The first live-action film adapted from the comic book “Teddy Boy” and written by Man Kai Ming, “Young and Dangerous” was a huge success and incredibly, within a few short months, its sequel hit the big screens. Again it became a massive hit which continued to generate more sequels and spin-offs.

By intercutting a series of flashbacks into the opening credits, director Lau is able to make his storyline flow smoothly and thus keeping his audiences up to date. Also by morphing the film's freeze frame image into the original comic, he ties in the storyline smoothly. What follows next also works as a prequel detailing Hung Hing society's “Chicken” Chiu's exile in Taiwan and how he becomes a branch triad leader of the local San Luen society.

Written by Man Kai Ming, nicknamed ”Cow Man”, and inked by main artist Lun Yu Kwok, ”Teddy Boy” was a very successful Hong Kong comic series about the life of the Hung Hing Society triad member Chan Ho Nam. "The cops may be able to trace us." "So what." Well Go USA has debuted another new official trailer for a Hong Kong action thriller film called I Did It May Way. That title seems to be an obvious reference to Frank Sinatra's classic song "My Way", though it isn't heard in the trailer or mentioned anywhere else, but it seems to connect with the bad guy's plot anyway. The film revolves around an undercover officer who goes up against the high-tech drug underworld of Hong Kong. Ho Sau, an undercover agent, has been working with Yau, a drug lord, for years, but his job and family are in trouble. The intense action thriller stars Andy Lau, Gordon Lam, Cya Liu, Eddie Peng, Kent Cheng, Philip Keung, with a special guest appearance by Simon Yam. This is an extraordinary violent trailer for what looks like an insanely violent Hk film - my goodness.

Update — 6:34 am Pst: Crucindo Hung, chairman of the Federation Of Motion Film Producers of Hong Kong, has told local press that Hong Kong’s Oscars submission, A Light Never Goes Out, was disqualified due to a conflict of interest.
Hung said he had changed the 13 members of the selection committee earlier this year after receiving a notice from AMPAS that members couldn’t vote if they’d been on the Federation’s board for more than six years. However, one of the new committee members is also an actor in the selected film. Detecting a conflict of interest, AMPAS asked Hong Kong to submit another film, but the invitation was declined.
Kyrgyzstan also declined an invitation to submit another film this year when the country’s Oscars submission, Aktan Arym Kubat’s This Is What I Remember, was disqualified because it was released before the required window of December 1, 2022 to October 31, 2023. However,...

"Where did the money come from?" Another official trailer has arrived for the Hong Kong film called The Goldfinger, which is exactly what is listed (in English) in the title card of this trailer. The film is also going under the title Once Upon a Time in Hong-Kong, written and directed by the filmmaker Felix Chong. Set in the 1980s, the film is based on the story of Carrian Group, a Hong Kong corporation which rose rapidly before collapsing shortly afterwards due to a corruption scandal. Acclaimed actors Tony Leung & Andy Lau reunite after the seminal Infernal Affairs years ago. When a stock market crash causes the sudden collapse of a multi-billion-dollar company, an Icac investigator (Lau) uncovers a criminal conspiracy involving the company’s founder (Leung) and becomes entangled in a long-running investigation. It’s been a long wait for The Goldfinger, which reunites Infernal Affairs stars Tony Leung and Andy Lau with writer-director Felix Chong: production began in February of 2021, our first look arrived spring 2022, and for some time it was all quiet on the eastern front. But a trailer this summer confirmed it’ll hit Hong Kong on December 30, and with only a month to go there’s a new, English-subbed preview that suggests the film will, at least for extravagance, have been worth the wait.
The thriller also stars Simon Yam, Philip Keung, Alex Fong Chung-sun, Charlene Choi, Chin Ka-lok, and Carlos Chan, and is inspired by the story of the Hong Kong conglomerate Carrian Group, which was embroiled in a scandal.
Set in the 1980s, the film depicts cut-throat machinations between Hong Kong’s jostling business elites amidst the backdrop of the tail end of British colonial rule.

Left alone after the sudden passing of her husband Bill (Simon Yam), Mei Heung (Sylvia Chang) fights insomnia by spending night after night feeding coins into the slot machines in an arcade game hall. She is one of the few customers in this large, neon lit room that had long lost its prime. This specific atmosphere draws parallels with the film's story that centers around the slowly dying neon sign artcraft of Hong Kong.

Neon lights have seldom been used as the backdrop of heart-warming dramas about love, solitude and longing, and more as the atmosphere-building coulisses for pulse-racing thrillers with dramatic outcomes. Anastasia Tsang takes the original approach in her drama “A Light Never Goes Out”, and makes the maximum out of Hong Kong's intensely colorful lights to create a dream-like world in which one woman finds her comfort and motivation to continue living.

1998, one year into the handover of Hong Kong to China and action cinema was beginning to shift. “The Storm Riders” was the first to really demonstrate CGI enhanced action. Jackie Chan was balancing Hollywood and Hong Kong and Jet Li was about to launch himself onto a wider audience as the villain in “Lethal Weapon 4”. With that in mind, he had one more vehicle for his local fanbase that year in “Hitman”. As Eureka Entertainment re-release it as part of their “Heroes and Villains” box set, it provides an opportunity to go back to revisit a work that has gotten a bit lost in the mix over the years.

Tony Leung and Andy Lau reunite in The Goldfinger, after many years apart. Here’s the trailer for the film, that arrives in the UK in December.
2002’s Infernal Affairs is one of the most iconic Hong Kong films of the early 2000s. The story of a cop who infiltrates the Triads and another officer who is secretly a spy for the same group was so popular that Martin Scorsese remade it in 2006 as The Departed. It also was followed by a couple of sequels, none of which were remade by Martin Scorsese.
Stars Tony Leung, Andy Lau and writer Felix Chong have reunited over 20 years later to make The Goldfinger, that Cine Asia has picked up for distribution in the UK.
The synopsis for The Goldfingerreads as follows:

Hong Kong cinema is associated with action films which most often bring to mind male protagonists. Most undeservedly so since, thanks to the characteristics of Hong Kong martial arts films, women have been successfully surmounting their male counterparts with training, agility, and wits in them for many decades. The masters, such as King Hu and Tsui Hark, were well-aware of it. They were among the ones who discovered outstanding artists whose roles were ahead of their times and set out new directions for the development of popular cinema.
Hong Kong is not just about action cinema, but also brilliant comedies and dramas, and sharp tales with social overtones, in which fascinating, complex female characters are also present. Tony Leung Chiu Wai is one of the most recognizable Asian actors in the world, chiefly through his collaborations with a number of master filmmakers, including Ang Lee, Hou Hsiao Hsien, John Woo and Wong Kar Wai. Leung, who also has a career as a pop singer, has been praised by audiences and critics for his ability to wonderfully portray a plethora of different roles, a skill stressed by the fact that he can fluently speak Cantonese, English and Spanish.

Reliably one of the most euphoric and rewarding events on the circuit, the New York Asian Film Festival emerged at a time when hardcore cinephiles were forced to import prohibitively expensive foreign-region DVDs if they wanted to watch the latest hits from the other side of the world, and the first editions of the fest — then hosted at the Anthology Film Archives — got a major boost by screening hard-to-find cult objects and/or future classics at a time when Chinese, Japanese, and South Korean cinema were all on the rise to one degree or another.
No disrespect to the prestigious New York Film Festival, but Nyaff beat them to the punch when it comes to major auteurs like Park Chan-wook, whose “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” screened at the 2002 event alongside millennial breakouts like Corey Yuen’s “So Close,” unheralded pop masterpieces like Fumihiko Sori’s “Ping Pong,” and what the fuck did I just witness?...

Tony Leung Chiu-wai. Andy Lau. Together in a new feature film. Who'd have thought we'd live to see the day?! Yet here we are, exactly 20 years since they were last seen together in “Infernal Affairs 3”, and director Felix Chong has managed the casting coup to bring together these two titans in his latest feature “The Goldfinger”.
Synopsis
Set in the 1980s, the film depicts cut-throat machinations between Hong Kong's jostling business elites amidst the backdrop of the tail end of British colonial rule. It tells the story of the rise and bust of a fictional Hong Kong company called Jiali Group, following the travails of its chairman Cheng Yiyan through 15 years of investigations by the Independent Commission Against Corruption as murders are committed, billions in market value evaporate and millions are spent on litigation fees.

“Cyber Heist,” a crime thriller directed by Hong Kong’s Wong Hing-fan (“I’m Livin’ It”) and scripted by Soi Cheang (aka Cheang Pou Soi), took the top spot at the mainland Chinese box office over the weekend.
It earned a very modest $6.2 million, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. But that was enough to win on the quietest weekend since January’s Lunar New Year holiday season.
“Cyber Heist” stars Aaron Kwok as a cyber security engineer who develops a state-of-the-art firewall that is capable of fending off online attacks against the global financial system. But he does not realize that in doing so he has stepped into a minefield that is even more dangerous. The picture also stars Lam Ka-tun and Simon Yam.

One titles is courtroom drama “A Guilty Conscience,” which follows the aftermath of a manslaughter case in which a barrister’s mistake lands his supermodel client in jail. The path to an appeal, however, seems like justice itself is on trial.

Korean filmmakers have produced some of today’s most cutting-edge movies by borrowing the best elements from Hollywood, Chinese, and Japanese cinema, and mixing them their own unique cultural vision. So when it comes to the action genre, K-films are all over the map. K-actioners range from irreverent comedies to gritty brutal ultraviolence. Story arcs move from funny to savage in the blink of an eye.
Always well-crafted, Korean action films are filled with clever plot twists, refreshing characters that are fully fleshed out, and superb cinematography, However, Korean cinema tends to defy being as easily pigeonholed into genre boxes as Western contemporaries.
For example, Park Chan-wook’s disturbing Cannes winner, Oldboy, is more of psychological thriller than an action film, and yet the brilliant one-er hallway hammer fight is consistently referenced as one of the top examples of fight choreography from that year. Snowpiercer, which spawned a TNT series,...

Much like the Prom Night series, or in martial arts cinema the later additions to the Police Story franchise, the Tiger Cage films don’t feature ongoing characters or tell linked stories. The only real tie is that they share cast members and are all martial arts cop movies directed by Yuen Woo-Ping.
The Films
Tiger Cage is about an anti-drug team in the Hong Kong Police force in which there may be corruption, with potentially several of the task force members working with and supplying dealers. Simon Yam plays the head of the unit, while Jacky Cheung, Carol ‘DoDo’ Cheng, Bryan Leung and Donnie Yen are among the detectives he commands. The tone is largely quite serious, and that’s the film’s main downfall, because it’s not something that Yuen Woo-Ping does especially well. In particular, he’s prone to letting his cast overact. They’re having fun,...

Throughout his career, the works of Johnnie To have always had a distinct European touch, especially those regarding gangsters, killers and heists, a blend of Eastern and Western influences you might say. Unsurprisingly, To himself had been toying with the idea to emphasize the connections in a future project, until he finally got the chance to do so from French producers Michèle and Laurent Pétin, who had been planning to collaborate with the filmmaker for quite some time. “Vengeance”, as their project was called, combines To’s sense of style, location and timing, especially regarding action scenes, but also tells a very interesting story about the overall point of revenge, and how it forever leaves a mark on people. The film would premier at Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and would go on to receive many favorable reviews, praising the performances and the direction, with some even calling it a masterpiece.

The Film
On first hearing the title, you might guess that this is a Hong Kong adaptation of the much-filmed Edgar Allan Poe story. It is, largely, an adaptation, but not of that. Writer/Director Stephen Shin apparently wanted to do a straight remake of Luc Besson’s Nikita, but the rights weren’t available (because they had already been sold in preparation for John Badham’s Bridget Fonda starring Point of No Return [Aka: The Assassin]). Shin made this instead. He makes some cosmetic changes, but in structure and many specifics, it remains very recognisable. You could say that Shin went from remake to ripoff in his concept of the film. Which isn’t to say it’s bad.
Former model Jade Leung debuts as Catherine, who kills a truck driver who tries to molest her, then the cop who comes to arrest her. As she’s taken to her trial,...

One of the most notorious Category III titles in the Hong Kong scene, Danny Lee and Bily Hin-Shing Tang’s celebrated true-life shocker of the life of Lam Kor-wan who murdered several women in Hong Kong in the early 1980s retains its shocks to this day. We’ve been fortunate to cover Fantasia multiple times over the years and it, along with Frightfest and Grimmfest, are staples of Nerdly’s genre festival coverage. What’s so great about Fantasia is the eclectic nature of the films they screen – new films, old films, international films, weird films, documentaries… Fantasia films run the gamut of genres, tastes and subject matter. And it’s now in its 25th(!) year of doing so!
With that in mind here are a few films that stood out to me from the announced schedule and, hopefully, a few we’ll get to bring you reviews of in the near future! You can also check out Alain’s preview of Fantasia right here.
Final Cut (Coupez!) After opening this year’s Cannes, Final Cut (Coupez!), Michel Hazanavicius’s riotous remake of Shinichirou Ueda’s One Cut Of The Dead, is coming to North America.

Yes, there are 10 now, with the latest one introducing the Young Ip Man, in a desperate effort to continue the franchise. Despite its evident downward spiral, though, the Ip Man series has presented a number of martial arts masterpieces through the years, which highlighted the prowess of individuals like Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, Wilson Yip and Yuen Woo Ping among others. Also of interest was the path Wong Kar Wai and Herman Yau took the life of Bruce Lee’s teacher, resulting in more artistic entries, while the inclusion of individuals like Mike Tyson, can only be perceived as a treat.
