"How can I get treated like this, you know?" HBO has unveiled the official trailer for a documentary titled Unmasking Jihadi John, in full with the subtitle: Anatomy of a Terrorist. The film is the latest directed by award-winning documentarian Anthony Wonke, who also made the behind-the-scenes doc film The Director and the Jedi about Rian Johnson making Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This time he focuses on a very different topic. From BAFTA-winning producer and investigative journalist Richard Kerbaj, Unmasking Jihadi John: Anatomy of a Terrorist examines what propelled British citizen Mohammed Emwazi's journey down a violent path despite Us and British authorities being aware of his extremism. It's a damning look at the making of a terrorist and what might've driven him to such extremes. This looks chilling and fascinating. Here's the official trailer for Anthony Wonke's doc Unmasking Jihadi John, from HBO's YouTube: Mohammed Emwazi, aka 'Jihadi John',...

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” garnered a complex set of reactions when it came out in December, but none was more unexpected than the one from Luke Skywalker himself. While critics raved about the movie and fans picked it apart, Hamill revealed in an interview shortly after the release that he “still hasn’t accepted” the transformation of his iconic character from idealistic Jedi to the cranky reclusive he portrays at the beginning of the seventh installment, written and directed by Rian Johnson.
Hamill apologized a few days later, tweeting that he regretted “voicing my doubts and insecurities in public,” but his real apology tour kicked off at the SXSW Film Festival. It was there that both Hamill and Johnson showed up for a series of appearance tied to the March 27 home video release and a screening of “The Director and the Jedi,” a behind-the-scenes look at the production of the blockbuster film.

Much has been made of the divisive nature of The Last Jedi. Love it or hate it, the praise or blame, depending on your view, rests squarely on the shoulders of writer/director Rian Johnson. He is the sole credited screenwriter and he shepherded this movie from day one, with the blessing of Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and with the help of a massive cast and crew. However, as revealed in the intimate documentary The Director and the Jedi, this movie, for better or for worse, was absolutely an execution of a singular vision and this behind-the-scenes expose provides us an intimate look at that process from start to finish.
The Director and the Jedi comes from director Anthony Wonke and starts from the very beginning of this journey. We pick up the moment Rian Johnson was announced as the director of what was simply known as Star Wars: Episode VIII at the time.

Anthony Wonke’s for-fans-only documentary offers insights into the player’s family life but swerves round the scandals
The film-makers may have been granted unprecedented access to the inner circle of one of the world’s top footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo, but the result, a carefully controlled and meticulously sanitised hagiography, is as airbrushed and groomed as its subject. One imagines that entry into Ronaldo’s gilded world cost multi-Bafta-winning director Anthony Wonke much of the creative freedom that he would usually expect on a project.
The film explores the Madeira-born soccer star’s early life, with insights into his unfulfilling relationship with his alcoholic father, who died from cirrhosis of the liver in 2005. We get to see some stage-managed father-son bonding between Ronaldo and the child he had with an unknown mother in 2010.

It’s been a couple months since the last edition of What’s Up Doc? placed Michael Moore’s surprise world premiere of Where To Invade Next at the top of this list and in the meantime much shuffling has taken place and much time has been spent on various new endeavors (namely my Buffalo-based film series, Cultivate Cinema Circle). The Toronto International Film Festival’s prominence on the festival circuit has only grown over the years, with films from numerous different fields having gone on to critical and commercial acclaim. Among the festival’s different categories are Tiff Docs and Vanguard. Tiff Docs allows documentaries to get their own spotlight at the festival, giving acclaimed documentarians such as Michael Moore and Frederick Wiseman a platform for their films. The Vanguard section, on the other hand, showcases films that aren’t easily categorisable into a specific genre. With the Canadian Films lineup announcement having revealed the first set of films playing in each group, Tiff today revealed more of the lineup in each section. The list of newly announced films, with their official synopses, is as follows.
Tiff Docs
Amazing Grace, directed by Sydney Pollack, making its International Premiere

It’s been a surprisingly interesting month of moving and shaking in terms of doc development. Just a month after making his first public funding pitch at Toronto’s Hot Docs Forum, legendary doc filmmaker Frederick Wiseman took to Kickstarter to help cover the remaining expenses for his 40th feature film In Jackson Heights (see the film’s first trailer below). Unrelentingly rigorous in his determination to capture the American institutional landscape on film, his latest continues down this thematic rabbit hole, taking on the immensely diverse New York City neighborhood of Jackson Heights as his latest subject. According to the Kickstarter page, Wiseman is currently editing the 120 hours of rushes he shot with hopes of having the film ready for a fall festival premiere (my guess would be Tiff, where both National Gallery and At Berkeley made their North American debut), though he’s currently quite a ways away from his $75,000 goal.

Unless you’re talking about Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters or Toy Story 3, it’s usually not a good sign to hear of a sequel to a long retired franchise, least of all from a new, upstart director (just ask Jurassic World). This week however a director started a project that might even be an improvement on the original.
Deadline exclusively reported Joe Carnahan’s (The Grey) possible involvement in Bad Boys 3. David Guggenheim (Safe House) penned a screenplay for the sequel to Michael Bay’s 1995 and 2003 films, and the studio is hoping to move negotiations along quickly, as they plan to approach both Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to return.
We talked recently about Brad Pitt‘s involvement on a new project just bought by Netflix, but their top competitor Amazon has signed another major name: Terry Gilliam. Indiewire spoke with the cult director and Monty Python alum,...

★★★★☆ Each year, the discourse on global oil production intensifies; critics have been vocal about its dirty, finite and dangerous properties, or its place in a capitalist society which is reliant on unremitting assembly. It would therefore be straightforward to apply these arguments to Anthony Wonke's documentary Fire in the Night (2013), a sensitive retelling of the explosion that occurred on 6 July, 1988 on the Piper Alpha platform. But Wonke's poetic and solicitous film, based on a book by Stephen McGinty, relives the tragedy in a deeply personal way, interviewing those who survived, and is actually richer for the absence of politics.
Located off the east coast of Aberdeen and owned by Occidental Petroleum, Piper Alpha provided 10% of all North Sea oil production and at the time was channelling 300,000 barrels of oil per day. In a tragic way, the sheer scale of the operation contributed to the rig's doom as two explosions,...

Robot and Frank; Identity Thief; Red Dawn; Fire in the Night; A Field in England
What a strange little movie is Robot and Frank (2012, EOne, 12). Set in the near future, this gentle, sci-fi-inflected oddity finds Frank Langella playing an ageing cat burglar who becomes the unwilling recipient of a robot butler. Initially scornful of his automated assistant (and depressed by encroaching dementia), Frank warms to the robot's charms when he realises that he can become a partner in crime.
It sounds terrible, like some misjudged hybrid of the all too real pain of Iris and the fantastical comedy of Sleeper. Yet somehow it works, with writer Christopher Ford and director Jake Schreier conjuring an unexpectedly touching and bittersweet tale about the rigours of old age and the peculiar twists of unlikely friendship. Peter Sarsgaard provides the voice of the robot who overturns generic conventions by being both utterly practical and increasingly amiable,...
