Link Tank: 12 Characters Who Could Be in Crisis On Infinite Earths

Spencer Mullen Oct 11, 2019

Crisis On Infinite Earths, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, Rick and Morty, and more in today's daily Link Tank!

An episode of Rick and Morty showed Rick at his worst yet inspired Elon Musk's Tesla "Sentry Mode."

"How far can a show take one clever, trippy premise? On a less capable series, episodes like Rick and Morty’s “The Ricks Must Be Crazy” could have been a disaster. But in the hands of Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland, and lead writer Dan Guterman (who also wrote “Interdimensional Cable 2”), the story of Morty and Rick going inside the microverse battery of Rick’s car artfully layers joke upon joke as it dives deeper into a series of concentrically smaller universes, but it’s the episode’s B-plot happening back on Earth that had the biggest impact on popular culture."

Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, “Rick and Morty” follows the misadventures of gruff mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith (both voiced by Roiland) as they travel through dimensions.

Animator Michael Cusack moves from viral shorts into longer-form

Michael Cusack.

Despite a channel that boasts over 38.8 million views, animator Michael Cusack – creator of series Yolo and Damo and Darren – says he’s never really made much money off of YouTube. What the platform has given him, however, is a leg-up into an enviable animation career.

Yolo, a 2-minute parody of girls’ nights out, went viral when Cusack first uploaded it back in 2012. It currently has more than 8 million views, and caught the eye of Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. He’d go on to approach Cusack to create an April Fools special for the Adult Swim series.

The resulting short, Bushland Adventures, sees Rick and Morty take a roadtrip from Wollongong (where Cusack is from) to Bendigo. The animator had complete freedom to take the episode where he wanted.

“It was this strange dream job, where I was handed this thing where I could pretty much just do anything.

‘Solar Opposites’: Aliens Land in the Suburbs in Justin Roiland’s New Animated Hulu Show

While each streaming service is each staking claims to their slice of the adult animation world, Hulu’s entry, “Solar Opposites,” has kept plenty of its details close to the vest. On Friday at a Comic-Con panel, series co-creators and “Rick and Morty” vets Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan expanded on the vague “alien family comedy” description that’s followed the show since its series order last summer.

“It’s a group of aliens and their home planet gets destroyed by an asteroid and a bunch of them flee. We follow one particular escape pod of aliens that end up landing on earth. It really is an immigrant story, but it’s from the perspective of aliens. They’re kind of unfamiliar with everything,” Roiland told the gathered crowd at Comic-Con’s Indigo Ballroom. “They don’t understand human culture. They don’t know what’s real and what’s fake.
