The Raid: Redemption Written and Directed by: Gareth Evans Starring: Iko Uwais, Ananda George, Ray Sahetapy, Yayan Ruhian If you're a fan of martial arts movies, there's a pretty good chance that you've already heard of The Raid: Redemption (formerly known as The Raid), an Indonesian action flick that debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and very quickly became the talk of the town. It was so well-received that it was immediately acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, Sony's specialty division that typically only dabbles in martial arts films when they come from acclaimed art house directors like Ang Lee and Zhang Yimou. I can tell you with absolute certainty that there are no slow motion rain drops or colourful period costumes in The Raid: Redemption. Needless to say, if you happen to be tuned in to the proper channels, the buzz surrounding this film has been deafening.

Title: The Raid: Redemption Director: Gareth Evans Cast: Iko Uwais, Ananda George, Yayan Ruhian and Ray Sahetapy The complexities of storytelling and audience engagement are in the narrative’s simplicities. A simple story can draw and audience in while a driving direction can move them along. “The Raid: Redemption” is the perfect example of how this is true. By not being weighed down by exposition or world building, the film shines at what it does best, delivering heart-stopping and thrilling action. “The Raid: Redemption” is a triumph of stunt work and action filmmaking at its best. The story is very simple. A group of elite cops must capture a crime lord [ Read More ]...

One of the most-buzzed films of SXSW 2012, The Raid: Redemption was granted only one screening at the largest venue in the festival, the 1,200-seater Paramount Theater. When I arrived, an hour early, the line was wrapped twice around the theater, people at the front of the line having arrived nearly three hours early to secure their spots. This was The film of SXSW 2012 that everyone was dying to see, having garnered considerable and impressive buzz at the Toronto Film Festival.
The movie is focused on Rama, an idealistic, morally strong young man with an expecting wife at home. He is a member of an elite Swat squad in Indonesia charged with the task of infiltrating a 15-story apartment complex maintained by a drug-and-crime lord and filled with the nastiest scum of the underworld as rent-paying tenants.
