Vintage martial arts film fans rejoice as the 70s classic, The Shaolin Plot, is set for a 2K restoration release on Blu-ray. The Mvd Entertainment Group has just released a trailer for Arrow Video’s new physical copy release of the Sammo Hung film. The Shaolin Plot comes from director Huang Feng (director of Lady Whirlwind & When Taekwando Strikes), the father of modern Kung Fu films and a mentor to John Woo (Face/Off) and Stanley Tong (Rumble in the Bronx). The cast features Sammo Hung, James Tien and Cassanova Wong.
The release details read,
“In 1977, fight choreographer Sammo Hung made one last film under his mentor, director Huang Feng before graduating to the director’s chair himself with The Iron-Fisted Monk. That film was the rarely-seen martial arts ensemble thriller The Shaolin Plot, which sees the pair reunite with Hong Kong heavy Chan Sing (New Fist of Fury). Prince...

In the 1970s, the martial-arts-genre lived through one of its most interesting periods, with many directors and therefore features competing for an audience who was eager for stories of fighting Shaolin monks or rebellious students facing a seemingly unbeatable power structure. Among the many names associated with the genre, Huang Feng was one of many directors who delivered what the audience (and therefore the producers) wanted, with his 1977 feature “The Shaolin Plot” arguably being his most notable effort. It is an impressive movie including some great set pieces and fight sequences, while also featuring actors such as Chen Hsieng, James Tien and Sammo Hung, names which have defined the martial-arts-genre during this period.

Following his major breakthrough in “Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow” and the success of “Drunken Master”, Jackie Chan seized the opportunity to finally be able to take over directing duties for a project. Apart from his experience as an actor, his collaboration with director Yuen Woo-ping had given him complete freedom over his stunts, resulting in the blend of martial arts and comedy which would become his trademark as a performer to this day. Thus, in a year which also saw him star in such features like “Dragon Fist” and “Master with Cracked Fingers”, Jackie Chan directed “The Fearless Hyena”, which he also wrote, continuing his ongoing journey of becoming one of the most beloved martial arts stars of his generation.

The success of “The Big Boss” in 1971 not only marked a decisive moment in the career of Bruce Lee and its director Lo Wei, it also ended a long period of uncertainty for the actor who was not sure whether he had any kind of future in the film industry. Even though the production itself was defined by a few bumps on the road, for example, when Lee cut his hand badly on the set or Lo Wei claiming he had to teach Bruce Lee, who was a mere “streetfighter” according to his version, to fight in front of the camera (a rather dubious claim). Nevertheless, the film proved to be a commercial success in Lee’ home country of Hong Kong and would later continue to be released overseas where it gained its star the kind of status as an actor he had hoped for when he had gone to Hollywood.

During the heyday of the 1980s, Golden Harvest Studios sought to tackle the void left in the scene with the lowered priority kung-fu flicks, from The Shaw Brothers. They quickly established themselves as major players with a series of female-driven films that made stars of a crop of explosive talent, ranging from Yukari Oshima to Cynthia Khan, Moon Lee and the stars of the film that kickstarted the genre, Cynthia Rothrock and Michelle Yeoh.

Before inventing the “Heroic Bloodshed” genre in the 80’s, with films that shaped action cinema for decades, like “A Better Tomorrow” and “The Killer”, John Woo was directing martial-arts films for the two biggest studios in Hong Kong, Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest, under the guidance of the great Chang Cheh. Although traditionally shot, “The Hand of Death” manages to highlight the fact that Woo was destined for greater things, particularly due to the way the action was shot. Furthermore, the film features performances from Sammo Hung (who was also the stunt coordinator), Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao on a minor role. Let us take things from the beginning, though.
The story revolves around Yun Fei, the best student of a Shaolin master, who is tasked with taking down Shih Shao-Feng, a Manchurian warlord who is set on eradicating the Shaolin from China. Before dealing with his arch enemy however,...

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you for taking time to have a look at my 100 Great Kung Fu movie list and feel free to add any movies in the comment box if they don’t make my list (I have probably forgotten many movies).

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

When it comes to the best kung fu movies ever made, The Prodigal Son has certainly got to be up there with the very best. This movie has everything, great fight scenes, great characters, great comedy and top notch choreography. This movie is regarded as one of Sammo’s best and i would have to agree. He as made many kung fu classics, but this as always remained one of my favorites in the genre.
Plot
Leung Jan (Yuen Biao) is a young man in a wealthy family living in Foshan in the mid-19th century. He is a martial artist trained by two instructors in his father’s employ.

I thought it was about time i did a post on the great vampire buster of all time, yes you got it, lam Ching Ying. This will be listing all the movies and tv series where Lam Ching Ying either stars in or takes on the hopping vampires and evil spirits.
His roles in the Mr.Vampire movies show his skills as an actor, with great comic timing which goes well with his serious acting side, which we normally get to see on screen. This role would make him, not just a big star in Asia but also worldwide as the master of Vampire killers.
Other great movies which he starred in (But not in a vampire movie) were the likes of The Prodigal Son, School On Fire, Eastern Condors, The Magnificent Butcher and Painted Faces.
I have been a big fan of these movies since i first watched Mr.

No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti (I Can't Live Without You) is an odd little film. Its one major weakness is it hardly seems to be about anything. While it tells the story of an itinerant Kaohsiung labourer who struggles to keep custody of his daughter in the face of bureaucratic indifference, it's not about one man against the world, and it neither paints its lead as underdog white knight nor its nominal villains as cruel or heartless.
At the same time, thanks in large part to this refusal to sully its dreamy, meditative ambience with any kind of reductive message - not to mention a stunning performance from Chen Wen-Pin and some truly wonderful cinematography - Taiwanese director Leon Dai's second film (after 20-Something Taipei) proves one of the best films out of the country in years.
