Arriving at a moment when interest in all things atomic has been piqued by the global success of “Oppenheimer,” Dragan Bjelogrlić’s “Guardians of the Formula” offers a far more classical, but no less gripping take on a little-known episode marking a historical intersection between the medical and nuclear sciences. Based on Goran Milašinović’s book “Vinča Case,” there are further echoes of Christopher Nolan’s epic in how this elegantly constructed movie centers the ethical and ideological dilemmas of brilliant men of science thrust, somewhat reluctantly, onto the international political stage. But it differs in its careful inclusion of the heroism of ordinary people, and in showing how, while genius is valuable, it’s only prolonged exposure to more everyday human decency that can irradiate the more bull-headed scientific ego with the compassion needed for actual wisdom.

I not going to hide the fact I’m a huge Transporter fan, from the very first movie to the more recent, if little seen here in the UK, TV show, I’ve enjoyed [to various extents] each and every entry in the franchise. So, unlike some out there, I was not afraid to see the film series rebooted with a new star and a new story. And that’s what we get with The Transporter Refueled. My only worry was that no-one connected to the original films, apart from Luc Besson, had any part of this film… But then that was also the case with the series, and I really enjoyed that!

EuropaCorp USA released their new action movie, "The Transporter Refueled," into theaters today, September 4th, 2015, and all the top, major movie critics have turned in their reviews. It turns out that it didn't quite resonate too good with most of them, getting just an overall 31 score out of a possible 100 across 18 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Anatole Taubman, Ed Skrein, Gabriella Wright, Lenn Kudrjawizki, Loan Chabanol, Radivoje Bukvic, Ray Stevenson and Tatiana Pajkovic. We've provided blurbs from a few of the critics, below. Kyle Anderson from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 67 grade. He stated: "It’s hard to deny the hedonistic joy in the way Delamarre plays with his various toys, and the goofball stunts—including the yacht-based finale, with a special appearance by a jet ski—are generally worth wandering through the dialogue desert." Andrew Barker over at Variety, gave it a 60 grade. He said:...

There isn’t a single level on which this crass reboot operates that isn’t a disaster. There is all sorts of stupid at work here, and all sorts of offensive. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of the earlier films
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There isn’t a single level on which this cheap, crass reboot/sequel/whatever-the-hell operates that isn’t a disaster. Often an embarrassing disaster. Very often a disaster so disgusting that, its endless 90-plus minutes later, I was in desperate need of a shower to get the ick off me.
The Jason Statham-as-a-badass-chauffeur action franchise was not demanding another installment; the first three films did only moderately well at the box office, and likely only off Statham’s popularity anyway. Yet here we are, Statham wisely nowhere in sight and his replacement,...

Frank Martin (played by newcomer Ed Skrein), a former special-ops mercenary, is now living a less perilous life – or so he thinks – transporting classified packages for questionable people. For many, Jason Statham’s hard-boiled Frank Martin is The Transporter, given that the British hard man injected the cult action series with a tenacity that saved it from mediocrity. Now that The Stath has moved on to pastures anew, there are a lot of understandable concerns looming over Camille Delamarre’s (Brick Mansions) reboot effort, though the latest trailer and action-packed clip are an effective one-two punch that prove that, above anything, The Transporter Refueled will retain the franchise’s boisterous action sensibilities.
Supplanting Statham in the lead role is newcomer Ed Skrein, who plays a slightly different version of Frank Martin. While enjoying a holiday with his old man in southern France, Frank’s idyllic downtime is unceremoniously upended by a femme fatale and her group of highly-trained, seductive associates, who together convince our protagonist to orchestrate one of the ambitious bank heists in history.

There's no Jason Statham, but there is a new Transporter movie. Something doesn't quite add up here...
There's something that seems inherently wrong to us in making a Transporter film that doesn't have the mighty Jason Statham on board. Nonetheless, the plan is in place for a new trilogy of films, telling the earlier stories of Frank Martin.
Stepping into The Statham's shoes is Ed Skrein, and he headlines The Transporter Refuelled, which arrives in cinemas from September 4th. This time, the film has been directed by Camille Delamarre (who helmed Brick Mansions, starring the late Paul Walker), and in the cast are also Ray Stevenson, Radivoje Bukvic and Anatole Tubman.

A new trailer for the upcoming reboot of the Transporter franchise, The Transporter Refueled, has been released. I'm not sure if Jason Statham said "No" to another film (that seems unlikely) or if Europacorp was merely interested in saving a little money on their leading man, but this time around it's Ed Skrein (Daario Naharis on "Game of Thrones") in the leading role and Brick Mansions helmer, Camille Delamarre, directing. They haven't changed the name of the lead character as Skrein will be playing Frank Martin, hired by Anna (Loan Chabanol) and her three sidekicks, only to realize he's been played. Anna and her cohorts have kidnapped Frank's father (Ray Stevenson) in order to coerce Frank into helping them take down a ruthless group of Russian human traffickers. Additional members of the cast include Lenn Kudrjawizki, Radivoje Bukvic, Gabriella Wright and Anatole Taubman The Transporter Refueled will release in theaters on Sept.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Europa Corp. and 20th Century Fox would have called time on The Transporter series following the departure of hardboiled action veteran Jason Statham, but low and behold, seven years after the previous installment, an all-new trilogy beckons.
It’s one that will rev into action later this year with The Transporter Refueled, which ushers franchise newcomer Ed Skrein into the title role. Best known for his work on The Tunnel and Ill Manors, along with a part in next year’s Deadpool, the actor will get behind the wheel for Camille Delamarre’s soft reboot – one which seemingly retains the globe-trotting heist action from the original trilogy.
Mind you, The Stath brought a considerable amount of gravitas to the role of Frank Martin, lending a palpable sense of charm to an otherwise generic set-up. It’s understood Refueled will kick Statham’s character to the kerb,...

Welcome to "The Transporter Refueled." (Sheesh). Anyway, Ed Skrein is now behind the wheel, tasked as they guy who can deliver dangerous or illegal packages with ease on four wheels. But things get hairy when he's hired by a trio of femme fatales to assist in a massive bank heist, which soon sees him tangling with Russian mobsters. EuropaCorp has pushed back the U.S. release of "The Transporter Refueled" by two and a half months.
Originally slated for June 19th, the film will now open on the Labor Day holiday weekend of September 4th. The early Fall bow is more in line with the three previous films which also came out during that season.
Part of the reason for the delay is that it means the cast can give the film a bigger promotional push, something seen as quite necessary as it's hoped this will be the start of a new trilogy.
Ed Skrein, Loan Chabanol, Radivoje Bukvic, Gabriella Wright, Anatole Taubman and Tatiana Pajkovic star in the Camille Delamarre-directed film.

It’s only been six years since the original Transporter trilogy came to a close, but now, Luc Besson’s production outfit is reviving the franchise’s still-twitching corpse.

We all complain about reboots and remakes, but when Hollywood decides that now is the time to reboot The Transporter franchise, you can’t help but bring out the clichéd “They’re running out of new ideas!” argument.

EuropaCorp’s Transporter trilogy truly marked the arrival of Jason Statham as a bona fide action star, and now the franchise is getting a reboot – albeit without Statham. However, The Transporter Legacy, as the fourth film in the series has recently been titled, may launch a new actor to action stardom.

The first in the upcoming proposed prequel trilogy to EuropaCorp's "Transporter" franchise has scored a March 6th 2015 release date in the United States.
Former "Game of Thrones" actor Ed Skrein plays a younger version of Jason Statham's Frank Martin, an ex-special forces type who will transport anything for a price and follows a very strict code.
Entitled "The Transporter Legacy," Camille Delamarre ("Brick Mansions") helms the French underworld-set film in which Frank crosses paths with Anna (Loan Chabanol), a crime boss who decides Frank is the man to take down a group of ruthless Russian human traffickers.
Anna takes Frank's father (Ray Stevenson) as leverage to ensure his cooperation and both of them are forced to work with Anna to bring the villains to justice.
Radivoje Bukvic, Gabriella Wright, Anatole Taubman and Tatiana Pajkovic also star. Bill Collage and Adam Cooper ("Exodus: Gods and Kings") penned the script.

Chicago – Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy can’t be blamed for the deteriorating state of modern action films any more than Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” can be held accountable for commercializing American cinema. Yet the spectacular box office performance of Nolan’s terrific series has naturally caused studios to misinterpret the root of their success.
Many tentpole attractions in 2013 have strained to emulate the grit and grimness of “The Dark Knight,” but have made no attempt to create an equally compelling story. The vast majority of screen time in Nolan’s “Batman” pictures was devoted to character development, with dialogue-driven set-pieces delivering nearly as many thrills as the ones involving explosions (kudos to the underrated screenwriting abilities of Nolan and his brother Jonathan). But since studio executives are too thick-headed, or simply too lazy, to realize that the power of “Dark Knight” was in its story, they’ve simply...

The fifth film in the franchise sees John McClane stumble on his estranged son Jack’s daring prison rescue of a Russian scientist bent on testifying against the countries corrupt leader. Box office comparisons between the current and the previous Die Hard movies [See previous post: "Is the latest Willis / Die Hard movie a domestic box-office hit or a flop?"] However, when compared to the previous four movies in the franchise, the latest entry is nothing but a box-office disappointment -- though, I should add, it's the first movie in the franchise not to open in late spring/summer. (Pictured above: Willis as the invincible hero John McClane in A Good Day to Die Hard.) Directed by John McTiernan (who's currently facing a potential one-year prison sentence for lying to the FBI during the Anthony Pellicano wiretapping investigation several years ago), the original Die Hard movie released in 1988 scored $7.5 million (approximately $14 million today) at 1,276 theaters on its first weekend in wide release, July 22-24. The movie eventually cumed with $83 million (approximately $162.5 million today) in the United States and Canada. Director Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990) grossed $21.74m (approx. $41m today) at 2,507 venues on its opening...

The Movie: A Good Day to Die Hard (2013) Studio: 20th Century Fox Director: John Moore Starring: Bruce Willis as John McClane, Jai Courtney as Jack McClane, Sebastian Koch as Komarov, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Lucy, Yuliya Snigir as Irina and Rasha Bukvic as Alik Screenwriter: Skip Woods RottenTomatoes: 17% MetaCritic: 29/100 Snippet from My Review: (read my full review here) Before A Good Day to Die Hard even hit theaters there was talk of a sixth installment, but this film will have to defy all odds for that to happen. While I didn't dislike the Len Wiseman-directed fourth installment as much as others, the writing is clearly on the wall in that today's so-called action directors don't hold a candle to the likes of old schoolers such as John McTiernan who only seemed to get better while today's plastic wrapped clones only get worse. Director: John Moore Writer: Skip Woods Starring: Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Sebastian Koch, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Yuliya Snigir, Radivoje Bukvic As we watch many of our beloved action stars aging, it is easy to feel nostalgia for a time of inflated blockbusters with bodybuilding royalty. Fortunately, icons like Bruce Willis aren’t hanging up their Barettas anytime soon. This Valentine’s Day, reawaken your love for John McClane with A Good Day To Die Hard. The newest installment in the Die Hard franchise pairs McClane (Willis) with his son, Jack (Jai Courtney). Jack, we discover, is embroiled in an espionage scheme gone awry, and is in desperate need of his estranged father’s particular skills. Cue begrudging grunts of appreciation, father-son bonding one liners, and jokes about Willis’ age. The film is not surprisingly centralized on the passing of the torch from the gruff but wryly amused McClane to his...

Twentieth Century Fox marked the silver anniversary of its blockbuster Die Hard movie franchise with a ceremony on the historic studio backlot, during which a massive mural depicting the film’s iconic hero John McClane was unveiled in front of Stage 8.
Bruce Willis, who has essayed McClane in all five Die Hard pictures, including the latest installment, A Good Day To Die Hard, attended the ceremony, along with his co-star Jai Courtney, who portrays McClane’s son Jack in the new film, and its director, John Moore.

The festivities included a reception on the 21st floor of the Fox Plaza, which Die Hard fans will recognize as “Nakatomi Plaza” – ground zero for the non-stop action of the landmark original film.
Commented Bruce Willis: “One of the most exciting things about playing McClane is that he’s definitely not a superhero.

Christophe Honoré's latest film stars some of the greatest actors in contemporary France. Beloved features Catherine Deneuve, who appears alongside her real-life daughter, Chiara Mastroianni, as well as Ludivine Sagnier, who is best-known for her work in François Ozon's racy film Swimming Pool. Make no mistake -- Beloved is about women, although the men are no slouches: Milos Forman, Louis Garrel, Paul Schneider, Michel Delpech and Rasha Bukvic round out the main cast. But Honoré's focus is about love and loss, specifically for the multifaceted and often mysterious female characters we see on screen. We had the opportunity to sit down with the filmmaker to discuss his life and work in order to find out more about his motivations. Scroll down for images.

(Beloved world premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and was picked up for distribution by IFC Films. It opens theatrically on August 17, 2012. Visit the film’s website to learn more.)
Beloved, the latest film from French writer/director Christophe Honoré, uses the history of the late 20th century as a framework for exploring the difficult love affairs of a mother, Madeleine (played as a young woman by Ludivine Sagnier and as an older woman by Catherine Deneuve) and her daughter, Vera (Chiarra Mastroianni). Like much of Honoré’s work, the movie is rich with allusions not only to literary and theatrical forms, but to the history of the cinema itself; opening in a Parisian shoe store in 1964, it takes Honoré only a few moments to reference The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Cléo From 5 To 7 and Les Bonnes Femmes before, in a single beat, spinning directly into a nod to Belle Du Jour.

This musical switches between the 60s and the present with a light and charming touch
How you react to this film by Christophe Honoré may depend on how you react to its male star Louis Garrel. For me, the brooding Garrel is pretty insufferable, but his mannerisms are at least reasonably in check here. Like Honoré's 2007 film Les Chansons d'Amour, this is a musical; it's inspired by Jacques Demy and set in the 60s and 70s as well as the present. The period contrivances help make the musical touches less coy and arch. Ludivine Sagnier and Catherine Deneuve play the same woman young and old: this is the sexually passionate Madeleine, who in the 60s goes on the game after being propositioned in the street, and marries a client: a Czech doctor played as a young man by Radivoje Bukvic – and, older, by Milos Forman. History and politics wrench them apart and their grownup daughter,...

CANNES -- For the first three quarters of the movie, "La Californie" is a wonderfully old-fashioned French soap opera bordering on camp. Then the filmmaker spoils the fun by turning his movie into a serious crime story. The filmmaker is Jacques Fieschi, a well-known and prolific screenwriter, who makes his directing debut here. His script is based on a Georges Simenon novel, updated to present day with its very modern characters living dissolute, careless lives in a hillside area above Cannes known as La Californie.
With such popular stars as Nathalie Baye, Roschdy Zem and Ludivine Sagnier topbilled, the film will play well here when released in September. Elsewhere it falls between the cracks -- certainly not art house but not a comedy or crime thriller either despite elements of each.
Baye is delightfully flamboyant as Maguy, an aging woman of many indulgences, living on a rapidly dwindling bank account in a luxury villa and covering the expenses for a household full of companions. There are two Serb servants with dubious pasts Mirko (Zem) and Stephan (Radivoje Bukvic). She has taken both to bed but it's Mirko she longs for in an increasingly desperate fashion.
Katia (Mylene Demongeot) is a kindred spirit in Maguy's restless partying. A devoted gay couple, Francis Xavier De Guillebon) and Doudou (Antoine Bibiloni), are responsible for pulling Maguy together each morning and fixing meals.
Then Helene (Sagnier), the daughter Maguy deserted when a child, turns up and throws the household into a tizzy. The guilty Magay willingly gives Helene what's left of her money to start a business in Paris. Mirko lusts after her, but it's Helene and Stephan who fall in love. This causes great jealousy on Mirko part. He plots to sabotage the relationship.
The Serbian element now takes over the narrative as Stephan and then Mirko return to their homeland to confront their shadowy past, which causes the melodrama to take much too serious a turn and drain the outrageous fun from the movie.
The actors are all committed to these characters, making them all true to themselves even if collectively they are over the top. Production values, especially Jerome Almeras' prowling camera, are aces.
The use of off-season Cannes as a locale amused festival goers in these last few wearying days especially the line "I'm tired of Cannes. I'm leaving." Many in the audience agreed with that sentiment.
