Despite the pandemic uncertainties, the annual London Palestine Film Festival (Lpff) returns with arguably the best programme of films in years. Lpff 2020 is excited to offer a mix of both in-cinema screenings and online streams of the latest films about Palestine.
This year has brought an astonishing number of high-production and thought-provoking features, documentaries and artist moving image straight off the Venice, Berlin, and Nyon red carpets. Almost entirely made up of UK premieres, romantic dramas (Beyond Heaven Earth; Gaza Mon Amour), intricate investigative works (Letter to a Friend; Triple Chaser), dark humour (200 Metres), innovative cinema (An Unusual Cinema) and hard-hitting documentaries the programme is sure to satisfy audiences by challenging political narratives and cinematic forms.

This year’s Berlinale is full of features from filmmakers all around that world that have Dutch producers on board. Some are documentaries, some are dramas, but each one has a Dutch imprint. Geoffrey Macnab from The Independent reports.
‘Monos’ by Alejandro Landes and Alexis Dos Santos
Monos, directed by Alejandro Landes and Alexis Dos Santos, is screening both in Sundance and Berlin. This is a kidnap drama involving child soldiers set deep in the Colombian jungle. Amsterdam-based Lemming Film discovered the project at CineMart in 2016. “We were immediately drawn by the premise of the project and of course by directors Alejandro Landes and Alexis Dos Santos, whose work so far has been really impressive,” says Lemming’s CEO Leontine Petit.
There are several other co-producers on board, among them La Franja from Colombia itself, Campo Cine from Argentina, Mutante Cine in Uruguay, and Pandora from Germany. Petit knew it...

Danish documaker Simon Lereng Wilmont’s Oscar-shortlisted “The Distant Barking of Dogs,” which observes the impact of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine on the life of a 10-year-old Ukrainian boy, encapsulates why, just as with fictional features, Danish docs are thriving.
This fly-on-the-wall portrait that unfolds from the boy’s perspective without a word of narration “deftly weaves a precise coming-of-age narrative into its morally urgent anti-war tableau,” wrote Variety critic Guy Lodge. Besides stemming from a special sensitivity for the children’s universe that Danish cinema is known for, the pluriprized doc is also emblematic of how local documakers are honing their craft, pushing boundaries, and taking their works to new heights.
“In Denmark they are really experimenting with various forms of documentary storytelling in terms of making the narratives dramaturgically like feature films,” says Petri Kemppinen, head of the Oslo-based Nordisk Film & TV Fund.

Near record levels of inward investment are boosting the local industry.
As the Dutch film industry comes together at International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr), there is much to be optimistic about in 2019.
The local industry is experiencing near record levels of inward investment as a location and post-production hub and Dutch co-production is blossoming. There may have been a slight - 0.8% - decline in admissions to 35.7 million cinema visitors in the Netherlands in 2018 but box office revenue has risen due to an increase in ticket prices.

The-Guilty
Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights from TrustNordisk to Gustav Möller’s Danish thriller The Guilty and plans a 2018 theatrical release for one of the most widely acclaimed selections in Park City this year.
The World Dramatic Competition entry became an immediate talking point when it screened for press and industry before Sunday’s (January 21) world premiere in Park City, and has sparked interest in English-language remake rights.
Jakob Cedergren stars in Möller’s directorial feature debut as an embattled police officer demoted to desk work as an emergency dispatcher.
When he receives a call from a kidnapped mother who hangs up abruptly, the officer is pulled into a race against time as he begins to unravel what is at stake.

While there are plenty of single location movies, the great ones make you forget that you’re just in one place. Gustav Möller‘s “The Guilty,” which makes its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, aims to keep you on the edge of your seat, and make you forget that its ingenious concept involves nothing more than a dispatcher trying to solve a twisty mystery.
Starring Jakob Cedergren, Jessica Dinnage, Johan Olsen, and Omar Shargawi, the film follows police officer Asger Holm, who is demoted to desk work, and expects a sleepy beat as an emergency dispatcher.

Jordanian producer Rula Nasser has boarded Egyptian filmmaker Kasem Kharsa’s feature debut Shelter.
The project, which has been developed through the Sundance Institute, Binger FilmLab and Torino screenwriting workshops, revolves around an amnesiac stranded in the ghettoes of Beirut. In the process of trying to piece his life back together, he discovers his connection to a genocide that took place decades earlier.
“It’s strong story from an interesting talent who is living between the Us and the Middle East,” explained Nasser, who plans to structure the project as a co-production and shoot in Jordan in 2016. Kharsa’s credits include well-received short films such as Paper Dress. Shelter received a development grant from Doha Film Institute in 2012.

Mad’s distribution slate also includes Arabian Nights title Love, Theft And Other Entanglements, directed by Muayad Alayan, and short films Ave Maria and 5th Floor Room 52.
Mad, which deals directly with cinemas across the region, is planning limited releases of up to 20 screens for each film. “Our strategy is to prolong the life of each film in the cinema, which is easier to manage when you have a smaller number of screens,” said Mad CEO Alaa Karkouti.

Perhaps fittingly, Amir Amirani’s new documentary We Are Many characterises not only the notion of mass public protest, but the rise of the political documentary itself. In it, we travel back to 9/11, what many commentators have since referred to as The End of History regarding national security and privacy, which gave birth to a protest movement that has manifested itself in countless ways over the last thirteen years. Equally so it has given thousands of hours’ worth of material for filmmakers and activists to reach a bulk audience with.
The attacks on the Twin Towers were a prelude to the Iraq War, the main focus of Amirani’s film, and he invites academics (including perpetual talking head Noam Chomsky), as well as politicians from Clare Short to David Blunkett, to speak about the social, political and moral implications of the 2003 global protest against the decision to invade. It’s...

I mention it, not necessarily to pit both films against each other, but given all the buzz around Jehane Noujaim's The Square, including its Oscar nomination this year, I thought I'd toss 1/2 Revolution into the "Egyptian Revolution documentary" pot, since, for one reason or another, it didn't receive anywhere near the same kind of attention (press, awards, etc) as The Square has, and is just as good a documentary on the subject matter, and deserves to be seen. A Sundance Film Festival 2012 selection, 1/2 Revolution (directed by Omar Shargawi and Karim El Hakim) is...

There is, apparently, still time for Lars von Trier to round up more actors to take part in Nymphomaniac, which he’s now busy filming. He’s taking some from the veteran pile and some newcomers. So Willem Dafoe, Udo Kier and Jean-Marc Barr will know what they’re in for, but Kate Ashfield, Caroline Goodall, Kate Ashfield, Saskia Reeves and Omar Shargawi are even now getting their first taste of working for von Trier.Von Trier is shooting Nymphomaniac as two feature length films, planning both soft-core and hard-core versions. Charlotte Gainsbourg stars as Jo, a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac beaten up and left for dead in an alley. She’s found and cared for by an older bachelor (Stellan Skarsgard) and ends up telling him her complicated life story.Von Trier already has an impressive cast roster to work with, including Shia Labeouf, Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman and Connie Nielsen,...

Manderlay and Antichrist’s Willem Dafoe is re-teaming with so-called ‘controversial’ Danish director Lars von Trier for erotic drama Nymphomaniac, currently shooting in and around Cologne, Germany.
Joining the final round of announcement are: German actor Udo Kier, who has appeared in most of Lars von Trier’s films; French actor Jean-Marc Barr, who worked with von Trier on Dogville, Dancer in the Dark and Breaking the Waves, as well as Caroline Goodall (Schindler’s List) and Kate Ashfield (Shaun of the Dead), Saskia Reeves (Butterfly Kiss) and lastly, Danish writer/director/actor Omar Shargawi (R).
However, Nicole Kidman, who had long been rumored as another possible addition to the Nymphomaniac cast, has dropped out.

With production now underway, the cast for Lars Von Trier's upcoming hard- and soft-core erotic drama "The Nymphomaniac" is in flux, with some regulars coming on and one big name dropping out. Rumored since last year, Willem Dafoe ("Manderlay," "Antichrist") and Jean-Marc Barr ("Dogville," "Breaking The Waves") are among the director's previous collaborators to join, while Nicole Kidman, previously slated for a small role, has dropped out citing scheduling conflicts with her currently shooting "Grace Of Monaco." You win some, you lose some, we suppose, and as a reader suggested (and it's probably a good guess), we think the recently added Uma Thurman is her replacement. The new actors to join Von Trier's set are mostly unfamiliar names: Caroline Goodall, Kate Ashfield, Saskia Reeves and Omar Shargawi. As you know, the movie tracks the sex life of a woman (Charlotte Gainsbourg) who recounts her...

These great documentary films have a simple lesson: effective political protest needs good organisation and smart messaging
So, late last year, I said – to some controversy here – that the violent crackdown against the Occupy movement in the United States represented the first salvos of a civil war initiated by political and allied economic elites against protesters in a nascent movement whose still-not-fully articulated agenda would represent a threat to their unmediated and untransparent hold on profits. And a civil war it has indeed turned out to be.
Over the weekend, 2,000 citizens marched in support of Occupy Oakland – and were met by flash grenades and, some witnesses assert, rubber bullets. The Los Angeles Police Department is engaging in training exercises with the Us military. At a parallel march in support, in New York City, a new apparition – large groups of masked men – joined the protesters, which is, globally, a sign that...

At the Sundance Film Festival's Moving the Masses panel, which considered how the media can best be utilized for progressive change, Naomi Wolf had a message for her fellow activists: Ur Doing It Wrong. Despite the headlines generated by her Occupy Wall Street arrest, Wolf was arguably the panelist with the least amount of hardcore on-the-ground activist experience: Omar Shargawi directed the documentary "1/2 Revolution," which looks at the demonstrations in Tahrir Square, while Lois Gibbs was a Love Canal environmental activist featured in the environmental doc "A Fierce Green Fire" and AIDS activist Peter Staley is a signficant voice in "How to Survive a Plague." But Wolf, who is the bestselling author of "The Beauty Myth" and "Give Me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries," was the panel's agent provacateur (a phrase whose plural form Wolf took the time to pretentiously mispronounce in French). ...

Today's the day Sundance 2012 opens and Salon's Andrew O'Hehir pretty well sums up why those who've written the festival off completely might want to reconsider:
If Robert Redford's annual celebration of independent film is no longer the cutting-edge cultural phenomenon it appeared to be in the 1990s, it also isn't the wretched-excess Sundance of the early 2000s, when the overly precious downtown of Park City, Utah, was bedecked with 'gifting lounges' that attracted all kinds of entertainment and sports celebrities who had no plausible connection to the independent-film business. Current festival director John Cooper took the reins from longtime director Geoff Gilmore (a charismatic and polarizing figure) two and a half years ago, just as the national economy was going south. Whether by coincidence, strategy or an inevitable consequence of structural change, Cooper's first two festivals have felt leaner and more focused on actual films and filmmakers — and...

I love the Sundance Film Festival. The winners of the fest normally have long legs enough to last all the way until the Oscars. This year, for example, "Pariah" was one of the breakout hits from Sundance, and the Dee Rees coming-of-age flick is being distributed by Focus this month. Its star, Adepero Oduye, recently received the Best Female Lead nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards.
So now, Sundance has unveiled its in-competition slate for 2012 and the films, as always, are quite intriguing. The fest runs from Jan. 19th to the 29th in Park City, Utah. Check out the full list below:
