Ghost hunters will find more than they bargained for on Halloween in upcoming genre-bender The Unearthly. Per Deadline, the indie sci-fi horror comedy has found its lead in star and producer Patrick Warburton.
Josh Sternfeld (Fortress: Sniper’s Eye) is set to direct The Unearthly for Centerboro Productions, with production scheduled to begin early this year in Connecticut.
In The Unearthly, “a team of paranormal investigators live-stream a ‘Halloween Special’ ghost hunt of a notorious haunted mansion, finding the source of the evil at hand to be far more deadly than they ever could have imagined. Warburton plays Tank McCrary, an old school paranormal investigator in the style of Ed Warren and Peter James, who hosted over 20 live television specials in the ’90s before an incident ruined his career. Stubborn and egotistical, he likes to do things his way. He doesn’t trust technology, relying on his analog tape recorder,...

Patrick Wilson's many appearances in James Wan films have made the duo one of the most formidable pairings of The Conjuring Universe.
Cinephiles likely have their own exhaustive lists of favorite Hollywood pairings. These can involve inseparable co-stars like Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, or Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. Movie history also lists a long line of directors who prefer working with certain actors, like Quentin Tarantino with Zoë Bell, Martin Scorsese with Robert De Niro, or James Wan with Patrick Wilson. That last pairing is unmistakable to fans of The Conjuring Universe, and in a /Film interview, Wan admits he does enjoy working with Wilson on movie projects.

Some pretty famous actor/director pairings have defined a sizable portion of classic cinema over the years. Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro; the Coen brothers and Frances McDormand; Guillermo del Toro and Doug Jones. It's a legendary list and one that should most certainly include James Wan and Patrick Wilson. Dating back to 2010's smash hit "Insidious," the duo have worked together on six of Wan's directorial efforts (and many more that he's produced). That sixth collaboration came in "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," which is just now making its way to theaters after several long delays.
But why is it that Wan continues to cast Wilson in his films? In fairness, this is a sequel and Wilson's Orm is a big part of the story. Even so, the two clearly want to keep working with one another. /Film's own Jacob Hall recently spoke with Wan in anticipation...

Ed and Lorraine Warren were legendary paranormal investigators who formed their own society and investigated terrifying hauntings. The Warren Occult Museum houses creepy and haunted objects, including the iconic Annabelle doll and cursed samurai armor. The museum also contains vampire coffins, cursed photographs, demon masks, and other unnerving artifacts with mysterious lore attached to them.
Ed and Lorraine Warren were some of the most legendary paranormal investigators of all time, with the married couple forming their own society -- the New England Society for Psychic Research (Nespr) -- and investigating some of the most terrifying hauntings of all time, including the Amityville hauntings, the Perron family hauntings, and the Enfield poltergeist case. Famously, the case files of the Warrens also helped to inspire The Conjuring movies, bringing Ed and Lorraine’s investigations to the big screen.

Robins criticizes The Conjuring for how quickly the Warrens jump to the conclusion that a house is haunted by demons, despite other possible explanations. Other entries in The Conjuring Universe also lack realism to their paranormal events, deviating from real-life events to fit into a larger cinematic universe while sacrificing accuracy. Despite its lack of realism, The Conjuring is still highly regarded as one of the scariest demonic films of all time, and even Robins enjoys it.
Paranormal expert Danny Robins breaks down the unrealistic way in which the Warren hunt for demons in The Conjuring. Based on the real-life case of the Perron haunting in Rhode Island, the movie follows couple Ed and Lorraine Warren as they investigate the family's home. The movie is best known for starting a shared universe of horror films, some of which are entirely fictionalized while others are loosely based on real events.

Netflix originals have always been the biggest draw for the streaming juggernaut, and their true crime documentary offerings have been so popular that they've been spoofed by both "Black Mirror," and the brilliant satirical mockumentary series "American Vandal." Released just in time for the Halloween season, the latest documentary, "The Devil on Trial," has been dominating the top 10 charts across the globe. The film is the latest from Peabody Award-winning and three-time BAFTA-nominated British writer, director, and producer, Chris Holt, and tackles the first and only time demonic possession was used as a defense in an American murder trial. Taking place in 1981, the trial made headlines as the "Devil Made Me Do It" case, as 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson claimed that he was not guilty in the murder of his landlord, Alan Bono, because he was possessed at the time of the killing.

New Line’s The Nun II, one of the few bright spots at the fall box office rocked by the actors strikes, will hit Max on Oct. 27. That premiere date is after the pic’s 50-day theatrical window.
The Michael Chaves directed sequel in the Conjuring universe opened to $32.6M and through yesterday counts $84.4M at the domestic box office and over $258M worldwide. The movie ruled the top of the box office for three weekends in a row and returned Warner Bros to the post-Labor Day horror launchpad they first made rich with the 2017 feature take of Stephen King’s It.
The movie follows young Sister Irene’s (Taissa Farmiga) crusade against a sinister, evil Mother Superior spirit, aka Valak, who takes over the souls of people around her. Set in 1956 France, the pic picks up after The Nun when Maurice (Jonas Bloquet) becomes possessed.

Spanning nine films in total, “The Conjuring” franchise, including “The Nun II,” is as vast as it is complex.
The story that kicked off with supernatural investigating couple Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) has since expanded into a series of “Conjuring” movies and spinoffs, all set at different points in a timeline that begins all the way back in the 1300s. The events in the three proper “Conjuring” films actually do occur in the order they were released, but the spinoffs and prequels, including “The Nun” and the “Annabelle” films, make the timeline much more complicated.
Here’s how to watch all the “Conjuring” movies in chronological order, all the way back to the Dark Ages.
The Nun (2018): 1300s, 1952, 1971 The Nun (Warner Bros.)
While the bulk of the film about the Nun (aka Valak), who first appears in “The Conjuring 2,” is set in 1952 Romania, a...

The characters in The Conjuring franchise, including The Nun and Annabelle, are interconnected through various films, with ties to the main Conjuring movies. Valak, the demon nun, is the main antagonist in The Conjuring 2 and The Nun, and there are Easter eggs and theories that suggest a deeper connection between these two spin-off films. Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren are revealed to be part of the same bloodline, explaining why both characters are targeted by demons like Valak and Annabelle. The characters played by Taissa and Vera Farmiga are also related in the franchise.
The expansive universe within The Conjuring franchise is broad, with tons of characters that interconnect within a number of films, including making connections between movies like The Nun and Annabelle. This is typical, as all the movies tie back to one of the Conjuring films. The Curse of La Llorona had a tie-in with Father...

The biggest mystery of The Nun is the potential connection between Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren, as both characters fight the demon Valak and encounter Frenchie. The movie hints at the possibility that Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren are the same person, but there are inconsistencies regarding their timelines and roles as nuns. Alternatively, the theory suggests that Irene and Lorraine may be sisters, sharing a bloodline connected to Saint Lucy, as revealed in The Nun 2.
Perhaps the biggest mystery of The Nun is the possible connection between Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren, who is played by Vera Farmiga. Directed by Corin Hardy, The Nun is a spinoff from the Conjuring Universe, and stars Vera's younger sister Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene, a nun who is recruited to investigate a mysterious death at a remote convent in Romania. It took nearly 20 years to make "The Conjuring," a "based on a true story" film about the supposed hauntings of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. For over 14 years, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund went from studio to studio trying to make the film happen, but it wasn't until writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes updated the script and shifted the perspective from the Perron family to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was movement on the picture. The duo interviewed Lorraine Warren to ensure authenticity, and the new script sparked a massive bidding war. The Hayes brothers had cracked the code — the secret of what would become a massive franchise lay with the Warrens.

The Nun II director, Michael Chaves, connects the timeline of The Nun and The Conjuring by referencing a failed exorcism performed on Frenchie, which ultimately leads to his death. Chaves suggests that Valak's return to Frenchie's body is "open to interpretation," but points out a significant look shared between Irene and Frenchie at the end of the movie that implies a lingering spirit. The post-credit scene in The Nun II, featuring Ed Warren receiving a call from Father Gordon, suggests a deeper connection between The Conjuring and The Nun II, hinting at possible links in future movies.
According to The Nun II director Michael Chaves, one of the movie's final Frenchie scenes intentionally weaves in The Conjuring's timeline. Released in 2018, the original Nun acts as a prequel to The Conjuring and sees Father Burke (Demián Bichir), Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), and Romanian local Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet) investigate a demonic presence in an abbey.

The following contains spoilers for The Nun II, now playing in theaters.
The Conjuring has been the most successful horror franchise for over a decade, and the hits keep on coming. The Conjuring spinoff movie The Nun II is looking to be another box office slam dunk for the series, and it's also largely seen as an improvement over its predecessor. Unfortunately, it also highlights a major opportunity that the James Wan property keeps missing.
One of the most iconic horror movie monsters is the werewolf, which hasn't been seen in the Conjuring Universe. That's despite there being so many similar concepts utilized, not to mention Ed and Lorraine Warren supposedly dealing with such a beast in real-life. The Nun II also features a werewolf in all but name, but the franchise may be running out of time to use an actual howling menace.

The Nun 2 is not based on any true stories, allowing the filmmakers to create a fictional plot that enhances the scare factor and character development. While The Nun 2 is not based on true events, it does have connections to real-life demons, people, and mythological figures, adding an interesting element to the film. The paranormal world of nun demons, exorcisms, and possessions depicted in The Nun 2 is entirely fictional, but there are some realistic elements inspired by cases encountered by Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Against all odds, director James Wan's "The Conjuring" movies somehow managed to hit that horror sweet spot. Cinematic universes are all the rage now but it's easy to forget how recent a phenomenon this actually is. The notion of a cinematic universe didn't really exist until around 2010 when it became clear what Marvel Studios was doing with its various superhero franchises in the lead-up to the record-breaking "The Avengers" in the summer of 2012. Sure, we had Kevin Smith's films making up the View Askewniverse starting with "Clerks" in 1994 -- not to mention Universal's monster movie crossovers from decades earlier. Still, once Marvel perfected the model, Hollywood chased it down rabidly. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it fails spectacularly. The sequel follows Sister Irene (Farmiga) as she once again comes face to face with the demonic Valak in 1956. “The Nun 2” is written by “M3GAN” screenwriter Akela Cooper and “Fear the Walking Dead” writers Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing.
“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” helmer Michael Chaves directs the Warner Bros. feature.

Demián Bichir returns as Father Burke, along with guide Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet), as the Romanian monastery is exorcised. “Euphoria” and “The Last of Us” star Storm Reid joins the franchise for “The Nun 2,” along with Anna Popplewell and Katelyn Rose Downey.
“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” helmer Michael Chaves directs the Warner Bros. feature.

In celebration of the release of the fifth chapter in the franchise, Insidious: The Red Door, franchise star Patrick Wilson stops by Bloody Disgusting’s Boo Crew Podcast to discuss not only his journey in the role of Josh Lambert but on his transition into the Director’s chair as well.
The Insidious series has been a terrifying adventure exploring various central characters and timelines since the original film arrived in theaters 13 years ago. This latest tale picks up right after the events of 2013’s Chapter 2. Patrick had this to say when asked if he had any concept of where the Lambert’s story could go moving forward.
“I have no idea! I don’t. You know, the tag at the end of the movie, if you stay thru the credits, was as much to show that you need a balance of light and dark, you know, and clearly, you guys work at Bloody Disgusting,...

After starring in Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, Patrick Wilson has returned to the Blumhouse franchise for Insidious: Red Door. Although the upcoming film, which premiers July 7, marks the fifth installment in the horror franchise, it serves as a direct sequel to Insidious: Chapter 2. As audiences may remember, the second film concluded with Josh Lambert (Wilson) and his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) going under hypnosis to forget the horrors they had endured. Wilson returns to reprise the role of Josh and also helms the film, which marks his directorial debut. In a recent interview with GameSpot, Wilson opened up about his directorial efforts. He said:
"I really wanted to unpack the second movie and address the trauma. That's the only way that I knew how to make a movie that I was passionate about, that I felt like I had any authority to make. So luckily, I'm surrounded by people...

Patrick Wilson, who makes his directorial debut with Insidious: The Red Door, is unsure if he also wants to direct The Conjuring: Last Rites. The "scream king" actor is best known for his portrayal of the paranormal investigator Ed Warren alongside Vera Farmiga as his wife Lorraine in The Conjuring universe, starring in three main installments and the 2019 spinoff Annabelle Comes Home with the duo set to return for a fourth film. Before then, Wilson makes his directorial debut with Insidious: The Red Door, which releases July 7 and also sees him reprise his role as Josh Lambert.
In a new interview with ComicBook for Insidious: The Red Door, Wilson was asked whether he would be interested in directing The Conjuring 4. The actor-turned-director gave a nuanced answer, saying he would need to "see the story" before making a decision about directing. He also says that, no matter what his next directorial project is,...

The Conjuring: Last Rites is the fourth installment in the hugely popular horror franchise, telling a completely new story while bringing back some memorable faces from the cast of the first three movies. The Conjuring movies have been some of the most critically and commercially successful horror films of the modern era, spawning multiple spinoffs as part of The Conjuring Universe, such as The Nun, Annabelle, and The Curse of La Llarona. However, it’s the main saga that has been most positively received, with The Conjuring: Last RItes returning to the formula and retelling another ghost story inspired by real events.
The core installments of The Conjuring Universe follow the adventures of Ed and Lorraine Warren, two real-life ghost hunters who rose to fame throughout the 20th century after seemingly protecting multiple families from malicious spirits. It’s unknown exactly which case The Conjuring: Last Rites’ story will draw from,...

Insidious: The Red Door is the fifth installment in the hugely popular horror franchise, bringing back plenty of familiar franchise characters for their deadliest and most dangerous adventure yet. The Insidious movies are notorious for their terrifying jump scares and haunting atmospheres, which rank them among the scariest and most intense horror movies of the modern era. Franchises are in fashion and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not the only proof of this. Horror sagas like The Conjuring or The Purge have shown that telling different stories within the same universe can work very well, even if it wasn't planned from the very beginning.
The first film in the horror franchise created by James Wan was released in 2013, and a total of eight films and five short films have been released since then, with The Conjuring 4 and The Nun 2 soon to be released. However, 10 years ago, not even Wan himself imagined how far the franchise would go.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director explained how a great shared universe was created from a movie in the best style of Marvel Studios:

Previously, the documentary Amityville: An Origin Story featured a strong emphasis on the paranormal investigations taking place within the haunted mansion. In certain ways, the psychics who performed a planchette or whatever within the home felt the presence of an evil spirit there. Following their active participation in the paranormal investigation of the Amityville mansion, Lorraine and Ed Warren gained a lot of attention. Ronnie’s defense attorney, William Weber, was also mentioned, as was his plan to profit off the Amityville horror story. Not only Weber, but nearly everyone engaged in the case, was chasing money. The Lutzes were attempting to advertise their book, “The Amityville Horror True Story,” but it was filled with fabrication rather than what had really happened in that house. Let’s see what conclusion we are going to reach by the end of the final episode of Amityville: An Origin Story Was the Amityville mansion ever inhabited by evil,...

"Insidious: The Red Door," the fifth film in the "Insidious" series, will mark the directorial debut of actor Patrick Wilson. Many horror fans got to know Wilson not only as the star of the first two "Insidious" movies, but also as the affable ghost-hunter Ed Warren in several features set in the "Conjuring" universe. Wilson is horror's dad. He's also a long-working, talented actor who has appeared in any number of intense indie pieces, thrillers, superhero blockbusters, and Oscar-bait dramas. He has been nominated for two Tony awards (for "The Full Monty" and for "Oklahoma!") and an Emmy (for "Angels in America"), and is never anything less than a dynamic, serviceable screen presence.
In the "Insidious" movies, Wilson plays Josh Lambert, the father of a 10-year-old named Dalton (Ty Simpkins) who possesses astral projection powers. Dalton has unwittingly attracted demons and ghosts out of an eerie purgatorial realm called The...

James Wan hints that The Conjuring 4 may be the final film in the franchise. In October 2022, it was officially announced that The Conjuring 4 was in the works with writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick returning to the pen the script, one of the minds behind The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. In 2021, the third Conjuring movie grossed over 206 million at the box office, which was enough to push the franchise's total earnings over 2 billion and make it the highest-grossing horror franchise in history. But still, the overall future of The Conjuring franchise remains uncertain.
Now, just a few months after The Conjuring 4 was confirmed, James Wan has hinted at some disappointing news for the future of the horror franchise. During a recent interview with Collider, Wan hinted at The Conjuring 4 "potentially wrapping up" the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren. When asked for clarification if the...

Demonic possession films haven't had a good movie in a few years, with My Best Friend's Exorcism on Amazon being the newest and not receiving the most positive reviews. But while there are no great possession films out lately, there are some great movies from past years.
There are many popular tropes within these demonic possession films, from priests performing exorcisms to entire haunted families, and they've been iconic aspects of the genre, made popular by classics like The Exorcist. However, there are also films that subvert these traditional tropes, challenging viewers' expectations and taking things in a new direction.
An Innocent Is Possessed - The Shining (1980)
One of the most common possession tropes in these films is an innocent, like a child or an elderly person, being overtaken by the forces of evil. The Exorcist is one of the most popular movies that popularized this iconic trope.

28 Days Haunted is Netflix's latest venture into the world of paranormal investigation, with three teams visiting the previously researched sites by famed paranormal investigation legends Lorraine and Ed Warren, who would go on to inspire The Conjuring film franchise.
Like other ghost-hunting shows, the teams have to stay in their haunted location, but instead of spending one night, they have to spend a full 28 days in their spot. The show's cast will be tested to their mental limits as they experience unexplainable sounds, feelings of dread, and things moving without any prompting. The series began streaming on October 21.

After spending the better part of five years in development, James Wan has confirmed that The Conjuring's Crooked Man spinoff movie has been scrapped. The entity was first introduced to the horror franchise in 2016's The Conjuring 2, being one of many the demon Valak used to torment both Ed and Lorraine Warren and the Hodgson family. Development on a Crooked Man spinoff movie was said to be in the works the following year, with Wan penning a story treatment and Mike Van Waes brought on to write the script, though whatever progress the two may have made seems to be going by the wayside.
James Wan recently took to his Instagram to share a variety of behind-the-scenes images from The Conjuring 2, giving new looks at Javier Botet's The Crooked Man character. While celebrating the actor's work on the film and in helping create the terrifying entity,...

"The Conjuring" franchise has easily given us some of the best horror movies of the last decade — and Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson's terrific on-screen chemistry as the badass demon-hunting couple Ed and Lorraine Warren makes it all the more special. With effective jumpscares, a genuinely moving ghost story, and romance as its secret ingredient, James Wan's "The Conjuring" works as a film that features both a horror tale and a love story.
The sequel has one of the greatest love scenes we've ever seen in a horror movie — and it's a scene that moved James Wan enough to return to the helm for the film.
Ed Warren's Musical Genius
James Wan is the mind behind several horror franchises, including "Saw," but "The Conjuring" features his most extraordinary love story yet. Wan tells this tale utilizing a highly-fictionalized version of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

If you look at James Wan's career since the beginning, it's impressive how far he has come in a relatively short time. A horror maestro, most now know the director for his work on "The Conjuring" universe. The frightful film franchise started out focusing on the paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, before expanding to cover all the supernatural entities that have been directly or indirectly involved in the Warrens' lives.
If they didn't know Wan from his work on that IP, most audiences today may associate him now with the balls-to-the-wall horror film "Malignant." The movie with a shocking twist ruled the internet for months after its release last year, producing memes focusing on the villainous Gabriel. A horror film that was fun and didn't take itself seriously was just what horror audiences needed, and Wan and his wife, Ingrid Bisu, delivered.

Vice’s “The 3:07 Am Project” gave four emerging horror filmmakers a chance to play around in ‘The Conjuring’ universe with minute-long morsels of murder.
The Conjuring has proven itself to be a worthy cinematic universe, delivering two proper sequels and a slew of spin-offs, with more creepy content on the way to further expand the multi-billion dollar horror franchise. The reception towards Ed and Lorraine Warren’s cinematic antics has somewhat cooled down in recent years and left audiences wondering if what’s currently on slate for The Conjuring universe will be its last hurrah or if “The Nun 3” or “Crooked Man Vs. Annabelle” are inevitable.
There are lofty expectations in place when it comes to The Conjuring IP, but there were also surprisingly ambitious plans in place even during the production of the original movie. A connected Conjuring universe may not have been on anyone’s radar yet.

Ed and Lorraine Warren; two of the most renowned paranormal investigators in American history. While they are now known to a larger audience due to their characterizations in the phenomenally successful franchise that spun-off from The Conjuring films, the Connecticut natives accrued an almost four decade history of investigations into the paranormal - long before the current slew of reality based "ghost hunting" television shows. So without further hesitation, let us take a look at seven of the more notorious investigations conducted by Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Update: With no major new releases, this was a strong holdover weekend at the international box office, led by last week’s champ, New Line/Warner Bros’ The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, followed by Disney’s Cruella and Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II.
In the case of Conjuring 3, it crossed $100M global after adding another $23.4M in 51 markets for a good 44% drop this session. That brings the offshore running total to $68M and the worldwide cume to $111.8M. There are 18 markets still to release including Germany, Japan and Taiwan.
France was the biggest new market, and the biggest play for the film this weekend, with $5M at No. 1 and a 66% share of the Top 5 films. This is on par with the opening of Conjuring 2 and above all other films in the Conjuring Universe (excluding previews).

This article contains The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It spoilers.
Though the latest Conjuring movie, The Devil Made Me Do It, is named after the Arne Johnson murder case, whereby a young man claimed the crime he committed was caused by demonic possession, there’s an entirely new subplot that carries the body of the new film.
After the supposedly possessed Arne Johnson is held in custody awaiting trial for the murder of his girlfriend’s landlord, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are on a mission to discover how and why these possessions took place. While the Johnson case is based on real events, the reasons behind the possession, as posed within The Devil Made Me Do It, are completely fictional.
No matter! This allows the filmmakers to introduce the shadowy figure of The Occultist (played by Eugenie Bondurant), as well as...
