John Carpenter's 1981 sci-fi film "Escape from New York" is set in the far-flung future of 1997 when crime in across America has suddenly increased 400%. In response, the government has walled off the island of Manhattan, transforming the entire city into a massive prison. Food is airdropped in every so often. All escape bridges are lousy with landmines. There are no guards apart from those walking the parapets. It's a lawless land with no escape. Any criminals and ne'er-do-wells are forced inside and left to their own devices.
The protagonist of "Escape from New York" (I hesitate to call him a hero) is Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), a freelance badass and thief who was recently apprehended by the government (represented by Lee Van Cleef). Snake is told that Air Force One has exploded over New York, and an escape pod containing the president (Donald Pleasence) has landed inside the New York prison.

Who will be included for the special “In Memoriam” segment for Sunday night’s Oscars 2022 ceremony? For almost all other Academy Awards productions since the 1990s, producers typically select 40-50 people from the various branches. The 2021 segment had close to 100 people in a particularly fast-paced three minutes that was not very well-received since many of them were only on screen for a second or two.

Warner Bros’ Dune and Disney’s Encanto scored a leading four wins each at the 20th annual Ves Awards, which were handed out tonight at the Beverly Hilton.
Denis Villeneuve’s epic starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya won the marquee Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature prize — presented by Villeneuve himself. Dune also took trophies for Model, Effects Simulations and Compositing & Lighting. Even though the film opened day-and-date on HBO Max, it still was able to thrive in theaters with a $41 million opening weekend that exceeded expectations and led to a quick greenlight for a sequel weeks later.
Encanto, from directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard, danced away with the top toon honor — Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature — and also won for Animated Character, Created Environment and Virtual Cinematography.

As early images of Russian tanks and smoldering buildings emerged from Ukraine last week, the first thought that crossed Rep. Hakeem Jeffries’ (D-n.Y.) mind concerned the safety of the Ukrainian people. His next thought was the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump. “My first reaction, in the horror of the attack, was, ‘This is why what we did was so important,’” Jeffries, one of the managers of that impeachment, recalls.

Alec Baldwin made his fourth Season 45 appearance as Donald Trump on “SNL” this week, but he was far from the only celebrity cameo in the show’s latest cold open.
In a sketch that took on, as usual, one of this week’s biggest political stories — you know, the one where several world leaders were caught on camera making fun of Trump at a Nato conference — Paul Rudd showed up as French prime minister Emmanuel Macron, along with Jimmy Fallon as Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and James Corden as British prime minister Boris Johnson.
The sketch began with narration that acknowledge the real-life happenings but then claimed that the video we saw was nothing compared with what went on later that day in the Nato cafeteria.

The impeachment inquiry against President Trump was once again grist for the Saturday Night Live mill, with Lorne Michaels tapping former cast member (and current host) Will Ferrell to play the hearing’s latest breakout star, U.S. Ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland.
Instead of specifically sending up this week’s public hearings (as it did last week), SNL opted instead to focus its cold open on the impromptu presser Trump (Alec Baldwin, reprising his role) held on the White House lawn, during which he dismissed Sondland’s claims of quid pro quo while also denying even knowing him.

The House impeachment inquiry into President Donald J. Trump is again being broadcast live this week, with three days of public hearings. This week’s hearings began on Tuesday, November 19 and will end on Thursday, November 21. There will be a total of five hearings this week, taking place in both the morning and the afternoon.
Investigators for the House of Representatives are looking into whether Trump abused his public office for private gain, specifically in his dealings with Ukraine. From attempting to pressure the Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky into investigating former Vice President Joe Biden for corruption and asking Zelensky to investigate the conspiracy theory that it was Ukraine than interfered in the 2016 election — on behalf of Hillary Clinton’s campaign — to White House officials concealing records of phone correspondence on July 25 between Trump and Zelensky, a number of government officials already testified about these impeachable offenses to Congress behind closed doors.

Updated with schedules for Week 2 hearings: The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence will continue public hearings in the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump for a second week beginning Tuesday. Last week’s three witnesses marked the first such hearings to take place since President Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 and only the fourth time against a sitting president in U.S. history.
The House of Representatives is probing charges that Trump attempted to coerce Ukraine, a foreign government, to launch an investigation of political rival Joe Biden and his son. The hearings could wrap before the end of the year.
Like last week, cable networks are planning full-court coverage for scheduled hearings this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (see the breakdown below). Most broadcast networks plan to break in to regularly scheduled programming, while offering uninterrupted coverage via their digital outlets.
Deadline will also live-stream all the hearings this week.

Michael Avenatti found “nothing funny” about this weekend’s Saturday Night Live cold open that turned the House impeachment hearings into a soap opera — and included an appearance by Pete Davidson as the attorney.
In what appeared to be an imitation of President Trump’s Twitter style, Avenatti offered a sarcastic review panning the SNL sketch.
“Nothing funny about tired Saturday Night Live on Fake News NBC!” the embattled Trump foe jokingly tweeted Saturday night. “Question is, how does that total loser Pete Davidson save his dying mediocre career by playing me and get away with these total Democratic hit jobs without retribution? This is the real quid pro quo. Investigate!!!”

Given the propensity of the “SNL” writing staff to use the cold open sketch to lampoon the political happenings of the week, there was really just only one realistic choice for that treatment this week: Donald Trump’s congressional impeachment hearings. And boy was this one quite a doozy.
The sketch took the hearings and, uh, very loosely adapted them into a “Days of Our Lives” parody, dubbed “Days of Our Impeachment.” The opening title crawl for the parody declared that the show was doing this for the sake of those in the media who were dragged this week for having complained that the hearings “lacked pizzazz” or whatever.
The cold open brought out what felt like the entire “SNL” cast, with a bonus in the form of Jon Hamm making a surprise appearance as ambassador Bill Taylor.

Because the impeachment inquiry against President Trump thus far is “lacking in pizzazz” (as one NBC News wonk put it), “dull,” and “is not The Masked Singer,” Saturday Night Live aimed to up the drama in soapy style this weekend.

For anyone who thought this week’s House impeachment hearings were “boring” — as some Republicans and Trump allies complained — Saturday Night Live offered a solution. Up the “pizzazz” by turning the hearings into a soap opera.
The NBC sketch comedy series returned from a brief break this weekend and enlisted Mad Men alum Jon Hamm as former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, Bill Taylor.
Borrowing from daytime drama Days of Our Lives — which just released its entire cast from their contracts — SNL recast all the key players and renamed the hearings “Days of Our Impeachment.”
Asked what he was doing there, Hamm’s Taylor responded, “Unlike other people in the Trump administration, I show up.”
He then made a startling announcement.
“I have a bombshell revelation. There was a second phone call!” Hamm said as dramatic music rose to a crescendo.

“Saturday Night Live” kicked off its Nov. 16 episode with a take on the biggest news story of the previous week (and foreseeable future): the impeachment hearings.
But another big story of the week, especially in Hollywood, was how NBC’s last remaining daytime drama, “Days of our Lives,” had let its actors out of their contract and would be going on an indefinite hiatus. “Saturday Night Live” managed to bring these two entertainment behemoths together in a cold open sketch entitled “Days of our Impeachment.”
In order to highlight how truly scandalous the testimony has been, the tagline for this sketch was “…where the only thing at stake is democracy.”

The first day of public impeachment hearings reinforced what the previous month of closed-door depositions all but confirmed: that President Trump attempted to extort Ukraine into interfering in the 2020 election. Witnesses George Kent, the deputy assistant secretary of state, and Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, laid out the case in exacting detail, while also revealing additional damning information, including that Trump was more concerned with Ukraine investigating Biden than the 2016 election.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway objected to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer as he concluded an interview by showing an MSNBC clip of her husband, George Conway, offering a scathing critique of President Donald Trump. Watch their exchange above.
Kellyanne Conway is one of the president’s most visible defenders; her husband is one of his most prolific conservative critics, particularly on social media.
But they have declined to talk about their personal lives, and she has objected strenuously when it has been raised in interviews, and she did so again with Blitzer.
Near the end of an interview on Thursday, Blitzer said that he wanted to bring up a “sensitive” topic but added: “I don’t want to talk about your marriage. I know there are issues there.”
Conway replied, “What did you just say? Why did you say that?”

Late-night hosts from Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers to Trevor Noah and Samantha Bee gleefully dissected the first day of public hearings in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump on their respective shows Wednesday night.
On The Late Show, Colbert called the hearings “the biggest ratings hit for C-span 3 since Drunk History starring Brett Kavanaugh,” and focused on the bombshell testimony from U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Bill Taylor. Washington — There were no gut punches at House Intelligence Committee’s first public hearing of impeachment inquiry into President Trump’s effort to pressure Ukraine to investigate the Bidens and a right-wing conspiracy theory about the 2016 election. But that doesn’t mean the hearing, the first of several, was a dud.
Quite the contrary. Witnesses George Kent, a State Department deputy assistant secretary overseeing European and Eurasian affairs, and Bill Taylor, the acting U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, affirmed many details of what we know about the months-long push by Rudy Giuliani...

House Democrats’ impeachment case hinges on whether the Trump administration pursued a quid pro quo with Ukraine, withholding military aid and a White House invitation in order to extort new President Volodymyr Zelensky into investigating Joe Biden and the 2016 election.
If President Trump did engage in such a quid pro quo, it would amount to precisely the type of abuse of power the Founding Fathers had in mind when they wrote the impeachment clause into the Constitution. But after a month of damning testimony from an array of witnesses with...

The impeachment inquiry launched last month by Democrats in the House of Representatives has already turned up a trove of evidence suggesting the Trump administration offered a quid pro quo to Ukraine. No witness laid it out with more clarity than U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor did last week. In a gasp-inducing 15-page opening statement, Taylor cited several interactions that indicated U.S. military aid for Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky’s invitation to the White House were both conditional on his administration launching investigations into both the 2016 election and the Biden family.

On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver dove right into the “damning revelations” Donald Trump is facing in the continuing saga of “Stupid Watergate II”, Rudy Giuliani’s butt-dialing habits as well as Boris Johnson and the looming Brexit deadline.
This week, former United States ambassador to Ukraine and career diplomat Bill Taylor connected Trump to the heart of the impeachment inquiry which caused plenty of gasps and sighs in Congress. Oliver said that this is the most disturbing day in Congress since Orrin Hatch got bangs.
He pointed out, “The information emerging in the Ukraine probe does not look good for the White House which is perhaps why Trump supporters spent the week attacking the impeachment process itself. Some House Republicans even staged an invasion of a closed-door hearing claiming they been shut out, a claim slightly undercut by the fact that 47 Republicans — about a quarter of those in the...

The visuals on news channels were of about two dozen members of Congress walking into a nondescript room. In fact, it was part of an unusual House Republican protest, an orchestrated effort to make the case that the Democratic-led impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump is unfair.
Led by Rep. Steve Scalise (R-la), the House majority whip, the group first spoke to reporters at the base of a set of spiral stairs at the Capitol Visitor Center that is near a secure room — known as an “Scif” — where the impeachment inquiry is taking place.
Then they paraded into the room, where Deputy Defense Secretary Laura Cooper was scheduled to testify. Some of the members had their personal electronic devices as they entered, even though they are prohibited, according to one Democratic member who was in the room. The hearing was halted, but some of the Gop members continued to...

The way Stephen Colbert sees things, today was a game changer in the House impeachment inquiry.
The CBS Late Show host noted that Bill Taylor, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, testified on Capitol Hill and it was bad, very bad.
“We just learned this afternoon, he’s just awful,” Colbert said about Trump as he introduced Tuesday night’s edition of the segment “Don and the Giant Impeach.”
“Today we got a firsthand witness to Trump going Ukraine in the membrane,” the comedian said in a nod to the Cypress Hill song “Insane in the Brain.”

Audible gasps are said to have rippled across the room as Bill Taylor, the United States’ top diplomat in Ukraine, delivered a 15-page opening statement to House impeachment investigators on Tuesday. Taylor described in detail, with the help of contemporaneous notes, extensive efforts to leverage hundreds of millions of dollars of foreign assistance and a White House meeting in exchange for investigations into a 2020 rival and a debunked theory about 2016 election interference.
He also illustrated the stakes of Trump’s capricious decision to withhold security assistance, recounting a visit to northern Donbas,...

The trio of committees leading the House’s impeachment inquiry has unleashed a torrent of requests for documents and depositions from a cast of characters in the poorly scripted political thriller in which we are living. Among them are a pair of shady Soviet-born South Florida businessmen, several frustrated career civil servants, and the once beloved ex-mayor of New York City. Here’s who has been called, how they’ve responded and why:

Reporters on Capitol Hill were staked out on Tuesday to capture a key witness arriving to provide behind-closed-doors testimony to Congress. Instead, about an hour before Gordon Sondland, the ambassador to the European Union, was to start, his lawyer announced that he would not show.
News networks quickly focused on the increasing possibility that this could trigger an additional article of impeachment against President Donald Trump, this time for obstruction.
Appearing at the Capitol before cameras on Tuesday morning, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-ca) didn’t go as far, but confirmed that it may only add to their case.
“The failure to produce this witness, the failure to produce these documents, we consider yet additional strong evidence of obstruction of the Constitutional functions of Congress,” he said. He revealed that also being withheld were some of Sondland’s text messages on one of his personal devices.

On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver continued to take us on this journey of what he named last week: “Stupid Watergate II: The Stupidest Watergate”. As Oliver updated us with this week’s installment of Donald Trump’s saga surrounding his Ukraine scandal and the impeachment inquiry against him he said of this sequel: it is “something that features everything that is bad about the original while still somehow managing to be worse.” He added, “It’s basically The Diet Mountain Dew of political scandals.”
This week Trump tried to divert the narrative of his allegations and shed lights on the supposed conspiracies around the Biden family. While doing so, he hit some roadblocks.
On Twitter, Trump used a Nickelback video to slam the Biden family only to have it removed by Twitter after the band complained of a copyright violation.
