The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) will announce its nominations on Wednesday, Jan. 15, casting a spotlight on an unpredictable awards season. This year’s nods come amid a somber backdrop as the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles have left communities grappling with loss. I’m sure the BAFTA’s announcement will mention the City of Angels and the first responders, the true heroes battling the blazes.
For the approximately 13,500 international members of BAFTA — representing a diverse range of disciplines across film and television — this year’s nominations serve as a cultural barometer, often influencing the Oscar race. With ballots for the Academy Awards due on Friday, Jan. 17, following its announced voting extension, BAFTA (who voted before the wildfires broke out) may provide a clearer picture of where AMPAS’ influential international voting bloc will likely land.

Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón may have walked away with wins to celebrate at the Golden Globes earlier this month, but she had another prized moment take place that night offstage.
While visiting The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actress, who expressed how much she’s part of the Star Wars fandom, recalled meeting Harrison Ford on the Globes red carpet, a moment she said got really emotional.
“I met Harrison Ford the other night after the Golden Globes. I was really surprised by the words that he said to me,” Gascón said. “It was wonderful. It was an honor. The fact that we were able to hug, because I was going to say, ‘Harrison Ford, you’re my hero,’ and he told me, ‘There are no heroes here.'”

One month ago, we asked Gemini AI for Oscar predictions, and it endorsed Gladiator II as a contender for picture, director (Ridley Scott), and supporting actor (Denzel Washington). Well, Google’s artificial intelligence bot has rebooted, and it now believes the mixed-reviewed sequel will be mostly forgotten come Oscars time. In fact, Gemini’s current picks in the six main categories align much more closely with Gold Derby’s overall choices.
You can see Gemini’s forecasted nominations below, where The Brutalist, a period piece about a Holocaust survivor who’s trying to live the American Dream, is expected to clean up with bids for picture, director (Brady Corbet), actor (Adrien Brody), supporting actress (Felicity Jones), and supporting actor (Guy Pearce). Meanwhile, Anora, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez are expected to nab four noms apiece in the six main races.

Bollywood Mascot: Karla Sofía Gascón, the talented actor starring in the upcoming movie Emilia Perez, has opened up about receiving death threats online. Despite the negativity, Gascón remains unfazed, sharing a bold and inspiring perspective that resonates with her fans.
In a recent interview, Gascón revealed that online hate, including death threats, has become an unfortunate part of her experience. However, instead of letting the negativity break her, she uses it as fuel to move forward. “I love it, it’s my gasoline,” she said, emphasizing her determination to rise above the hate.

Karla Sofía Gascón is making waves with her role in Emilia Pérez, a film that has earned her major recognition and backlash. She plays a former Mexican drug lord named Manitas who transitions into Emilia, a woman starting a new life.
Her portrayal has been praised, but the hate she receives online is just as loud. Many of the messages are filled with threats, insults, and transphobia. Despite this, Gascón embraces the negativity, saying it fuels her drive in an interview for The Hollywood Reporter.
She feels it only adds to her motivation to keep going, even if it means being public enemy number one for some people.
The movie is gaining momentum, and there’s strong speculation she’ll be nominated for an Oscar—something that could make her the first openly transgender actress to win. It’s not just her acting that stands out, but the film itself,...

Karla Sofía Gascón reads the hate. All of it. Alongside the flood of praise for her lead performance in the late-breaking Oscar favorite Emilia Pérez, a steady trickle of vitriol has flowed in the gutters of social media. When we meet in her native Madrid, Gascón takes out her phone to show me messages she has screenshotted and marked up. “I hope you die before you make another movie,” spewed one X user. After beloved Spanish actress Marisa Paredes passed away a few days before our interview, another anonymous online wit mused, “I wish you could have died instead of her.” She’s also received death threats in Mexico, where Emilia Pérez is set and where she has spent much of her professional life: “I was told I would be found dismembered in a bag.”

Since its release, Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language crime musical, “Emilia Pérez” has outpaced expectations to become a critical favorite, garnering high praise from top-tier directors and so far making impressive showings at the season’s big award ceremonies in Europe and the U.S. But in Mexico, where the musical will premiere later this month, audiences reacting to clips of the film and industry professionals have been vocal about their disapproval of the film about a ruthless cartel lord who undergoes a dramatic gender transformation.
Many of these critics, and like-minded ones in the U.S., have accused “Emilia Pérez,” which stars Karla Sofía Gascón as the titular antihero, of portraying Mexico through a regressive and stereotyping lens. Blame has been heaped on Audiard for making the film in a language he doesn’t speak — though, it’s far from the “Dheepan” director’s first go at a foreign tongue...

When the actor known as “Russia’s Timothée Chalamet” attended the Gotham Awards last month, he never expected to come face-to-face with the real Timothée Chalamet. “It was such a crazy thing,” says “Anora” star Mark Eydelshteyn of meeting the Gotham Awards’ Visionary Tribute honoree. “I know many amazing actors, but they’re very far from me. You know it and you love it, right? Emilia Perez is likely the best comedy/musical/drama that has come out over the last year, and thankfully, we get to see it on Netflix. The movie won four Golden Globe awards recently, including Best Comedy or Musical Film. Zoe Saldaña won as well for Best Supporting Actress. But the film is likely not done winning awards, either.
This week, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards were announced and Emilia Perez received several nods. SAG-AFTRA does not really announce a "best film," but they do "best cast," which means that many times a film is nominated at the SAGs, it also has a very good chance of being nominated for Academy Awards.

Coming into a new year usually brings clarity. But when it comes to the Oscar race — to quote novelist William Goldman — nobody knows anything. Academy Award nominations will be announced Jan. 17 and voting is currently underway. Judging by the Golden Globe Awards Sunday, a number of winners have brought their possible Oscar nominations into focus. But at the end of the day, how reliable are precursors anyway? After all, we all know the Oscars do their own thing. So, without being influenced by other voting parties, here’s a guess at where the race seems to stand.

The Directors Guild Awards, which includes assistant directors and production managers in its voting body, tends to go more mainstream and American than the Oscars’ more tony and international-leaning Directors Branch. Thus, the international DGA nominees Jacques Audiard (Netflix’s European Film Awards and Golden Globes Musical winner “Emilia Pérez“) and Edward Berger (Focus’ “Conclave”) are likely repeats at the Oscars, along with SAG acting nominees Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, and Ralph Fiennes.
Among the international directors, French-Canadian Denis Villeneuve was expected to land a DGA spot for desert epic “Dune: Part Two.” Why didn’t he, after landing a DGA nomination for “Part One”? It’s possibly because “Part Two” is perceived as a sequel, and even though it winds up a two-part story, because a third “Dune” film is in the offing, voters may wait for the finale.

The SAG Awards’ 2025 nominations have not made an already up-in-the-air Oscar race much clearer.
While there was much anticipation that “Wicked” would fare well with the voting body composed of Screen Actors Guild members, star Jonathan Bailey being nominated for Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture is not something that was on too many people’s radars.
Even more of a curveball are the nominations for “The Last Showgirl” stars Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis, even if hindsight being 20/20, it has been evident how well liked the pair are by their peers. Remember, the SAG Awards are what teed up Curtis to win her Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” in what was a close race between her, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Angela Bassett, and “The Banshees of Inisherin” breakout Kerry Condon.
All of this is to say, while the rest of the...

Netflix has canceled “The Night Agent” Season 2 premiere in New York City scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 14. “In light of the current crisis in Los Angeles, the red carpet has been canceled,” the streamer said in a statement.
The Los Angeles premiere of “Taking Care,” a 38-minute documentary about Lauren Miller Rogen and Seth Rogen navigating the challenges of Lauren’s mother’s early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, on Jan. 21 has been postponed.
On Monday, a one-night only concert presentation of “Little Shop of Horrors” starring Joel Kim Booster, Shea Couleé and Alex Newell set for Friday at Catch One was canceled. The event was to benefit The Ali Forney Center, the nation’s largest provider of shelter and wraparound services dedicated to homeless LGBTQ+ youth.

A whopping 21* performers received their first individual Screen Actors Guild Awards bids on Wednesday morning, including some famous faces we’ve been seeing onscreen for years.
The nominations list for the 2025 SAG Awards is led by Wicked for film and Shōgun for television, both with five overall bids. The first-time nominees from these projects are Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey for the former, and Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Anna Sawai for the latter.
Pamela Anderson, Demi Moore, and Harrison Ford are some of the biggest Hollywood names to finally be individually recognized at SAG, for their performances in The Last Showgirl, The Substance, and Shrinking, respectively. (Moore was previously nominated as a member of the ensemble of the 2006 film Bobby.) All three actors also contended at the 2025 Golden Globes, with Moore prevailing in the comedy/musical lead category and jump-starting her Oscar narrative.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are always good for a significant surprise or two, and this year’s SAG Awards nominations were no different. On Wednesday, as the Screen Actors Guild announced its contenders for 2025 honors in film and television, several big names were rewarded — including Wicked, A Complete Unknown, and Emilia Perez — while some were left ignominiously behind. Ahead, the biggest snubs and surprises at this year’s SAG Awards.
Snub: Angelina Jolie (Maria) in Best Actress
Jolie’s Oscar candidacy has taken some serious hits over the last several days, and her snub by the Screen Actors Guild is the latest tough blow following her BAFTA Awards longlists omission and loss at the Golden Globes. The Maria star can still receive an Oscar nomination, of course – the BAFTA Awards and SAG Awards similarly snubbed Kristen Stewart, but she was still ultimately an Oscar nominee. The 31st annual SAG Awards have been announced via official press release, with “Wicked” and “Shōgun” leading film and TV nominations, respectively, with five nominations each.
On the film side, “A Complete Unknown” and “Emilia Pérez” had the second best hauls with four nominations each. Same goes for “The Bear” on the TV side, which also earned four nominations. In terms of individual nominees, the Screen Actors Guild feted many surprise nominees, from “The Last Showgirl” stars Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis both being nominated, to Jonathan Bailey getting in for “Wicked,” and Kathy Bates becoming a double nominee this year for her roles in “Matlock” and “The Great Lillian Hall.”
In addition to the slate of nominees, actress and activist Jane Fonda will be at the ceremony to receive SAG-AFTRA‘s highest tribute, the SAG Life Achievement Award.

We should have a handle on the Academy Awards race now, right? The new year is upon us, the Golden Globes have already happened, the critics groups have chimed in and Oscar voting begins on Wednesday and runs through Sunday evening, ending sometime in the middle of the Critics Choice Awards.

So here are a few things worth keeping in mind about this season as it marches toward the Jan. 17 announcement of Oscar nominations and, eventually, the Academy Awards on March 2.

It’s not unusual to see an acceptance speech at an awards show fall prey to the lure of oversharing. What’s less common is to see a speech that reveals more than it says out loud. But that’s just what happened on Sunday night when the filmmakers and stars of “Emilia Pérez” took to the stage to accept the Golden Globe award for best motion picture — comedy or musical.
The film’s director, Jacques Audiard, had already spilled his guts earlier that night in an awkwardly translated, rather endless speech he made to accept the award for best foreign-language film. Now Audiard, looking like an aging golfer in his pork-pie hat, was out of words. “Clearly, I’ve not prepared anything,” he said through a translator. In what seemed a spontaneous gesture, he motioned his lead performer, the trans actress Karla Sofía Gascón, to come forward, and she...

“Emilia Pérez” is a musical drama movie written and directed by Jacques Audiard. It stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, and Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz. It is based on the novel by Boris Razon.
In the ever-evolving landscape of cinema, “Emilia Pérez” emerges as a daring opus that defies conventional categorization. Director Jacques Audiard’s latest creation is a cinematic cocktail that blends the whimsy of musicals with the grit of social realism, resulting in a film that’s as thought-provoking as it is entertaining.
At its core, “Emilia Pérez” tells the story of a drug lord’s audacious plan to escape his past: gender reassignment surgery and a faked death.
