CJ Barnes was born in Portland, OR and from an early age fostered a love and fascination with cinema and performing, joining local theatre productions as a child and continuing through his formative years. He attended Washington State University and continued to write and perform on a university produced variety show before transferring to Portland State University where he focused on his academics.
In 2007, CJ moved to Macau where his managed entertainment for the Venetian Macau. There he became involved in film and TV productions on both sides of the camera, including the Chinese production "Summer's Desire" (2010) and "The Breakup Club" (2010).
In 2017 CJ finally took his first plunge into his own filmmaking: writing, directing, and producing his first film, "Hunger - A Short Film". The film has been well received, garnering fifteen Official Selections, twelve award nominations, and five wins including Best Zombie Short in the Boobs & Blood International Film Festival 2018.
2019 saw the release of his second short, "Lost Property" into the festival circuit, which was selected eleven times and won one award for Best International Short.
As of 2021, CJ has released two more short films, "Age:Sex:Location" and "Call Waiting" for festival consideration.
