Zack Snyder currently making his own cinematic universe after his tumultuous run in the Dcu with the Rebel Moon films. 2023’s Rebel Moon and its upcoming sequel are Snyder’s own creations and Netflix gave him complete freedom to execute his vision, unlike his days at Warner Bros. While Rebel Moon proved to be underwhelming, it set up an exciting arc for a sequel.

While Zack Snyder may have moved on from his glory days in the Dceu directing and supervising the chaptres of the now-discontinued franchise towards the conclusion that was Zack Snyder’s Justice League, die-hard fans still ponder on all the possibilities that he had in store for us.
Among them, there was always a theory of a Justice League trilogy that was in the works at WB Discovery before the filmmaker left the studios.

In fact, when the events of Zsjl took place, there were quite a few hints at a potential trilogy for the original film, one of which would’ve been the betrayal of the Man of Steel after the alleged death of Lois Lane in the film.

There is a certain inevitability about a film inspired by Hermann Hesse’s novel “Steppenwolf,” first published in German in 1927, and two famous Westerns of the 1950s — John Ford’s “The Searchers,” and Howard Hawks’ “Red River.” The film, also called “Steppenwolf,” has its world premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Big Screen Competition section. Its teaser debuts on Variety exclusively (below).
In acclaimed Kazakh director Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s latest film, two characters who are essentially loners existing outside of the usual moral boundaries of the world come together united in a common task: to save a small boy who has gone missing.
Yerzhanov takes universal themes from Hesse’s novel and the later Hollywood Westerns, to plumb the depths of where man’s spirituality disappears into the depths of his animal origins. To explore what he calls a story of “two different heroes, two opposing characters, who...

I was 10 when I fell in love with Tommy Smothers, who succumbed to cancer on Tuesday at 86. He was my first television hero. He was funny, he was gentle, he was quietly outrageous. And for a pre-teen kid in the 1960s, he was everything I thought a grown-up should be.
Let me back up for a second to note that I was raised in a houseful of liberals bordering on radicals. My parents and siblings were all proudly antiwar when it came to Vietnam. My older sister was the kind who went to love-ins and hung with the hippies, possibly because she was a hippie herself. My mother would bake pot brownies that my sister took to the love-in. Me? I was too young to do much more than get taken along for the ride, but it was made abundantly clear that if I wanted to be a Richmond, I...

Tom Smothers, one-half of The Smothers Brothers, has died at the age of 86 following a battle with cancer.
The National Comedy Center announced his death on behalf of the family, with his younger brother Dick Smothers releasing a statement. “Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner,” Dick said. “I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime together with him, on and off stage, for over 60 years. Our relationship was like a good marriage – the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected one another. We were truly blessed.“
The brothers initially wanted to be folk musicians but quickly realized that they weren’t quite good enough. However, once they began adding a little comedy to their act, it took off. “It was a series of performances when we started out as a duet in Aspen.

Even before the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Dceu’s aspirations of building a cohesive, interconnected universe had come to an abrupt end with the prospect of a big-scale reboot spanning through upcoming live-action and animated ventures. For fans who grew up in the late 1990s, when DC’s diversified animated ventures dominated the pop culture scene, or even earlier than that, when in printed comics DC exemplified absolute dominance in sheer variety and quality of titles, it was inconceivable that its first attempt at live-action world-building would meet a disastrous end—let alone not even come close to replicating the success of the aforementioned mediums. However, even amidst the haphazard, clueless continuity problems, poor reception, and mismanagement, there were silver linings in the form of some iconic moments scattered across sixteen movies and a TV series, which fans will surely remember in years to come. As we bid farewell to Dceu,...

Tom Smothers, who with his younger brother Dick changed the face of comedy with their musical humor and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, died Tuesday in Santa Rosa, California, following a cancer battle. The news was announced by the National Comedy Center, on behalf of Smothers’ family. He was 86.
Tom and Dick Smothers started out as folk musicians in the early ’60s, and soon discovered that, while they were not good enough to be professional musicians, the act worked if they mixed in comedy.
Dick Smothers said in a statement, “Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner. I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime together with him, on and off stage, for over 60 years. Despite sporadic efforts to repair the disastrous and confusing continuity of DC Extended Universe, it was doomed to fail thanks to multiple problems which plagued the shared universe ranging from misinterpretation of source material, interference in creative vision to controversy surrounding actors. The early signs of mismanagement under the contemporary WB regime were apparent during the divisive reception of the first phase of Dceu, and as a result, the universe almost crash-landed after the poor reception of Justice League (Joss Whedon version) back in 2017. However, the one movie that almost single-handedly turned the proverbial tide in the favor of Dceu was James Wan’s Aquaman, which to date stands as the franchise’s most entertaining and highest-grossing entry. In a franchise where a crossover movie of three premier characters couldn’t meet expectations, Aquaman, formerly known as the bottom of ‘Merman’ jokes, became its savior.

On Tuesday night’s episode of “Dancing With the Stars,” Mira Sorvino and her daughter recreated the trio dance from “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” and the first 10 scores were handed out.
Sorvino’s 18-year-0ld daughter Mattea, who is part of a dance company, joined her mom and her partner Gleb Savchenko for a far less goofy version of the much-gif-ed routine from the 1997 comedy. Bruno Tonioli said the routine, which was set to “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper was “beautiful,” and Carrie Ann Inaba said it “tugged on her heartstrings.” It earned the actress, who currently costars on “Shining Vale,” a 22/40 and her first “8” score of the season.

Warning: references to self-harm follow.
"Gen V" is set at a school for superheroes ("Supes") and so naturally features a cast with a wide variety of powers. The most grotesque ability belongs to our lead, Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair); she can telekinetically manipulate blood. So far, we've seen Marie wield her power as a weapon and a healing tool (she keeps someone with a sliced neck from bleeding out).
Marie's powers arrived, naturally, during her first period at age 12. Superpowers as a metaphor for puberty is nothing new (see Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man"). However, this is the cruel world of "The Boys" — Marie couldn't control her powers and accidentally killed her parents. Now, she also uses her powers as part of a self-harm ritual; she keeps a pocket knife handy and is shown repeatedly slicing open her hand palms to pull blood out from the wounds.

Who has a better rogues gallery than Batman? Sure, the X-Men have some greats in Magneto, Stryker, and Mr. Sinister. And Spider-Man’s got the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Mysterio. But none of these baddies can touch the denizens of Arkham Asylum for their variety and malleability. Even if film adaptations keep going back to the same few characters, the psychologically twisted enemies offer room for multiple interpretations, allowing actors to find something different to each version.
But as great as they are, some Batman villains are better than others, allowing for a clear ranking of all the Bat-Baddies.

As much as certain fans couldn't get enough of Zack Snyder's take on the world-famous pantheon of DC superheroes, his trilogy of franchise films always held a glimpse of the original blockbuster epic that has been bubbling up inside of him. Think of those explosive, Krypton-set action scenes in "Man of Steel," the so-called "Knightmare" dream sequence in "Batman v Superman," and the genuinely otherworldly depictions of the villains Darkseid and Steppenwolf going from planet to planet, wrecking entire armies in some of the most exhilarating moments of "Zack Snyder's Justice League." The release of "Rebel Moon," which recently unveiled its sweeping and expansive trailer, will once again give the director a chance to be fully unchained from IP constrictions and simply wild out, for lack of a better phrase.
Part of that freedom afforded by making an original blockbuster epic means coming up with loads of world-building from scratch.

There’s controversy and then there’s comic book movie controversy. While usually its concerning something more lighthearted like the internet losing their minds over some kind casting decision, we sometimes get the darker stuff. Like “shifting an entire studio’s heirarchy” level of craziness. From reported verbal abuse to alleged threatening of careers to a miserable Ben Affleck, there’s a lot of bad that came from Warner’s 2017 film. So today on DC Revisited, we’re diving into the moustache removing and tone lightening of Joss Whedon’s Justice League.
If you think other films in the DC lineup have had controversy then you haven’t seen anything yet because the stuff that goes on here is absolutely nuts. But I should state outright: we’ll deal with the Snyder Cut and all of that surrounded that in a future video. For now, we’ll just focus on the original filming period,...

“The Flash” is getting set to race into theaters, and will make its debut in the United States with preview screenings on Thursday, June 15. Fans of DC movies have been waiting a long time for this one, with DC Studios co-chief James Gunn calling it one of the best superhero movies ever made.
That may be a tad hyperbolic, but critics seem to be enjoying the film. It currently sits at a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and 95% of audiences who have seen early screenings have given the film a thumbs-up. The critical consensus says it’s one of the best DC films in quite a long time, which should be exciting news for DC fans who have routinely seen films based in that universe get panned by audiences and reviewers alike.

One of the major aspects that contemporary pop-culture movie franchises, which rely heavily on interconnected storytelling spanning multiple forms of content, need is coherent world-building that can hook regular viewers easily. Out of the two major comic-book-oriented movie franchises, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has learned the trick and capitalized on it properly from the get-go, but unfortunately, the counterpart of its rival franchise, the DC Extended Universe (Dceu), has time and again faced hurdles in its journey of expansive world-building and eventually reached rock bottom. With the release of the much-anticipated 13th movie of the franchise, The Flash, the Dceu will be officially terminated and make way for a new, more coherent DC Universe (Dcu) under James Gunn’s guidance. The movie itself is going to deal with multiple plotlines from the Dceu itself and also from other storylines that are not directly connected with it, and in order...

“The Flash” races into theaters this weekend, and it’s a lot of movie.
The superhero film promises to be a landmark in the genre by not only being something of a send-off for the “DC Extended Universe” of films but also serving as a reboot that makes way for the new “DC Universe” of films and TV shows. As if that wasn’t enough, “The Flash” is also bringing back some long-time fan favorites and providing a unique revisionist spin on the entire DC universe as we know it by bringing back Michael Keaton as Batman and retelling the events of “Man of Steel”.
After Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) travels back in time to prevent the death of his mother, the world he ends up in is unrecognizable from his own, and he’s forced to save it when a dangerous threat unexpectedly appears. It can seem like a...

Hope. That’s the feeling most fans were left with following the announcement of Warner Bros. Discovery’s slate for the Dcu (DC Universe). Following a decade of inner turmoil over what to do with their largest property, creative conflicts, a revolving door of leadership, the studio finally has a clear path forward with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm of DC Studios.
The announcement of ten new projects across film and television, falling under the designation Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, offer up a great variety of characters and tones, showcasing the vastness of the DC Universe. One of the big takeaways was Gunn’s confirmation that this is not the Gunnverse, and while he is in a leadership position and helping build towards a larger story, the projects won’t all carry his aesthetic or perspective. The closest point of comparison for the Dcu would be...

When "Easy Rider" was released into theaters in the summer of 1969, popular culture had already shifted significantly to reflect the spirit of rebellion swelling up among teenagers across the country. Signifying a real change, it was time for the box office and Hollywood to catch up with the tides; "Easy Rider" would go on to gross 60 million around the world. Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda starred as two free-wheeling bikers from L.A. heading to New Orleans, and "Easy Rider" represented the beginning of counterculture and the death of the sixties, simultaneously. The soundtrack featuring Steppenwolf and The Band was instantly iconic, and the sweeping vistas that Hopper and Fonda rode through helped to define a road trip movie for a new generation. Then, the film's tragic ending served as a reminder that America wasn't really the land of the free, after all.

Frank Galati, the Tony Award-winning director of Broadway’s The Grapes of Wrath and nominee for Ragtime, died Monday night. He was 79.
A cause of death was not immediately available.
Galati, who was an associate director at Chicago’s famed Goodman Theatre from 1986 to 2008 and a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company since 1985, was Oscar-nominated, along with co-writer Lawrence Kasdan, for the 1988 screenplay adaptation of Anne Tyler’s novel The Accidental Tourist.
Galati’s 1990 stage adaptation of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath won the Tony Award for Best Play; Galati also won the award that year for Best Direction. The acclaimed production, which debuted at Steppenwolf before transferring to Broadway, starred Gary Sinise, Terry Kinney, and Lois Smith in Tony-nominated performances.
“Frank had a profound impact on Steppenwolf, and all of us, over the years,” said Steppenwolf’s co-artistic directors Glenn Davis and Audrey Francis in a joint statement.

It's happening. Henry Cavill is back as Superman in the Dcu, and a sequel to "Man of Steel" is already in early development. He made his official return known to the world with his cameo appearance in "Black Adam," which featured Cavill back in the red and blue suit. However, with the Kryptonian hero set to make his return to the forefront of the superhero genre, one lingering question remains in the back of my mind. Why is there a desire to use John Williams' "Superman" theme instead of the equally-excellent "Man of Steel" score to re-introduce Cavill's character to the world?
I mean, don't get me wrong. Williams' seminal music defined Superman for an entire generation for a very good reason. It is an orchestral delight that is profoundly tied to Christopher Reeves' iteration of the character. But that is why I find it confusing that the "Man of Steel...

It might well be the perfect role for Dwayne Johnson but can Jaume Collet-Serra’s violent and occasionally knuckle-headed film really get DC back on track?
Dwayne Johnson is here to claim his throne as Hollywood’s greatest action hero, and Black Adam seems like the perfect vehicle. Powered by ancient Egyptian gods this 5,000-year old costumed titan arrives in the DC universe with the aim of restoring the Marvel-style inter-connectivity between superheroes that hit a stumbling block when the original 2017 Justice League movie failed to get anyone excited about Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman teaming up to take down the nefarious Steppenwolf.
It’s got umpteen members of the newly introduced Justice Society of America, from Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman to Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate. It introduces an entirely new comic book nation in the form of the oppressed, Egypt-like Kahndaq. And it even sees the return of Henry Cavill’s Superman,...

The official position of Warner Bros. when it comes to Dceu movie continuity (inasmuch as that is even actually a thing these days) is that the beleaguered theatrical version of Justice League is the one that is official canon. The extended director’s cut known as Zack Snyder’s Justice League that you can watch on HBO Max is basically just a courtesy to the filmmaker and fans (not to mention a way for them to drive HBO Max subscriptions at launch). That being said, even as someone who doesn’t consider himself much of a Snyder fan, this is by far the more coherent, richer, more ambitious Justice League film, and the one that did its damndest to expand the horizons of the Dceu at the time.

This article contains Black Adam spoilers.
You hear him before you see him. A familiar subsonic whoosh that when you think about it, can only mean one thing. There aren’t that many heroes in the Dceu who can fly, after all, and one of them is already on screen. It doesn’t hurt that Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson has been teasing his arrival for years: Henry Cavill is back as Superman. Here’s what it all means for the Dceu…
Amanda Waller and The Suicide Squad
Right before Superman arrives, the newly-minted Black Adam (in a truly awesome comics-accurate costume) gets a message from Argus director (and Suicide Squad taskmaster) Amanda Waller about how she sees his place in the Dceu. Waller, of course, has no fear whatsoever of bad folks in the DC Universe, considering that she has long managed Task Force X, better known as The Suicide Squad.

This post contains spoilers for episode 8 of "House of the Dragon."
Religion has not been a major theme in the first few episodes of "House of the Dragon," as the show focused more on familial infighting and the chaos that encircled House Targaryen. While chaos still reigns over the titular house, the latest episode, "The Lord of the Tides," brings Westerosi religion into the mix. The Faith of the Seven emerges as a new way of life in Westeros, which is symbolic of a tectonic shift in power that also comes with significant political implications.
After Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) and Daemon (Matt Smith) visit King's Landing after six years, they notice that their home has been unceremoniously stripped of visual elements that are a reminder of House Targaryen's power and prestige. Instead, the halls are adorned with the Seven-Pointed Star, which symbolizes the holy text of the Faith of the Seven.

The third season of "The Umbrella Academy" saw the Hargreeves siblings transported into a parallel world where they were forced to face more apocalyptic threats and a new group of peculiar UA siblings, The Sparrows - while also tangling with their own complex relationships. Now, Netflix has revealed the show has been renewed for a fourth season, which will also be its last.
"I'm so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of 'The Umbrella Academy' will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings' journey we began five years ago," showrunner Steve Blackman told Netflix's Tudum on Aug. 25. Films from Maze Pictures, producer of Colin Firth-starrer “The Happy Prince,” and from Basis Berlin, behind Oscar-nominated doc feature “Of Father and Sons,” figure among the six pix in post to be highlighted at Locarno’s First Look on German Cinema, which is shaping up as one of the festival’s industry highlights.
Maze and Basis Berlin will unveil what look on paper like the section’s biggest commercial plays: Drug scene drama “Three Lives Long” and Iran-set social thriller “Empty Nets.”
First Look’s most classic art house play may be Milena Aboyan’s “Elaha,” a Kurd bride-to-be emancipation drama set in contemporary Germany.
Two other titles have more of an indie tenor: Pan-Europe road movie “Arthur & Diana” and farewell dinner dramedy “One Last Evening.”
“Life is Not a Competition, But I’m Winning” weighs in as an arch film essay from queer feminist activist Julia Fuhr Mann.

It’s hardly a secret at this point: The Flash movie will see the return of not just one Batman but two. The first is Michael Keaton, who makes a shocking comeback as the original big-screen Dark Knight, this time to mentor Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen during the speedster’s adventure through the DC multiverse. It’s unexpected, to say the least.
But even more surprising is the fact that Ben Affleck is also reprising his role as the Dceu’s Caped Crusader for another go at the character he initially left behind just a few short years ago after 2017’s troubled Justice League. The topic of many reports and much fan speculation, Affleck has finally set the record straight about his return, confirming that he’s back — and recent set photos confirm it’s indeed in the cape and cowl.

When appraised in the cold light of day, The Wild Life (1984) stands as a fairly minor ’80s teen comedy, lacking the flash of broader, more risqué fare like Porky’s (1982) or the great characters that populated instant classics of the genre like 1982’s Fast Times At Ridgemont High (more on that in a second), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), or one of this critic’s personal favorites, Real Genius (1985). So why are we talking about the film’s recent Kino Lorber Blu-ray release at all?

Adulterous housewives, CIA bosses – Joan Allen has played them all with consummate skill. Now, in Stephen King adaptation Lisey’s Story, she’s turned her hand to visceral horror
In some ways, Joan Allen is like an American Gary Oldman; wait, stay with it.
