The White House responded for at least the second time in as many days today to tweets from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in a war of words over, well — the parties also argued over what the argument was about.
Bezos tweeted this morning that “the administration tried their best to add another 3.5 Trillion to federal spending. They failed, but if they had succeeded, inflation would be even higher than it is today, and inflation today is at a 40 year high.”
White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates replied by quote-tweeting an assessment from Jeff Stein, White House Economics Reporter for the Bezos-owned Washington Post in which Stein countered his paper’s owner directly.
“The Wh’s long-term spending plans were offset by major higher taxes on the rich and corporations, leading Larry Summers and other prominent economists to argue that their inflationary impact would likely be negligible by reducing demand.

White House staffers have finally found the line they won’t cross when it comes to supporting President Trump. That line is helping ordinary Americans.
The Washington Post‘s Jeff Stein reported that Trump told allies on a Thursday call that he wanted Covid-19 relief checks to be “at least” $1,200-2,000 per person and was preparing to publicly call on Congress to include those checks in their Covid-19 bill. Payments of that size would provide meaningful relief to people who are suffering, as well as stimulating the economy as a whole.

Filing taxes is not fun. Congress wants to keep it that way.
On Tuesday, ProPublica reported that the Taxpayer First Act passed last week by the House Ways and Means Committee includes a provision that makes it illegal for the IRS to create an online tax filing system. Why would Congress do this? If the IRS were to offer a simple, free online portal into which Americans could file their taxes, it would cripple the for-profit tax industry. H&R Block and Intuit, which makes TurboTax, are among the companies...

People Explains: Who Is Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore — and Does He Still Have a Chance to Win?
Almost nothing about Roy Moore’s candidacy for Senate has been without controversy.
First, he challenged incumbent Luther Strange, who had been appointed to replace Jeff Sessions when he was tapped by President Donald Trump to serve as U.S. Attorney General. During the primary, he waved a gun at an election eve campaign rally, lacked support from the Republican establishment and has called Islam a “false religion.”
But none of that scared off Alabama voters on Sept. 26, who supported Moore in the Republican primary runoff for Sessions’ vacated Senate seat.
The former chief justice for Alabama’s Supreme Court defeated Strange,...

Rock star Tom Petty, who died Monday at 66, left behind a legacy of songs that reached inside and stirred the soul with a combination of frustration, wistfulness, rebellion, cynicism, elation, and restlessness. But Petty also might be remembered for some of the most iconic music videos of the 1980s — the heyday of MTV and VH1 as TV jukeboxes.
Petty’s landmark work included 1985’s psychedelic “Don’t Come Around Here No More, and The Atlantic digs in pretty deep into the backstory to how the song and video came about, which was inspired by an encounter between the Eurythmic’s Dave Stewart and Stevie Nicks.

Protestors in wheelchairs were dragged by police out of a Gop Obamacare repeal hearing on Monday, according to footage shared by Huffington Post reporter Matt Fuller and others.
Demonstrators chanted “No cuts to Medicaid, save our liberty” as they interrupted the Monday afternoon Senate Finance Committee hearing where Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham and Bill Cassidy were due to defend their namesake health care bill.
In one video Fuller posted on Twitter, a demonstrator in a wheelchair can be heard screaming the same protest chant as a police officer wheeled her backwards out of the room.

Graham Nash has plenty of experience with the vagaries of rock & roll documentaries. Take Woodstock, for one: "There were three days of really good music and the movie was three hours," he says, "so there are a lot of great performances that have never been seen apart from bootlegs." No one knows that more than Nash, since Neil Young refused to be filmed during Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's career-making set at the festival. In the film, you'll hear an announcer say, "Crosby, Stills, Nash" – but no Young. "Neil threatened to deck anybody who filmed him,...

Written by Nat Mauldin and Jeff Stein, the film follows a single father dealing with his young daughter’s terminal illness and his overbearing mother-in-law’s interference. The most remarkable thing about Sacha Gervasi's "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" may be that it is unarguably one of the most heart-swelling and moving films ever made about rock 'n' roll, and at the same time, it is very unlikely to convert any viewers into passionate Anvil fans. In fact, the movie barely bothers to make a case for Anvil, the orphaned band maudit from the '80s surge in heavy metal heavy hitters, as musicians, and doesn't allow you to hear a single song all the way through. (Contrast that to, say, Jeff Stein's "The Kids Are Alright," which has certainly transformed innocent non-partisans into life-grabbing Who fans, and did it with whole songs played beginning to end.)
Frankly, Anvil's thunking, adolescent caterwaul isn't very promising, even if Anvil's commercial fate seems less surprising in retrospect than the success of bands like Mötley Crüe, Anthrax and Megadeth.

Jeff Stein’s explosive report on Rep. Jane Harman (D-ca) has veteran poli-bloggers scratching their heads. Is this scandal the real deal, they’re wondering, or is somebody in the intelligence community sticking it to Harman as payback for some obscure past offense? To be perfectly honest, most of what Harman did sounds harmless enough, given the carpet-sucking ethical standards of Washington, D.C. She reportedly told a “suspected Israeli agent”—or, if the blogosphere’s best guess is to be believed, some rich Egyptian-Israeli-American who made a killing on the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers craze—that she’d talk to someone at the Justice Department about possibly reducing the “espionage-related charges” facing two former members of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee. In exchange, the “suspected Israeli agent” allegedly offered to talk to Nancy Pelosi, then the House minority leader, about making Harman the head of the Intelligence Committee,...
