NBA Struggles To Find The Balance Between Free Speech And China’s Sensitivities

  • Deadline
The National Basketball Association continued to dig deeper into a public relations hole today, as an executive shut down a question from a CNN anchor on the league’s China problem.

CNN’s Christina Macfarlane was cut off at a Japan press conference after an exhibition game between the Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors. The Rockets have been at the center of a dispute that started when one of its executives, general manager Daryl Morey, tweeted support for the pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong.

Macfarlane attempted to ask Rockets stars James Harden and Russell Westbrook whether they would feel comfortable speaking out on political and social issues in the future after the uproar from China in reaction to Morey and the events of this week. The unidentified Rockets media relations person stopped them from answering – even though Harden appeared ready to respond – saying that “basketball questions only” were the only permissible path.

WGA Makes Its Case For Requiring Agencies To Turn Over Writers’ Contracts and Invoices

  • Deadline
As the WGA’s ongoing battle with Hollywood’s talent agents nears the end of its sixth month, the guild is making the case for one of its demands that’s kept many mid-tier agencies from signing its new Code of Conduct.

That code, which went into effect on April 13 when the guild ordered all of its members to fire their agents who refuse to sign it, bans packaging fees after one year and prohibits agency affiliations with corporately related production entities.

Many mid-tier agencies, which don’t do much packaging and have no production affiliates, nonetheless have been reluctant to sign up because they don’t want to have to turn over their clients’ contract information and invoices, as is required by the new code. The WGA, however, now is reminding members why that’s still a key demand.

The union said:

“One of the wonkiest issues in this

NBA, Politicians Weigh in as Fallout From Rockets Gm’s Hong Kong Tweet Grows

  • The Wrap
A tweet by Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey in support of Hong Kong protesters has created tensions between the NBA and the Chinese government.

On Friday, Morey tweeted his support of Hong Kong, writing in a since-deleted tweet: “Fight for Freedom. Stand With Hong Kong.” It was immediately criticized by the Chinese government. The Chinese Basketball Association (Cba) suspended all cooperation with the Rockets, which is among the most popular in China. The Chinese Media Group, the country’s state-controlled media arm, said it was “deeply shocked by the erroneous comments” made by Morey. Tencent Sports, which signed a five-year, $1.5 billion to continue as the NBA’s streaming partner in China, said it would no longer offer live-streams of Rockets games and suspended all news coverage of the team.

The fallout from Morey’s tweet threatens to strain what has been a very lucrative business relationship with China, while

The NBA Chooses China’s Money Over Hong Kong’s Human Rights

Daryl Morey did the right thing — at first.

In a Friday night tweet that he has since deleted, the Houston Rockets general manager expressed support for the legions of protesters who have taken to the streets of Hong Kong.

The demonstrations started as a protest against a new Chinese extradition bill that opponents believe would lead to the disappearance of Hong Kong’s critics of the Chinese regime, as well as infringe upon the limited independence the semi-autonomous region enjoys. The bill was pulled in September, but the protesters have additional demands,

‘EastEnders’ Star Danny Dyer On Going From “Cool & Cult” To Primetime Soap Star & Fronting UK Remake Of ‘The Wall’
British actor Danny Dyer has claimed that he wasn’t really “acknowledged” for his acting until starring in BBC primetime soap EastEnders.

The star of gritty British dramas such as The Football Factory and Vendetta highlighted the “snobbery” around UK soaps, which remain some of the highest rated scripted series on British television.

Dyer joined the BBC One series, which is based around a community in East London, in 2013. He has since picked up National Television Awards and TV Choice Awards for his role as pub landlord Mick Carter. Speaking on ITV’s The Jonathan Ross Show, he said, “It’s mad because towards soap there is a bit of snobbery and I think I was part of that mob when I was making films, you think you’re cool and cult. I never really got acknowledged for being an actor until I went into a soap.”

California Passes “Game Changer” Law Allowing College Athletes To Make Money From Name & Likeness
There was a real-world vibe on LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s Uninterrupted talk show The Shop today as California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill that gives the state’s college student-athletes the ability to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness.

The Fair Pay to Play Act (Sb 206) is the first of its kind in the U.S. It addresses the Ncaa’s longstanding ban on student athletes earning compensation from their association with college sports even though their respective school can make millions from their athletic performance.

Newsom signed the legislation live on The Shop alongside James — a vocal proponent of the bill — Carter, UCLA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi, Wnba star Diana Taurasi, former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon, James’ agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group and the bill’s co-sponsor, state Sen. Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley).

NBA 2K20 Review

It can be tough to write about the latest yearly sports releases. Year to year differences are often minuscule, and the specter of micro-transactions has been a drag on the genre. 2K Sports’ NBA 2K franchise is no different in either regard. It’s been near the top of the genre for quite some time now, largely due to the excellent gameplay. In recent years, however, the rampant micro-transactions featured in the franchise have garnered much controversy. As you may expect, NBA 2K20 continues straddling the line between perfection and pain.

Unlike last year’s edition, which added the Takeover system, NBA 2K20 is pretty static this year. Definitely not a bad thing, as the series’ gameplay remains as enjoyable and fluid as ever. No other basketball franchise has ever made the sport feel as good as it does as Visual Concepts has. There are improvements to be found, though,
