Like LeVar Burton, Wes Studi, and many other actors before him, Bob Odenkirk turned to Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Finding Your Roots for help researching his past. The erstwhile star of Better Call Saul was born in Berwyn, Illinois, a working-class suburb of Chicago, but grew up in the much more affluent Naperville. Odenkirk confesses to Gates Jr. that he always felt out of place in what became his hometown. He was part of a large, Irish Catholic family, with a distant father and a mother who struggled to put enough food on the table, but would do anything for her seven kids.

Bob Odenkirk was left wide-eyed and slack-jawed after the avowed anti-monarchist was told he is related to King Charles III during an appearance on PBS’s Finding Your Roots.
Henry Louis Gates Jr. revealed to Odenkirk that he is the 11th cousin of Britain’s head of state after the actor disavowed monarchies and their role in modern democracies.
Odenkirk is linked to the King through his fifth great-grandfather Friedrich Carl Steinholz, who was born out of wedlock to the Duke of Plön. Plön was related to the royal families of Europe due to intermarriage, meaning Odenkirk has regal blood.
Gates teased the reveal, initially telling the Better Call Saul actor about Steinholz. “[It makes me feel] like a part of history that I didn’t think I was any part of,” Odenkirk responded. “I’m an American. I’m not a monarchist. I don’t believe in that. You know, I feel like it’s a little twisted.

Actor-comedian Bob Odenkirk was left gobsmacked after his family line was confirmed to be linked to that of King Charles III. The ‘Better Call Saul’ star appeared on the US genealogy series ‘Finding Your Roots’ when he was told of the shocking discovery, reports Mirror.co.uk.
The revelation awkwardly came after the American insisted he was “not a monarchist”. The show’s host Henry Louis Gates Jr, made the connection after being able to trace Odenkirk’s family roots back five generations to Friedrich Carl Steinholz, who was the actor’s fifth great grandfather born in Plon, Germany in 1755.
As per Mirror.co.uk, the findings showed how Steinholz’s mother conceived him out of wedlock with the Duke of Plon, who was in fact tied to other royal families across Europe thanks to intermarriage.
Prior to the reveal, Odenkirk said on the show: “I’m an American. I’m not a monarchist.

When will Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr. Season 10 be released on PBS? Let’s find out the details you need to know about the PBS series.
The documentary television series is hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and it premiered back in 2012 on PBS.
The unique thing about the documentary series is that each episode is presented by celebrity guests with a ‘book of life’ that is compiled with information that had been researched by professionals that allow them to take a sneak peek at their ancestral histories, all the while learning about familial connections and their lineage – henceforth the name of the show!
The series uses traditional genealogical research techniques and genetics to discover the family history of some pretty well-known Americans – including Y-chromosome DNA, mitochondria DNA, and autosomal DNA that analyses both ancient and recent genetic relationships – it’s all pretty cool if you ask us!

In anticipation of her new memoir, Thicker Than Water, actress Kerry Washington has addressed a new revelation about her parents.
On an appearance on the PBS series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr., Washington’s parents, Valerie and Earl, told Gates that Earl wasn’t Kerry’s biological father. Her parents, who struggled with fertility, used a sperm donor to help conceive. Gates then encouraged the actress’ mom and dad to tell Kerry the information themselves.
For Washington, the news had “really turned her world upside down.” She said she believes it helped her to love herself, as she thinks her struggles with anxiety, self-esteem and eating disorders were connected to the secret.
“I think that dissonance of like, ‘Somebody is not telling me something about my body,’ made me feel like there was something in my body I had to fix,” Washington said.

Kerry Washington says her feelings of “not quite belonging” in her family that she’s had since childhood were a result of a long-hidden secret that she was conceived using a sperm donor.
The actress opened up about the revelation in new interviews with The New York Times and People, tied to the release of her upcoming memoir, Thicker Than Water. Out on Sept. 26, the memoir was initially the suggestion of friend and Scandal boss Shonda Rhimes years ago, with Washington admitting that at the time, she had this “nagging feeling” she “didn’t quite know myself well enough” to pull it off.
Now, Thicker Than Water dives deep on her educational and performance journeys, but also more difficult topics, like her various mental health conditions — depression, an eating disorder and insomnia — as well as the shocking revelation that her father is not her biological parent.
