If you live in New Jersey, then you grow up your entire life with the stink of the Jersey Devil on your skin. It’s “our” urban legend. It’s our hockey team. It fascinates children and has always kept me just a little curious as to what really sparked the whole myth to inferno levels. I’ve heard the mythology and have enjoyed telling my own children about the Leed’s Devil. Every time we drive the New Gretna I pull out the, “so this is where it all happened” bait. Bells immediately asks what happened and I get to try to scare her just a little. The Barrens from horror veteran Darren Lynn Bousman attempts to take the tale of the Jersey Devil to a new audience, flesh out the story and maybe, just maybe… find what we Jersey natives have been looking for as we travel southward through our state.

Director/writer: Andrew Paquin.
A lot can be said for the psychological thriller. This genre uses mind games to keep the viewer off balance, while often asking more questions than it answers. One of several questions that first time director Andrew Paquin's film Open House asks is: why are two serial killers laying waste to a quiet neighbourhood? As well, why are a brother and sister killing team sleeping together? Finally, how come so many victims in horror and thrillers ask the question: "why are you doing this?" This reviewer will answer the first question, while tip-toeing around the second and then delve into the third.
As a little more background, Andrew Paquin is the brother of Anna Paquin ("True Blood") and Andrew used his house as the primary set, for this film. All of the action within Open House occurs at this location.

So that time of year is upon us where we over at Big Daddy Horror Reviews get under way with the first annual Big Daddies. Did the mortgage and housing crisis inspire this one? In the Psycho/The Strangers-style thriller Open House, now available on demand and DVD from Lionsgate, a demented couple (The Hurt Locker’s Brian Geraghty and Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer) squat in comfortable homes for sale and murder all those who get in the way. Rachel Blanchard plays a survivor hiding in the basement trying to outwit the maniacs living upstairs. At last spring’s Tribeca Film Festival, Fango’s Tony Timpone’s interviewed stars Geraghty and Blanchard (see here and here). Today our editor emeritus concludes his chat with Open House’s writer/director Andrew Paquin (see part one of Paquin interview here), brother/brother-in-law of True Blood hotties Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, respectively. The two actors have cameos in the gory home invasion thriller, which marks Paquin’s directorial debut. Happy house hunting!

During her years on the space saga "Battlestar Galactica," as Cylon Number Six (a line of androids with many copies), Tricia Helfer played, among other things, a seductive "angel," a fierce warrior and a mother-to-be.
Her taste for strong roles continued when she returned to Earth (and to Los Angeles from Vancouver, Canada), to take up her first job as a series regular since "Battlestar."
On TNT's sophomore undercover-police drama "Dark Blue," airing Wednesdays, Helfer plays FBI Agent Alex Rice, who thought she was just working one case in a joint task force with the Lapd -- and also thought she was just having a one-night stand with team leader Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott) -- but instead the task force is continuing, and she's stayed on to run it.
"She's smart enough to know that she can't just come in and take over," Helfer tells Zap2it. "But her say is the final say.

The theatrical trailer for Open House appeared on the Blu-ray disc before the feature actually began, and at first glance, Open House epitomized everything I hate about modern day “horror” films. I am sickened by filmmakers who sexualize violence, those who want audiences to drool and get off to beautiful people begging for their lives like the victims in the Hostel series or other torture porns. I thought that I would be suffering through a knock-off of Hostel/Hostel 2/Human Centipede when I reached into my refrigerator for another beer, but I was wrong. Open House is not torture porn. If it was torture porn, then it would at least be somewhat interesting, if sickeningly so. Instead, Open House is a shell of a movie with nothing to offer in story, performances, or special effects. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Open House has nothing...

A strange but not entirely unsatisfying mixture of sly social commentary and straight slasher flick, Andrew Paquin's Open House is hardly the scariest or most original horror flick you'll come across, but this indie feature (which premiered earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival) boasts a polished veneer, a tone that wavers between ferocious and slightly askew, and more than enough gory stuff to keep the splat fans happy. Toss in a few very strong performances, a few familiar faces you may enjoy (including the director's sister, Anna Paquin), and a nice tightening of the tension once Act III kicks in, and you have a "straight to video" horror flick that actually has a little artistry to it. Hardly a...

“Open House” is a slasher movie from Andrew Paquin, the big brother of “True Blood’s” Anna Paquin, who co-stars in the film alongside her real-life beau (and fellow “True Blood” actor) Stephen Moyer. The couple are actually supporting characters — the stars are Tricia Helfer and Brian Geraghty as a psycho couple who uses Rachel Blanchard’s open house as an excuse to kill lots of people with big knives. It beats paying rent, that’s for sure. Check out a red band trailer for the movie below. A couple on the verge of a nasty divorce attempt to sell their empty love nest and move on with their lives, separately. After a successful open house they are horrified to discover, days later, that a potential buyer didn’t leave their home. Open House is a Lionsgate Home Entertainment acquisition, which now has some poster art showing the principal actors, Brian Geraghty, Rachel Blanchard, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, above a mysterious, dilapidated house. This film had a world premiere a the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival (Uhm) and this film, involving incestous, home-invading syblings, will go straight to DVD in January, 2011. A re-post of the film's trailer is also inside along with cast and crew details.

HBO’s highly-acclaimed and ratings record-breaking drama series, "True Blood" will premiere its third season on June 13th, featuring the score of composer Nathan Barr. HorrorBid got a chance to catch up with the busy composer to chat about "True Blood" and his score for the highly anticipated Eli Roth produced "The Last Exorcism"...
The award-winning composer arranges all the music, and performs the majority of the instrumental parts from his own private home studio in Topanga Canyon. “I've dusted off my dulcimer and a couple of other strange and obscure instruments that I never thought I'd have the chance to use and incorporated them into the score, giving the show some fresh musical notes while maintaining that True Blood sound,” he said.

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer appear in horror flick 'Open House.' Think I'll stick to 'True Blood.'
Looks like Open House, a horror movie that features Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer and is about a real estate venture gone terribly wrong, will be coming soon to a theater near you. (Variety reported earlier today that LionsGate division Grindstone Entertainment has picked up all domestic distribution rights.) Despite their presence in the trailer (and every news release regarding Open House), the True Blood costars (and real-life couple) don’t seem to have very big parts in the flick, which was directed by Anna’s brother Andrew Paquin. My girl crush is about to come tumbling out. I kid you not. But can you blame me? We are talking about Tricia Helfer here. That face, that voice… enough to melt even girly knees. Cast Tricia as a killer and Bonus!
The movie in question is House, a film that recently premiered at Tribeca and was, even more recently, picked up by Lionsgate. Directed by Andrew Paquin, this may well be a case of siblings pulling favours but if it brings us Tricia Helfer, I’m ok with that. The film stars Helfer and Brian Geraghty as killers that terrorise a neighbourhood, killing everyone that comes knocking, including (from the looks of things) Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and Rachel Blanchard.
Honestly, this trailer isn’t particularly awesome but my Tricia love is a little blinding and though the film doesn't look like it'll offer anything new, I’ll see it.

Covering this year's Tribeca Film Festival, my reactions ranged from admiring incredible story telling (Please Give, Legacy) to absolutely hating movies that truly shouldn't be seen by anyone (Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives). One film that took me by surprise was first time writer-director Andrew Paquin's Open House, a movie that from the outside appears to be a simple home invasion horror story, but takes a unique perspective that separates it from the bunch. Many films from the festival will likely never see a wide American release, but, thanks to Grindstone Entertainment, Open House won't be one of those films. THR reports that the company, a division of Lionsgate, has picked up the film for distribution in North America. The film stars Rachel Blanchard as a woman whose home is taken over by a sadistic couple, played by Brian Geraghty and Tricia Helfer. Rather than telling the story of the captive,...

The pic also stars Brian Geraghty as prim and taciturn David, forced for years to watch over his sexually predatory partner Lila and her violent urges. David longs for human connection and a less violent existence, and when a would-be victim becomes a chance at redemption, he is torn between his humanity and the only life he's ever known. The film played the Tribeca Film Festival this month and we've got a review here for Johnne Marrone.

Going into the Tribeca Film Festival, I was under the impression that Michael Winterbottom.s The Killer Inside Me would be considered the most brutal film being shown. While that still may be the case, Andrew Paquin.s Open House certainly gives it a run for its money. Following a break-up with her boyfriend, Alice (Rachel Blanchard) has decided to sell her Los Angeles home. While she.s at work, her realtor (Gabriel Olds) hosts an open house, and unknowingly lets in David (Brian Geraghty), who proceeds to find a crawl space in the basement and hide. After returning home, Alice is taken hostage by both David and his sadistic accomplice Lila (Tricia Helfer). Keeping her as his secret in the basement, Alice soon begins to realize the intensely strained and abusive relationship between the two killers, eventually leading David to see Alice as a way out. The true star...

I hear a whole lot of people walked out of the press screening for Open House, which I find very surprising. Maybe it's just that I am not a regular viewer of -- nor a fan of, really -- the home invasion subgenre, but compared to what I have seen (including the original Funny Games, The Strangers and I guess Panic Room counts?), it wasn't that much worse. In fact, there's plenty that I enjoyed in Open House, including the creepy performance by Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker), the refreshingly minimal amount of torture/abuse and the slow, suspenseful pacing of the familiar yet nonetheless mysterious plot.
Written and directed by Andrew Paquin (brother of Anna, who appears briefly, as does her True Blood co-star and fiancee, Stephen Moyer), the thriller takes us exclusively into the setting of an on-the-market L.A. home -- including the hot tub in the...

If ever there was an argument for not providing 'open houses' when trying to sell your residence, Open House provides it. A taut, minimalist horror film that winds and bends its way further and further into insanity, the pic becomes a portrait of David (Brian Geraghty) and Lila (Tricia Helfer), two psychopathic killers who move into and take over the home of Alice (Rachel Blanchard), who, unbeknownst to Lila, David is keeping locked in the crawlspace, alive. As David and Lila match wits with one another over whether or not David will flee their destructive relationship, and Alice does everything she can to escape, the film spirals towards a shocking climax. TribecaFilm.com: Tell us a little bit about your film, Open House. Andrew Paquin: Open House is a horror or psychological thriller. It's about a woman who's trying to sell her house and she has an open house event, and someone comes to the open house and he hides in the basement and then takes her captive after he emerges in the night. That's really just how the film starts. What it's really about is what happens after that - in many ways, it's the point of the film: What would happen if you subvert some of the standard conventions of a horror film? Instead of the monsters wear[ing] a mask through the whole movie, what happens...

The popular fest, which is branching out to include an online element this year with Tribeca Film Festival Virtual (click here to learn more), runs from April 21 through May 2, 2010. Alex Gibney's latest documentary, a portrait of former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, who resigned his post in 2008 because of a sex scandal, will be spotlighted at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, which runs from April 21 to May 2 in New York.
The currently untitled film from the director of the Oscar-winning "Taxi to the Dark Side," will screen as a work-in-progress as one of three special events that festival organizers unveiled today.
"I think people will be really surprised," said David Kwok, the festival's director of programming. "It doesn't just focus on the scandal. It's more comprehensive than that, looking at Eliot Spitzer as a person and at his entire career."
Also playing in the fest's Special Events section are David Lean's 1965 epic "Doctor Zhivago," marking its 45th anniversary with a new restoration that will be released by Warner Home Video, and a work-in-progress screening of the doc "The Western Front,...

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer have made waves on HBO's hit vampire series "True Blood". Their on-screen relationship as an inter-species vampire/human couple then became a case of life imitating art (without all the vampire stuff) as the two are now engaged to be married in real life. But it looks like these two just can't stand to be away from each other on or off the screen as Dread Central reports that they have both been cast in Andrew Paquin's upcoming thriller Open House, the story of a couple who discover that days after an open house one potential buyer of their luxurious home never left. And no, it's not a vampire. Open House is directed by Anna Paquin's brother Andrew Paquin who most recently produced the Renee Zellweger romantic comedy New in Town but is a first-time director. The cast for Open House also includes actors Tricia Helfer,...
