After more than 15 years of development hell, the reimagining of “The Crow” will finally hit theaters this summer.
“The Crow” is based on the indie comic book series of the same name by James O’Barr that was originally published back in 1989 by Caliber Press. 30 years ago in 1994, a film adaptation of the comic book by visionary director Alex Proyas was released into theaters, perhaps better known as the movie where star Brandon Lee was accidentally shot and killed on set during the middle of production.
Miramax stepped in and spent $8 million to pick up where production left off and finish the film. “The Crow” went on to gross $93.7 million at the box office against its $23 million budget, and the film eventually became a cult classic. Three lackluster sequels and a television adaptation would follow, however the property had always been earmarked for what current distributor Lionsgate is calling a reimagining.

Lionsgate has officially released the trailer of the long-awaited adaptation of the 1994 supernatural action film The Crow. The trailer showcases Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven in a new look than what the late actor Brandon Lee established in the original film. With the original movie achieving hit status upon its release and gaining a dedicated fan base, it has since evolved into a franchise with multiple sequels and a television series.

The comic book "The Crow," created by James O'Barr in 1989, should be considered a seminal work in the then-growing Goth movement. The comics were about a man named Eric who was engaged to a woman named Shelly. One evening, Eric and Shelly are savagely beaten and assaulted. Eric is shot in the head but remains alive long enough to witness Shelly's horrible murder.
His story doesn't end there. The titular Crow appears over Eric's body and magically resurrects him, sending him on a quest for blood revenge. The unspeaking crow seems to want Eric to kill the punks that murdered Shelly, but also seemingly chastises him for brooding and remaining hung up on Shelly's death. Be angry, brood, but do not brood, and do not be angry. It's super-Goth. The comic was popular enough to warrant a celebrated film adaptation in 1994 starring Brandon Lee and directed by Alex Proyas. The film was ultra-stylized,...

After years of stops and starts, The Crow reboot is finally flying and now has the first trailer to prove it.
Bill Skarsgard leads the film, which centers on a man who is murdered, alongside his fiancée but is granted supernatural powers to seek revenge.
The Crow began life as a comic book, with James O’Barr debuting the character in 1989. It grew to new levels of popularity with the cult hit film, which starred the late Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed in an on-set accident during filming. Multiple sequels followed, including The Crow: City of Angels (1996), The Crow: Salvation (2000) and The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005).
But the current reboot took nearly 20 years to get off the ground, with multiple stars and filmmakers coming and going. Blade Stephen Norrington took a stab at one point, while F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall) and star Luke Evans tried to break the curse at another point.

Stars: Pedro Casablanc, Víctor Clavijo, Ruth Díaz, Moisés Ruiz, Manuel Morón | Written and Directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez
Writer/director F. Javier Gutiérrez returned to his native Spain to make his third film La Espera, or, in English, The Wait. It’s a title that refers not just to the passage of time but to the ten hunting stands on the estate of Don Francisco. They are watched over by Eladio, who lives on the remote property with his wife Marcia, and their son, Floren (Moisés Ruiz).
At the start of the 1973 hunting season, he’s told by Don Carlos, Don Francisco’s right-hand man, to surreptitiously add three more. At first, he refuses, saying that would crowd the hunting parties and be unsafe due to the risk of crossfires. Eventually, he relents, a decision he soon regrets when Floren is killed in a freak accident leading to Marcia’s suicide.

In his director’s statement for The Wait (La espera), F. Javier Gutiérrez describes his latest feature as a “slow-burn supernatural neo-western set in Spain in the 1970s.” That’s certainly an apt summary, but one that also underscores the movie’s main problem: It’s trying to be too many things at once, and by doing so amounts to less than the sum of its parts.
The Spanish filmmaker’s debut from 2008, Before the Fall, tried to combine a disaster flick with a home-invasion flick, yielding similarly sketchy results. In both cases, Gutiérrez showcases a keen sense of style but an inability, despite all the genre-jumping, to make something that feels truly original. World premiering at Oldenburg, with additional dates set for Sitges and Fantastic Fest, the film could provide decent streaming fodder for fans of international thrillers while finding a small theatrical audience at home in Spain.

The Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany’s leading all-indie fest, unveiled highlights for its 30th-anniversary edition, including several world premieres featuring Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard and Mission : Impossible star Ving Rhames.
Uppercut, a boxing film featuring Mission: Impossible star Ving Rhames, will close the festival on September 17. Director Torsten Ruether remade his own, German-language, debut Leberhaken, which premiered in Oldenburg in 2021. The Million Dollar Baby-style story sees Rhames as a disillusioned former boxer who gets a shot at redemption when a young woman shows up at his gym, begging him to train her.
Spanish genre director F. Javier Gutierrez will bring his latest horror tale, The Wait, to Oldenburg this year. Gutiérrez’s 2008 debut Before the Fall, an end-of-the-world sci-fi thriller, was a cross-over hit, and his follow-up was the big-budget Rings (2017) for Paramount, the third entry in the Japanese-inspired horror saga. When Charli D’Amelio started posting dance videos to TikTok in 2019, the now 18-year-old could never have imagined it would lead to a clothing line with her older sister Dixie, countless brand deals and a family reality show. Despite the stigma that often accompanies the TikTok famous who attempt to transition to Hollywood, the D’Amelios have prevailed, as Dixie’s blossoming music career and Charli’s casting in filmmaker F. “The Crow,” a reimagining that seems to be finally happening, has just announced the casting of Danny Huston in an undisclosed role.
Huston joins the film, which also stars Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs (as the woman he loves). The property is based on a comic book series by James O’Barr that was originally published back in 1989. In 1994, a film adaptation of the comic book by Alex Proyas was released into theaters, perhaps better known as the movie where star Brandon Lee was accidentally shot and killed on set. While it took a mad scramble (and several million more dollars) to finish “The Crow,” it went on to become a sizable hit and it inspired some so-so sequels, but the property had always been earmarked for revitalization.

While it took a mad scramble (and several million more dollars) to finish “The Crow,” it went on to become a sizable hit and it inspired some so-so sequels, but the property had always been earmarked for revitalization.

Charli D'Amelio is flexing her acting chops.
A few days shy of her 18th birthday, the TikTok star has been announced as the lead for Home School, a film that will be produced by Ryan Kavanaugh's Proxima Media and financed through the film exec's Entertainment Stock Exchange.
Home School is a thriller that stars the younger D'Amelio sister as a teenager who encounters supernatural happenings after moving to a new town. Kavanaugh told Deadline that the film is trying to be "The Sixth Sense meets Get Out." Should Home School succeed in that goal, it could be developed into a franchise with up to eight distinct thrillers starring D'Amelio.
D'Amelio's foray into acting has a lot in common with Skill House, which features Sway LA co-founder Bryce Hall. Both movies are led by TikTok stars, both are produced by Kavanaugh, and both feature directors who have experience with popular horror franchises.

In Home School, D’Amelio will play Mira, a 17-year-old who moves to a different town to live with her aunt after her mother passes away. Antonio Pérez‘ Seville-based Maestranza Films, producer of Benito Zambrano’s “Solas” and “The Sleeping Voice”), and Kiko Martinez Madrid-based Nadie Es Perfecto, the company behind Álex de la Iglesia’s “The Bar,” have teamed to co-produce a remake of Bigas Luna’s cult horror modern classic “Anguish” (1987).
Spain-born but based in Los Angeles, Spanish director F. Javier Gutiérrez is attached to direct. Gutiérrez’ second feature, horror “Rings” –part of the several remakes saga starting with Gore Verbinski’s “The Ring”– nabbed $83 million worldwide.

Friday the 13th has found itself smack bang in the middle of a cinematic conundrum, that much we know.
The ongoing legal battle has cast a dark, worrisome shadow over the franchise’s immediate future, and while Platinum Dunes co-founder Andrew Form is still holding out hope that Jason Voorhees’ reign of terror will one day – one day – get another shot at the big-time, it’s fair to say that things are looking pretty bleak for horror’s masked murderer.
It’s frustrating, too, as before the rights reverted back to Warner Bros. and New Line Pictures – the industry powerhouses behind It and next year’s Chapter Two – Paramount came oh so close to launching a Friday the 13th reboot. Why did it collapse, you ask?
That very question was presented to long-time Platinum producer Brad Fuller during a recent interview with Syfy Wire (h/t Bloody Disgusting), to which...

A high-risk shot at a screen adaptation of a novel within a novel, The Motive is entertaining and buzzes with fun ideas, but as an involving drama, it never gets past the first chapter. Manuel Martin Cuenca’s films have mainly been about weirdo outsiders living in an offbeat, slightly alien world that’s all the Spanish director’s own, and in his last outing, he was able to pull off the remarkable feat of eking out a little sympathy for a cannibal. But this time, and despite a more-than-willing performance from the dependable Javier Gutierrez, such sympathy is crucially absent.

Had things panned out differently, 2017 would have been a year long remembered for horror revivals – for better or worse.
Twice delayed, F. Javier Gutiérrez and Tsutomu Hanabusa’s Rings movie crawled its way onto the big screen back in February and was, quite frankly, dead on arrival. Lionsgate’s Saw: Legacy, meanwhile, (or should that be Jigsaw?) will hope to sidestep those creative pitfalls this October with a dark new chapter in the twisted story of one John Kramer.
And that’s before you even factor in Paramount’s long-in-development Friday the 13th reboot. Not unlike the aforementioned Rings, the Jason Voorhees origin story has been beset with production woes from the get-go – so much so, in fact, that production purportedly shut down earlier this year to lend those writers involved enough time to whip the screenplay into shape.
That brings us to another of 2017’s potential horror pics: Amityville: The Awakening.

It's been a while since we last heard any updates about the reboot of the cult classic The Crow. But it seems there is still a flicker of hope that it will come to be. In a recent interview with Forbes.com executive producer and former director F. Javier Gutiérrez (Rings) says they are still developing the movie which has a $40 million dollar budget. He also confirmed it will be rated R:
"...we are going to do an R-rated movie. I come from Europe, I’m very dark so I’m going to go for it. If any movie has to be R-rated then it’s The Crow. That’s how I got James O’Barr, the creator of The Crow, involved in the project because he said that if R-rated is the way that I wanted to go, he’s in. Even though I’m not directing it now,...

Can The Crow remake ever take flight in Hollywood? That’s the question that has plagued said reimagining for years, as Relativity’s horror/fantasy pic ricocheted from one director to another in what quickly became a truly torrid saga of false hope and non-starts.
It was during this time that Jack Huston, Luke Evans, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Bradley Cooper all came attached to the part of Eric Draven – a part that was originally brought to life by Brandon Lee all those years ago – at various stages, only to drop out before The Crow remake could garner a sense of momentum. And that’s before you even factor in Relativity’s financial woes, which resulted in the project uprooting for a new home at Davis Films, Highland Film Group, and Electric Shadow. Between them, those three parties have pledged their combined support to the re-adaptation,...

For the third week on the trot, Split held its place at the tip-top of the U.S. box office. A $14.15 million haul over Super Bowl weekend was enough to see off competition from F. Javier Gutiérrez’s Rings, and take the film’s worldwide total to a whopping $142 million. Not bad for a psychological thriller that cost an estimated $9 million to make.
But then again, Split isn’t your typical movie, and M. Night Shyamalan’s early plans for a sequel are a far cry from the age-old process of rinsing and repeating. As of February 4th, the prolific writer-director is in possession of an 11-page treatment for his Split sequel, and during a recent episode of Josh Horowitz’s HappySadConfused podcast – as relayed by Collider – Shyamalan touched base on his vision for the conclusive chapter.

Darkly stylish and occasionally moody, Rings mostly lies flat on the screen, daring anyone to pay attention. Featuring not one but two different sequences before the main title appears, the filmmakers tip their hand early, in favor of the loud and obvious. It's an approach that treats the audience with kid gloves, literally: 'Let us explain this concept to you and then let us chop up these supposedly scary things into tiny little bits so it will go down easier.' That approach, it turns out, is at odds with the resolutely gloomy atmosphere that director F. Javier Gutierrez soon establishes. His previous feature, Before the Fall (Tres dias), impressed this site's reviewer Kurt Halfyard back in 2008; he noted, in part: " It certainly does...

So far, 2017 has not been kind to long-delayed horror releases. Remember The Bye Bye Man? What a dreadful way to kickstart another year of screams. I have to admit before I start this review that I’m not the biggest fan of the Ring franchise. I’ve seen them, I don’t hate them, but I can’t say I ever loved them. Rings didn’t change that. Unfortunately, what started as a chance to reinvigorate a franchise ended up making it look worse.
From the very outset, Rings feels more like a shoehorned idea rather than a major plot point. Whereas Samara seemed subtle before, she’s so omnipresent in this one that it feels artificial and strange.
The story of Rings is the story of Julia (Matilda Lutz), who travels across the country to find her boyfriend Holt (Alex Roe) after he goes missing. Her curse only takes seven days to work its deadly magic, but it’s been over ten years since Samara was last seen on the big screen in the American version of the Ring franchise. That all changes with the release of Rings this weekend, and while it does share the same name as Jonathan Liebesman’s 2005 short film that bridges the gap between The Ring and The Ring Two, it doesn’t share its predecessor’s ability to get under your skin.
The Ring Two was released in March of 2005, and a lot has changed in the nearly 12 intervening years between then and now, especially with technology. While mobile connectivity was becoming more commonplace in ’05 (when flip phones were seemingly multiplying overnight like rabbits in the summertime), the concept of being constantly “plugged in” was vastly different than today’s screen-centric culture. It takes seven days for the videotape in the “Ring” horror franchise to kill its victims, but only 102 minutes for “Rings” to bleed the premise dry. Twelve years after the last underwhelming entry in the series, “The Ring Two,” this half-hearted attempt to resurrect the J-horror import for another era instead proves its irrelevance.
The original movies generated an eerie suspense around grainy VHS footage and the horrors that lurk within its confines coming to life. This latest entry, featuring all new characters, finds the ghostly Samara working her way into the digital realm, hacking her way through MP4 files to assail a whole new generation of viewers — not only the characters, but younger audiences who may have no other reference point for this franchise outside of this dull retreat.
