One of the benefits of hosting any sort of news or discussion program on TV is an authorization to talk. Now some TV journalists and personalities are also being given permission to bite.
NBCUniversal needs to get out the proverbial Bactine after being savaged earlier this week by many of its top news personalities over the hire made by NBC News executives of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel. McDaniel was, until Wednesday, to have been a prominent political-news analyst weighing in on topics as the 2024 presidential election drew close. But the prospect of paying someone who had openly tried to help former President Donald Trump discredit the results of the 2020 election raised the internal alarms of many NBC News anchors and many of them — including Joe Scarborough, Joy Reid, Rachel Maddow and Nicolle Wallace — took significant time on Monday to push back against the decision, with Maddow spending...

In its never-ending effort to try to reach younger news consumers, CNN has launched CNN Shorts — a new vertical video player on its website designed for smartphones.
CNN already produces vertical-video news briefs for platforms including TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Now it sees a growing opportunity for CNN Shorts on its owned-and-operated platforms — where it can directly sell its own advertising. CNN Digital’s vertical video experience launched in beta Oct. 25 at cnn.com/shorts/cnn-shorts.
The “vast majority” of CNN’s audience consumes its content on mobile, and specifically mobile web, said Athan Stephanopoulos, CNN EVP and chief digital officer. “This is a huge opportunity to not only bring a more native mobile video experience to our audience, but also our advertising partners,” he said.
Even without any real promotion, viewers have been finding CNN Shorts. Since launching on cnn.com, CNN Shorts video completion rates are up...

CNN keeps feeding the mouths that bite it.
As Warner Bros. Discovery has orchestrated massive changes and cuts to the popular news giant, a stream of producers, anchors and executives have left — some of their own volition, and many of them not. But no matter the case, a growing number of these now-former CNN die-hards are being scooped up by rivals including MSNBC, ABC News and CBS News.
CBS News on Wednesday announced it had lined up Lisa Ling as a contributor. The veteran journalist spent eight years at CNN leading viewers through interesting issues as host of the documentary series, This Is Life,” which was cancelled amid a cutback of original programming that uses outside partners. ABC News on Wednesday announced that Brooke Bower, who had been managing editor of CNN Politics, was joining as executive producer of the Sunday politics show “This Week.”

When President Joe Biden visits Florida on Wednesday, he will be seeing for himself the destructive impact of Hurricane Ian, which has claimed more than 100 lives, wiped out entire neighborhoods and left questions of the timing of evacuation orders.
Before the storm made landfall, networks dispatched crews, and eventually their major anchors, but even as there was anticipation of a major disaster, correspondents on the ground reported with expressions of surprise at the ultimate scale, scope and intensity of the hurricane and its impact.
ABC News chief meteorologist Ginger Zee, CBS News lead national correspondent David Begnaud, CNN chief climate correspondent Bill Weir, Fox Weather correspondent Robert Ray, NBC News correspondent Steve Patterson and The Weather Channel’s Stephanie Abrams separately shared their experiences covering Ian and the aftermath.

Another former CNN+ series has found a new home.
CNN will debut the new original series (More Than) A Cooking Show with Alison Roman this fall, the channel says. The series will see Roman traveling around New York and Italy, learning about some of her favorite ingredients and, yes, sharing ways to cook them.
Roman, a chef and cookbook author, has worked at Bon Appétit and The New York Times, but she also forged a brand through her social media and YouTube channels. CNN announced her CNN+ pickup ahead of the streaming service’s launch. It is not immediately clear what day or time Roman’s show will air on CNN, though the channel has made an effort to reimagine its Sunday lineup, which could make for a potential landing spot.

CBS News hasn’t put the same kind of spotlight on weather as many of its rivals, but that may all be about to change as quickly as a shift in the wind.
The Paramount Global news unit is teaming with The Weather Channel to bring more reporting on weather and climate to CBS News programs including “CBS Mornings” and “The CBS Evening News,” as well as the division’s streaming efforts. Some of the most popular Weather Channel personalities — including Stephanie Abrams, Jim Cantore and Mike Bettes — are likely to turn up on CBS News programs in reports that originate from Weather Channel’s Atlanta headquarters. CBS viewers will also get to see augmented-reality technology that helps depict what a specific community might look like while in the midst of a tornado, snow or rain. As CNN’s many journalists tried to delve into the ouster of Jeff Zucker, but ran up against one of their biggest professional hurdles: a source who refuses to talk.
Some of WarnerMedia’s best-known on-air personalities pressed the company’s CEO Jason Kilar again and again on Monday, asking him to divulge more details around why Zucker resigned after acknowledging a personal relationship with Allison Gollust, CNN’s chief marketing officer. But Kilar would not.
The WarnerMedia chief faced questions from Don Lemon, Alisyn Camerota, Brian Stelter, Jim Sciutto, Bill Weir, Richard Quest, John Avlon and Victor Blackwell, as well as longtime producer Jim Murphy, many of them pressing him for more information about whether the parent company felt Zucker was given a harsher punishment than was necessary; about whether WarnerMedia was negotiating with Chris Cuomo, fired by Zucker last year, over severance; and whether the looming merger of...

If WarnerMedia is really looking to replace Jeff Zucker, the company isn’t telling a lot of people about it.
Zucker, the veteran media executive who oversees both CNN and Warner’s sports business, said earlier this year he intended to step down from his roles around the end of 2021, when his current employment contract is set to expire. With a little more than five months to go, however, five people inside and outside the company who would have typically have knowledge of the parameters of an executive search say they are not aware of one taking place, lending ballast to the notion that Zucker may have reason to stay into 2022.
WarnerMedia declined to comment.
In public, Zucker has continued to say he expects to leave on the timeline he has described. Now, however, he seems likely to have the option to remain in place until at least the completion...

CNN will bring Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen together for the fourth year in a row for “CNN New Year’s Eve,” where the two hosts will undoubtedly fill the night reflecting on the insane year that was 2020. Unlike previous years, Cooper and Cohen won’t be surrounded by a crowd crush of people — you can thank the pandemic for that. But they still plan to broadcast their show live from the historic spot as they do every year.
The night will kick off at 8 p.m. Et, and include performances from John Mayer, Snoop Dogg, Patti Labelle, Jimmy Buffett, Carole Baskin, Josh Groban, Leslie Jordan, Dulce Sloan, Desus & Mero, Kylie Minogue, Aloe Blacc, Goo Goo Dolls and Jon Bon Jovi.

When Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen try to show CNN viewers the sights and sounds of New Year’s Eve in Times Square this year, they will face one of their biggest challenges: There won’t be any.
The throngs of people who come to see the fabled ball drop in what is billed as New York’s “Crossroads of the World” won’t be in attendance, due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. For Cooper and Cohen, however, the show must go on.
People at home will want to watch and ring out a terrible year, says Cooper. “We want it to be a New Year’s Eve without all the mishegoss. You don’t have to have all the sturm and drang. You can just stay home and watch us go through it,” he says, in an interview. Besides, says Cohen, “I certainly pledge to get Anderson as...

More than a decade ago, ABC News pulled off an amazing feat: a 2007 special edition of “20/20” that called attention to the rapid deterioration of the global environment. Reporters were stationed on all seven continents. The news unit even managed to have the lights turned off on the Empire State Building and Times Square to symbolize the dire threat posed by the decline of the earth’s natural support systems. Anchor Diane Sawyer had to use a flashlight – on camera – to maneuver around the set.
Bill Weir, then an ABC News correspondent who provided a report for the special from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, thought it marked the start of a real focus by TV-news outlets on the challenges of climate change. He was wrong.

Discovery Channel couldn’t attract a caravan of viewers to “Border Live,” which was pulled from the schedule last month after three airings. The final episode aired on Dec. 19, and attracted just 430,000 viewers and a 0.1 rating among adults 18-49.
Discovery had initially announced “Border Live” as a six-part limited series, but in success the show might have continued on — in the vein of A&E’s hugely popular “Live P.D.,” which has inspired a trend of live on-the-ground projects.
But given the disappointing early sampling, the network confirmed to Variety that it decided to end “Border Live” earlier than planned. In the run-up to the 2018 midterm elections, news of a migrant caravan moving through Mexico toward the United States dominated the airwaves. As President Trump regularly thundered about the threat, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC dedicated extensive resources to the story.
After the elections, however, interest in the caravan fell sharply at all three networks, according to data provided to TheWrap by the video monitoring service Grabien. While Fox News had the most caravan coverage the week before Election Day, CNN and MSNBC shared President Trump’s fixation on the migrants moving very slowly north.
From Oct. 30 to Nov. 5, the seven days immediately preceding election day, Grabien data found the word “caravan” was spoken 1,202 times on Fox News, 834 times on CNN and 586 times on MSNBC.
From Nov. 7 to to Nov. 13, the seven days immediately after the election, Fox News mentioned the word “caravan” just 203 times – an 83 percent drop in references – CNN 75 times and MSNBC 110 times.

The Associated Press deleted a tweet Sunday evening that called a large caravan of migrants from Central America a ragged “army.” The decision from the wire service came just hours after the tweet was posted and sustained heavy criticism online.
“We have deleted a tweet about the migrant caravan moving through Central America and Mexico because it lacked context. A new tweet will be posted shortly,” the AP said.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sent out a call for five-word movie summaries on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. And thousands of people responded — including “Terminator” star and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Share the plot of your favorite movie in five words.
— The Academy (@TheAcademy) July 31, 2018
It’s a refreshingly off-brand idea from the Academy, being a hell of a lot more succinct than the typical Oscar acceptance speech, and the responses have been pretty fun and often very clever. For instance, Schwarzenegger, who not surprisingly picked the plot of his career-defining hits “The Terminator” and “Terminator 2.”
