Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman is on the way, and you can get your first look right here.
Chris Pine’s Poolman is set to release next month courtesy of Vertical in the US and Signature Entertainment here in the UK. Poolman marks Pine’s directorial debut and is said to be an LA-based mystery comedy which to our mind, brings forth notes of The Big Lebowski or Under The Silver Lake.
Whether Poolman can hit these highs remains to be seen, although the film did find itself coming under some fire when it released at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Still, we won’t be judging it until we’ve seen it with our own eyes and the opportunity to do that will soon be arising. The film releases on the 10th of May in the US although here in the UK, Signature haven’t yet dated its release.

"Dear Moviegoer, thanks for watching my trailer." You're welcome, Mister Poolman. Vertical has unveiled a teaser trailer for the wacky stoner comedy titled Poolman, marking the directorial debut of actor Chris Pine. He shot this film in 2022 when the pandemic was still on, and now it's set for release starting in May in theaters around the country. It originally premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, but got terrible reviews (and even a few walk outs) from most critics. Poolman is described a stoner riff on the noir classic Chinatown. It's about a hapless dreamer and would-be philosopher who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block in sunny LA. When he uncovers the greatest water heist, he does what he can to protect his precious city. Chris Pine also stars as Darren Barrenman, the titular "poolman", with Annette Being, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh,...

Great TV shows can have divisive seasons - like Twin Peaks season 2 - with filler but also amazing moments. Lost season 6's controversial ending is worth revisiting for its character focus and themes. True Detective season 2 was critiqued, but had standout performances and should be re-evaluated.
Many great TV shows have had divisive seasons, and while some are genuinely irredeemable, others may be worth a second glance. Maintaining consistent excellence in television is incredibly difficult, as many shows tend to suffer from going on too long, and many others take their time to find their footing. For example, later seasons of The Walking Dead began to feel redundant, leading to a lackluster finale. On the other hand, The Simpsons struggled in its premiere season before becoming one of the most iconic shows of its era.

Twin Peaks pushed the boundaries of TV genres, combining drama, horror, and soap opera in a unique way. Russian Doll explored existential themes through a genre-bending mix of comedy, drama, and science fiction. BoJack Horseman began as a sitcom but evolved into a deeply sad drama, blending comedy, drama, and psychological exploration.
Certain TV shows were so unique that they could not be categorized into any one genre. While some television series could be spoken about in simple black-and-white terms, such as procedurals, sitcoms, or teen dramas, other shows have defied this type of classification and forged an identity that was so entirely their own that it became hard to even compare them to another existing series or popular genre. These are the types of television series that have pushed the boundaries of contemporary media and allowed for more creativity, experimentation, and unique storytelling devices to come into the mainstream.

In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Hope and Fear", a visiting alien named Arturis (Ray Wise) helpfully translates some coded information that the U.S.S. Voyager had recently discovered on an abandoned communications network. Arturis unexpectedly decodes the location of a nearby empty Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Dauntless, an experimental craft that is equipped with a new kind of warp "slipstream" technology. The Dauntless, unbeknownst to the Voyager crew, was sent specifically out to the Delta Quadrant to bring the Voyager crew back to Earth, and Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) is elated.
It will eventually be revealed, of course, that the Dauntless is an elaborate booby trap constructed by Arturis, who had been secretly hellbent on revenge. His species had recently been assimilated by the Borg, and he blamed Janeway for his planet's destruction. About a year earlier, Janeway had allied with the Borg to pass...

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Jeepers Creepers 2 was Written and Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Joseph Wilson, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Way back in 2001, Jeepers Creepers introduced us to a very effective movie monster who likes nothing more than to harvest and then eat the organs of human beings. The film, starring Justin Long and Gina Philips was hugely popular, and managed to rake in almost $60 million dollars internationally from a reported budget of just $10 million dollars. When you factor in the subsequent profit the film will have made from the various home entertainment revenue streams, you can see why it’s spawned three sequels, to date. The first movie took the horror landscape by surprise, so naturally the first sequel wouldn’t be far away, and before you could say ‘please don’t...

Dead End is the embodiment of the old saying “road to nowhere.” In this 2003 horror movie, one unlucky family’s annual trip to grandma’s house doesn’t go according to plan. What awaits these unsuspecting characters is a series of events that will steer them straight into the unknown. It’s one hell of a Christmas in this macabre holiday tale, which stirs up uncertainty and unrest as the pavement stretches on forever.
Dead End first showed up on video-store shelves around 2004 after enjoying great success at multiple film festivals. Made on a low budget of less than a million dollars and with a small cast of actors, this California-shot yet French-financed horror-comedy has, strangely enough, yet to be reissued on a physical media format higher than DVD. Nevertheless, it remains a cult favorite all these years later. The colorful dialogue, the progressively unnerving atmosphere, and the ensemble of...

J.R. was waiting in line with maybe 200 fellow fans to spend a moment getting the autograph of – and perhaps taking a selfie with – Christina Ricci, the actress who made her debut in the “Addams Family” movies in the 1990s who is now an Emmy-nominated star on the Showtime series “Yellowjackets” as well as a regular on Netflix’s “Wednesday.” The setting on Saturday was the Hollywood Autograph Show at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel, a three-times-a-year movie and memorabilia event where fans can come to lay eyes on some old-time celebrity favorites, get their name in ink, pose for a selfie and maybe pick up a book or vintage photograph.
Eighty or so celebrities staked out tables to sign their name and pix for a fee. J.R. was one of those who got hooked on attending these shows a few years back and now never misses one.

In many respects, even attempting to write this piece is foolhardy. Articles like this are usually the space to explore an ending that alters a franchise's trajectory, a climactic twist, or something ambiguous that makes you choose what you believed happened. These can all be explained through logic and rationality, and often times, the creators of these works themselves will do interviews about how they see their endings. Storytelling in a visual medium — especially with mainstream Hollywood storytelling — tends to be rather blunt in its desire to impart some sort of message or arrive at a conclusion that satisfies the dramatic and emotional elements of the story.

Actor Chris Pine recently debuted his directorial debut film at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the film's early reviews ahead of its wide release have landed Poolman a "rotten" score.
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Poolman has debuted with a score of 20% based on 20 reviews. Most of the critics are not pulling their punches with Poolman, as some of the reviews are quite scathing. Giving the film an "F" grade, IndieWire reviewer Siddhant Adlakha noted, "It’s only 100 minutes long, but upward of 99 of those minutes are likely to be spent in silent boredom, if not irritated disbelief at being subjected to such guileless, artless nonsense."

Lt. Boimler's first away mission in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 3, "In the Cradle of Vexilon," sends him to a strange room resembling Twin Peaks' Red Room. The appearance of the Red Room is likely just a shoutout to Twin Peaks and doesn't have significant meaning in the Star Trek universe. Chris Pine's debut film as a director, Poolman, received a terrible reception at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. The film is described as an unfunny spoof of neo-noir thrillers with poor execution, hazy direction, messy storytelling, and unbearable dialogue. Despite the committed cast and Pine's natural talent for directing, the film falls short due to its silly characterizations, unfunny script, and wonky dialogue, resulting in a disastrous end product.
You can tell a lot about an actor’s vision based on his first feature film. Most debut their work with a definitive style while others concentrate on telling a proper story. But every so often, there comes a first-time director whose work makes very little sense due to poor execution. Unfortunately, the latest to fall in this category is Chris Pine’s Poolman. Poolman, directed by Chris Pine, is receiving negative reviews as his first project as a director, with a score of 25% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics highlight issues with the screenplay, Pine's performance, and the overall tone and coherence of the film. Despite the recognizable cast, some believe Poolman is one of the worst movies to play at a major festival, jeopardizing Pine's position as Hollywood's best Chris.
Poolman is already sinking Chris Pine's short career as a director. "Jacob's Ladder" reveals that the terrifying visions of a Vietnam veteran are actually attempts to save his life on the battlefield. In "Dead End," a family lost on their way to a party actually died in a car crash and are unaware of their own deaths. "Reeker" surprises viewers by revealing that the college students being killed off were already dead from a car crash at the start of the film.
While it is usually a cop-out for a movie to reveal that the hero was dead all along, sometimes, this classic twist can be shockingly effective. The revelation that a story’s hero has secretly been dead for the entire plot, unbeknownst to themselves, is one of the oldest tricks in the book. The premise dates back as far as author Ambrose Bierce’s endlessly influential 1890 short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.”

The pool dude abides.
Somewhere early on in the creative process, Chris Pine and his writing-producing partner Ian Gotler clearly thought they were on to something inspired with Poolman, which seemingly set out to reimagine Chinatown as a Coen brothers movie, with Pine playing the title character — a long-haired, scraggly bearded Zen master of a pool cleaner turned bumbling sleuth. But the end result, also serving as Pine’s directorial debut, goes tonally off the rails from the start and proceeds to hit bottom with excruciating momentum, dragging a game ensemble, including Annette Bening, Danny DeVito and Jennifer Jason Leigh, down for the count.
Given its world premiere at Toronto, where it arrived looking for distribution, this TIFF stiff will likely have a tough time finding a home based on the tepid response from the customarily effusive festival audience.

Exclusive: L.A.-based Brit Stuart Ford has operated at the sharp end of international film sales and movie financing for more than two decades.

Neill Blomkamp had plans to make a direct sequel to 1987's Robocop, picking up right after the events of the original movie. Blomkamp wanted to emulate director Paul Verhoeven's style for the sequel, wanting it to feel like it was the day after the original film. While Robocop Returns never made it to the screen, a new Robocop movie and TV series are currently in the works, with Prime Video holding the rights to the franchise.
Neill Blomkamp is often seen as a director with some of the biggest unrealized movies in his vault of projects that never made it beyond the development stage. Alongside the likes of his Alien 5 pitch, another “one that got away” was his plan to make a direct sequel to 1987’s Robocop. In a recent interview promoting Gran Turismo, Blomkamp shared some details about the movie that would have been entitled Robocop Returns, and...

Long before every conceivable comic book character received a film adaptation in the hopes of becoming the next blockbuster, there was Superman. While box office returns diminished over the course of four movies, the Man of Steel’s big-screen success heralded a crop of other superhero movies. Producers Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan swooped in to acquire the film rights to DC Comics’ other most well-known character, Batman (and they remain executive producers on every Batman movie), along with a more obscure title, Swamp Thing.

Veering sharply away from the visceral horror that put him on the map, Wes Craven followed up the game-changing The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes with the one-two punch of the silly, surreal Deadly Blessing and the comic-book adaptation Swamp Thing. An enjoyable enough romp if taken as an amiably lunk-headed action flick, Swamp Thing starts off with an effectively mounted first act that soon gives way to a lot of splashing around in the swamps, punctuated with some incongruously poetic (and oddly endearing) Beauty and the Beast-type moments, and liberally peppered with all the airboat crashes and cigar-chomping David Hess close-ups you could ever want. Add to that running tally Adrienne Barbeau doffing her wardrobe for some tastefully lensed skinny-dipping and an ultra-suave, Nietzsche-spouting turn from Louis Jourdan as villainous Dr. Anton Arcane and it all adds up to a surefire cult film in the making.

There have been a few attempts to make a success of DC’s Swamp Thing, from live action movies of the 1980s, through an animated children’s cartoon and the one-season wonder of 2019’s TV series. Now a new movie based on the plant/human hybrid has been surprisingly announced as part of the new Dcu’s first wave of projects, with Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold taking the helm.
While promoting Harrison Ford’s final Indiana Jones outing, Mangold revealed a few more details about how he believes the new iteration of Swamp Thing will fit into the world James Gunn and Peter Safran are creating around the characters of DC. In essence, it really doesn’t as far as he is concerned. Mangold told Variety:

Star Trek: Prodigy's USS Protostar was created to fix the mistakes made by Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and her crew during seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager. As the only Federation vessel in the Delta Quadrant, the USS Voyager had to make some difficult decisions while traveling this previously uncharted region of space. Mistakes were certainly made, and Janeway was always willing to accept the consequences of her actions. Her new starship, the USS Dauntless, was a reminder of those mistakes, as its namesake was an elaborate trap designed by a vengeful scientist, widowed due to Janeway's temporary alliance with the Borg Collective.
Star Trek: Prodigy established that, by 2383, it was much easier to travel between the Alpha and Delta Quadrant. This opportunity was made possible by the experimental proto-drive equipped aboard the USS Protostar. Janeway hoped the Protostar's mission would go some way to mending the mistakes she had previously made.

The following article contains spoilers for "Batman: The Killing Joke."
Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill were the Dynamic Duo. Yes, that usually refers to Batman and Robin, but in this case, it's the two actors that have been responsible for so many animated TV series and films as Batman and his nemesis, the Joker. Conroy, the definitive voice of Batman, passed away at the age of 66 at the end of 2022, and many fans, myself included, have been rewatching some of the duo's work as a tribute. One of the later projects the two of them did together was the animated film "Batman: The Killing Joke."
The 2016 title was based on the graphic novel of the same name by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, and was the 26th of the DC Universe animated original movies. In the film, the Joker (voice of Hamill) attempts to drive Commissioner Gordon (voice of Ray Wise...
