- Columnist and reporter for The Washington Star newspaper and, after its demise, The Washington Post.
- Won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for her commentary on the Watergate hearings. Her name was on Richard Nixon's list of "White House enemies" which was made public in 1973.
- After attending secretarial school, McGrory became an editorial assistant at Houghton Mifflin publishing house. She was hired by the Washington Star newspaper as a book reviewer. Her first "hard news" assignment was covering the Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954. The Star syndicated her column to prevent the Washington Post from luring her away.
