Emile Hirsch is intriguingly learning from J.K. Gavin Wiesen’s All Nighter is essentially a lo-fi indie take on Meet the Parents. In the Ben Stiller role is Emile Hirsch as Martin, a bearded, banjo playing La layabout whose shirts go perpetually un-ironed. Filling Robert De Niro’s shoes is J.K. Simmons as his girlfriend Ginnie’s (Analeigh Tipton) father, Mr. Gallo, a smartly suited alpha male whose job is carrying out suspiciously sinister sounding “procurement.”
First impressions are disastrous, with Mr. Gallo blankly dismissing the wimpy, awkward creature his daughter has attached herself to. Ginnie seems to come to her senses, too, as she breaks up with Martin soon after. This all makes it something of a surprise when, six months later, Mr. Gallo unexpectedly turns up at Martin’s front door.
Ginnie isn’t returning her father’s calls and so, fearing the worst, her father has returned to La to search for her, enlisting...

Before we get to see J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon in “Justice League,” he’ll do some investigating in the comedy “All Nighter.” The first trailer for the film introduces viewers to Simmon’s character Mr. Gallo, a globe-trotting businessman who goes in search of his missing daughter.
The clip begins with Simmons meeting his daughter Ginnie’s (Annaleigh Tipton) awkward boyfriend, Martin (Emile Hirsch), who plays the banjo and spills a drink all over him. Cut to six months later and he finds out Ginnie is missing after he visits her boyfriend’s place and discovers that she broke up with him. The story continues as the two go in search of her, forced to get along, but forming an unlikely friendship along the way.
The cast is rounded out by Taran Killam, Kristen Schaal, Jon Daly and Shannon Woodward. The film is directed by “The Art of Getting By...

Meeting your girlfriend’s father is always tough, especially if you’re Emile Hirsch, but especially if her father is a particularly intimidating J.K. Simmons. This trailer for Gavin Wiesen’s comedy All Nighter opens like that, but then it quickly dives into a comedic spin on Taken with the aforementioned girl going missing and Simmons enlisting Emile Hirsch’s whiny, ineffectual loser to help track her down. From there, Taran Killam shows up as a guy in a hat, people get punched, and a lady talks about a Tweet she just posted, all while Simmons has what appears to be a good amount of fun playing a grumpy badass—and he doesn’t even have to take anyone to the gun show to do it.
All Nighter will be available through on-demand services on March 24, 2017.

More J.K. Simmons is never a bad thing in my opinion, particularly when he's playing a terrifying bad-ass. After discovering that she's disappeared, he forces her awkward, nervous ex-boyfriend (Emile Hirsch), who is still... Read More...

"This is not a movie, this is life." The first trailer has debuted for an indie comedy titled All Nighter, the second feature from director Gavin Wiesen, who last directed a film titled Homework (which was retitled to The Art of Getting By). All Nighter stars J.K. Simmons as a workaholic father who decides to visit his daughter in La, only to discover she's missing. He find her ex-boyfriend and ends up searching for her with him. Emile Hirsch is the ex, a banjo-playing goofball. The full cast includes Analeigh Tipton, Kristen Schaal, Taran Killam and Stephanie Allynne. This looks like a wild night of fun, I just hope it's good. A trailer for an upcoming comedy called All Nighter just popped up online, and it looks like it could be a funny flick! The movie stars J.K. Simmons as a workaholic father who travels to Los Angeles to visit his daughter. When he gets there he discovers that she's disappeared. So what does he do? He is forced to awkwardly team up with her goofy banjo-playing ex-boyfriend to help him find her over the course of one transformative night. Her ex is played by Emile Hirsch.
Simmons and Hirsch are both talented actors, and it's fun to see them team up for a comedy like this. All Nighter was directed by Gavin Wiesen, and I hope that it actually turns out to be a decent comedy! The movie is set to be released in select theaters and on VOD on March 17th.

This week saw a number of sad losses in the entertainment industry. The singers of both “Louie Louie” and “Stand by Me” passed away this week, as well as Oscar-nominated screenwriter Don Mankiewicz, who was nominated for I Want to Live! Mankiewicz was the son of Herman J. Mankiewicz (Citizen Kane) and the nephew of Joseph L. Mankiewicz (All About Eve), and the father of John Mankiewicz (House of Cards). He was 93.
But perhaps most shocking was the loss of cinematographer Andrew Lesnie, who died suddenly this week at just 59 years old. Lesnie won an Oscar for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and he subsequently filmed all five of the remaining Lotr films and Peter Jackson’s King Kong and The Lovely Bones. Some of his more interesting credits are his work on Babe and Babe: Pig in the City. Lesnie’s last film however...

Red State; Bluebeard; 30 Minutes or Less; The Art of Getting By; The British Guide to Showing Off
There are few spectacles more unedifying than that of a director who knows they have made a lousy film blaming critics for their failure. When Kevin Smith's Cop Out was justifiably trashed by critics, the director had the gall to liken the reviews for his lame, lazy Bruce Willis vehicle to the playground bullying of a "retarded kid'" (his words, folks). Yet for proof that Smith knew that he had sold out, one need look no further than Red State (2011, Entertainment One, 18), a low-budget throwback to the indie-spirited glory days of Clerks that marks a sparky – if haphazard – return to form. Believe me, no one who could make a film as ballsy as Red State could be under any illusions about the dreadful balderdash of Cop Out.

The Art Of Getting By
Stars: Freddie Highmore, Emma Roberts, Michael Angarano, Alicia Silverstone | Written and directed by Gavin Wiesen
If you’re a fan of a genre, you can forgive an awful lot of a film’s shortcomings. Personally, despite being old enough to know better, I really like coming of age dramas (The Ice Storm, Adventureland, Almost Famous, etc). As such, I was predisposed to get a kick out of The Art of Getting By. The question is, will those not enamoured with tales of teenage boys learning about life and love enjoy it as much?
Freddie Highmore – a veteran of kid films such asSpiderwick Chronicles, Astro Boy, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and others – stars as George, a teen so nihilistic he sees no point in doing any work at his school, despite his intelligence and talent for art, much to the frustration of his teachers. Films about teenagers exploring existential truths while floating between the lines of society of sanity can go one of two ways. Either they’re nostalgic romps reminding all of us how emotionally confusing that time can be or they’re the clichéd sewage of a writer saying everything they wish they had the wherewithal to say back then but couldn’t articulate until ten years later. The former view of those formative years actually holds water, because any teenager claiming to have all the answers by age 18 is just a deluded kid whose every trite, overly self-aware word doesn’t actually exist. Those teenagers are fictional. It’s one thing to have them say those things, it’s another for them to understand the gravity of what it all means. The Art of Getting By insists on giving the audience one of those know-it-all teenagers, letting him dig his own...

Let's pile on one last time and let that be the end of it as I now present my personal top ten list of the Worst Movies of 2011. As I noted in Part One yesterday, I didn't see all of the films many are calling the worst of the year, films such as Jack and Jill, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, I Don't Know How She Does It, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, Beastly and Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star. I did, however, see my fair share of duds and of those I saw, these are the ten that top that list. If you missed Part One, that's where I essentially list my Dishonorable Mentions and I will link to it again at the end of this piece. For now, let's dive into the sewer and see what we find amidst the sludge. 10. Hobo with a Shotgun...

Chicago – Poor George Zinavoy. He’s been cursed with striking good looks, remarkable artistic talent, a dedicated mentor and a gorgeous woman who clearly desires to have sex with him. Thankfully, nothing appears to have gotten in the way of his stubborn pessimism, comfortable apathy and belief in the meaningless of existence. How can George be expected to care about his homework when he’s too busy contemplating his mortality?
For that matter, how can audiences be expected to care about such an unsympathetic, oddly soulless Holden Caulfield clone? He goes through the usual existential motions with all the urgency and conviction of a sleepwalker. As played by baby faced, moist-eyed Freddie Highmore, George registers as a mopey bore rather than a fatalist. Highmore’s genial sweetness lacks the raw edge and rebellious spirit that the character desperately needed in order to be the least bit credible.

Who’S It For? Mopey high school students.
Movie:
George (Highmore) is intelligent (we know this because he’s always reading) and rich (though not as rich as some classmates, so that’s supposed to make him relatable) but despite getting the kind of education and chances that many kids dream of, he skips classes, ignores homework, and generally behaves like he’s above it all. Emma Roberts and Freddie Highmore ponder the possibilities in The Art of Getting By.
The Art of Getting By is a coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama film starring Emma Roberts (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) and Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) set against the backdrop of very beautiful New York City.
The movie spins the tale of George (Highmore), a lonely and fatalistic high school teen who’s made it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work, and Sally (Roberts), a popular but complicated gal who recognizes in him a kindred spirit. Might there be love in the air? Or maybe just a deep friendship and mutual respect?

Gavin Wiesen's The Art of Getting By (2011) is a coming-of-age rom-com starring Freddie Highmore and Emma Roberts. The film follows George (Highmore), a teenage misanthrope who has never done a day's work in his life. George is bright, but fails to see why he should bother with school, homework or any other form of work. One thing he does enjoy however is art, yet even this isn’t tempting enough to jolt him out of apathy until he draws the attention of the beautiful Sally (Roberts).

"There are 6.8 billion people on the planet, 60 million die every day..." begins The Art Of Getting By, Gavin Wiesen's coming-of-age debut as writer/director. Our bleak narrator is George, a school senior who has coasted along, doing the bare minimum; Believing the depressing philosophy "We live alone, we die alone - everything else is just an illusion", George sees little point in doing homework when there are better things to do with his time.
As graduation approaches, the staff at Morgan School are no longer willing to turn a blind eye and George's concerned mum offers him a tutor. It's only when he accidentally meets Sally (Emma Roberts) smoking on the school roof that George realizes there is something to live for. With three weeks to do one year's worth of assignments in order to graduate with a diploma, apathetic George must dig deep inside to find an "honest and fearless" final art piece.

If coming-of-age, indie-styled films of late will have us believe, every white, privileged school kid is a volatile mass of unresolved angst and superior intellect, waiting to explode on an uncaring, uncompromising world around them. Debut feature writer-director Gavin Wiesen has joined the ‘cool kids’ gang of film-makers, championing the secretly chic and misunderstood nerds with his new drama, The Art Of Getting By, starring a grown-up (and seriously malnourished-looking) Freddie Highmore of The Spiderwick Chronicles and Finding Neverland fame.
As George Zinavoy, Highmore is a lonely and fatalistic NYC teen who’s (somehow) managed to make it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work. He finally befriends another being on the school rooftop called Sally (Emma Roberts), a popular but complicated girl who recognises in him a kindred spirit.

Chicago – The angst ridden, doom-and-gloom adolescent has been fodder for the movies ever since teenagers were invented. From James Dean to “Heathers,” the juvenile anti-hero trying to figure out life has lit up the screen. Freddie Highmore takes his turn in “The Art of Getting By.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
This is Holden Caulfield (”Catcher in the Rye”) territory, because the setting is New York City among the upper middle class, private school types. While the character of George Zinavoy (Highmore) can never reach the rarified fatalism of Mr. Caulfield, his questioning of existence does have a mordant perversion. And although the film makes some bad “happy ending” decisions, for the most part it exposes the subject matter in an interesting manner.
George Zinavoy is in his senior year at a college prep New York City academy. He barely can tolerate school, and sits in his classes moodily drawing unique images in a sketchbook.
