Martial art films are an entertaining genre. Usually, they are simple plot wise, but pulling off a good martial art film is a big challenge; pulling off a great one, a monumental task. “The Raid” is one such great movie. Released on 23rd March 2012, and directed by Gareth Evans, this is an action packed movie, which leaves you at the edge of your seat all along the way.
The story revolves around Rama (played by Iko Uwais), who is part of a 20 man elite police squad. They have a mission to raid a tenement in Jakarta’s slums. The building is run by a crime lord, Tama Riyadi (played by Ray Sahetapy), who rents rooms there to criminals looking for refuge. Tama has two lieutenants, Andi (played by Donny Alamsyah) and Mad Dog (played by Yayan Ruhian). To add to the complexity of the situation, Andi is Rama’s estranged brother.

They say that idle hands are the devil’s playthings, but Indonesian schlockmeister Timo Tjahjanto is never busier than when he’s skirting around the fringes of hell. Just a few long weeks after the release of his gonzo and blood-drenched beat-em-up, “The Night Comes for Us,” Tjahjanto is back with a gonzo and blood-drenched dose of domestic horror, “May the Devil Take You” (viewers familiar with the director’s gobstopping “V/H/S 2” segment won’t be surprised to see that he’s drawn to movies about the inescapable forces of darkness). Both films are available to stream on Netflix, both films offer giddy proof of Tjahjanto’s insatiable appetite for human suffering (both on the screen and in the audience), and both films become interminable reminders that geysers of blood can only get you so far.

Recently enjoying its North American theatrical premiere at Fantastic Fest, Timo Tjahjanto's May the Devil Takes You (original-language title: Sebelum Iblis Menjemput ) arrives today on Netflix and it's a must-watch for horror fans. Tjahjanto also recently directed The Night Comes For You, an extremely violent action spectacular that debuted on Netflix (available with Bahasa Indonesia subtitles) last month. (Here's my very positive review.) So, if you haven't seen that one yet, your weekend viewing is now set! I recommend seeing the action spectacular first and then the creepy horror flick. May the Devil Takes You follows a young woman named Alfie (Chelsea Islan), who heads to her family's disused home in the countryside after her father Lesmana (Ray Sahetapy) falls into a mysterious coma....

Writer/ director Timo Tjahjanto doesn’t hold back on punching out the gore laden shocks in this inept but playful Indonesian frightener that draws heavily from J-Horror and The Evil Dead. The scares start swiftly in a pre-credit sequence which deftly relays titbits required before plunging viewers face first into the fug of a bungled ritual. The pact sees financially struggling, middle aged father, Lesmana (Ray Sahetapy) make a deal with a demon in exchange for wealth. Lesmana becomes cursed with inevitable set-backs (usually detailed in the small print of such transactions) then finds himself bankrupt, hospitalised and edging on death. Lesmana’s wife and children move into his villa, discover demonic paraphernalia and are forced into battle with soul hungry spectres, hell-bent on possessing then massacring them.
Scares intensify steadily through Mtdty’s riveting set-up before an opening credit sequence glides through Lesmana’s life post ritual/ in the run up to his hospitalisation.

The Killers Inside Me: The Mo Bros’ International Serial Spree
Directing duo Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto, better known as the Mo Brothers, team for the slice and dice serial killer thriller Killers, which should at least get credit for being a bit more psychologically advanced than one might otherwise assume. Produced by a variety of notables, including Gareth Evans and Sion Sono (you’d be forgiven if the hyper-choreographed bits of bloody violence didn’t remind you several times of either of those more infamous, stylized directors) and with its two leads hailing from The Raid 2, there’s certainly a core audience for this type of material from which the Mo Brothers do not deviate, though its violence as mindset motif seems to prize subtexts we often find swimming in the carnage of Sono’s films. Women, as are often the case in these hyperviolent explorations of the devious masculine id,...

When presented with a film proudly stating “from the producers of The Raid” you’d expect it to be similar, but with Killers that thought would be wrong. This isn’t a bad thing though, the subject matter makes up for it. A psychological battle of wits between two serial killers from different backgrounds being drawn together through the lust for murder is an interesting concept, what will happen when they finally meet?
Bayu Aditya (Oka Antara) is a loser in life, a failed investigative journalist and separated from his wife he finds himself pushed into murder when defending himself from a mugging. Nomura Shuhei (Kazuki Kitamura) is a charismatic good-looking man in his early thirties and more importantly successful. Behind...

A new, very not safe for work trailer has made its way online for Killers, the next film from moviemaking duo The Mo Brothers (Macabre), and it's hitting all the right notes... and faces. Check it out!
Killers stars Ray Sahetapy, the veteran Indonesian actor who played the crime boss Tama in The Raid.
Developed by The Mo Brothers from a story by Nightmare Detective producer Ushiyama Takuji, Killers is a dark psychological look into the minds of two men with nothing in common: Nomura, a self-obsessed serial killer residing in Tokyo, and Bayu, a failing journalist and a struggling father in Jakarta. Connected through violent incidents, both men inexplicably start to feed off each other. As their lives become more uncontrollable, each of them starts to journey into a maze of violent self-discovery.

Killers turned out to be the darkest most brutal movie that I saw at Sundance. It is a really well made film, but damn... It's one of those movies that are kind of uncomfortable to watch, and you see things that cannot be unseen. It was was insanely violent and bloody, but that wasn't really what made it so brutal. It was the nature in which the violence was inflicted.
The story focuses on a serial killer named Mr. Nomura, who films himself killing the women that he lures to his home. He then posts them on a website were people can watch these live killings. There is another character in the film named Bayu that watches this killer's work. He is going through some hard times of his own with his job and family. "Why do this?" "Because we can." Yet another Sundance 2014 film debuting a trailer to kick off the festival is a Park City at Midnight selection titled Killers. The second feature comes from filmmaking collaborators Kimo Stamboel & Timo Tjahjanto, who last came to Sundance in 2013 to present their crazy segment "Safe Haven" (you know the one) from anthology horror V/H/S/2. The Sundance Institute has released the movie line-up for their Spotlight, Midnight and Sundance Kids selections for The Sundance Film Festival 2014. The Midnight selection has always been my favorite because its always packed with really crazy, fun, and messed up films. It looks like another great collection of films this next year! They include films such as Cooties with Elijah Wood, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead and more. Sundance Kids is a new addition this year which, if you couldn't tell, is meant for younger audiences.

You may have noticed Uncle Creepy posting lots of imagery from films playing at Sundance 2014 earlier today, and now we have the full announcement of which horror projects are included in the Spotlight and Park City at Midnight lineups.
As mentioned when posting the first wave of films screening this year, it's sometimes difficult to tell exactly what's horror-related, so below are our best guesses of what we'll be covering from this latest batch or are films that sound just fringey enough that we'll be keeping our eyes on them:
Spotlight
Blue Ruin / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Jeremy Saulnier) — A mysterious outsider’s quiet life turns upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving to be an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family. Cast: Macon Blair, Amy Hargreaves, Sidné Anderson, Devin Ratray,...

Playing as part of next year's Sundance Film Festival is the ultra-violent experience known as Killers, the next film from moviemaking duo The Mo Brothers (Macabre). Check out some new stills!
Be sure to keep your eyes on the official 2014 Sundance Film Festival website for more info.

I had a hunch that Cooties (read here) and Adam Wingard’s The Guest (read here) might make it into what appears to be a line-up of eight (there might be some wiggle one for one last minute inclusion), but this year’s section flaunts a more international palate with the latest from Norway’s Tommy Wirkola (sequel to Dead Snow – which showed at the fest in 2009) reps Europe, Taika Waititi & Jemaine Clement return to the fest they broke out of with Eagle Vs. Shark but with a mockumentary (What We Do in the Shadows) that might compliment the inclusion of Jim Jarmusch’s latest. Oceania gets further representation with Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook and from Asia, the program assures some blood splatter with The Mo Brothers’ Killers. William Eubank arrives with a title that might sound familiar for those who hit the fest in 2007, but this version of...

When Sundance announced the films in competition for the 2014 festival yesterday, its organizers noted that they were impressed by the caliber of cinematic artistry — mostly due to technology — that freed up filmmakers to experiment with different genres. No category of the festival is more rooted in genre than Park City at Midnight, the late-night section that specializes in horror and the supernatural, and this year’s slate has several potential breakouts. “The Midnight lineup came together in a way that is about the strongest group we’ve ever had, top to bottom,” says Trevor Groth, Sundance’s director of programming.

One of the coolest-sounding films of 2013 is Killers, the new collaboration from Indonesian directing duo The Mo Brothers - separately Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto - which is being produced, in part, by the team behind The Raid.Especially cool is the fact the film stars Ray Sahetapy, the veteran Indonesian actor who played the crime boss Tama to brutal perfection in The Raid.Developed by The Mo Brothers from a story by Nightmare Detective producer Ushiyama Takuji, Killers is an international horror-thriller revolving around a pair of serial killers who discover one another on the internet. If you've seen the Mo Brothers previous film together Macabre, or even Timo's absolutely unhinged gross-out segment 'L is for Libido' in ABCs of Death, you'll know that things get pretty...

From the first trailer people seemed to be saying, "So this is essentially a remake of The Raid," in response to Lionsgate's upcoming Dredd 3D and now a new red band clip from Den of Geek seems to confirm exactly that. I don't make it a habit of watching clips, but I wanted to watch a little bit of this one to see if there was any legitimacy to the claim and, to my surprise, there is... a lot in fact. Not having read the synopsis for Dredd, but having watched 38 seconds of the following clip it would seem Lena Headey (as Ma-Ma) plays a villain at the top of the food chain and Dredd (Karl Urban) and an accompanying "judge" played by Olivia Thirlby are there to take her down. Headey wields some sort of power over those that live in her particular building, I don't know if Ma-Ma is running drugs,...

The most impressive piece of cinema I have seen in a very long time just so happens to be one of the most violent. Consider this a fair warning, The Raid: Redemption is not for the faint of heart. Viewers should also take into consideration that a film with such a relentless, rapid-fire pacing of fight sequences will certainly not focus much on narrative or character development. A Swat team led by Lieutenant Wahyu (Pierre Gruno) storms a dilapidated Jakarta apartment building in order to take down an evil drug lord, Tama (Ray Sahetapy). One of the police officers is Rama (Iko Uwais), who is about to become a father. We should instantly recognize from this fleeting tidbit of background information that Rama has something worth fighting for. This also reveals Rama as strongest candidate to be the hero of the story; which is somewhat unfortunate because since the cast...

And Please, Don’T Forget To Enjoy Yourselves
“The Raid: Redemption” has been all over the news recently so my hopes were indeed very high. Now let’s see if it was all hype or not. Here’s the quick and painless answer: it’s legit, folks. Hardcore, intense, well thought out action sequences that we all love and crave. A decent and somewhat original story. And a couple of fresh new faces to keep you on your toes. The ‘good stuff’, in other words, for any fans of action flicks and the likes.
So here is the movie’s premise in two lines: an elite squad of Indonesian cops/S.W.A.T. decide to take down an entire building complex owned by a ruthless gang of maniacs (think zombies with brains). Very much in hierarchical fashion, they need to clear the entire area, floor by floor, apartment by apartment.

Isn’t it great when a film can actually keep pace with the hype machine built around it? Welshman Garth Evans’ The Raid is an almost impossibly efficient action film, a no-nonsense juggernaut of lightning-quick martial arts and extreme violence. Appealing so eagerly to our basic sense of gratification, this is very much the bounding, confident actioner that genre fans have been starved of.
The premise is laughably simple; entrenched in Jakarta’s slum district is a desolate apartment complex, which has become a hideaway for the city’s most repellent and dangerous criminals. At the top floor, crime lord Tama (Ray Sahetapy) operates a drug lab, dutily protected by thirty floors of violent psychopaths. Early one morning, a 20-man Swat team, including rookie Rama (Iko Uwais) initiates a dawn raid, sweeping from floor-to-floor, with the single aim of eliminating Tama and his crime empire once and for all.

Hollywood action films are increasingly becoming paint-by-numbers fare with uninteresting characters and unbelievable scenarios. The Raid, Welsh born writer and director Gareth Evans’ third feature film, hits hard due to its no-holds-barred coercion, unfaltering intensity and desire to do what most action films don’t: surprise its audience from the opening moments to the final fade to black.
Tasked with taking out Tama (Ray Sahetapy), landlord and kingpin to the scum of Jakarta, a Swat team enter the building complex in which they believe he and his drug lab to be located. Unaware of the tenants’ loyalty to Tama, they must rise up the block, floor by floor. But as the situation heats up, and Swat members are killed off one-by-one, team member Rama (Iko Uwais) must step-up in a bid to complete their assignment and escape the labyrinth.

Gareth Huw Evans' new film pits an elite Jakarta police unit against an entire towerblock of baddies. It's fast, violent and daring, like the best of the genre
If there's one word used to describe Asian cinema, it's usually "extreme". From South Korea we've had the hammer-wielding antics of Oldboy, whose star ate a live baby octopus, while from Japan we've had Takashi Miike's Ichi The Killer, in which a severed face hits a wall and slides down it – in one of the film's lighter moments. From Hong Kong comes pretty much anything with Jackie Chan in it, a martial artist who proudly boasts of having broken every bone in his 5ft 8" body. And now from Indonesia comes The Raid, an action extravaganza teeming with machete-twirling, gravity-defying psychos who slice, smash and crush anything that dares cross their path.
