This week Murder Made Me Famous spotlights the shocking and horrific killing spree conducted by Richard Ramirez, who became known as the Night Stalker. Ramirez was about 24-years-old when he started killing, with the murder and rape of a 9-year-old girl in San Francisco being linked to him years later via DNA. His most infamous string of killing began in 1984 while he was staying at the notorious Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles when he started a killing spree that sent locals into panic and captured the imagination of the press. Typically Ramirez would break into a home in order...read more...

In the 1980s, a serial killer was on the loose in Los Angeles — but his methods baffled authorities.
The killer used a wide variety of weapons: handguns, knives, a machete, and even a tire iron. Some of his victims were robbed; others were raped. Some were fatally shot.
Even more inexplicably, the man — who the media dubbed the Night Stalker — left some victims alive, seemingly at random. From April 1984 to August 1985, he killed at least 14 people.
Eventually, police identified the Night Stalker as 25-year-old drifter Richard Muñoz Ramirez. He was captured in Arizona in August 1985.

Horror at the Cecil Hotel examines the history of the troubled hotel including the serial killer Richard Ramirez who used it as a base when he went on a killing spree. All hotel have guests dying in rooms or even the occasional suicide or murder, but the Cecil seems to be one of those places that just has more than usual. It could be because the hotel was built in what for a long time became the poorest area in the city. An area of a few blocks that became known as skid row and that attracted those who were...read more...

Dick Wolf says there are no shortage of brutal murderers to populate future seasons of his new anthology series “Law & Order True Crime.”
Among the names he’s considering for future editions: Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, “Night Stalker” mass killer Richard Ramirez and “Son of Sam” serial killer David Berkowitz.
“This is endless if you get the right case,” he said. “There are a lot of things I’d like to examine for eight hours.”
But first up: Lyle and Erik Melendez, who were tried and sentenced for killing their parents in Beverly Hills. Now, NBC’s “Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders” will dredge the case back up to reveal new information that could change viewers’ minds about the verdict.
“I don’t care what attitude you have going into this. Your mind will receive info that I believe will change your attitudes,” executive producer Wolf said...

A few years back, there was a pretty interesting headline that came out of Los Angeles. Yes, I know, L.A.’s a big place, so I’ll probably have to be a bit more specific as to which story I’m referring to. But before I do that, let’s step back a minute and lay the groundwork.
In downtown Los Angeles, there was a hotel known as The Cecil Hotel (I say was because the hotel has since rebranded itself as Stay on Main), renowned for its morbid history. Located in the notorious area Skid Row, the Cecil Hotel was well known for its rampant criminal activity — it housed serial killer Richard Ramirez for some time — and suicides. In one particularly unlucky case, a man jumped from the building to commit suicide, only to land on someone down below in the process, resulting in a double death.

America's serial killers come out to play in American Horror Story Hotel's latest Halloween episode, Devil's Night...
This review contains spoilers.
5.4 Devil's Night
The announcement that Lady Gaga would play a prominent role in American Horror Story: Hotel was a bit of a divisive one. She was the centerpiece of a lot of the show's commercials, particularly one of her set to the memorable industrial tune Du Hast by Rammstein. No one knew what role she would play, or what her purpose would end up being, but everyone had an opinion about it, and most of those opinions seem to have been negative. It's easy to see why; Gaga's a pop star, not an actress. If she's been on stage or screen, it's been in the context of her musical talents first and foremost, not her ability to emote or cry on cue. I have to admit to having been pleasantly surprised.

Spoilers ahead for the most recent episode of American Horror Story: Hotel. On Wednesday night’s American Horror Story: Hotel, John Lowe is invited to a dinner party along with Aileen Wuornos, Richard Ramirez, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, and the Zodiac — a murderer’s row of serial killers. "John is clearly not yet our kind," their host James March tells them when the detective balks at their idea of amuse-bouche and desserts. Was Lowe invited to this strange soirée because he's a guest of the hotel, because they enjoyed the idea of a helpless law-enforcement official in their midst, or because he might actually be a kindred spirit? Wes Bentley, who plays Lowe, helped shed a little light when he chatted with Vulture about Ahs theories, understanding addiction, and why he wants Gwyneth Paltrow's head in a box.Why do you think John Lowe was invited to the Devil's Night dinner?...

Horror movies are often “based on” real-world experiences, but there are few sources of inspiration that are more unnerving than the chilling viral video that birthed this season of “American Horror story." “American Horror Story: Hotel” creator Ryan Murphy was on hand at today’s TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour to talk about the upcoming season, which he assured will “return to the Season 1 roots” and “tap into true primal fears.” He’s off to a good start in terms of inspiring a visceral sense of terror if the origin of this season’s story is anything to judge by. The idea for “Hotel” – which takes place in a downtown Los Angeles hotel and taps into “real American horrors” – came to Murphy after watching a viral video of Elisa Lam in what appear to be her final moments on Earth. Lam was a Canadian student whose body was discovered...

Lou Diamond Phillips has signed on to star as one of the most notorious murderers in American history for The Night Stalker. The La Bamba star will portray Richard Ramirez in the thriller, which is due to begin production later this summer. Variety has the scoop that the 53-year-old actor has signed on the dotted line for the project, noting that the film takes its title from the nickname that was given to Ramirez, who went on a rampant killing spree in 1985 that resulted in the deaths of 13 people across Los Angeles. Phillips is going to have to be at his darkest and most intense to portray Ramirez, who was a devout Satanist who never expressed regret for his crimes or apologized to the victim.s families. Earlier this summer, a report surfaced saying Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn was in early talks to direct The Bringing, a spec script by Brandon & Phillip Murphy. The film was inspired by the mysterious tale of a young woman named Elisa Lam, who can be seen in a security video on an elevator in the Cecil Hotel in La acting strangely before she disappeared and was found dead in one of the roof's water tanks two weeks later. However, when Refn revealed a month later that his next film would be his own I Walk with the Dead, we were skeptical he closed a deal for The Bringing. Now a new director has been chosen. Read on! Deadline reports Sony Pictures is now in talks with Jeremy Lovering to direct The Bringing, a horror story taking place in the hotel where the killer Richard Ramirez lived at one point and several suicides have occurred.

Earlier this year, Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn was said to be in talks to helm The Bringing for Sony Pictures, but he would leave the project shortly after. However, the studio has now lined up another filmmaker in the form of Jeremy Lovering. He’s best known for 2013 horror movie In Fear.
Scripted by Brandon and Phillip Murphy, The Bringing is based on actual events. It focuses on Elisa Lam, a woman who was found dead in the water tanks on the roof of the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles.
A viral video of the woman acting very strangely in an elevator moments before her death led to a lot of online speculation that there was a supernatural element to what happened to her, especially as she had no history of mental illness and no drugs or alcohol were found in her system when an autopsy was performed.

Last we heard (back in May), Nicolas Winding Refn was hovering around La's Cecil Hotel with the idea to directing The Bringing. Circumstances have changed since then, however, and the latest director in the frame for the true-events-inspired chiller is In Fear's Jeremy Lovering. The film is based on the strange case of 21 year-old Canadian student Elisa Lam, who was found dead in the water tanks on the roof of the Cecil, a month after her disappearance in January last year. The coroner's verdict was accidental drowning, but a video of her odd behaviour in one of the hotel's elevators hours before her death later went viral, and led worldwide conspiracy theorists and hauntologists to believe they know better.Adding to the spook factor is the notion that serial killers Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger were both reportedly residents at the hotel at one point or another. Matt Tolmach and Daniela Cretu are producing. This has been top priority at Sony, and at one time had Nicolas Winding Refn circling. The pic is based on Elisa Lam, who was found dead in the water tanks on the roof of the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. Back in February Deadline reported that director Nicolas Winding Refn would be bringing Elisa Lam's haunting tale to the big screen for Sony with The Bringing. Now it seems that talks have stalled and Refn is out of the picture.
This is the one that got the town whipped into a frenzy partly because its catalyst was a widely circulated video of a young woman who displayed erratic behavior in an elevator at the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, the place such killers as Richard Ramirez called home at one time or other and where numerous suicides have occurred.
The woman, Elisa Lam, was found dead in a water tank on the roof of the hotel. The script has nothing really to do with that tragedy, but it created a germ of an idea focusing on a man investigating a death at the hotel and the nightmare he stumbles into.

Nicolas Winding Refn is currently busy serving on the jury at this year's Cannes Film Festival, but news has recently surfaced that he is eying a film titled The Bringing as his next feature. The Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles is notorious for its dark and haunted history: serial killer Richard Ramirez (The Night Stalker) and “Black Dahlia” murder victim Elizabeth Short had both stayed there, and the building has played host to numerous gruesome deaths – the most recent of which involved the body of a missing student discovered in a rooftop water tank after hotel guests reported foul-smelling black water coming from their taps. Photo © 2014 Kabc-tv/Dt Now it seems a new ghostly guest has signed in at the Cecil, as reported by L.A. affiliate Kabc: this week their website revealed the photo above, taken by Riverside resident Koston Alderete, which seems to depict a spectral figure outside a window on the building's fourth floor. Lamberto Bava cut his teeth in cinema working with giallo legend Mario Bava, his father, and alongside Dario Argento and Ruggero Deodato. Italian horror fans have a special place in their hearts for his two Demons films and the underrated A Blade in the Dark contains some of his finer work. The comparisons are unfair, but Bava has never displayed the visual prowess of mentor Argento, his famous father, or even collaborator Michele Soavi. He does, however, deliver an occasionally entertaining film — even if the greatest moments are derivative of the masters.

After being sent to death row in 1989, following his conviction for 13 murders and 4 attempted murders in California, the "Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez has died at age 53. TMZ reports that the serial killer died from Hepatitis C, though his death is being attributed to natural causes.
While Ramirez was convicted of 13 killings, many believe there were more victims. He was also convicted on 11 counts of sexual assault. His last victim survived and saw the car Ramirez drove away in. Eventually police tracked down the stolen vehicle and lifted a fingerprint from it.
From there, mugshots of Ramirez were shown on television and printed in newspapers. He was then found, trying to steal another car, by a mob of angry citizens in East Los Angeles. Ramirez, 53, was convicted of 13 murders and earned his name for terrorizing the Southland with a series of sexual assaults and other crimes. During a court appearance in 1985, he yelled "Hail Satan!" as he was led out of the courtroom after pleading not guilty to crimes, the Los Angeles Times recalled at the time. Ramirez drew Satanic imagery in the homes of his victims, the newspaper reported from

Convicted serial killer Richard Ramirez, known as the Night Stalker, has died in prison, say California corrections officials. San Quentin State Prison spokesman Lt. Sam Robinson says Ramirez, 53, died Friday morning. Ramirez was convicted of 13 murders that terrorized Southern California in 1984 and '85, and sentenced to death. Satanic symbols were left at murder scenes and some victims were forced to "swear to Satan" by the killer, who entered homes through unlocked windows and doors. Ramirez was captured and beaten in 1985 by residents of an East Los Angeles neighborhood while attempting a carjacking. Born in El Paso, Texas, Ramirez was the...

Last night Dread Central was invited to the infamous Linda Vista Hospital in Los Angeles for a special haunted tour as well as to be amongst the first to view the highly anticipated trailer for Insidious Chapter 2.
Before the trailer was screened and director James Wan took to the Internet stage to answer some fan questions, we had the opportunity to explore the reportedly haunted hospital on a tour led by the Boyle Heights Paranormal Project, an organization that specializes in extensive investigations of Linda Vista as well as detailed tours for the brave souls out there who dare to enter the facility.
For those not familiar with Linda Vista, it’s an abandoned hospital that has been the shooting location of many horror films, most notably being one of the boiler room sets used in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, and the upcoming Insidious Chapter 2.

Would it surprise you to learn that you have probably never heard of the most prolific serial killers in the world? Infamous names like Richard Ramirez, David Berkowitz, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Ted Bundy barely crack the top 30. So who were the worst?
Determining the “world’s worst serial killer” is an impossible feat. Anyone who kills a person in cold blood is pretty horrible, so the only quantifiable way to determine the “worst” is by the number of kills. This too proves difficult, as many serial killers, once arrested, often confess to dozens or hundreds of murders they had nothing to do with. For example, Henry Lee Lucas confessed to over 600 different murders at one point or another, in what is widely believed to be a farce meant to waste law enforcement’s time and money. Even after all that, most law enforcement believe they have evidence that he was...

Dubbed "The Night Stalker," authorities may never know how many murders and crimes Richard Ramirez committed in the mid-1980s. He terrorized Los Angeles, ultimately getting convicted of 13 different murders. On "Blood, Lies & Alibis," investigators remembered both his crimes, and the powerful moment of his capture.
While it was police work that led to his eventual arrest, it was the people of Los Angeles who took care of apprehending Ramirez. After several sexual assaults and murders, authorities had no evidence with which to determine who The Night Stalker was. But then, he left a fingerprint.
Already having a record, the print quickly led to the mugshot for Richard Ramirez. Authorities circulated that to the media, and enough people saw it to respond quickly when needed.
Someone recognized Ramirez trying to steal a car in La, and an angry mob quickly gave chase. According to the El Paso Times at the time,...

A young James Franco's first mainstream success came with his hauntingly real, Golden Globe-winning portrayal of worldwide icon James Dean. Now, a bonafide superstar intent on making his mark as a director, he's turning his gaze back toward the Rebel Without A Cause for his newest project.
Franco, who will direct an upcoming biopic about actor Sal Mineo, has cast actor Val Lauren in the role, according to The Hollywood Reporter; in December, Franco optioned the rights to a 2001 biography of Mineo, best known as Dean's troubled sidekick in "Rebel Without A Cause."
Mineo, who was murdered in 1976, broke ground as one of Hollywood's first openly gay actors. A two time-Oscar nominee, his frantic, vulnerable Plato won him vast praise and drove his career until he was too old to play the teen role.
The project is just one of many that Franco is taking on as he transitions...

Director: Svetozar Ristovski. Review: Adam Wing. Also known as Dear Mr. Gacy, Svetozar Ristovski’s (Mirage) worthwhile drama chronicles the life of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Also known as the Killer Clown, he committed the rape and murder of 33 teenage boys and young men between 1972 and 1978. Twenty-six of Gacy's victims were buried in his home; three on his property and four were discarded in a nearby river. Gacy became known as the "Killer Clown" due to his services at fundraising events, parades and children's parties where he would dress as "Pogo the Clown," a character he created himself. Jason Michael Moss was an American writer on serial killers. While studying at Unlv for his honours thesis, he established relationships with John Wayne Gacy, Richard Ramirez, Henry Lee Lucas, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Charles Manson. Moss later said that, of all the serial killers he corresponded with, he formed the...

This Canadian made for television production aired back in May 2010 under the title Dear Mr. Gacy and has been re-titled and distributed on DVD for a UK release. The Last Victim continues in same vein as other low budget serial killer thrillers from the past few years, this time, focusing on ‘killer clown’ John Wayne Gacy.
Serial killers and their macabre stories fascinate audiences. We’ve had a string of flicks on modern subjects such as The Hillside Strangler, Ted Bundy, Richard Ramirez and Eileen Wuornos. Funnily enough the producer of Monster is behind this very picture.
The Last Victim is given a great deal of lift by actor William Forsythe. He’s the reason, perhaps the only one, for seeing this film. Gacy presented here is a rather camp, overly friendly and highly delusional figure. He won’t admit he’s done anything wrong at all and believes himself...

Actor Johnny Depp has decided to turn down the title role in Sam Raimi's upcoming Oz, The Great and Powerful. Academy Award nominee and rising star James Franco may jump on board instead. Robert Downey Jr. was originally attached to the same role but stepped down a couple weeks ago. Depp had then shown interest in replacing the Iron Man star but has decided his plate is already too full and has passed as well. James Franco is the latest star in talks to come on board despite having a very full schedule himself in 2011. Franco has a loaded year as he prepares to finish his degree in school, make his directorial debut as well as star in a bunch of films including one based on the life of serial killer Richard Ramirez aka The Night Stalker. Franco is up for Best Actor of the year at the...

Ridley Scott's Prometheus has made some news today by first moving from a March 2012 release date opposite Disney's John Carter of Mars to a summer June 8, 2012 release. Following that move, Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) has now joined the cast opposite the previously cast Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
While the storyline for Prometheus is being kept quiet we still know it began as an expected Alien prequel until it became something different entirely, though Scott is quoted saying, "The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative." Rapace plays a scientist named Elizabeth Shaw while Fassbender will play an android.
Fassbender was previously circling Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman opposite Charlize Theron as the queen, but this deal squashes that one. Although Variety is now reporting the role belongs to Viggo Mortensen,...

One look at James Franco’s IMDb page and you can see that he is a very busy man with a number of films including Your Highness, Rise of the Apes, Maladies, The Broken Tower and The Iceman either completed, announced or in the stages of pre and post production.
He has also recently revealed plans to direct two of his own films including the Richard Ramirez biopic The Night Stalker and will be appearing on Broadway alongside Nicole Kidman this fall in the play Sweet Bird which will be directed by David Cromer. On top of this Franco is going to be occupied over the next month helping to promote his performance in 127 Hours for the Academy Awards, an event which he is also co-hosting with Anne Hathaway.
It’s frankly exhausting just reading about it all.

What's that you say? More James Franco news, because seeing his name attached to every other casting story isn't enough for you? Let us oblige you then. Franco is apparently cornering the market on biopics and may be reunited with 'Howl' directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman in a film about porn star Linda Lovelace. The duo has been developing the movie -- based on Eric Danville's 'The Complete Linda Lovelace' -- and according to The Wrap are in talks with the young actor to twirl his stache and come aboard.
Franco might be amassing himself a collection of unsavory characters to play. Recently there was news that the star might be taking on the role of Satanic serial killer Richard Ramirez. Now the Lovelace project has him attached to Chuck Traynor -- Lovelace's violent, abusive husband and manager who reportedly forced the actress into prostitution,...

Fresh from playing real-life self enforced amputee Aaron Ralston in 127 Hours, James Franco is being set to play another non-fictional character, satanic serial killer Richard Ramirez.
According to the New York Post he’s also down to direct the film, although as we reported earlier this month, he already has another two directorial projects he’s involved in before this feature. Sounds like Franco could benefit from getting his hands on some kind of cloning machine!
Ramirez famously went on a rampage of sexual assault and murder in the mid-eighties in Southern California, and was later found guilty of 13 counts of murder, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries. He’s currently still on death row in California.
Co-produced by Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell and scriptwriter Nicolas Constantine, the film (entitled The Night Stalker) will focus on how Ramirez ended up turning into the notorious serial killer he became.
