(Nb – Any outlet that didn’t write this headline back in October 2023, when it was announced that Ghosts and Horrible Histories star Mathew Baynton was to make his Royal Shakespeare Company debut in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is either a coward or worse – a grown-up.)
The notices are in! Press night for Eleanor Rhode’s RSC revival of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been and gone, and the reviews are highly favourable. Running from January 30 until March 30 at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the production is picking up more stars than Mario on a caffeine rush. It’s a hit.
And the loudest applause? That goes to Mat Baynton’s Bottom.

A three hour documentary about iconic comedian Ken Dodd will premiere in June, and here are the details.
There are few comics, before him or since, who were as hardworking as Ken Dodd. Known for the epic length of his performances, he performed shows that began at 7.30, wouldn’t have an interval until 10.30, with gigs regularly finishing in the small hours.
Dodd passed away in 2018 at the age of 90, and left a legacy of laughter in a career that began in the 1940s.
Ken Dodd is now set to be the subject of new documentary The Real Ken Dodd: The Man I Loved. As a tribute to Dodd’s shows, the film is a whopping three hours long.
The film, narrated by the irrepressible Miriam Margoyles, also features tributes from the comedy community, including Lee Mack, Harry Hill, Johnny Vegas, Tim Vine, Les Dennis, Ricky Tomlinson, Stephen K Amos, Shaparak Khorsandi and the late,...

Four years ago, it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production when it was originally supposed to because of the pandemic shutdown… but after making his latest film Meg 2: The Trench (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with the filmmaker Here), Wheatley has circled back around to Generation Z and is now knee-deep into filming it! To celebrate the fact that Generation Z is finally being made, Channel 4 has unveiled a batch of first look images, and you can check those out at the bottom of this article.

Kill List, Free Fire, and High-Rise director Ben Wheatley announced plans for the Brexit zombie series “Generation Z” for UK’s Channel 4 back in 2019. UK broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled first look images at the six-part series, along with its cast.
Channel 4 describes the series as a “coming-of-age parable for our very strange times – cut with a heavy dose of outlandish gore.” Check out the first look images below.
The plot for the six-part series: “In a small British town, tensions come to a head when a mysterious military convoy crashes outside the Sunnywise Retirement Home. The vehicles were carrying a toxic substance, which, as a result of the crash, leaks into the local environment and infects the residents of the retirement community. The symptoms of this infection quickly manifest – an overwhelming appetite for raw flesh. They’re old, they’re angry and they’re on the rampage. As the...

Ben Wheatley’s zombie series Generation Z is building its bite.
UK broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled a first look at the six-part series, which is currently being filmed in Wales by The Forge, the outfit that produced Help and Roadkill.
Generation Z, Wheatley’s first TV series, boasts a cast including Robert Lindsay (Wimbledon), Sue Johnston (Downton Abbey), and Anita Dobson (Call The Midwife).
The series centers on the fictional town of Dambury, where a chemical leak outside a care home starts an apocalypse led by old-aged pensioners hungry for human flesh.
A group of teenagers are caught up in the virus when one of the gang’s grandmothers becomes infected and attacks her.
Here’s the logline: “Generation Z is about intergenerational justice and community breakdown that boldly satirizes a world where truth is stranger than fiction, exploring not just the political fault lines in our society but...

What’s your favourite Taskmaster task? Did it result in a delicious failure or a triumphant win? Was it a crafty solution from a cunning mind, or a bonkers, impractical response that could only have come from the brain of John Kearns?
We asked our writers to nominate their favourites, in order (and not including Prize Tasks because that’s already been covered here), and collated the results into the Top 50 below. With 15 series proper, two Champion of Champions specials, and multiple New Year’s Treat episodes, there were approximately 89,000 tasks to choose from, hence a nice, neat 50.
If you’re at all concerned about the scientific robustness of our approach, rest assured that Google Sheets formulas were used in the creation of this list, resulting in an entirely accurate ranking order that cannot be questioned. Well alright, you can question it.
So, what are the best Taskmaster tasks of all time?...

Imagine being someone who’s never seen Taskmaster. A virgin to joy. Someone whose eyes have never before drunk in the sight of a banana-Noel Fielding hiding in a fruit bowl, of Joe Wilkinson presenting the mayor of Chesham with 42 Calippo ice lollies, or of Charlotte Ritchie stumbling around a golf course blindfolded like an adorable Minion. What promise awaits! The prize tasks, the flashes of creative genius, the glorious failures… Alex Horne’s challenge-based comedy panel show is one of the most reliably entertaining TV programmes ever made.

Young Arthur – bullied at school and struggling with his dad Johnny Vegas – seeks sanctuary at his local pool
Sheffield-based YouTuber Luke Cutforth here ventures into – that dread phrase – long-form content, with a thin slip of YA fantasy (drawn from a novel by Caroline Smailes) about a humiliated schoolboy retrieved from the brink of self-sacrifice. Cutforth clearly knows his way around a camera, which isn’t always the case at the industry’s lower-budget end; with cinematographer Josh Winslade, he makes atmospheric use of his primary location, Manchester’s Victoria Baths, recast as an abandoned spa. Yet the pacing proves sluggish, and the adaptation broadly unpersuasive: a fifth-former’s creative writing assignment, with clunky exposition and potential elements of autobiography that elicit sporadic cringes.

Exclusive: UK network ITV has ordered a second series of competition format Cooking With the Stars, Deadline hears.
The six-part show from ITV Studios-backed South Shore, which is co-financed by Marks & Spencer in an ad-funded arrangement, is hosted by Emma Willis and Tom Allen and sees celebrities compete against each other in weekly challenges, with one eliminated per episode.
The first season, which aired over the summer, was won by McFly singer Harry Judd, who beat Denise van Outen in the final. Others to feature included Johnny Vegas, Aj Odudu and Griff Rhys Jones.
Celebrities are unconfirmed for season two.
The re-commission represents something of a gamble for ITV as the show pulled in below-par ratings, launching with 2M overnight and dipping below 1M for some of the later installments.
Cooking With the Stars has, however, bested ITVs previous cooking format, 2015’s BBQ Champ, which only ran for one series.

Contains spoilers for the Taskmaster series 11 finale
The suit. The ‘tache. The smile. The preternatural speed with which he’s able to snatch a marshmallow from an opponent using a pair of kitchen tongs. There’s a great deal to admire about Taskmaster series 11 contestant Mike Wozniak, so admire him we will. Right here. Starting now. Tick tock: it’s Wozniak o’clock.
Who is Mike Wozniak?
He’s an absolute bloody milk guzzler, that’s who.
Like Harry Hill, Graham Chapman, Graeme Garden and Paul Sinha before him, Mike Wozniak trained and worked as a doctor before becoming a stand-up. Healthcare’s loss was comedy’s gain. His 2013 Edinburgh Fringe show, in which Wozniak played an outmoded light entertainer, received a Best Comedy Show nomination.

There’s a pointed takedown of very-online living fighting to emerge from the many zany, bloody distractions of “Paul Dood’s Deadly Lunch Break,” though even if it succeeded, it probably wouldn’t be all that fresh. Wringing bleak comedy from the psychological collapse of a naive middle-aged man chasing talent-show glory, this uneven sophomore feature from director Nick Gillespie most resembles a grindhouse marriage of “Joker” and “Ingrid Goes West,” with its makeup left to run in a gray British drizzle. The celebrity-forging cycle of reality TV and the false validation of social media likes aren’t exactly hard targets, so Gillespie’s film can’t help but hit them squarely here and there. Yet it’s hard to escape the queasy sense that such points are also being scored at the expense of a vulnerable protagonist’s mental frailty, at which stage the laughs rather dry up.

2020 in British TV comedy brought us Maisie Williams as a kickass survivalist in a pickle, and a new parenting comedy from the hugely talented Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison starring Martin Freeman.
To add to that, there was also a fresh batch of comedians playing exaggerated versions of themselves in self-penned sitcoms, including Katherine Ryan, Mae Martin, Sara Pascoe, Kayleigh Llewellyn, Lucy Beaumont and Jon Richardson.
Here’s the skinny on all those new shows and more. Here’s what arrived in 2019, and here are the new British TV dramas that arrived in 2020.

10 short weeks ago, none of us had seen Richard Herring feed half a watermelon to a slathering Daisy May Cooper, and frankly, we were the worse off for it. Neither had we witnessed The It Crowd’s Katherine Parkinson philosophically asking “Am I the spider?”, known how rigorously Johnny Vegas would apply himself to the task of putting the heaviest thing through a Christmas tree-bagger, or enjoyed Mawaan Rizwan thinking that if he filled an egg with helium, it would float like a happy little bee. All these, the tiny joys of a new series of Taskmaster.
Now that series 10 is over, eyes to the horizon for series 11. The new contestant line-up has been announced, along with confirmation of a second Champion of Champions mini-series featuring the winners of 6-10. First up, here’s who’ll be competing for the Taskmaster’s approval in series 11:

Remember thinking you’ve reached the end of a Christmas stocking, and then discovering an additional lump of festive fun stuffed right in the toe? Such joy. Thanks to Channel 4, that’s the case with this year’s Taskmaster, which has announced a one-off Christmas Special episode for 2020.
There’s no air date confirmed for the festive episode as yet, but seeing as the currently airing series 10 finale arrives on Thursday the 17th of December, it’ll be after that.
In 2017, the comedians-do-silly-challenges show aired a two-part Champion of Champions special at Christmastime featuring the winners of the first five series. This time, the Special will feature an all-new cast of five contestants brand new to Taskmaster.

Like that guy who didn’t sign The Beatles and those publishers who turned down the first Harry Potter book, Channel 4 must have spent some portion of the last five years kicking itself. A little kick every time Taskmaster – the comedy show it developed but then let go – was nominated for a Bafta, another little kick every time the show set a ratings record for its home on digital channel Dave, and yet another kick every time the show received a giddy press write-up.
Kick no more, Channel 4. Taskmaster is once again yours. After airing nine series and a champion-of-champions special on Dave, Alex Horne’s inventive entertainment format is now back in the C4 fold with a six series deal. And by the looks of this first official trailer, Channel 4 is leaning into its past mistake and, to use the common parlance, owning it.

Horror movie festival Grimmfest has joined forces with UK production company Greenacre Films to develop and produce a new UK-centric horror anthology TV series entitled Fear Machine, which will showcase contemporary British tales of horror which will appeal to a broad audience as well the modern horror fan.
Grimmfest director Simeon Halligan says:
Horror is more popular than ever, with plenty of Film and TV content coming from North America, but in the Sixties and Seventies, it was the UK who dominated the horror scene with companies like Hammer – we feel it’s time British horror was back in the limelight.
Greenacre Films is an independent production company founded by award-winning producers Nadine Marsh-Edwards and Amanda Jenks, who are currently working with some of the UK’s leading writing talent and they see this as an exciting partnership that will bring together the best Horror talent from the worlds of film and television.

A group of middle-aged friends gather at a remote lodge to honour a friend who recently drowned in a nearby lake. Urban legends about a masked slasher, a paranormal ghost hunt and a post-apocalyptic wasteland soon lose their fun shock value as the sextet become stuck in a true terror tale that exposes dark secrets no one could have possibly foreseen.

Point Blank
Stars: Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Marcia Gay Harden, Stuart F. Wilson, Buster Reeves, Christian Cooke, Teyonah Parris, Boris McGiver, Reggie Willis, Shanessa Sweeney, Nik Pajic, Markice Moore | Written by Adam G. Simon | Directed by Joe Lynch
Point Blank, directed by Joe Lynch, is a remake of Fred Cavayé’s À bout portant, which was originally released in 2010. The film stars two actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Frank Grillo and Anthony Mackie as Abe and Paul, respectively. Paul has to break Abe out of custody in a hospital as his brother has taken Paul’s pregnant wife hostage. What commences is an unorthodox buddy-action comedy, in what is sadly yet another dull and tedious action-adventure.
It is hard to watch Point Blank and not debate why this was made, or even distributed by Netflix. Everything from its plot, actors and actress, or even filmmaking evokes a sense of direct-to-dvd nature.

A group of middle-aged pals gather at a lodge in the woods to celebrate the life of a fallen friend in director Abigail Blackmore's debut feature, Tales From the Lodge. After the death of their beloved Gran (Stephanie Fayerman), two half-brothers, Omar (Antonio Aakeel) and Pete (Jack Carroll) set off for Blackpool in order to find Omar’s long-missing father. Omar was, as Gran points out, the result of a “youthful dalliance” between his mother and a desi man she met on a night out, and whom she never saw again. And although Gran previously said she knew little more than that, she leaves Omar a letter that tells him more of what she really knew about his father. Armed with his birth certificate, his mother’s diary, and a photograph taken on the fateful evening, and with his grandmother’s urn and his disabled brother in tow, Omar decides it’s time to finally find out who his father really is.
Director and co-writer (along with David Isaac) Jason Wingard first explored this theme in his 2014 short film Going to Mecca.

In many ways Aardman Animation and director/innovator Nick Park have done for Claymation and British stop-motion animation in the last few decades, what Ray Harryhausen did for the art as a whole in earlier eras of cinema advancement. In the history of this filmmaking technique these names are heroes and their work is timeless, cherished and true poetry in (stop)motion. From Wallace & Gromit and Creature Comforts to Chicken Run and Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, this studio’s body of work is revered and consistent. So naturally expectations are high with every new project, let alone the first feature in nearly 15 years to be directed by Nick Park. Thankfully, Early Man is another win to scratch onto the Aardman slate.
Taking their own brand of British barminess to the prehistoric world, Early Man is set at the dawn of time – just outside Manchester – with an opening sequence...

Aardman animation supremo Nick Park (Wallace and Gromit) makes a welcome return to claymation with this engaging and warm-hearted caveman comedy that’s a treat for both adults and children alike.
Set in Stone-Age England (near Manchester), Early Man centres on happy-go-lucky caveman Dug (Eddie Redmayne), whose peaceful tribe are rudely evicted from their fertile valley by snooty, French-accented Bronze Ager Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston). With the aid of his loyal wild boar Hognob (assorted grunts and snorts from Park himself), Dug succeeds in challenging Lord Nooth to a winner-takes-all football match, with the valley at stake as the prize.
