Capathia Jenkins is the new kid in town. The seasoned stage actress arrived on the scene for the Broadway production of “Newsies,” much to her surprise.“My agent called me in December and said they wanted to see me for ‘Newsies,’ and I thought, ‘Really?’” Jenkins remembers. She didn’t see the show in its world premiere at Paper Mill Playhouse last fall and was curious about the direction of that production. However, composer Alan Menken, lyricist Jack Feldman, and bookwriter Harvey Fierstein have reenvisioned the character, and Jenkins is excited about making the part her own.“She’s more a singer,” she says, adding that she loves the new song “That’s Rich,” which Menken and Feldman added for the main stem. “She literally has more of a presence.”Back Stage spoke with Jenkins about her preparation for “Newsies” and how she manages longevity in her career.Back Stage:...

The stage veterans, who have appeared in 16 Broadway shows combined, play burlesque theater owner Medda and Jack Kelly’s archnemesis Pulitzer in “Newsies.” Dossett says working with young actors invigorates him as a performer.“It’s so fun to see their unbridled joy,” he says. “I remember back in ’78, I was always one of the youngest people in the company, and now I’m kind of the old guy. I kind of embrace that.

Long ago and far away I called Simon and Garfunkel "God's duo" (they had some pretty stiff competition -- Jan and Dean, Sutherland and Pavarotti, among others). These days, I'd add to that list Louis Rosen and Capathia Jenkins, whose travels along a constantly extending musical road have taken them (and me and a host of their growing cadre of fans) from the Southside of Chicago to the racy love poems of Nikki Giovanni. On their latest album, "The Ache of Possibility" (Di-Tone Records DT225) Rosen, who composes and writes the lyrics, thickens his musical roux while continuing his collaboration with the poet. Four of the 12 songs on this exquisitely produced CD are tunes set to Giovanni's words. One of these, "Love in Short Supply, A Statement on...
