Television archaeologists take note: you don’t need to dig deep into the medium’s origins to uncover a diamond in the rough. Treasures can be found in the recent past. And one of those treasures involves the greatest fictional archaeologist of them all, Indiana Jones.
On March 4, 1992, ABC premiered the two-hour movie pilot of “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles” in its 8 p.m. slot to much fanfare. The show’s titular hero was a younger (and older) version of Harrison Ford’s blockbuster icon, who at 10, 17, and yes, 93, had his own set of primetime adventures. Since the series was the brainchild of filmmaker and franchise-builder George Lucas, outlets like USA Today, The Washington Post and The New York Times covered it extensively. Lucas wanted his “Chronicles” to do what movies couldn’t: tell one big story over 20 to 40 hours of programming. In today’s streaming landscape, that sounds perfectly conventional,...

Pop quiz, film lovers: What was the first feature-length movie based on a video game?
Conventional wisdom tells you that the answer is 1993's "Super Mario Bros.", a live-action, extremely loose (and very underrated) adaptation of the beloved Nintendo video game series about a pair of plumbers who travel to another world and rescue a princess from an evil reptile man. But conventional wisdom isn't necessarily the same thing as actual wisdom, because the real answer is more complicated.
The first feature-length film adapted from a video game was actually a tie between the anime films "Running Boy: Star Soldier's Secret" and "Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!" Both movies came out on July 20, 1986, and both films have lapsed into near total obscurity, thanks to the fact that they were barely released in the first place. It doesn't help that they have never been officially translated into English.

Whether you love or hate the idea of 80-year-old Harrison Ford donning the fedora once again, there’s still something comforting about seeing him in the hat while John Williams’ iconic “Indiana Jones Theme” plays on. Disney deployed that nostalgia with its usual precision, too, in our first teaser trailer for the newly christened Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
In the new James Mangold-directed sequel, Ford’s Dr. Henry Jones Jr. is looking grayer than he did in 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. In fact, his hair is now white. But the elegiac rendition of Williams’ Indy theme still soars as the old-timer rides a horse through the New York City subways–and it all but weeps as we have our first look at the de-aged Harrison Ford, confirming rumors that there will be flashback sequences set during World War II. Indiana is coming back for one last ride.

On Jan. 8, NATPE cancelled its Jan. 18-20 Miami in-person conference, due to skyrocketing Omicron cases. No online event was put in its place.
The show, however, has gone on.
Some sales companies have made the trip to Miami anyway. Many others, who had already shifted Miami business meetings online, will still make those calls. Spanish language entertainment business publication Produ has launched a NATPE Showcase, bowed by an Inter Medya’s presentation of Turkish novela Aziz, a 1930s-set family drama. On Monday, Globo released details of its slate of new telenovelas, led by “In Your Place,” direct by email to targeted buyers.
Over June 18-20, Variety will publish three E-Show Dailies capturing breaking news from the international TV business. Following 10 takes, based on some foreknowledge of announcements, and companies’ current sales slates of what might have been at least some trends and global TV strategies highlighted by NATPE Miami:

All the world’s a stage and that includes the Twentieth Century, a deluxe passenger train transformed into an itinerant theater thanks to the first class talent in first class, Carole Lombard and John Barrymore. The story of a has-been director conniving to get back on Broadway with the help of a former protege, Howard Hawks’ 1934 comedy is glamorous slapstick—”screwball comedy” before it had a name.

One of the fastest-expanding companies on the Spanish-language drama series scene, Btf Media, is teaming with Argentina-based author-historian Uki Goñi on one of Bft Media’s biggest titles ever, a small screen makeover of Goñi’s most celebrated work: “The Real Odessa: Smuggling the Nazis to Perón’s Argentina.”
Based on Goñi’s research and access to Argentine, Swiss, American, British, and Belgian government archives, the series will double down of how Nazis found safe haven in Argentina. That came thanks to Argentine President Juan Perón and, most shockingly, as the incipient Cold War reshaped government priorities, the collusion of both the Catholic Church and Allied intelligence agencies who provided escape routes – ratlines – and sanctuary for war criminals.
“We are extremely satisfied to announce this agreement. Uki is an extraordinary writer and his research has had wide repercussion in those countries that collaborated with Nazi criminals in their escape”, said Ivonne Vela,...

Los Cabos — Netflix is proving a boon to documentary creation in Mexico. That boon has not yet yielded a fully-fledged boom. The U.S. streaming giant has just released the first results of its documentary drive. The build in cinematic standard non-fiction works in, however, palpable, the biggest case in point to date, Diego Osorno’s milestone doc series “1994,” produced by Netflix and Vice Studios Latin America.
Osorno’s masterclass on “1994” proves one of the highlights of the 2019 Los Cabos Festival.
The rise of the documentary is also related to “superficiality” social media. Osorno said in his masterclass. “You go on Twitter” and massacre in Kenia, rebellion in Bolivia, slaughter in Chihuahua an you see 140 characters and think you’re keeping up to date with the new, but you don’t go into any event,” he said.
“People are seeking out non-fiction works and documentaries to understand what we thought...

No matter the veracity of its basic premise, “Sister Aimee” is upfront about its fictitiousness, claiming that “5½ percent is truth. The rest is imagination.” Unfortunately, the invention on display is of a helter-skelter variety, as Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann’s film so madly lurches about in search of a tone that it feels like the first draft of a gonzo faux-biopic. To be sure, there’s a method to its madcap decision to play fast and loose with the facts. But .
“Sister Aimee” is a made-up tall tale about what happened to the actual Sister Aimee Semple McPherson — a nationally famous 1920s Evangelical preacher who rocketed to stardom thanks to her canny use of radio — when, in 1926, she vanished for five weeks following a swim in Venice Beach, Calif. She’d eventually reappear in Mexico, claiming she’d been kidnapped, and inciting a media firestorm thanks to accusations that...

It’s hard to keep up with a movie that is constantly changing its story. It’s even harder when that story is stranger than fiction and may even be fiction — but about a real person. Such is the case of “Sister Aimee,” writers-directors Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann’s (“Canary”) film that scrambles together a mix of rumors and fantasies about notorious evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson. But the finished product fails to say much about these tales.
It’s worth noting that a woman who is actually able to control her narrative, even filling it with lies, without it being usurped by a man’s perspective in any era is an extraordinary feat. But that’s especially true in 1926, when we first meet Sister Aimee as she’s wrapping up yet another breathless healing service where she miraculously cures her subject while remaining stupendously dissatisfied. She’s craving something...

The legendary director Raoul Walsh hits The Big Trail one more time for a CinemaScope & stereophonic ‘big star’ cattle drive movie, dodging most cliches but taking a few squarely between the eyes. Star chemistry is what keeps them dogies movin’, with Clark Gable making it look all too easy. Frisky Jane Russell fares well, but not our favorite Robert Ryan: despite the high-profile billing, he pulls S.O.B. duty yet again. There’s no doubt about it, pilgrim … I see a whole lotta cows in this one.

The network hopes to repeat that success with the second season, which recounts the story of abstract painter Pablo Picasso. Gold Derby recently spoke with stars Antonio Banderas, Alex Rich and T.R. Knight. We also spoke with costume designer Sonu Mishra and makeup artist/hairstylist Davina Lamont, both of whom earned Emmy nominations for the show’s first season. Scroll down and click on each name below to be taken to their full interview.

“I try to always not establish a morality or judgement over them and try to play them as human beings. We all are human beings who travel through life with a backpack filled with greatness and miseries. Picasso was no different even with this genius side of his persona,” reveals Antonio Banderas about playing the good and bad sides of iconic painter Pablo Picasso. He stars in the NatGeo limited series “Genius: Picasso” and discusses the project in our exclusive webchat (watch the exclusive video above). He adds, “In his private life he had a lot of controversial situations, not only just with women which is very known, but his friends and the relationship with the world in general.”
For the NatGeo program, Banderas plays the older Spanish legend while Alex Rich portrays the famous painter as a younger man. Others in these episodes include T.R. Knight, Clemence Posey, Poppy Delevingne,...

This year Antonio Banderas could win his first Emmy for “Genius: Picasso.” He stars in the second season of NatGeo’s anthology series as famed Spanish surrealist painter Pablo Picasso. Banderas previously competed for Best Movie/Mini Actor for “And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself” in 2004. But of course, most of Banderas’ best known work has been in film, not television. In honor of his latest small-screen achievement, let’s take a look back at some of his best big-screen performances. Tour through our photo gallery above of Banderas’ 12 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
Banderas made his film debut over three decades ago in 1982, in Pedro Almodovar‘s “Labyrinth of Passion.” The actor would become a frequent leading man for the Spanish auteur, later appearing in such films as “Matador” (1986), “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” (1988), “Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!” (1990), “The Skin I Live In...

Decades before Hollywood got serious about the need for diversity, Anthony Quinn was diversity. This month marks the birthday of the Mexico-born, L.A.-raised actor who played Bedouins, Native Americans, Soviets — and even Mexicans and Americans in his 60-year career. He was the first Mexican-American to win an Oscar, for his supporting performance in “Viva Zapata!” (1952) and won another as French painter Gaugin in “Lust for Life” (1956). His two trademark performances were in “Zorba the Greek” (another Oscar nom) and as an Italian circus strongman in Fellini’s “La Strada.”
Antonio Rodolfo Oaxaca Quinn was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, on April 21, 1915, and began acting in 1936. His rise in Hollywood is especially remarkable considering the times. From 1929-36, the U.S.’ “Mexican Repatriation” program sent those of Mexican descent south of the border (even though many were U.S. citizens) out of fear they were taking jobs from whites. In...

Johnny Depp is in talks to become the latest big name to play Mexican bandit revolutionary Pancho Villa in a new movie.
The movie star is slated to lead the cast of Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica's biopic, The Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers.
The Spanish-language film will be shot partly in Mexico in 2011 and Depp's Once Upon A Time In Mexico co-star Salma Hayek is in negotiations to co-star, according to Variety.
If the film comes together, it won't be the first time Depp and Kusturica have worked together - they previously collaborated on 1993 movie Arizona Dream.
Antonio Banderas, Telly Savalas and Leo Carrillo are among the stars who have portrayed Pancho Villa in the movies.
The real revolutionary, aka Jose Doroteo Arango Arambula, played himself in silent movie mogul D.W. Griffith's The Life of General Villa in 1914.

Serbian director Emir Kusturica is negotiating to hire actor Johnny Depp to play strong-arm Mexican revolutionary 'Pancho Villa' for the Spanish-language biopic "Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers."
The film will be lensed in Mexico where Villa lived.

Hollywood star Antonio Banderas is under fire from the Mexican public for his portrayal of Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa in a new film. Audiences are not taking kindly to the idea of the stout, pistol-packing hero of the 1910-1917 revolution being played by a Spaniard for an American audience - two nationalities Villa loathed. Banderas filmed the HBO movie And Starring Pancho Villa As Himself at a time when Hollywood's treatment of history is becoming a sensitive point for Mexicans. Actress Salma Hayek recently starred as Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in a Hollywood movie filmed entirely in Mexican-accented English. Adolfo Lopez Villarreal - who founded the Francisco Villa Popular Front in Mexico City in 1988 - is one who's unhappy about the HBO film. He says, "They should have given the role to a Mexican. I like Banderas, but he's a Spaniard. I think there are Mexican actors who could do the role well." Student activist America Del Valle adds, "It's very Hollywood, to use big- name actors who have never participated in real-life political movements to depict revolutionaries. I'm sure they'll do Che (Guevara) next. It's playing marketing with the truth. I just hope they'll respect the historical reality, and not paint him all black or all white."...
