Having a hissable, recurring villain adds that special something to any TV procedural.
Elijah Stone has been filling that role on The Rookie, tormenting members of the LAPD's Metro Division over the past two seasons (although it feels longer).
Sadly, complex villains such as Stone have recently become less of a thing on broadcast TV.
Let's look at the famed Hawaii Five-0 villain, Wo Fat, as a case study.
During the series' original run, Wo Fat was a crime boss, a red Chinese spy who answered to Peking (it was a different time) and served as the primary enemy of Steve McGarrett (played by Jack Lord).
Wo Fat (portrayed by Khigh Dhiegh) hung like a dense fog over that version, appearing in 15 episodes over nine of the show's 12 seasons.
In the rebooted series, Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos) was a crime boss and former Chinese Ministry of Interior agent. appeared...

As the Season 3 premiere of The Cleaning Lady approaches, the cast and crew is still mourning the loss of Adan Canto.
While speaking with Deadline ahead of Tuesday’s episode, star Elodie Yung said that she is not doing anything on set, not once, without Adan in mind.”
Yung starred alongside Canto in the first two seasons of The Cleaning Lady. She wasn’t able to give many details about how the story may have changed in the wake of Cantos’ death, only that she hopes audiences will feel like they honored his character.
“I’m not involved in the writing of the show, so I’m not sure how things were handled before. What I can tell you is that…they’ve had a lot of meetings to make sure that his memory has been honored, that we would do things the right way for him and for his...

Angela is a badass, but is she badass enough to take down Elijah and Abril now that they're working together?
Our TV Fanatics, Jasmine, Denis, and Christine, are here to debate the action-packed The Rookie Season 5 Episode 15.
What was Angela's best badass moment? Is Monica a dead woman walking, or will she turn on Elijah? What was Nolan's mother's most surprising con? And is Bailey starting to win any fans? Read on to find out.
What was most shocking: Angela going to Elijah, Wesley going to Abril, or Elijah reaching out to Abril?
Jasmine: I love a good "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." We already knew Angela would go to Elijah and that it would likely be a ruse. And the "Previously On" flashes had to be leading somewhere while showing Abril. I didn't expect Elijah and Abril to team up, though, so that was the bigger shock for me,...

The only thing more terrifying than an Elijah problem is an Elijah and Abril one.
Most of The Rookie Season 5 Episode 15 had Angela and Wesley partaking in a bold, risky plan to take down two of their worst adversaries. It was near impeccable execution until it wasn't.
Nolan also spent the hour laying his mother to rest and providing equal parts humor and action as well.
Installments like this can be some of the best, but they also make you wish they'd focus exclusively on one storyline.
Once again, Nolan's storyline paled in comparison to what was happening back in L.A. with the collaboration between the L.A.P.D. and the Feds.
They had so many moving pieces happening at once, subterfuge, Angela's badassery, drama, and quality content all around.
In many ways, it was nice to take a break from the more personal aspects of the characters' storylines and focus...

ABC‘s The Rookie is notorious for featuring villains that always seem to pop up at random moments. From Elijah Stone to Rosalind Dyer, some bad guys just can’t remain locked up in prison. And it sounds like The Rookie Season 5 Episode 15, “The Con,” will include the return of another criminal — Abril Rodas.

As The Rookie fans recall, Abril Rodas was the security chief for Sandra de La Cruz, aka La Fiera. The ABC series introduced Abril during the season 4 premiere when La Fiera kidnapped Angela Lopez and brought her to her compound outside of Guatemala City, Guatemala.

The Rookie loves itself as a good villain, and they know how to put them to use.
It was easy not to think much of the gang war Angela, Harper, Nolan, and Celina happened across on The Rookie Season 5 Episode 11, but as far as having things come together, Elijah, as a returning baddie, sets up another potentially interesting arc.
Of course, that's assuming people aren't tired of Elijah already.
Angela and Nyla, as partners, continue to be the gift that keeps on giving, and they always bring in the interesting cases, too. The ladies just click well with each other, and most days, you can watch an entire installment devoted to them.
The return of Angela's super hot priest brother was a treat, but he brought the total opposite of that when he needed her to look into finding Mateo, the good kid caught up in gangs.

She claims she has nothing but respect for Phoebe and Malika and the podcast they do but doesn’t follow up with giving them what they deserve. You need to watch your back with Jax … and your front, and probably your sides as well.”
Jax will be the latest hurdle for Phoebe as she works at adulting, a theme of the series. She’s already faced a host of problems in the show’s first few episodes,...

Phoebe Robinson, the stand-up comedian who with Jessica Williams co-hosted the podcast-turned-hbo series “2 Dope Queens,” is ready to bring her audio skills back to the screen.
Robinson is the creator and star of the upcoming Freeform comedy “Everything’s Trash,” which is adapted from her 2018 essay collection “Everything’s Trash, but It’s Okay.” She and showrunner Jonathan Groff leaned into the humor of “Sooo Many White Guys,” her solo spinoff of “2 Dope Queens,” while developing “Everything’s Trash,” in which Robinson plays a fictionalized version of herself that she affectionately refers to as TV Phoebe.
Groff “had listened to some episodes of ‘Sooo Many White Guys’ and really liked the rapport that I had with my producer, Joanna [Solotaroff],” Robinson says. “We wanted to replicate that, because we felt that TV Phoebe’s superpower, and my superpower, is being an empath — highlighting what’s special about someone and then zeroing in on that.

Everything’s Trash is, first and foremost, an excellent showcase for the towering charm of executive producer and star Phoebe Robinson. As Phoebe Hill, a broke 30something podcaster trying halfheartedly to get her act together in Brooklyn, she’s basically impossible not to like, even though the entire series revolves around her being (as she puts it) “hella messy.”
Case in point: In the premiere, Phoebe nearly derails her brother Jayden’s political campaign launch when she’s caught sleeping with a member of his rival’s team, and then adds to the mini-scandal with a very public wardrobe malfunction. Yet the drama of it all only makes Phoebe seem more lovable — simultaneously relatable and aspirational. A lot of us, after all, have hooked up with people we maybe shouldn’t have; most of us only wish we could bounce back from it with Phoebe’s confidence,...

Sometimes the trash takes itself out.
Are we talking about the Elijah situation, Tim's father, or Donovan? Well, technically, all of it, since The Rookie Season 4 Episode 9 mostly resolved these storylines.
Of course, the winter finale left the door open for some new ones.
One of the lightest storylines, if you exclude Smitty's self-implosion in the union rep race against Nolan thanks to Tamara's Gen Z magic, was Nolan and Bailey's relationship.
Do we know long they've been dating? It hasn't been that long, but they've fast-tracked their relationship so much it's hard to keep up with it at all.
It's also one of the least appealing aspects of the series, which sadly continues to be an ongoing thing when it comes to Nolan's love life, and not even bumping Jenna Dewan up to a series regular has helped.
Is there anyone out there who's invested in this union at all?...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers from the winter finale of The Rookie, so if you aren’t as informed as crime lord Elijah, you might want to come back after you’ve watched the episode.] Emotions ran high—and storylines seemingly ran their course—in tonight’s midseason finale, “Breakdown.” As the LAPD mobilized to help deputy D.A. Wes (Shawn Ashmore) from his dirty deal with drug dealer Elijah (Brandon Jay McLaren), the career criminal found himself in the crosshairs of the late La Fiera’s second-in-command. On the personal front, Tim (Eric Winter) paid a heartbreaking visit to his dying, abusive father (James Remar) for the least Hallmark moment ever and Harper (Mekia Cox) took the low road to keep her ex (Enver Gjokaj) from moving away with their daughter. Oh, and Nolan (Nathan Fillion) introduced his son (remotely) to Bailey (Jenna Dewan) while also toying with popping the question. That is, until the hour’s final ...

Exclusive: Brandon Jay McLaren (Turner & Hooch) DeVaughn Nixon (Prom) and Tiffany Lonsdale (Siren) are set for heavily recurring roles opposite Damson Idris in the upcoming fifth season of FX drama Snowfall. The series hails from the late Oscar- and Emmy-nominated director John Singleton & Eric Amadio and Dave Andron.
In the most recent fourth season, business is booming. It’s January 1, 1985. Ronald Reagan has won his re-election campaign, proclaiming it is “morning again in America,” but in South Central, Los Angeles, it feels more like the sun is getting low. The demand for crack cocaine is high, and while our crew of dealers led by Franklin Saint (Idris) are benefitting greatly from the rising tide of addiction, they are also starting to become aware of the damage the drug is doing to the people and to the place they love.

Exclusive: Matt Hamilton (The Actress Diaries), Paul Campbell (Battlestar Galactica) and Cristina Rosato (Little Italy) are set for recurring roles in Turner & Hooch, Disney+’s reboot of the classic 1989 buddy-cop comedy feature. The TV series, which has a 12-episode order, comes from Matt Nix and 20th TV.

The series also stars as Carra Patterson as Jessica Baxter, Scott’s brave, street-smart partner; Brandon Jay McLaren as Xavier Wilson, a cool, enigmatic Marine-turned-marshal; Anthony Ruivivar as Chief James Mendez, Scott’s boss with a secret soft spot for Scott’s new dog, Hooch; Lyndsy Fonseca as Laura Turner,...
