Paramount Turned Down Offers from Streamers to Buy ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Paramount Turned Down Offers from Streamers to Buy ‘Top Gun: Maverick’
Paramount Pictures has spent much of the pandemic selling off its major titles to the big streamers, including Amazon Studios and Netflix. In 2020 alone, Paramount sold films including Aaron Sorkin’s Oscar contender “The Trial of the Chicago 7” to Netflix, as well as Michael Showalter’s action comedy “The Lovebirds.” Meanwhile, Paramount sold the rights to Tom Clancy thriller “Without Remorse,” starring Michael B. Jordan, as well as the Eddie Murphy sequel “Coming 2 America,” to Amazon. Paramount also shuttled “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” to Hulu at the last minute.

But two of the biggest titles still on Paramount’s slate for 2021 are “Top Gun: Maverick,” set for a July 2 release after being repeatedly postponed due first to post-production issues and then the pandemic, and the seventh “Mission: Impossible” film, scheduled for November 19. According to a recent report out of the Wall Street Journal, both Netflix and

‘No Time to Die’, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’, ‘Morbius’ & more amongst latest release delays

‘No Time to Die’, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’, ‘Morbius’ & more amongst latest release delays
The ticking time bomb we all expected to see has finally exploded with no real end in sight of Covid-19. Movie Studios have yet again shuffled their 2021 film slates with Bond’s ‘No Time To Die’ and ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’, amongst others, taking yet another delay.

For the third time, Daniel Craig’s final outing as James Bond has been moved. Initially slated for a 2020 release, the tentpole blockbuster had originally been moved to April 2nd, it has now moved to October 8th 2021. With around a $200 million price tag on the movie, MGM and International distributor Universal rely heavily on box office receipts to make back the money spent on the movie, so it would make sense for them to wait until Cinemas can fully reopen across the world to packed audiences.

Sony soon followed suit by announcing the delay in release to the following films on their slate;

Searchlight dates more 2021 films, no mention of ‘The French Dispatch’

Searchlight dates more 2021 films, no mention of ‘The French Dispatch’
Antlers, Nightmare Alley, among features dated for second half of year.

Searchlight Pictures announced on Thursday (January 21) a raft of 2021 theatrical releases that was notable for the omission of The French Dispatch.

Screen understands from industry insiders that the studio is thought to be waiting for clarity on when this year’s Cannes Film Festival will take place as it targets a Croisette premiere for Wes Anderson’s 2020 Cannes Label selection.

Latest speculation points to a postponed start in late June, July or possibly even August for the festival, which is currently dated for May 11-22, although few believe it will stick to those dates.

Searchlight Sets Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Nightmare Alley’ for December, ‘French Dispatch’ Still Undated

Searchlight Sets Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Nightmare Alley’ for December, ‘French Dispatch’ Still Undated
Searchlight Pictures has updated its 2021 release calendar, dating Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” for December 3. The date puts del Toro’s latest in the thick of the 2021-2022 awards season. Searchlight appears to be following the same release plan it gave del Toro’s last movie, “The Shape of Water,” which started its U.S. theatrical rollout on the first weekend of December. “The Shape of Water” debuted at the Venice Film Festival, winning the Golden Lion, and it seems likely “Nightmare Alley” will show up on the fall film festival circuit.

Del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” is adapted by the filmmaker, and film critic Kim Morgan, from the 1946 William Lindsay Gresham novel of the same name. The ensemble cast includes Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Rooney Mara, and David Strathairn. The film originally eyed a release in 2020, but pandemic-related production delays

The film will be based on the documentary of the same name that was directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato from World of Wonder. Abe Sylvia wrote the script for the feature. Searchlight Dates Sundance Acquisition ‘The Night House’, ‘Nightmare Alley’ & More For Later This Year
Searchlight Pictures, ever the believer in theatrical, has dated four releases for 2021.

Their Sundance horror pickup The Night House will turn its lights on July 16. The David Bruckner directed titles which Searchlight shelled out a reported $12M for last January follows a widow (Rebecca Hall) who begins to uncover her recently deceased husband’s disturbing secrets.

Their Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker televangelist biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye will debut on Sept. 24. The pic, directed by Michael Showalter and written by Abe Sylvia, takes an intimate look at the rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. In the 1970s and ’80s, Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim Bakker, rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love, acceptance and prosperity. However, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled their carefully constructed empire.

Winter 2021 TV Preview

Winter 2021 TV Preview
Every New Year’s celebration comes along with some excitement, pomp, and circumstance, but rarely has the countdown from 10 felt more urgent in the waning seconds of 2020. Yes, 2020 is just a number and yes, time is just an abstract concept created to explain celestial bodies moving around one another. But darn it all, it still feels great to see “2021” at the top of this article.

2021 will hopefully come along with some good news (though admittedly early signs aren’t looking great on that front). At the very least, however, it should come along with some interesting TV options. Due to Covid-19 production delays, there perhaps aren’t as many confirmed release dates for early 2021 as we’ve seen in years’ past. Still, there are plenty of exciting new and returning TV shows to keep you occupied throughout the chilly season.

Winter 2021 is when Marvel makes its triumphant return to television.
