Sex. Paranoia. Betrayal. These are the are among the first words that come to mind when we talk about the cult horror hit, It Follows. A movie that serves as a refreshing splash of originality and imagination that has gone on to become a mainstay in the Blu-ray players of horror lovers everywhere. While it’s a movie that certainly receives its share of praise for being fresh with its concept and quite creative in its depiction of the movie’s antagonistic entity- it also doesn’t seem to get the analysis it deserves beyond those initial praises. While the freshness and high-quality storytelling are certainly not up for debate in my book- this movie is awesome- I must say that beyond all the sex, paranoia, and betrayal, there’s also a surprising layer of tenderness, friendship, and empowerment that carry it through the trending page and into the pop culture zeitgeist forever.

Horror movies in any era reflect people's collective anxieties. Sometimes, the source of the horror - be it a psycho killer in a slasher or a mythical monster in a supernatural horror film - is a metaphorical stand-in for what causes people to feel anxious, and sometimes it's the characters' response to danger and horror that represents the source of anxiety in people. So, for example, among the best horror movies of the 2020s is The Host, which is premised on the kind of social isolation that the world was forced into during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The development of the discourse on body politics over the past years prompted director Coralie Fargeat to make The Substance, the highly successful horror movie starring Demi Moore. Meanwhile, the trend for remakes also continues in 2024, with Nosferatu, which earned high Rotten Tomatoes ratings on its debut. The best horror movies of the past...

The movie “Running on Empty” explores what happens when a young man named Mortimer, played by Kier Gilchrist, learns he only has about one year left to live. As a mortician, Mort’s unusual job was to prepare deceased bodies for funerals. When a new medical discovery revealed each person’s exact death date, Mort was shocked to find out his time was almost up. How would he make the most of the limited days remaining?
Directed by Daniel Andre in his feature film debut, “Running on Empty” presented this unique premise as a romantic comedy with darker elements. The story follows Mort as he searches for connection and meaning after his long-time fiancée dumps him over their divergent life expectancies. Along the way, he encounters strange characters and bizarre situations through a dating app matching people by their time left.

A premiere at last year’s Venice Film Festival is now coming to theaters next month. Robert Kolodny’s feature debut The Featherweight, which stars James Madio, Ruby Wolf, Keir Gilchrist, Stephen Lang, Ron Livingston, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Shari Albert, and undefeated professional featherweight boxer Bruce Carrington, is based on the true story of the winningest American boxer in the history of the sport. Ahead of a September 20 release, the first trailer and poser have arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Set in the mid-1960s in Hartford, Connecticut, The Featherweight presents a gripping chapter in the true-life story of Italian-American boxer Willie Pep the winningest fighter of all time—who, down and out in his mid-40s and with his personal life in shambles, decides to make a return to the ring, at which point a documentary camera crew enters his life. Lucy Hale's performance shines in the film. Keir Gilchrist and Hale have great chemistry. The cast struggles with a lack of direction and odd acting choices.
Running on Empty is a movie that clearly tries to deliver an impactful message about living life to the fullest, but it falters behind bizarre and lackluster comedy and writing. The movie stars Keir Gilchrist, and Lucy Hale, as young adults searching for meaning in their lives. This is made exponentially more important for Mort (Gilchrist), when he is told he has less than a year left to live.

"Best fighter I ever saw!" Tuckman Media has revealed an official trailer for the film The Featherweight, from filmmaker Robert Kolodny, which first premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year. The film is a mockumentary, a fake doc following a boxer as he attempts to make a comeback. Based on the true story of the winningest American boxer in the history of the sport. Set in 1964, a camera crew follows Willie Pep, retired featherweight boxing champion. Down and out in Hartford Ct, married to a woman half his age and with a drug-addled son and mounting debts, Pep decides to make a return to the ring. It doesn't go so well... After its Venice premiere, The Featherweight played festivals around the world, praised for its technical aspects as it recreates the 60s in vivid detail and intersperses staged & archival boxing footage. Starring James Madio as Pep (who trained for...

During its San Diego Comic-Con panel Friday, The Walking Dead: Dead City dropped a sneak peek at Season 2. Suffice it to say that “Bad Negan” is in the house — and he’s not alone, either. He has in hand Lucille, aka the barbed-wire-covered baseball bat that he named after his late wife. (Technically, this would have to be Lucille 2.0, since he broke and cremated the first one back in Season 10 of the mothership.)

"So what kinda gal are you lookin' for?" Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for an awkward romantic comedy movie called Running on Empty, being released this summer starting in August (eventually on VOD later in August). Marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Daniel André, this was originally titled Mort in Sherman Oaks before the new title change, since it's set in the San Fernando Valley. The film follows an odd young man named Mort who discovers he has less than a year to live. After hearing the news, his fiancé leaves him, then he meets Kate using a dating service that matches people by their death dates, all while being stalked by a disturbed pimp. Definitely sounds kooky! Mort sets out on a spirited quest to find meaning in his existence and hopefully the girl of his dreams along the way. The film stars Keir Gilchrist, Lucy Hale,...

I've been beating the drums of the Maika Monroe fan train for a long time now as the talented actress and scream queen continues to pick excellent horror and thriller flicks to star in, with her next big project, Longlegs, arguably one of the most highly anticipated horror movies of the year. It's already getting crazy buzz from critics and debuted with a perfect 100% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. But while ahead of its release, Monroe took some time to tease another big horror project she's working on, They Follow, a sequel to the 2016 cult hit It Follows.
Speaking to Collider about the film, she teases that the follow-up will be "bigger and darker and more f**ked up." Obviously, Monroe will return as the protagonist, Jay Height. David Robert Mitchell is also back to write and direct the sequel. He also has a new sci-fi in the works called...

A decade later, Maika Monroe has no plans outrunning her breakout role.
The actress teased that her upcoming horror movie They Follow will be well worth the wait after she signed onto the sequel of 2014’s It Follows back in October, along with returning writer/director David Robert Mitchell.
“David is brilliant. I mean, he is brilliant,” she told Collider. “The whole movie transformed at that point. It was changing the game in the genre, and he wouldn’t ever make a sequel if he didn’t think it was going to top it.
“He’s very specific, turns down so many… He just knows what he wants to do and what he wants to make. I mean, at first I’m like, ‘Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?’ And I read it, and it’s just so f***ing good. It’s so good. I’m so excited.

Exclusive: National Geographic is wading into one of psychology’s most debated studies from the past 50 years. The network has given a green light to The Stanford Prison Experiment: Unlocking The Truth (wt), a three-part docuseries from Juliette Eisner, Alex Braverman and Muck Media, the producers behind Nat Geo’s Emmy-nominated Trafficked: Underworlds with Mariana van Zeller.
Led by Stanford psychology professor Dr. Phillip Zimbardo, the six-day Stanford Prison Experiment was Zimbardo’s attempt to understand the power of situation over human behavior. In 1971, Zimbardo paid two dozen college-aged participants to live in a mock prison, observing how randomly assigned “prisoner” and “guard” roles influenced behavior. What started out as a self-contained university experiment turned into a media spectacle that captured the imagination and attention of the world, defining our understanding of human nature and forever changing the course of psychology.

Fred's journey navigates through memories, trauma, and alternate lives, ultimately finding resolution and appreciation. The film's complex structure blends past and present, highlighting themes of regret, growth, and understanding personal paths.
The Flashback movie explained a world where a person could see into the past and future, but the ending left many people confused. The film, written and directed by Christopher MacBride, stars Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) as Fred Fitzell. After starting a new job and preparing to get married, a chance encounter with someone from his past causes Fred to remember Cindy Williams (Maika Monroe), an old classmate who vanished before final exams.

The tandem of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden have been in the indie filmmaking business now for nearly two decades and have a direct link to Sundance’s past. They made a return to the independent film scene last January with Freaky Tales, this despite their detour to work on television projects and a popcorn film like Captain Marvel. For their latest oeuvre they enlisted the likes of Pedro Pascal, re-teamed with Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Jack Champion, Dominique Thorne, Keir Gilchrist, Ji-young Yoo and sadly the departed Angus Cloud for a shoot that would have taken place at the beginning of the year in Oakland.…...

Believe the hype – It Follows – leads the way as a genuinely scary, modern horror classic and now this nightmare inducing freakout fest, from award-winning director David Robert Mitchell, is about to creep up and shock you with an immense new Limited Edition 4K Uhd / Blu-ray dual release from Second Sight Films.

Cinephiles tend to be reluctant to call a new movie a favorite, instead favoring tried and true paradigms, but It Follows is a rare contemporary film that immediately struck a wide swath of viewers — myself included — as a modern classic upon its release in 2014. Comfortingly familiar yet invigoratingly fresh, I’ve only come to appreciate it more since, and Second Sight Films’ new 4K Ultra HD edition proves it hasn’t lost any staying power after nearly a decade.
The plot is deceptively simple: after a sexual encounter, 19-year-old Jay begins being followed by… something. The supernatural force takes a human form but never sticks to one for long; it could be a familiar face, an obscene stranger, or anyone in between. The only recourse seems to be passing it on to someone else via sexual intercourse. Otherwise, it will kill her, then the person who gave it to her,...

An Emmy-nominated documentary cinematographer with credits including “Procession” and “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” Robert Kolodny puts his expert eye for shooting nonfiction to playful narrative use in his feature directing debut “The Featherweight.” A meticulously designed, gutsily played biopic of world champion featherweight boxer Guglielmo Papaleo, better known as Willie Pep — covering not his 1940s glory days but his faltering attempt at a comeback two decades later — the film is convincingly fashioned as a candid all-access documentary, a promotional puff piece curdling before our eyes into an unintended study of mental breakdown.
So convincingly, in fact, that uninformed viewers chancing upon “The Featherweight” on the festival circuit may wonder exactly what it is they’re watching, not least if — in a realization of Pep’s own glumly stated fears — they have no idea who this once-celebrated sportsman was. Kolodny puts nary a foot wrong in his precise replication...

It Follows is a deeply unsettling, yet beautifully produced coming of age creeper. The story of a young woman (Maika Monroe) who is relentlessly stalked by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter, it taps into primal fears such as death, abandonment, betrayal, and social ostracism. Hailed as a modern horror classic, it entrenches itself in the logic of grim and bloody fairy tales in which youngsters must fend for themselves and use their wits to outsmart and survive an evil adversary.

There’s a story that Willie Pep, the protagonist of Robert Kolodny’s feature debut The Featherweight, likes to tell. It’s about a match with a kid, who, so awed by the boxing champion, asks for an autograph. The request flummoxes Willie. “I say, ‘Kid, get away from me, we’re boxing tonight. What are people going to think?’” The crowd came to see a fight, he reminds the junior. They need to put on a show.
As Willie (played by James Madio) talks about this moment, he gesticulates and pulls his audience — a small group of friends — to play supporting roles. It’s clear why the boxer likes to recount this tale. Nostalgia tempts him. It directs his moods, prompts his long monologues and drives Willie, at age 42, to stage a comeback.
The Featherweight is a fictionalized account of the real-life two-time featherweight champion’s attempts to get back in the ring.

Once you catch up with Truham Grammar School lovebirds Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke), the real Heartstopper might be that you’ll have to wait (at least) months for the third season of the Netflix series. Heartstopper’s second season dropped on Thursday, August 3, and Season 3 isn’t on the schedule yet. But that third go-round is coming: Netflix ordered both seasons in one fell swoop last year. Elizabeth Olsen calls herself an “unemployed” actor — even after playing Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and her latest role as Candy Montgomery in the HBO miniseries “Love & Death.”

The horribly tragic true story of Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore has been grist for several true-crime dramas. During the summer of 1980, Montgomery stopped by her friend Gore's home to pick up a swimsuit for Gore's daughter. Gore allegedly confronted Montgomery, who was engaged in an affair with her husband. A fight ensued, and, per Montgomery, she murdered Gore in self-defense. The sticking point here is the viciousness of the killing: Gore was struck 41 times with an axe. Though Montgomery was found not guilty, many people in the Dallas suburb of Wylie, Texas believed she had murdered Gore in cold blood, and protested the verdict.

Tom Pelphrey is living in baby girl bliss! In March, the actor and his partner, Kaley Cuoco, welcomed their first child, a daughter named Matilda.
“The first month has been heaven,” Pelphrey tells Et’s Deidre Behar while promoting his new HBO Max show, “Love & Death”.
Although he’s only been a father for a matter of weeks, Pelphrey says that he has already learned a few important lessons.
“It’s sort of like you keep them safe, you keep them healthy, you don’t let them hurt themselves and you offer guidance and structure,” he says. “I feel like the the child is also apart of this equation and they’re not going to be dictated to or shouldn’t be.”
