The late Manga creator Akira Toriyama was unhappy with Hollywood after the industry ruined the loosely based live-action adaptation of his most famous work, Dragon Ball. It was Toriyama’s work that made the anime genre popular in the West. Toriyama, like any other Dragon Ball fan, had criticized the 2009 film starring Justin Chatwin and Emmy Rossum, Dragon Ball: Evolution.

Toriyama passed away on March 1, 2024, due to acute subdural hematoma. In a statement released by Bird Studio, the studio that he founded, they expressed their gratitude to fans who supported his work for over 45 years. They also revealed that the creator was in the middle of several works at the time of his passing.

The producers at New Line Cinema had the opening fatality of Final Destination 3 in their back pocket well before the movie’s 2006 premiere. In fact, talks of a deadly theme park ride made the rounds before creative partners James Wong and Glen Morgan returned to write the script. After the disappointing return on 2003’s Willard, New Line wanted something thrilling for its next horror project. A “roller coaster” movie, as New Line founder Robert Shaye put it. Like-minded Richard Brener is also owed some credit; the executive producer apparently was on the same wavelength after brainstorming ideas — initially anything big and transportational, such as boats and trains — for the intended conclusion of this franchise. However, the overwhelming box-office numbers steered the original plan off course and Death lived on to kill another day.

Horror has come into its own in the 21st century. This is not to say that the genre has ever not been one of the most interesting and creative in the long history of cinema. Since nearly the beginning of the art form, using moving images to scare audiences has been a gateway for aspirin filmmakers to break into the industry—or for even veterans to creatively something about the greater world by painting a landscape of anxiety.
Nonetheless, the 21st century (particularly beginning in its second decade) has brought a renewed appreciation for scary movies’ abilities to speak to audiences with more than just “boo.” With that in mind, we at Den of Geek have polled our staff and collected the below list of what we generally consider to be the best chillers of the fast quarter-century or so. Enjoy.

The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. We’re still waiting to hear a release date for that, as obviously the company wasn’t able to meet the hoped-for October release window – but while we wait for the special physical media release, Trick or Treat is set to making its streaming debut on the Screambox service this Friday, October 27th! Just in time for Halloween viewing!
Directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Rhet Topham, Joel Soisson, and Michael S. Murphey (with an uncredited polish from the Final Destination duo of James Wong and Glen Morgan), Trick or Treat has the following synopsis: This mesmerizing horror adventure takes you into the terrifying dark side of rock’n’roll. When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 3, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.
Anything that was deemed paranormal, supernatural or unexplainable was called an “X-File” — the cases that no one else in the agency wanted to touch.
In the show’s 11 seasons, they dealt with more than just aliens and shadowy government conspiracies. Their cases involved demons, ghosts, serial killers, sea monsters and even vampires. In celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary, here are the episodes with the scariest villains and killer creatures.

From their windowless sub-basement office, FBI Agents Fox “Spooky” Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) began their assignment on The X-Files chasing little green men, or rather gray, as Mulder points out during the third episode, “Squeeze.” The “Pilot” episode was about alien experimentation. “Deep Throat” was about pilots who fly experimental craft, possibly designed using extraterrestrial technology. Season 1 episode 3 was more down to earth, while still out of this world.
According to both his DNA report and FBI profile, animal control officer Eugene Victor Tooms (Doug Hutchison) would be due to wake up some time in 2023, if only he’d have stepped off that mini-mall escalator. It’s time for another episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a film that was released in 2000 and kicked off a franchise with four sequels and counting. The film in question is Final Destination (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above.
Directed by James Wong, who crafted the screenplay with Glen Morgan and Jeffrey Reddick, Final Destination has the following synopsis: Alex Browning is embarking on a trip to Paris when he experiences a premonition — he sees the plane explode moments after leaving the ground. Alex insists that everyone get off the plane and 7 people including Alex are forced to disembark. All watch as the plane actually explodes in a fireball. Last week, we heard the awesome news that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat is one of my all-time favorites, but since the VHS era it has only gotten a barebones DVD release (which is available for a high price Here) and a Blu-ray in Germany. So this ranks high as some of the coolest news I’ve seen lately: Synapse Films is putting together a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) of Trick or Treat that they’re hoping to send out into the world by the end of 2023!
Full details on the release aren’t available at this time, as they’re too early in the process, but Synapse Films is collaborating with Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures to make sure it’s the best it can be. The livestream announcement can be viewed on Facebook.

In its most infamous monster-of-the-week episode, "Home," Fox's "The X-Files" took the idea of small-town American isolationism to the furthest extreme network TV would allow. First broadcast in October 1996 — two months before the TV Parental Guidelines system went into effect — "Home" juxtaposes Norman Rockwell images with hidden horrors that could be triggering even now for some viewers. In the span of one hour, the episode toggles between blue skies, baseball, a cornfield and Cadillac, '50s pop, references to "The Andy Griffith Show," and much uglier subject matter like infanticide, birth defects, home invasion, violence against Black people, and an incestuous mutant family.
To say it delved into taboos would be an understatement. This wouldn't be your average rerun: Fox withheld airing "Home" again for a full three years until October 1999, by which time the episode would be carrying the show's first and last TV-ma rating. "Only on Halloween ... would...

It's hard to imagine now but there was a time, back in the long-long-ago, when government conspiracies seemed kinda fun. Television shows like "The X-Files" assured us all that the government was up to something, but it was kinda cool stuff like extraterrestrial life forms, and something about bees? There were a bunch of bees at one point. It seemed like it made sense back in the 1990s.
Nowadays, quite a few episodes of "The X-Files" seem relatively quaint by modern standards of sci-fi/horror television, but there are also quite a few that still stand out. They weren't just smartly written, they weren't just creepily photographed, they were legitimately interesting, bizarre and — occasionally — even controversial.
But there's no episode of "The X-Files" that's nearly as disturbing, let alone violent, as the second episode of the show's fourth season. Entitled "Home," it was so visceral, so unsettling, that the episode...

The "Final Destination" series, originally conceived by James Wong, Glen Morgan, and Jeffrey Reddick, ingeniously subverted slasher movie expectations. In a post-"Scream" horror landscape, the slasher subgenre was waning. The first "Final Destination," released in 2000, reimagined the slasher villain as not a masked maniac, but the specter of Death himself. Spurned after a group of attractive teens ostensibly cheat death, he tracks them down one by one, inciting grisly Rube Goldberg machinations to reclaim the souls that cheated him.
Those deaths ultimately defined the series, imbuing it with an all-too-real sense of slasher nihilism. Ordinary, everyday objects and circumstances were rendered deadly, and each subsequent entry...

When we think of a horror franchise, the first image that comes to mind is likely a slasher film. But the 2000s brought a horror franchise with an even more relentless villain than all of the heavy hitters like Freddy, Jason, Chucky, and Leatherface combined. Directed by James Wong and based on an original story idea from Jeffrey Reddick, "Final Destination" ushered in the horror scene of the new millennium by pitting teenagers against the greatest enemy imaginable -- death itself. Wong, Reddick, and Glen Morgan worked together to write a story about Alex Browning, Clear Rivers, Carter Horton, Valerie Lewton, and the rest of the...

Released at the precipice of the 21st century, the first "Final Destination" film is totally indicative of what the following decade of mainstream horror films would come to offer: Gory kills, edgy cynicism, and not to mention a weirdly prescient fear of fiery plane tragedies. Interestingly enough, the film that started the death-obsessed franchise was first conjured as a spec script for the beloved Fox series "The X-Files." Perhaps this is unsurprising, considering "Final Destination" co-writers Glen Morgan and James Wong (who also directed the film) penned several "X-Files" episodes — including "Home," one of the best (and most grisly) episodes the series ever aired.

“Wong Fei-hung And The Criterion Treasure”
By Raymond Benson
What character in cinematic history has appeared in the most films? Our friend the Internet says that Sherlock Holmes holds the record, followed by Dracula. However, most people outside of Asia might not realize that possibly third on the list is a Chinese martial arts practitioner and physician named Wong Fei-hung, who was a real person who lived mostly in the Canton area from 1847-1925. Wong became a cultural folk hero in his native country, spawning literature, comics, television series, and many, many films.
Wong Fei-hung has been known in fictional settings as Huang Fei-hong, Huang Fei Hong, Wong Fei Hong, and in this recent series as Wong Fei-hung. The actor most associated with the character in China is Tak-Hing Kwan, who made over 75 films between the 1940s and 1980s. Kwan is to Wong Fei-hung as Sean Connery is to James Bond.

A project by producer Tsui Hark and director King Hu and a story taken from the wuxia novel “Xiao Ao Jiang Hu” which roughly translates as “Smiling Proudly in the Martial World” written by Jin Yong (Louis Cha). Anyhow, be it creative differences or sickness, Hu left the production and it was the ensemble of Ching Siu Tung, Raymond Lee, Tsui Hark himself and Ann Hui (uncredited) working together as acting directors to finish the job. Remember when awards shows were held in person and winners walked up to the stage to accept their trophies? Ahh, those were the days. One clip from the 1996 Screen Actors Guild ceremony (honoring work from 1995) is particularly fun to watch in retrospect as Gillian Anderson, current nominee for “The Crown,” is named the winner for “The X-Files.” The flummoxed actress takes her trophy, looks out at the hundreds of people in attendance and asks, “Where did you people come from?” Watch the SAG Awards flashback video above.

It’s the cast and creatives of The X-Files like you’ve never seen (or heard) them before. The group reunited recently to record a special version of the show’s previously instrumental-only theme song for a charity video benefiting the World Central Kitchen.

If you love the competitive spirit and friendly format of The Great British Baking Show, then it's time to get excited. Netflix is trading whisks for stem cutters and the giant tent for an epic greenhouse in its new series The Big Flower Fight.
The innovative competition show will feature 10 teams competing to design the most ornate floral bouquets and sculptures. The stakes are high: the winning team will have their creation on display at London's Royal Botanic Gardens!
The floristry series will include eight episodes hosted by comedians Vic Reeves (Coronation Street) and Natasia Demetriou (What We Do in the Shadows), with top florist Kristen Griffith VanderYacht serving as head judge. The floristry series will include eight episodes hosted by comedians Vic Reeves (Coronation Street) and Natasia Demetriou (What We Do in the Shadows), with top florist Kristen Griffith VanderYacht serving as head judge. A friendly ghost, a Dawson's Creek star and Stifler walk into an airport... No, that's not the set up for a bad '90s-themed joke, it's one of the opening scenes of Final Destination, with the horror movie celebrating its 20th anniversary. Released on March 17, 2000, Final Destination went onto become a surprise hit at the box office, with the film about a group of teens trying to avoid Death after cheating him by not getting on a doomed flight going on to gross over $110 million and kick start a five-film franchise. Initially pitched as an episode of The X-Files and directed by James Wong, the first Final Destination film brought together a bunch of the biggest stars in young...

The tenth chapter of American Horror Story is coming later this year, and there are some big names attached.
Series creator Ryan Murphy on Wednesday announced the full cast list for the forthcoming season, which will bring back Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters.
This will mark Macaulay Culkin's first season with the series.
Other Season 10 cast members include Kathy Bates, Leslie Grossman, Billie Lourd, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Adina Porter, Lily Rabe, Angelica Ross, and Finn Wittrock -- all Ahs veterans.
Paulson recently confirmed her return to the hit series earlier this year after sitting the entirety of American Horror Story Season 9 out.
Peters was also expected to return, given that Paulson previously stated that she would only return if he did.
Notably missing from the cast is Emma Roberts, but the actress could return in a guest role, given that production is yet to get underway.

Let’s get the big reveal out of the way first: I’m not very familiar with the Dragon Ball Z universe. I have some knowledge of the original Dragon Ball series from the 80s, but beyond that, I’m fairly clueless. I know some of the major beats, and I’m well aware of that dreadful live-action movie from Final Destination director James Wong, but beyond that, I’m a total Dragon Ball Z noob. And while I may not be the right person to review Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot from a fan’s perspective, I think my thorough enjoyment of the story, as well as the game’s hit-and-miss mechanics, proves that the game can appeal to those who want to experience Dragon Ball Z but don’t have the time and/or the fortitude to sit through dozens upon dozens of half-hour episodes.

I came of age (whatever that means) in the ’80s, so I’m always very interested in what Severin Films re-releases from that era; some I’ve seen and some I haven’t, and others I’ve never even heard of before. The two new releases from Severin I’ll be looking at today fit in that middle category—ones I know of very well, but yet remained unseen. Until now, that is; Severin has seen fit to load up the fantasy/actioner/softcore Gwendoline (1984) and the harrowingly violent The Boys Next Door (1985) with everything a viewer could want to know.
Gwendoline (1984): Otherwise known as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak, this film is goofy, immature, leering, and has stunning set design. Yes, it’s French; how’d you guess? It's a great day, American Horror Story Fanatics!
Fresh off the news that the series has scored a three-season renewal, Sarah Paulson has revealed she will be rejoining the cast for American Horror Story Season 10, airing later this year.
The actress appeared at the Television Critics Association Thursday to promote Mrs. America and ultimately dropped the bombshell that fans had been clamoring for.
“I did ask Ryan [Murphy] if the question was asked to me, could I say that I was coming back, and he said, ‘Yes, you could say.’ So, yes I will be back on American Horror Story,” Paulson revealed to Deadline.
The news is not particularly surprising, especially when you consider that Murphy previously teased he was rallying the troops for the tenth -- and potentially final season.
"It’s the last season we have contracted [at FX]. So, I’ve been quietly reaching out to various people," the co-creator told Deadline.

American Horror Story has been a monster hit for FX over the course of its time on the network. But now that the ninth season has come to a close and the tenth is gearing up to debut in the fall of 2020, with many fan favorite characters returning, too, fans have begun to worry that the horror anthology is getting ready to wind down. After all, it can’t possibly remain on the air forever, right? Well, maybe it can.
In news that perhaps isn’t too surprising – given how big of a success it’s been – Deadline is reporting today that FX has renewed American Horror Story for a further three seasons. This is on top of the upcoming run, meaning that once season 10 concludes, we’ll also be getting season 11, 12 and 13. If not more, should FX choose to keep it around.

American Horror Story is not going anywhere.
The venerable anthology series will enter its tenth season later this year, and despite rumors that it would be the final chapter, we now have confirmation that the series will continue for an additional three seasons.
FX has announced a multi-season renewal, which will take the show through to its 13th season.
There's no telling whether the 13th season will be the show's endgame, but there's something poignant about the series shutting down after 13 years.

FX is staying scary by renewing American Horror Story for a further three seasons.
This is on top of season ten of the Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk-created anthology series, which is set to air later this year.
The Disney-owned cable network has ordered installments 11, 12 and 13 of the series from 20th Century Fox Television. The deal was announced by John Landgraf, Chairman of FX Networks and FX Productions at the Winter TCA press tour.
This follows American Horror Story: 1984, the ninth season, which concluded in November, that was heavily influenced by slasher films such as Halloween and Friday The 13th.
Each season has explored a different horror theme and setting, ranging from a haunted house, insane asylum, witches coven, travelling freak show, to a hotel with a dark and murderous history. Murphy and Falchuk have not yet divulged the theme or setting for season ten but in an interview with Deadline last year,...

Now, as far as I can tell, everyone who traveled to Camp Redwood has some sort of terrible, dark secret they're just waiting to expose to the world, via action or confession, though they may not live long enough to see the repercussions of their actions fully wrought upon them.

If any author to have existed within our lifetime can lay claim to having a fair amount of their work adapted to cinema, it’s most definitely Stephen King. Granted, his books are amazing in their own right, but there’s something doubly cool about seeing them brought to life.
Of course, Mr. King is just like the rest of us when you get down to it, as he does enjoy taking in a good movie when he has the free time to spare. And when it comes to a mind such as his, it’s expected that folks be curious to learn which flicks he digs most.
Believe it or not, no less than 22 recommendations have been given by the legendary scribe in recent interviews. So without further ado, here they are:

New Line is bringing back one of its longest running and most successful horror franchises, Final Destination.
Let this be a lesson: Death never gives up.
New Line Cinema, now a subsidiary of WarnerMedia, is attempting to cheat death one more time and bringing back the Final Destination franchise. Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, writers of four of the Saw movies, will pen the script. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
The first Final Destination film debuted back in 2000 and told the story of a group of high school students who elect not to board a plane to Paris after one of them has a premonition the plane will explode mid-air and kill everyone aboard. The plane does explode. Unfortunately, Death having been cheated out of securing some souls does whatever it can to kill the remaining would-be plane explosion victims.
