In 2004, Degrassi: The Next Generation aired what would become their most controversial episode with “Accidents Will Happen,” which premiered in Canada in two parts on January 26 and February 9, 2004. However, the episode would not see the light of day on Degrassi’s U.S. network, The N, for another two years. This sparked outrage among Degrassi fans and confusion among the show’s stars, who couldn’t understand why, out of every sensitive topic Degrassi had touched upon, the storyline in “Accidents Will Happen” was too much for America to handle.

“Degrassi” fans have a reason to celebrate: a three-part documentary series is in the works about the iconic Canadian teen soap.
Featuring behind-the-scenes footages and interviews, the docu-series promises to “dive into ‘Degrassi’ lore and the teenage experience with its creators, cast, crew and fans, as well as generations of filmmakers influenced by the franchise’s 40-year legacy.” It is set to be produced by family entertainment producer WildBrain (which owns the “Degrassi” franchise) with fellow Canadian production company Peacock Alley.
Originally created by Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood in 1979, “Degrassi” has been a touchstone for teens and young adults for over four decades, reflecting their experiences of adolescence and tackling hard-hitting storylines such as teen pregnancy, racism, AIDS and child abuse.
The show launched the careers of a number of well-known names including recording artist Drake, Raymond Ablack (“Ginny & Georgia”), Nina Dobrev (“Vampire Diaries”), Shenae Grimes (“90210”) and...

As it turns out, "whatever it takes" is not enough. The famous Canadian drama series "Degrassi" has been a teen favorite for over three decades, so people were thrilled when it was announced that the series was getting a reboot at HBO Max. The streamer felt like a perfect fit, considering "Degrassi" is the grandmother of other popular shows like "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" and the teen phenomenon known as "Euphoria."
Created by Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood in 1979, "Degrassi" has its roots in a series of short films called "The Kids of Degrassi Street." It would be nearly a decade before the show "Degrassi Junior High" would debut on CBC, which led to the follow-up series "Degrassi High" from 1989-1991. It's the 14 seasons of "Degrassi: The Next Generation," however, that made the show a certifiable teen classic outside of Canada. Fans were devastated when the show went off...

Nearly six years after Degrassi: The Next Generation wrapped in 2015, co-creator Linda Schuyler and stars Stefan Brogren, Aislinn Paul, Shane Kippel, Luke Bilyk, Munro Chambers, Lauren Collins and more reunited to celebrate the series’ lasting impact.
The Degrassi: The Next Generation reunion kicked off this year’s Atx Television Festival on Friday. For many of the cast members, reuniting with their on-screen classmates was just like meeting with longtime school buddies as they reminisced on favorite moments from the teen drama.
“What a joy it is to be reminded of those scenes we’ve done together over the years,” Schuyler told her team.
From scenes about sexuality and abortion to mental health issues, Schuyler and the Degrassi cast reflected on how the series unapologetically tackled controversial topics, which often caused more of a stir in the United States than in Canada when they first aired. Today’s shows like Euphoria,...

Over the 20 years Nick Adams has worked for GLAAD, the organization’s longtime director of transgender media and representation has helped educate not only the news media but also the millions of people who have turned on their televisions, read a newspaper — or even played the “Sims” video game.
Unassuming and humble, Adams, 54, has quietly toiled behind the scenes during some of the most important moments in transgender visibility and acceptance in media over two decades.
Adams helped introduce Chaz Bono, previously known to the world as an out lesbian activist before undergoing a very public transition in 2009. Bono became one of the earliest and highest-profile transgender individuals worldwide.
In 2010, Adams worked with “Degrassi” showrunner Linda Schuyler and helped develop the Canadian show’s first trans character — well before Netflix hit “Orange Is the New Black” made Laverne Cox, the transgender actor and activist, a star.

Drake’s former castmates from “Degrassi: The Next Generation” had a blast reuniting for his latest video, “I’m Upset,” shot this past weekend in downtown Toronto from the Air Canada Centre, where the rap star’s beloved Raptors play basketball, in addition to the Degrassi set in north Toronto, where the long-running teen drama still films.
He released the video Wednesday night and it already has more than 2.5 million views on YouTube.
From 2001 to 2009, Drake, then known by his birth name Aubrey Graham, played Jimmy Brooks in the series, a rich kid who ends up in a wheelchair after getting shot.
He appeared in over 100 episodes, and again in “Degrassi: Minis” (2005-2007). He also released his first mixtape, “Room For Improvement,” in 2007.

If you’re a Canadian under the age of 40, you’ve never known a world without “Degrassi.” One of television’s most globally iconic shows, the teen soap opera has been on the air in one form or another since 1979. And that’s thanks to the hard work of creator Linda Schuyler, who brought the show to life, as she explains below, because she was so frustrated by the fact that the junior high school kids she was teaching had no television made specifically for them.

Good morning!
The Arrested Development documentary makers are seeking some finishing funds. I'm sure this will happen in no time.
Annie Clark, Cristine Prosperi and Degrassi producers Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn talked with EW and there are a lot of great tidbits about how Fiona wasn't intended to be a lesbian character but evolved into one, and the future of her relationship with Imogen. It's a must-read for Fimogen fans!
Jane Lynch went on Gwissues this week to talk about some upcoming roles. There's never enough of the Lynch.
Author Willa Cather's personal letters are about to be published and it sounds like lesbian rumors might be true. It also appears she was born on the same day as me, so clearly she must be gay. That's how it works.
Out comic artist Nicole Georges wrote about her teenage obsession with Kurt Cobain for NPR.

"Degrassi" is nominated for an Emmy for Best Children's Program, but it's not your typical kids' show. Aimed at teens, the Canadian drama addresses subject matter more mature than the category's other four nominees: Disney Channel's "Good Luck Charlie" and "Wizards of Waverly Place," and Nickelodeon's "iCarly" and "Victorious." "We pride ourselves at 'Degrassi' on being fearless in terms of the issues that we will take on," says executive producer Linda Schuyler (pictured, inset). "When we won the Peabody a couple of years ago, it was for the current storyline we have that we're very proud of, which is our transgender character. When we received that award they said to us, '"Degrassi" neither trivialized nor over-sensationalized the issue,' and … that's what we aim for." This year, the show is nominated for its episode...

Fans of "The L.A. Complex" have reason to celebrate. The MuchMusic (and now The CW) show has been ordered to shoot 13 more episodes, expanding its first season from six episodes to an impressive 19.
The series, which follows a group of aspiring Hollywood hopefuls all crammed in an L.A. apartment, is produced by Degrassi's Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn, who know a thing or two about turning a groundbreaking series into a phenomenon.
"Bell Media [the entity that owns MuchMusic] believed in this project from the very beginning and always knew what broadcasters around the world are now getting excited about, that an authentic series about young adults struggling to follow their dreams can resonate with audiences and critics alike," said executive producer Stohn in a release. "We can't wait to create more episodes."
Co-executive producer Martin Gero added: "The team here is very excited about jumping back into this lush and provocative world to...

The bosses at Glee are still trying to figure out what to do with their graduating seniors. What they should do is take a cue from Degrassi — the Canadian drama now has the formula down pat. For the past few seasons it has (more or less) let its matriculating students head off to unseen colleges and replenished the high school’s halls with a crop of equally intriguing underclassmen.
