Ahead of the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, the Television Academy has compiled a list of the 75 Most Impactful TV Moments.
In collaboration with a group of academic professionals, the Television Academy scoured eight decades on television in search of the moments that have made the most impact on viewers, the industry and culture.
Chosen were classic moments (from the late 1940s until the 2020s) of TV’s most beloved programs, as well as news events that brought the U.S. and the world together to watch them in real time. Many of the selected televised events influenced politics and shifted the common wisdom about race, Lgtbq+ representation and more.
At the top of the list is the Apollo 11 moon landing, followed by coverage of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade center and the Beatles’ 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.
You can read the entire list here and watch a video compilation above.

Anthony Anderson has been named to host the Emmy Awards by Fox and the Television Academy after the Hollywood strikes delayed the 75th edition.
“With our industry’s recent challenges behind us, we can get back to what we love — dressing up and honoring ourselves. And there’s no better celebratory moment to bring the creative community together than the milestone 75th Emmy Awards,” Anderson said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Black-ish star will emcee the live telecast from the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles on Jan. 15, 2024 on Fox, with the Emmys to be available the next day on Hulu. “When Fox asked me to host this historic telecast, I was over the moon that Taylor Swift was unavailable, and now I can’t wait to be part of the biggest night in television,” Anderson added.
He recently hosted the music gaming series We Are Family for Fox and executive producer Jamie Foxx.

Over the 46 years since the acrimonious divorce of the two groups behind the Emmys, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS, or the TV Academy, which now presides over the Primetime Emmys) and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS, which now presides over the Daytime, Children’s & Family, News & Documentary and Technology & Engineering Emmys), the relationship between the two organizations has been frosty, to say the least.
But the further that the disputes that led to their separation have faded into the past, and given that the parties in this divorce share custody of a precious child — namely, the world-famous Emmy statuette — the leaders of both organizations have become increasingly interested in coordination and collaboration, if not remarriage just yet, they told The Hollywood Reporter and Variety during a virtually unprecedented joint interview earlier this week.

A funny thing happened on the way to the Colosseum. That unbelievably epic three-minute Pepsi commercial you surely remember from the early 2000’s where Britney, Pink, and Beyoncé at their full-on fiercest joined forces to commandeer the ancient Roman amphitheater with a diva-liciously badass riff on Queen’s “We Will Rock You”… yeah, you don’t actually remember that.

Exclusive: Cris Abrego, the longtime Banijay U.S. chief who recently set up his own production group with Eva Longoria, is expected to become the new boss of the TV Academy.
Deadline understands Abrego is the frontrunner for the position. The election to name the next boss is set to be held next week but sources have told Deadline that Abrego is already being talked about by some as the next Chairman and CEO of the Primetime Emmys operator.
He is expected to replace Frank Scherma, the co-founder of RadicalMedia, who was “termed out” after running the TV Academy for the past four years.
Abrego’s appointment would further raise the profile on unscripted television at the Emmys as he is the first Television Academy chair to come from the reality TV world.
His appointment is not a major surprise as Abrego has been involved with the Television Academy for a number of years.

As November approaches, we’re now just a little more than two months away from the postponed Primetime Emmy Awards, currently scheduled to air January 15 on Fox. And yet, the network, Television Academy and producer Jesse Collins Entertainment have yet to name a host or hosts. At the risk of repeating myself, I will once again elevate my idea: Fox staples Ken Jeong and Joel McHale, along with their “Community” pal Yvette Nicole Brown. (Read my previous column about it here.)
And this time I have some backing: McHale himself. I recently got the most unusual pitch in my email: With the SAG-AFTRA strike ongoing, McHale can’t talk about the upcoming “Community” movie, his Fox sitcom “Animal Control,” or really, almost anything. But he can talk about Klondike ice cream bars.

Normally, it would be a little jarring for it to be August and still not have an official Emmy host announcement. But these are not normal times. This week, the Television Academy and Fox officially moved the 75th Primetime Emmys to January 15 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), marking the first such postponement since 2001.
In a previous column I made a strong case for moving the ceremony to November, when at least the Emmys wouldn’t feel too stale or crash into Oscars season. But since Fox is moving forward with January, the silver lining is that there’s a lot more time — five months, as a matter of fact — for producer Jesse Collins Entertainment, along with Fox and the TV Academy, to figure out how to make this major Emmy anniversary a show to remember.
Much of that will come down to who hosts the telecast. The last time Fox aired the Emmys,...

The show must go on! On Thursday, Fox announced the 75th annual Emmy Awards will air Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, after previously being postponed due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.
According to the press release, the Emmys will not be live and will instead be filmed over two consecutive nights — Saturday, Jan. 6, and Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024 — before the Jan. 15 airdate.
Held at the Peacock Theater at LA Live in Los Angeles, California, TV’s biggest night will honour the talented performers, writers, directors and craftspeople whose work has entertained, inspired and connected viewers across the globe throughout the past year.
Last month, it was announced that the Emmys are no longer taking place on Monday, Sept. 18, as was originally planned. Sources told Et that the 75th annual event would be rescheduled to an undetermined future date.

In the wake of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, Et has learned that the 2023 Emmy Awards are no longer taking place on Monday, Sept. 18 as was originally planned.
Sources tell Et that the 75th annual event is being changed to a currently undetermined future date.
Two days before the SAG-AFTRA strike began, the 2023 Emmy nominations were announced by Television Academy Chair Frank Scherma and Yvette Nicole Brown. Shows like “Succession”, “Abbott Elementary”, and “Ted Lasso” received an impressive amount of nominations.
On July 14, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), which represent more than 160,000 film and television actors, officially went on strike after they were unable to reach an agreement with major Hollywood studios and streamers by the July 12 deadline. With nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards revealed right on schedule Wednesday morning complete with the usual nominee reactions and interviews, it might be the last time this year’s crop of nominees actually gets to talk about their nominations before the voting period closes in what is known as Phase Two of Emmy season. That is because a Television Academy spokesperson has confirmed that even in light of today’s announcement that SAG-AFTRA will be on strike as of midnight Pt, the current schedule with ballots going out on August 17 and due back in on August 28 is going to remain in place.
At today’s SAG press conference, Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said in no uncertain terms that members would not be allowed to participate in any interviews, panels, FYC events, awards shows, etc. In other words, their opportunity to campaign has ended, at least as long as the strike is in effect.

Scherma started the live stream off by introducing himself and the Emmys. “And what a great way to recognize the importance of the writers and performers and all those who created such phenomenal work over the past season,” he said.
His speech referenced the writer’s strike that is currently plaguing the film and TV industry.

Besides TV Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma’s brief reference to “the ongoing guild negotiations” at the top of the nominations announcement, today has been mostly Emmy business as usual, with television industry types and fans celebrating the ones who landed nominations and lamenting those who were snubbed.
But this is not a typical Emmy nominations day. Far from it. The 2023 Emmy nominations were announced two and a half months into a WGA strike, just hours before writers may be joined by actors in the work stoppage as AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA’s negotiations are currently set to conclude tonight.
As writer Brittani Nichols wrote on Twitter this morning shortly after landing her first Emmy nomination as part of the producing team of Outstanding Comedy Series nominee Abbott Elementary, “because of the ongoing writers’ strike, my ability to enjoy this accomplishment has become more complex than usual.”

The 75th Emmy Award nominations come at an interesting time in the industry. Yvette Nicole Brown and Television Academy Chairman Frank Scherma announced the nominees today via a livestream, just one day after the 10-week mark of the WGA strike and one day before a potential SAG-AFTRA strike. There’s a slight cloud over the annual celebration of the best television and performances of the year as those who create remain engaged in a tumultuous fight against the AMPTP. But none of that is stopping the Television Academy from doling out honors.

A potential actors strike may be looming, but the 75th Primetime Emmys looks full-steam ahead, for now.
Announcing the nominations today at the historic Hollywood Athletic Club, Yvette Nicole Brown and TV Academy boss Frank Scherma read out some familiar and once again strongly tipped names including Succession, The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Ted Lasso and The White Lotus. However, it was the names and shows the past Emmy nominee and the RadicalMedia co-founder did not utter that left some hopefuls with a bad taste in their mouths this morning.
Noting that they hoped the “ongoing guild negotiations can come to equitable and swift end,” the duo did not mention the work of a Dame of the realm, a real prince, a big-screen legend or, yet again, Yellowstone.

That was then followed by “The Last of Us,” which scored 24 noms, “The White Lotus” with 23, “Barry” with 11 and “House of the Dragon” with eight. “Being Mary Tyler Moore,” “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” “The Other Two,” “100 Foot Wave,” “Moonage Daydream,” “Love and Death” and “Perry Mason” also received nominations, bringing the network’s total nominations up to 127.
On the drama side of things, “Succession,” “The Last of Us” and “The White Lotus” stand as the most-nominated frontrunners. For comedies, Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” led the pack with 21 nominations followed by Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (14) and FX’s “The Bear” (13). Finally, Netflix dominated the Limited Series category. Both...

It’s good to be HBO — er, “HBO Max” — er, “HBO / Max.” How big was the pay cabler-slash-streamer when it comes to this year’s Emmy nominations? In the supporting actor in a drama category, the outlet held all eight slots (on the backs of just two programs: “Succession” and “The White Lotus”), and in supporting actress, it was six of the eight.
In a nomination announcement filled with surprises, there was one that was absolutely a given: “Succession” would dominate, and, Roy, did it ever: The outgoing HBO drama scored 27 nominations — including best drama, lead actress (Sarah Snook) and a record three lead actor noms. Even a good chunk of the show’s supporting cast managed nods, including J. Smith-Cameron, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, Alexander Skarsgård and (for the Conheads in the house) Alan Ruck.
Whatever you call it (they’d now like to be HBO-slash-Max), the network actually...

The 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards nominations are being revealed Wednesday morning, with Yvette Nicole Brown and Television Academy chairman Frank Scherma reading out the major categories beginning at 8:30 a.m. Pt.
This year’s Emmy Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held September 18 live on Fox, but a writers strike and a potential SAG-AFTRA strike could change that if no talent is available for the primetime showcase celebrating the best of TV over the past year.
Last year’s Emmys saw HBO’s Succession and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso won the top drama and comedy series honors, respectively, with those shows expected to be back in the mix this year after each wrapped their strong runs this past season.

As Hollywood grinds to a halt with the ongoing WGA strike and potential SAG-AFTRA strike, the 2023 Emmy nominations were announced as planned on July 12. Television Academy Chair Frank Scherma and actor Yvette Nicole Brown presented the nominations live from Los Angeles.
This year’s Emmys follow a spate of TV finales from acclaimed series like “Succession,” “Barry,” “Ted Lasso,” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” all of which concluded at the end of May, just in time for the May 31 deadline. Unlike previous years, hanging episodes that air after this deadline — whether or not they add up to a critical mass — would disqualify a show from eligibility in 2023. The season also saw shakeups in the Variety Series categories, as well as shows like “Jury Duty” and “The Rehearsal,” which challenged the boundaries of scripted and unscripted television.
For those following IndieWire’s Awards Predictions, some categories shook out exactly as editor Marcus Jones expected.

This year’s Emmys will take place Monday, September 18 at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. Fans can watch the live awards show on Fox — though that date could ostensibly change in the event of a dual-union strike with SAG joining the WGA, where a SAG work stoppage would prohibit talent from participating in publicity activities and premieres — and red carpets. However, SAG-AFTRA hasn’t declared publicly the full restrictions for members during a strike.
