Will Smith is indeed the jack of all trades in the entertainment industry. A music artist, a TV icon, a visionary film producer, and an Oscar-winning actor, he has done it all. The Men in Black actor’s career started back in the mid-1980s when he became part of a hip-hop duo with DJ Jazzy Jeff. However, his popularity skyrocketed when he was featured in the popular ’90s sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

The show opened Smith’s door to stardom as he went on to embrace a wide variety of roles and starred in critically acclaimed dramas like The Pursuit of Happyness, Six Degrees of Separation, Ali, and many more. However, Will Smith threw all his fame and stardom away when he slapped Chris Rock, the presenter of the Best Documentary feature at 94th Academy Awards back in 2022, eventually derailing his career.

New Line Cinema teamed up with the rock band Dokken when they needed a song and music video to help promote their 1987 film A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, but when the time came to make another Elm Street sequel the following the year, they decided to switch musical genres and find a rapper they could work with on a song for the soundtrack of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. According to the recently published book Maverick Movies: New Line Cinema and the Transformation of American Film by Daniel Herbert (pick up a copy Here), New Line wanted a rap song for Elm Street 4 because the company “understood that 40 percent of the Nightmare series audience was Black.” The rap song that ended up on the soundtrack was The Fat Boys’ “Are You Ready for Freddy?”, which also got a music video that featured Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger…...

Jay-Z called out the Grammys for its voting habits during his 2024 Grammy Awards speech, defending his wife, Beyoncé, in the process when calling out her four Album of the Year snubs. With Beyoncé watching in the audience and their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, on stage with him, Jay-Z accepted the second annual Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. He reflected on the progress Black artists have made in the industry over the decades in terms of accolades, as well as speaking on the boycotts some artists have staged in protest of the Grammys’ lack of inclusivity, like when Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff boycotted the award show after winning the first rap Grammy in 1989. The duo refused to attend the ceremony when they learned the new Best Rap Performance category wouldn’t be televised. Jay-Z joked that he once boycotted the ceremony himself but still watched the show from home.

Jay-Z was honored with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the Grammy Awards and took shots at the organization for snubbing Beyoncé and keeping her from taking the Album of the Year award.
The multi-hyphenate media mogul had Beyoncé cheering him on, and he brought his daughter, Grammy Award winner Blue Ivy Carter, to the stage to accept the trophy.
As Jay-Z took the stage, he started off by saying he used the gramophone as a sippy cup for Blue Ivy and reminded everyone she is grown up now and has her own trophies now.

Will Smith's movie and TV songs, such as those from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "Men in Black," have had a lasting impact on popular culture. Some of Smith's movie and TV songs, like the end-credits remix of "Friend Like Me" in "Aladdin," didn't resonate as well with audiences, possibly due to the lack of a music video. Smith's song "Wild Wild West" from the film of the same name was a commercial success despite the film's failure, showcasing the power of music videos in popular culture.
Will Smith's music and acting career often joined together, with several of his most popular songs having been written specifically for a film or TV series he starred in. This added an extra layer of interest to these projects since audiences were given a sort of souvenir to remember Smith's role by. Years later, songs from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,...

Parents just don’t understand, and they haven’t been alone in trying to make sense of Will Smith’s angry assault on Chris Rock a year and a half ago at the Oscars. Jada Pinkett Smith and the late Tupac Shakur's were-they-weren't-they relationship is one that still intrigues fans nearly three decades after his tragic death. On Sept. 20, a week after the 27th anniversary of the rapper's death, Pinkett Smith took a trip down memory lane and posted an old clip of the two on Instagram ironically rapping along to her estranged husband Will Smith's classic '80s hit "Parents Just Don't Understand."
"Not in a million years would I have dreamed that the Fresh Prince and I would become, um, very acquainted," she captioned the video, referring to her husband's rap name. A major update in the Tupac Shakur murder case has an old friend of his speaking out.
Back in high school, Shakur happened to be friends with Jada Pinkett Smith, and the two future-celebrities would go on to respectively find fame as a rapper and actor. Their friendship had also been portrayed in the 2017 biopic All Eyez on Me, with Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Shakur and Kat Graham as Pinkett Smith. It all came to an end in 1996 when Shakur was gunned down in Las Vegas, the target of a drive-by shooting that had since been unsolved.

Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed her thoughts on the long-awaited arrest of a suspect in the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur.
Pinkett Smith and Shakur met at the Baltimore School for the Arts in Maryland in the late 1980s and became close friends.
“Now I hope we can get some answers and have some closure. R.I.P. Pac,” Pinkett Smith wrote on her Instagram story, accompanied by a white dove emoji.
Shakur died on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas in a drive-by shooting at the age of 25.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis was indicted Friday on the charge of open murder with the use of a deadly weapon along with a gang enhancement.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc Digiacomo said a grand jury had been seated in the case for “several months.” The district attorney described Davis as the “on-ground, on-site commander” who “ordered the death” of Shakur.

Editors’ Note: This interview is the first in a series commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop on August 11
“I mean, there were people who used to look at us at that time and say, ‘Where is the band?’” recalls LL Cool J of hip-hop’s early years and the reaction audiences would have.
As the genre hits its 50th birthday on August 11, no one is asking where the band is anymore. The culture that has emerged out of what Kool Herc was doing that night in 1973 in the rec room of 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the West Bronx is the most popular musical genre on the planet.
One of the first mainstream stars of hip-hop, LL Cool J himself has come a long way from dropping his “I Need a Beat” single back in 1984. A multi-Grammy winner, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and the first rapper to receive a Kennedy Center Honor,...

Allen Iverson is one of the NBA’s most revered figures from the early-to-mid 2000s, thanks partly to his miraculous run to the NBA Finals with his Philadelphia 76ers back in 2001. Unfortunately for Iverson, his sheer talent was not enough to overcome Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, and the Los Angeles Lakers. Still, the ride was one of the most memorable championship pursuits in modern history. NBA TV will premiere a new documentary on that Sixers team titled “Everything But the Chip: the 2001 76ers” on Wednesday, May 31 at 8 p.m. Et. You can watch NBA TV with a subscription to Sling TV. Will Smith once shared some strong opinions about the rap community that some artists like Eminem took slight issue with. It turns out Dr. Dre may have also had a problem with Smith’s comments as well.
So when the opportunity presented itself for Dre to poke some fun at the blockbuster superstar, Dre apparently couldn’t resist.

Before he was one of the world’s biggest superstars, Smith was first introduced to mainstream audiences as rapper Fresh Prince. Him and his partner in rap DJ Jazzy Jeff would produce several hit records that cemented their legacy in the genre. But most of Smith’s music intentionally veered towards lighthearted content that helped separate him from other hip hop acts.

American actor and rapper Will Smith is basically a household name worldwide. The star has bagged an array of awards in his day, and as of 2023, his films have grossed over $9.3 billion globally. Before he reached such great heights, the star was the Mc of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. This little venture was a collaboration between him and his childhood friend Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes, a turntablist and producer. However, his first major role came in 1993 in the movie Six Degrees of Separation. Another game-changer for him was the 1995...

Where was Tom Cruise?
That was David Letterman’s burning question for Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel when he made an appearance on last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!
And the former Late Night host wasn’t buying the official excuse.
“We don’t know where Tom Cruise was,” Kimmel said in response to Letterman’s query. “We heard production issues.”
Said Letterman, “What does that mean? That’s nonsense.”
Despite six Oscar nominations for Maverick, Cruise did not attend Sunday’s awards ceremony, begging off due to scheduling conflicts. His absence soon gave rise to rumors that he feared Scientology jokes and/or running into ex-wife Nicole Kidman. (He needn’t have worried about the former – Kimmel’s only reference was a tame reference to a shirtless Cruise being “L. Ron Hubba Hubba”).
Kimmel sided with Letterman on the Risky Business actor’s excuse. “It’s very non-specific,...

Eagle-eyed Banshees of Inisherin fans might have wondered if the donkey Jimmy Kimmel brought onstage during the 2023 Oscars was indeed Jenny, the miniature donkey, from the Academy Award-nominated Searchlight film.
While a Searchlight source confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter Sunday night that the animal was not the fan-favorite creature from the Banshees of Inisherin, the identity of Kimmel’s emotional support animal initially remained unknown.
On Monday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host confirmed that the animal “wasn’t Jenny.”
“It wasn’t even a female donkey,” he added. “The donkey’s name is Dominic. It was a male donkey.”
Beyond that, Kimmel revealed that his animal wasn’t even from Ireland, where Banshees was filmed and Jenny is said to be spending her early retirement. Instead, he was a local donkey.
“We didn’t think it was a good idea to fly a donkey over from Ireland, so we hired an L.

The rumors are true: Jenny the Donkey, beloved mascot of “The Banshees of Inisherin,” did not attend the 95th Academy Awards, host Jimmy Kimmel admitted on Monday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
One of the more memorable bits of Sunday’s ceremony featured the miniature donkey wearing a glittery gold “emotional support” sash. Kimmel led her onto the stage and pointed out costars like Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in the audience before ushering her off to catch a flight on “Spirit Airlines.”
But it didn’t take long for the internet to realize she was not the real deal.

It’s been said that revenge is a dish best served cold, and that was proven in Chris Rock’s latest standup comedy special for Netflix, “Selective Outrage”.
Not only did “Selective Outrage” mark Netflix’s first-ever live global special, it was also the first time that Rock has publicly weighed in on being slapped across the face by Will Smith during the 2022 Oscars, and the comedian did not hold back.
“I’m going to try to do the show without offending anyone. Because you never know who might get triggered,” Chris said early in the show (via Variety), seemingly in reference to Smith.

Later, he addressed the elephant in the room. “You know what people say, they say, ‘words hurt,’” he joked. “Anybody that say words hurt has never been punched in the face.

Warning: This post contains very strong language and racial slurs used onstage: “Anybody that says words hurt has never been punched in the face,” Chris Rock said with a well-timed figurative wink tonight right at the start of his live Netflix special Selective Outrage.
Starting off with a backstage montage of a Prince pendant-wearing Rock heading toward the stage, the special from Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre quickly launched into the comic taking pretty standard swings at the selective outrage of the woke crowd, “everybody scared and full of shit,” corporate charity, and “yoga pants politics.” Only with a swipe at “the kind of people who play Michael Jackson songs, but not R. Kelly,” did Rock venture from his Joe Rogan playlist
“Same crime — one has better songs.”

When Will Smith (in)famously won an Oscar for “King Richard,” it was a long way from the young rapper who had risen to fame as half of the hiphop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. But Smith wasn’t the first musician to also achieve film fame — or to win an Oscar for his efforts.
Over 80 years ago, Bing Crosby became the first multi-media sensation, and gained stardom across several platforms, including radio, film and TV, and also won an Oscar, for “Going My Way” in 1945. Almost a decade later, crooner Frank Sinatra rejuvenated his declining career with a Best Supporting Actor win for “From Here to Eternity” in 1954. These men, along with Harry Belafonte and Dean Martin, proved that singers could find equal success as actors — and in the ensuing decades, many more have found second careers on film.

Far from being just another '90s sitcom, "The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air" not only dealt with serious themes, it helped take hip-hop culture mainstream. Its enduring appeal also led to the recent Peacock remake "Bel-Air" and an HBO reunion, proving it was much more than your average family show.
"The Fresh Prince" also catapulted Will Smith to heights he never reached as part of his hip-hop duo, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Recent Oscar troubles aside, since starring in the show, Smith has conquered the entertainment industry, becoming one of the biggest leading men in the world and enjoying a successful music career. It seems strange, then, to think of him being completely down and out prior to "The Fresh Prince," but back in the late-'80s that's exactly what happened.

Will Smith may well have conquered the globe (or at least he had before the 2022 Oscars debacle). But no matter how many films he stars in, how much critical acclaim he garners, or how much money the man makes, he's always struggled to be respected in the hip-hop world. Try as he might, the West Philadelphia native cannot escape the "corny" label, and as HipHopMadness' video "Why Hip-Hop Doesn't Respect Will Smith" posits, Smith is consistently overlooked when it comes to lists of the top MCs.
Some of that had to do with his decision not to curse in his raps, but there's more to it than that. In his memoir "Will," Smith claimed his "middle-class upbringing contributed to the constant criticism" and addressed the struggle to gain legitimacy in hip-hop (via Insider):
"My story was very different from the ones being told by the young Black men who...

Jay-Z is widely regarded as a hip-hop legend thanks to his years in the music industry and undeniable talent for rapping. He’s continued to remain a high-profile figure thanks to his music career as well as his marriage to Beyoncé. But despite being in the public eye, Jay-Z isn’t necessarily a fan of being on camera all the time.

Jay-Z first started rapping in the mid-1990s in the wake of his fellow Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn native The Notorious B.I.G. The two even collaborated together on the songs “Brooklyn’s Finest” and “I Love the Dough.”
Jay-Z released his debut album Reasonable Doubt in 1996. He followed it up in the following years with In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life, Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter, The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, and his seminal 2001 album The Blueprint.

The 2023 Grammy Awards featured a celebration of hip-hop ahead of the genre’s 50th birthday in 2023. Rappers young and old came together to perform hit hip-hop songs and get the crowd at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena (and the millions watching at home) on their feet. One former rapper who was slated to be a part of the tribute but was notably absent was Grammy Award winner Will Smith.

Hip-hop historians trace the birth of hip-hop to a house party in the Bronx on Aug. 11, 1973. Several tributes and performances have taken place in the lead-up to the big date, including the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show, which was an homage to the genre with some of its biggest players taking the stage together: Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar,...

On Sunday night at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, hip-hop pioneer Dr. Dre was honored with an award that will newly bear his name – the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. The honor is a project of the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective, which debuted the Global Impact Award last year, simply as such. The Collective was established after the mass protests of 2020, fueled by the murder of George Floyd and the killing of Breonna Taylor by police. And for some, Dre’s moniker upon this award also fuels indignance...
