. Liev Schreiber's Michael Keppler was unpopular, while Ted Danson's Db Russell was loved for his sense of humor. Marg Helgenberger's Catherine Willows made mistakes but was consistent and competent. Paula Newsome's Max Roby in CSI: Vegas brings a new type of leader to the series. She is emotional and uses her emotions to fuel her work, creating a positive environment for her team. Mac Taylor in CSI: NY is tough and values not cutting corners, but also forms close bonds with his team despite his own emotional pain.

The CSI franchise has had massive success with over 800 episodes and some of the highest ratings in police procedural history. CSI: Cyber suffered from poor writing and forgettable characters, leading to its cancellation after two seasons. CSI: Vegas has received praise for recapturing the magic of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation while innovating in clever ways.
Debuting in the year 2000, the CSI franchise has experienced massive success across multiple shows, but despite the series' accomplishments, some entries are remembered more fondly than others. CSI used real Crime Scene Investigators as advisors, allowing fans to learn about the reality of investigating a crime. With a revival of the classic sitcom Frasier starring Kelsey Grammer in the works, there is a possibility that other spinoffs based around the cast of Cheers could follow. Grammer played the role of psychiatrist Frasier Crane for 20 consecutive years across both series and had reportedly been working on a return to his most famous role for several years. With Paramount+ having officially picked up the Frasier reboot, some are speculating about the possibility of other Cheers spinoffs also being produced.
Details on the Frasier reboot are sketchy beyond the fact that it will focus on Frasier Crane's new life in a city besides Seattle or Boston. It has also been confirmed that Grammer is the only actor from the original Frasier returning for the reboot, with both David Hyde Pierce and Jane Leeves (who played Niles Crane and Daphne Moon respectively) declaring they had no interest in a cameo on the new Frasier.

A review of tonight's "Fargo" coming up just as soon as I tell you to kiss my grits... "This kind of thing didn't work in Westerns, and it's not gonna work tonight." -Lou Howard Hawks' 1959 Western "Rio Bravo" didn't invent the idea of lawmen protecting a jail from outlaws looking to free one of their own. (After all, that trope's just a subset of the fort under siege premise that fueled so many Westerns.) But the movie was so entertaining(*) and so successful that Hawks and star John Wayne remade it twice more (as "El Dorado" and "Rio Lobo"), and it's served as inspiration to various unofficial remakes over the years, whether "Assault on Precinct 13," a recent episode of "Banshee," and tonight's crackling installment of "Fargo." (*) Even the musical interlude, designed to take advantage of the primary talents of Wayne's co-stars Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson, is fun.

Earlier this week, IndieWire's Sam Adams interviewed me, Mo Ryan, and Tim Goodman about the increasingly strange and outdated practice of reviewing new shows based just on the pilot episode. At one point, Sam asked what was the wrongest I ever was about a show's quality based on the pilot episode. I didn't have a great answer for that one, since I have a pretty good Spidey sense about when pilots aren't to be trusted (case in point: "Studio 60"), but I did think of an answer to a related question: What show was I most wrong in predicting its commercial success based on the pilot? The answer to that one's easy, and timely, because the show in question is airing a series finale special Sunday night at 9: "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." It's not that I was predicting its outright failure or anything. I actually found the pilot interesting...

This week, everyone has to find the time to grieve following last week's emotional events, while keeping it together and solving the murder of a woman and her child. In the second episode, beginning at 9.55pm, Laure digs into Sandrine Jaulin's family history, discovering more than she bargained for in the process.
It's the fourth round of blind auditions this week, which means more high notes, more tears and most importantly, more Twitter debate over Rita Ora's hair.
Following on from last week's Welsh invasion, a mournful version of 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)' and the return of Esmée Denters, we now have a man calling himself the Soho Hobo and Dawn 'with-the-horn'. She's a trumpet player, obviously.

Former Disney Channel star Bella Thorne is adding “murder suspect” to her resumé with a haunting turn on Sunday’s CSI (CBS, 10/9c). So what drew the Shake It Up star to the mean streets of Vegas?

CSI: Miami and CSI: New York are no more, soon we’ll have CSI:Cyber but who would have thought that we would still have CSI: Las Vegas? When reviewing CSI: Complete Season 13 the most noticeable thing is it is a show that survives not only by pure popularity, but that it constantly adapts itself, never letting itself stagnate.
Though this is season thirteen (unlucky for some) I’d say that the big difference came in season twelve with Ted Danson and Elisabeth Shue. My initial surprise really was just how good Ted Danson can act now, but in a way his introduction into CSI brought him back into the shows I take time to watch. With the character of D.B. Russell, Danson moved into CSI: Las Vegas and made the role as head of CSI his own, Laurence Fishburne did well and of course we miss William Petersen as Gil...

They say that all good things must come to an end, when CSI: New York came to an end it may have been a good series, but felt somewhat like the lonely third sibling compared to Las Vegas and Miami. This isn’t to say that CSI: NY was a bad show, but with the release of CSI: NY – Complete Season 9: The Final Season there was a feeling that it had run its course, though seeing it end was still a sad thing.
Season nine of CSI: NY begins looking at Mac’s recent brush with death and the effects that it has had on his life. Leaving him with memory problems he has to deal with this disability while still having to run the crime lab the best he can. With his love interest Christine (Megan Dodds) a huge support to him, her kidnapping also gives the chance...

Two small-town murders, connected yet separated by a quarter of a century, will bring Treat Williams to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for a guest stint on Wednesday's season finale, "Dead in His Tracks." (10/9c on CBS). The former Everwood star plays security guard Sam Bishop, who was an investigator on the first murder back in 1989 but retired from cop work in frustration when he couldn't solve the case. Now Bishop has reappeared and D.B. Russell (Ted Danson) is leery of him — but suspicion soon turns to awe.
"It turns out Bishop was a man way ahead of his time — a proto-csi," says Andrew Dettmann, who wrote the episode. "So much of our modern CSI work uses technology that wasn't available in Bishop's day, yet he was using his own inventions to solve crime — like a homemade recipe for detecting gunshot residue and a jerry-rigged camera and weather balloon that did...

A 300th episode is a milestone extremely few series get to celebrate.
Maybe that doesn't seem as surprising for a drama that has spent much of its run heralded as "the most popular show in the world," but it's a major moment for "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" nevertheless.
The globally successful Anthony E. Zuiker-created procedural -- which inspired much of what CBS' prime-time schedule has looked like for the past decade-plus -- marks the event Wednesday, Oct. 23, with a story that acknowledges "CSI" history in a number of ways. The plot revisits a cold case from the Las Vegas forensics team's early days, and founding co-star Marg Helgenberger (who will be back on CBS weekly this winter in "Intelligence") returns as Catherine Willows.
Paul Guilfoyle, alias Capt. Jim Brass, has been with "CSI" from the start. "It's kind of an abstract number," the actor reasons to Zap2it of reaching the 300th tale.

Don't call Ted Danson and John Ratzenberger "Sam" and "Cliff" ... at least not this time.
The actors who co-starred for 11 seasons on the classic sitcom "Cheers" reunite Wednesday (Oct. 9) on Danson's current series, CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," in a story that echoes a real-life 2003 tragedy. Ratzenberger plays the owner of a nightclub where a fire takes four lives, prompting D.B. Russell (Danson) and his forensics team to investigate.
"First off, it was like, 'We haven't seen each other in a while. What's this going to be like?'" Danson tells Zap2it. "I was a bit nervous, but it was like falling off a log and getting back on. It was so sweet. We hung out in my trailer between shots and just reminisced and caught up with each other."
Danson adds he's greatly pleased with Ratzenberger's "CSI" work: "His performance? Wow! I got a little preview when I...

On the surface, the Season 14 premiere of CSI may feel a bit familiar.
After all, the show's premiere one year ago found the team searching for a team member's abducted loved one. And while this year, D.B. Russell (Ted Danson) & Co. are trying to find kidnapped team member Morgan (Elisabeth Harnois) and Ellie (Teal Redmann) the daughter of Brass (Paul Guilfoyle), that's pretty much where the similarities end.
Fall Preview: Get scoop on your favorite returning shows

Cliff Clavin is going inside the yellow tape!
EW has learned that John Ratzenberger — who played the lovable mailman on Cheers — will reunite with his former co-star Ted Danson in a fall episode of CSI on CBS.
Ratzenberger will play a jaded, burned out club owner who’s been in the business for over 30 years, and he’s dazed when his business — and human lives — go up in smoke. And yep, he’ll get to play opposite Sammy Malone — er, we mean D.B. Russell (Danson).
The episode will air in October. CSI returns on Sept. 25.

Ted Danson's daughter Kate Danson is on the case at CSI. CBS has announced that the actress will guest star in the April 3 episode of her father's long-running hit. She'll play lawyer Jill McDermott in the installment where CSI's crack team of investigators go up against a serial killer. The opportunity to face off against night-shift supervisor D.B. I was really fortunate to get to work with him on CSI. It was really great going head to head with him." Kate,...

Ted Danson's daughter, Kate Danson, will appear on an episode of "CSI" with her dad this season. She will guest-star on the April 3 episode of the CBS show, playing lawyer Jill McDermott.
In the episode, the investigators of "CSI" find a body in a forest reserve. They later discover evidence of a serial killer and his creepy lair of death. Jill McDermott ends up facing off against D.B. Russell (Danson) as part of the case.
Talking to WENN, Kate Danson described her role. "I play a lawyer who knows she's in the right and the CSI team have done something wrong. So I come pretty hard at my dad and dig into him, which was a lot of fun to play," Danson said. "I was really fortunate to get to work with him on 'CSI.' It was so much fun. Zap2it: Do you like doing series crossovers, as "CSI: NY" does with "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" this week?
Gary Sinise: I do. It's fun. I went to the "CSI: Miami" set when we did a crossover there, and [former "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" co-star] Laurence Fishburne came to our set, but I never went to the "CSI" Vegas set before. It was nice to go over there and work with those folks.
There are people there who have been on that show ever since it started, and they're happy and excited about doing the work. They still love it. They've had some cast changes there, but there's a consistency with some of the people. This is kind of a historic franchise in television history, and to be able to spend time with people who were there when it all started was fun.
