Plot: Ella Blake is a stop-motion animator who is struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother. Suddenly alone in the world, she embarks upon the creation of a macabre new puppet film, which soon becomes the battleground for her sanity.
Review: Every year, during the barren months of January and February, there’s always some horror movie that comes along and stuns. Last year had Infinity Pool, and 2024 has Stopmotion. Just like the former, the latter is a mind-bending, horrific experience. The melding of stop-motion animation with horror is the perfect pairing. But it’s the story of a young girl slowly going insane that will stick with you long after the credits roll.
Aisling Franciosi is absolutely incredible as Ella Blake, a young woman obsessed with animation. But her mother is so overbearing that she’s never really able to explore her own creative side.

While 2024 hasn't kicked off the way 2023 did in terms of massive horror releases in the first quarter, it looks as though Robert Morgan's debut film, Stopmotion, is the first great horror film of the year. Known mostly for his short films and his memorable stop-motion-animated segment of The ABC's of Death 2, Morgan and IFC films combined their powers to create an unsettling blend of live-action and stop-motion horror. Stopmotion was written by Morgan and Robin King, and stars Aisling Franciosi from Jennifer Kent's The Nightingale, Stella Gonet (Spencer), Tom York (Poldark), and Caoilinn Springall (The Midnight Sky).
Stopmotion follows Ella Blake (Franciosi), a young stop-motion artist, who, alongside her abusive and obsessive mother Suzanne, works day and night to finish her mother's movie before she's taken by a sickness. Juggling her past familial trauma and current demons, Ella stops the project when her mother falls too ill to work on it,...

Up next from actress Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale, Last Voyage of the Demeter) is the horror movie Stopmotion, which sees an artist fighting for her sanity with her morbid creations.
Stopmotion releases in theaters on February 23 before heading to Shudder on May 31, 2024.
Directed by Robert Morgan, the film stars Franciosi as Ella Blake, “a stop-motion animator who is struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother. Suddenly alone in the world, she embarks upon the creation of a macabre new puppet film, which soon becomes the battleground for her sanity. As Ella’s mind starts to fracture, the characters in her animated film take on a terrifying life of their own, and the unleashed power of her imagination threatens to destroy her.”

English animator Robert Morgan has deservedly accrued a shelf of awards over the past quarter-century or so for shorts like “The Cat With Hands,” “The Separation” and ickily awesome “Bobby Yeah.” Their macabre, surreal nightmares are at once threatening and oddly winsome, with a sinister aesthetic equally redolent of the Brothers Quay, early David Lynch and the painter Francis Bacon — all of whom count among the director’s admitted influences.
He’s been in no hurry to adopt a longer format, and his first feature underlines the wisdom of that reluctance. Not unprecedented among his work in its mix of animated and live-action elements, “Stopmotion” demonstrates the difficulty in stretching such a singular, fantastical sensibility to suit a full-length project’s storytelling requirements.
This “Repulsion”-like tale of a fragile young woman’s descent into madness, starring “The Nightingale’s” Aisling Franciosi, arrests attention with its vivid, escalating eruptions of grotesque imagination.

Stopmotion releases February 23, 2024.
Personally, of all the diverse existing animation styles, stop motion has always been one of the most fascinating. In fact, one of my highest ratings this century belongs to a stop-motion film, Kubo and the Two Strings. If this fact alone would catch my attention, mixing this type of animation with horror, also one of my favorite genres, sets expectations at a clearly higher level. Stopmotion marks the feature debut of filmmaker Robert Morgan, who also co-writes the script with Robin King (Mnemophrenia), and stars Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale).
Franciosi plays Ella Blake, a stop-motion animator who gradually begins to lose control of her life when her mother, a filmmaker and master of her art, finds herself unable to finish her last movie, placing the responsibility on Ella to complete her work. When a nameless little girl appears and offers ideas on how to improve the story,...

Horror often presents a literal interpretation of artists giving themselves over to their art, whether through supernatural suffering or psychological unraveling. Stopmotion, the feature directorial debut by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker/animator Robert Morgan, chooses the latter. While it may adhere to a familiar path of an artist’s unraveling, Morgan finds inventive and creative ways to mine visceral horror through the uncanny, unsettling nature of stop-motion animation and its painstaking process.

Horror is meant to be fun. This is a truth that non-horror people don’t quite understand. You want a movie that scares you, but you want to walk away with a case of the willies that makes you shiver in a very specific way.

For me, 2020 was already a rather stressful year before the Covid lockdowns went into effect for reasons unrelated to the pandemic. Even as misfortunes both personal and professional piled up throughout the months that followed, the virus, funnily enough, was never directly to blame for my woes. Not that I can really complain; I certainly had a far easier go of it in 2020 than other people, especially when it came to my mental health. My years of working remotely and being a borderline hermit were finally paying off!
You could say my experience was a bit like George Clooney's in "The Midnight Sky." Clooney, who also directed the 2020 film, stars as Augustine Lofthouse, a scientist, and the lone person holed up at an Arctic research station that's been evacuated in the wake of a mysterious global catastrophe that's left most of the Earth's surface uninhabitable in the year 2049. Amazon Prime Video’s deeply ambitious, globe-hopping spy series Citadel has now been renewed for a second season. And Avengers: Endgame and The Gray Man director Joe Russo is all set to helm every episode. Led by Game of Thrones and Eternals star Richard Madden and The Matrix Resurrections star and Bollywood icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Citadel was met with decidedly mixed reviews upon release but managed huge viewing figures, becoming Prime Video’s fourth most-watched original series worldwide.
“Citadel is a truly global phenomenon,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon and MGM Studios, said of bringing Citadel back for another mission. “Our goal was always to create a new franchise rooted in original IP that would grow Prime Video’s international audience. This show has drawn an outsize number of new international customers to Prime Video. Its massive worldwide debut audience is a testament to Joe and Anthony Russo’s remarkable vision,...

Since it was announced several years back, I’ve found Amazon’s Citadel to be conceptually interesting.
In a television marketplace in which international territories are more important than ever and the landscape is glutted with IP-driven franchise plays, the idea of pre-franchising an original idea and instantly building brand fungibility with different foreign spinoffs is enticing, albeit meaninglessly jargon-filled.
Of course, it’s easy to get conceptually interested in something when you don’t know the actual concept — and having seen half of what ended up being a six-episode first season for Citadel, I will say that sustained interest is harder to come by.
If you’ve followed industry reporting and scuttlebutt related to a burgeoning budget, showrunner changes and extensive reshoots, you might expect Citadel to be some sort of disaster, all mismatched pieces and jagged narrative edges. It isn’t. Instead, whatever its initial ambition happened to be,...

Citadel is Amazon’s upcoming spy drama that’s gathering plenty of attention thanks to its all-star cast and fascinating premise. The series is set to be released on Prime Video, with six exciting episodes confirmed for its first season. Not only is the show being produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously gathered a huge amount of fame for their direction and writing on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, but it also ranks among Amazon’s most expensive projects to date (via Business Insider), with grand production design and many exciting locations.
Interestingly, Citadel already has several spin-off projects in development that will expand this fictional universe and create a legacy unlike anything Prime Video has ever managed before. It’s being produced in cooperation with local film industries in several different countries (via Evening Standard), with the Italian version already filmed and several others in the pre-production stage.

"Right now, every agent around the world is looking for you two." Amazon has debuted a second trailer for their international spy series called Citadel, from the creators of the series "Zoo" before. Looks like it might be highly entertaining. A dash of sci-fi added into the mix of this Mission: Impossible-esque concept. Global spy agency Citadel has fallen, and its agents' memories were wiped. Now the powerful syndicate, Manticore, is rising in the void, planning to establish a New World Order. Can the Citadel agents recollect their past and summon the strength to fight back? The high concept streaming event is described as an "action-packed spy series with a compelling emotional center" made by Amazon Studios and the Russo Brothers' Agbo. Richard Madden stars as Mason Kane, Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Nadia Sinh, Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville, Osy Ikhile, Ashleigh Cummings, Roland Møller, Davik Silje, Caoilinn Springall, and many others.

Prime Video’s “Citadel” is the most ambitious (and most expensive) new action series of the year. The trailer for Joe and Anthony Russo’s globetrotting espionage thriller promises a vast conspiracy that goes all the way to the top, spy vs. spy romantic tension, and a chase scene on skis that shows Richard Madden doesn’t need to be the next James Bond to do James Bond-style stuff.

Prime Video released the first trailer for the Russo Brothers’ international spy series “Citadel,” starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, offering up a mix of “Bourne Identity” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” with a global twist.
The high-stakes thriller picks up eight years after the fall of international spy agency Citadel, which fell to operatives of the shadowy syndicate Manticore. Though top agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) were able to escape with their lives, they had their memories wiped in the process and began entirely new lives.
But the past returns when a former Citadel agent Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci) recruits Kane to stop Manticore from establishing a new world order. After retrieving Nadia, they set out on a dangerous mission to confront Manticore and a relationship built on secrets, lies and love.

Citadel, the hotly anticipated new series from Avengers: Endgame directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo, has had its official trailer release delayed. The Russos are executive producing the spy series, which is set to premiere with its first two episodes on Prime Video on April 28. The series was created by Josh Appelbaum & Bryan Oh, who previously collaborated on Happy Town, October Road, Life on Mars, and the James Patterson adaptation Zoo.
On Wednesday, the planned release of the Citadel trailer was delayed. Per Deadline, the reason for this was the deadly train collision in Greece that led to 36 deaths and many more injuries. The teaser, which features a prominent sequence set on a train, was delayed in solidarity with those mourning the loss of loved ones. Read Prime Video's statement to the press below:

It is unclear what exactly the contents of the trailer are but is believed to take place (at least in part) on a train as suggested by the recently released first-look images of stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden that feature them in a luxury dining car.
“Out of respect for our international community and due to yesterday’s devastating breaking news from Greece, we are respectfully holding on sharing the official trailer for Citadel,” Prime Video said in a note to reporters covering the series Wednesday morning ahead of the trailer’s scheduled release.

George Clooney is the definition of timeless, which is why it’s hard to believe the Hollywood superstar will be turning 60 in May. But before that, on March 28, Clooney will receive the AARP Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Award at a virtual ceremony to be broadcast on PBS.
Clooney is an ideal fit for many reasons, perhaps most perfectly articulated by AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins: “He personifies aging with grace by proving that, with smarts and hard work, even the most extraordinary talent can improve with time. He is a slam-dunk argument against ageism.”
Clooney graced the cover of the February-March AARP Magazine, in which he joked the headline should read: “Sexiest Man Still Alive.” He also said of getting older, “I always say to my dad, ‘I’m middle-aged.’ And he goes, ‘You know a lot of 120-year-olds?’”
The honor comes on the heels of Clooney’s seventh film as a director,...

On Sunday, the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards hosted by Taye Diggs took place on a virtual and in-person stage with Nomadland and The Crown walking away with numerous accolades.
Nomadland won the biggest prize of Best Picture while filmmaker Chloe Zhao snatched trophies for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Netflix’s The Crown continues its streak as Gillian Anderson won for Best Supporting Actress for Drama for her turn as Margaret Thatcher. Meanwhile, Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin won for Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series, respectively.
It was very noticeable that, right off the bat, the Critics Choice Awards were more inclusive than the Golden Globes with its winners — and nominees for that matter. In addition to Zendaya being honored with the SeeHer award, Daniel Kaluuya added more momentum to his awards season run as he won for Best Supporting Actor in Judas and the Black Messiah.

George Clooney and newcomer Caoilinn Springall star in the new Netflix film “The Midnight Sky.” The film just earned the distinction of being named one of the National Board of Review’s top 10 films of 2020.
Clooney and Springall recently spoke with Gold Derby senior editor Joyce Eng about how the latter star got cast, how Covid affected the post-production process and the one thing each of them would take to space if they could. Watch the exclusive webchat above and read the complete transcript below.

Gold Derby: I loved your guys’ relationship and rapport in this film and this is Caoilinn’s first movie. George, I’ll start with you. At what point during the audition did you know that Caoilinn was the one?
George Clooney: She was the last person we saw. We read a couple hundred young actresses and they...

When George Clooney approached Alexandre Desplat about scoring “The Midnight Sky,” he told him right off the bat that he would have to write more music that he ever has before for a film. “When a director says something like that, you always think maybe it’s a fantasy and you’re going to be able to escape the iceberg that’s coming towards you with this huge amount of music to write,” Desplat tells Gold Derby (watch above). “But he was right. From the script to the film, there’s a big gap, and I wasn’t sure the movie would be as silent as it is now and that music would convey the emotions, the dangers that the characters are experiencing. But yes, he was right, and I had to compose a lot of minutes of music.”
It was about 90 minutes total and all of it made it into the Netflix film.

Multiple Oscar winner George Clooney returns to space in Netflix's The Midnight Sky. Based on the novel by Lily Brooks-Dalton, the last remaining scientist in the arctic attempts to warn a returning spaceship of Earth's tragic apocalypse. He discovers that a young girl (Caoilinn Springall) did not evacuate with the others, further complicating the situation. The Midnight Sky is a dramatic exploration of what mankind holds dear, and culmination of our disastrous affect on the planet. George Clooney stars, directs, and co-produces the film.
Last December, Netflix held a virtual press conference with George Clooney and the supporting ensemble. The Midnight Sky co-stars Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir, and Tiffany Boone. They play the astronauts en route home after finding a hospitable moon near Jupiter. Caoilinn Springall also stars as the child found by Augustine Lofthouse, Clooney's character, at the research base.

“Music is a character in this film because a good portion of it is silent,” says director George Clooney about his movie “The Midnight Sky.” “Not just highlighting moments of sadness or terror, but also to carry the emotion all the way through.”
Composer Alexandre Desplat wrote more than 90 minutes of music for the sci-fi film, which stars Clooney as a scientist in the Arctic trying to contact a ship returning from Jupiter to convey the bad news: Radiation is enveloping Earth, and most of its inhabitants are dead or dying.
“It’s like a ballet or a concert on-screen,” notes Desplat. “The characters don’t talk much; the visuals are leading the story. Music conveys the emotions of all the characters: Augustine [Clooney], who is very ill; the little girl [Caoilinn Springall], who doesn’t speak; the crew in the spaceship.”
