TheWrap’s first fashion awards – specifically for brands, stars and stylists who walk off with the winning numbers of the night – was compiled by one of the most credible Oscar fashion prognosticators, journalist Merle Ginsberg. The studios or streamers who earn the most Academy Awards is always a hot media topic. But in the fashion, jewelry and beauty worlds, there are also winners – and losers – of every red carpet, too. Each year, stylists, actors and brands compete for press, praise – and power. Just as Oscar winning movies and actors earn more money and status, so do brands that triumph with the very best looks: gowns, tuxes, jewels, accessories, hair, makeup – on the biggest runway in the world.

Former RuPaul's Drag Race judge and current THR writer Merle Ginsberg has noticed that a lot of straight male stars lately seem kind of, well, gay. And they're like totally cool with it. Her evidence? Adam Levine likes to wear V-necks! Tom Hardy said he experimented with boys! Channing Tatum danced on a gay pride float! "Straight male stars aren't stressed out at being perceived as gay or extremely gay-friendly," she writes in a piece for THR. "Far from feeling stigmatized, they welcome the gay gaze, staring invitingly and modeling shirtless on the covers of such gay magazines as Out and The Advocate, or both." And she has a word to identify this new species of men: "Stromos" — that is, "straight homos."I know, I know: yuck. However, if you look beyond the portmanteau, there's some validity to her argument. As of late, there is an obvious and concerted push...

Ginsberg was replaced by Michelle Visage after the first two seasons of the show, with no real explanation as to why she left. (Though given that Tyra Sanchez won season two,...

Nicole Kidman wants to dispel some rumors about her relationship with Tom Cruise in connection to Stanley Kubrick's 1999 drama, "Eyes Wide Shut." The film that produced much controversy in the U.S. over some graphic sex scenes featuring Kidman and then-husband, Tom Cruise.
Kidman tells Merle Ginsberg, "People thought that making the film was the beginning of the end of my marriage, but I don't really think it was." She goes on to point out the kinky sex seen on screen was not the reality of her sex life with Tom.

West Hollywood, Calif. — Even though Katie Holmes, Zoe Saldana and new mom Charlize Theron were among the guests, the real stars at the inaugural 25 Most Powerful Stylists luncheon were the experts who dress them.
The Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo held an intimate gathering Wednesday at Soho House to honor entertainment's most influential stylists. The event was held in conjunction with the magazine's new style issue, which ranks the top tastemakers according to their red-carpet presence, the number of nominees they've dressed and the breakout style stars they've developed.
"So many trends, so much of what sells is because of all the people here and all the actresses who work with them," said Merle Ginsberg of the Hollywood Reporter, who helped edit the magazine's second annual stylists' ranking. The issue is on newsstands now.
Jimmy Choo spokeswoman Dana Gers credited the stylists with turning the "small brand" into a coveted one that tops fashion lists.

Reality TV judging: It’s important. I can only commit to a TV talent show if I believe there are tough, fair-minded judges keeping the circus under control. Since we’re headlong into enticing seasons of The Voice and American Idol, the time is right to reflect upon the best judges in reality TV history – the ones who boast authority, smarts, sass, and fearsomeness. Oh, and some evil too!

It's Los Angeles hotel season, folks. And no, that doesn't mean hotels around the city do promotions or offer great deals. It means it's Oscar time. So forget the normal Angeleno status indicators of having a nice car or fancy zip code -- this week, where you stay, drink and dine is more important than ever before.
Our friends over at The Hollywood Reporter have put together the list to end all lists and they have called it "Hotel Wars." We prefer to look at is as a guide to where to try to sneak in this week for a quick cocktail and a possible Oscar family sighting. Check out a few of our favorites below, or click over to THR for the complete list. Bottoms up!

Michael Sheen (Aro) and the cast of Midnight in Paris have been nominated in the very prestigious SAG Awards for “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture” while the lead actor in Chris Weitz’s A Better Life, Demián Bichir, has been nominated in “Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role”. The 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live coast to-coast on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012, at 8 Pm Est/ 5pm Pst. Read more below:
Here Michael and co-star Owen Wilson give their reactions to The Hollywood Reporter:
Michael Sheen, Midnight in Paris — outstanding drama ensemble: “How lovely? I’m assuming “ensemble” is French for Best British Actor Playing A Pedantic American With A Pointy Beard?”
Owen Wilson, Midnight in Paris — outstanding drama ensemble: “It’s an honor to be recognized by your peers and I thank my fellow SAG members for this nomination and am proud to have been a part of such an incredible ensemble, as well as Woody Allen’s vision.”
From the La Times:
Demián Bichir, a 48-year-old Mexican actor little-known to American moviegoers, scored a surprise best actor nomination at the SAG Awards on Wednesday morning.
Bichir, who plays an illegal immigrant pursuing the American dream in “A Better Life,” beat out a couple of projected favorites in the category, including “Shame’s” Michael Fassbender and Gary Oldman from “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Directed by Chris Weitz, “A Better Life” has only grossed $1.8 million at the U.S. box office.
Here Demián Bichir reacts to his nomination to The Hollywood Reporter:
Demián Bichir, A Better Life — outstanding lead actor in a drama: “My girlfriend called me, that was really good. I just could not believe the statement saying that I was nominated, and with all those other amazing actors. It’s the actor’s vote. It’s so rewarding fellow peers vote for you. To me to be among these amazing actors, it’s a double honor. I’m overwhelmed by the whole thing. [Laughs] I’ve been an actor since I was a kid, grew up in the theater, I was 17 when I did my first play, O’Neill’s Ah Wilderness — I thought I wanted the rest of the world to get to know my work. Everyone knows how tough the competition is in the United States for any artist. So to have a place amongst so much talent I feel truly blessed.” — Merle Ginsberg

Anne Hathaway's Oscar night costumes have helped earn pregnant fashion guru Rachel Zoe a top stylist crown in a new magazine poll. Zoe helped dress the actress for her Academy Awards co-hosting stint with James Franco last month and, although Hathaway's performance met mixed reviews, her gowns were stunning.
On the strength of that and her many other star stylists, Zoe has topped a list of the 25 most powerful celebrity stylists in the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter. Ronni Chasen gets a (misspelled) tribute, and "12 Angry Men" gets recast with Oscar bloggers. My favorite moment of last night's episode of RuPaul's Drag Race revolves around this quote from RuPaul herself: "Tatianna, that’s an answer for the Miss America contest—not the RuPaul Drag Race contest.” Zing! Sitting at the judges' table, the drag superstar host had just asked Tatianna who from Team Pandora Boxx deserved to go home after losing the burlesque challenge. And, while everyone else on the team was saying that Tatianna herself should take her high heels back to the streets and leave the Drag Race womb, Tatianna decided to go allllll kinds of PC with her answer,...

To be fair, so does everything. Behold the intro video for Bravo's second "We wish it was Project Runway but instead it is this" series, Launch My Line. This time, 20 people who are already successful in different lines of work -- music mogul! CEO! -- need only exhibit a "passion for fashion" in order to compete for the chance to launch a clothing line. Take it away, D Squared. My favorite part of the video is when Merle Ginsberg -- a judge on RuPaul's Drag Race but a contestant here, declares, "I am a frustrated fashion designer," with the same proud/defensive intonation one might use when insisting, "I do care about the Middle East." We have architect David Applebaum, whose client base is two-thirds deceased, Lou Rawls' daughter, familiar face (but not that hat!) Patrick McDonald, So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Dan Karaty, and Eric the DJ,...
