The Supreme Court on Monday will hear oral arguments in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, a case that could essentially determine whether homelessness can be criminalized.
The case stems from the city of Grants Pass, a town of roughly 40,000 in southwest Oregon, which began enforcing ordinances in 2013 that made it illegal to sleep on public property using bedding — which could mean anyone using a tent, sleeping bag, or blanket to make it through the night.
The city was sued by a group of homeless residents and a federal court ruled in their favor,...

The A24 original film Civil War is days away from its April 12 release. The dystopian thriller is helmed by famed director Alex Garland and stars actors Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, and Jesse Plemons among others.
The film’s action-packed trailer was released in December 2023 and got many fans talking. The gritty teaser depicts a fractured American society wherein rebel forces band together to launch an attack against the President. The Potus has turned into a tyrant after he disregarded the Constitution and began attacking his citizens.
However, the Civil War trailer got fans talking about the strange alliance it showcased between two American states, who, in reality, don’t see eye-to-eye on many important topics.

Donald Trump and other Republicans may fear Taylor Swift actively campaigning for Joe Biden’s reelection this year, but top Democrats are shoring up their Beyoncé base today.

“You have redefined a genre and reclaimed country music’s Black roots,” the Veep said, adding that Beyoncé’s “music continues to inspire us all.”

Governor Gavin Newsom and politicians in Sacramento may still have a long way to go to conquering California’s budget deficit, but they now finally have the go-ahead from voters to get $6.4 billion to revamp the state’s busted mental health system and combat homelessness.
Almost two weeks after Golden State voters went to the polls on March 5, the bitter battle of the bipartisan Proposition 1 is over with 50.2% of ballots approving the measure. While not uncommon for votes to take a while to be tallied in California elections, Prop 1 was on the razor’s edge the past two weeks in part to a stranger bedfellows coalition of civil rights groups and the grassroots conservative GOP, and in part to lower than expected voter turnout.
“This is a huge victory for doing things radically different when it comes to tackling homelessness,” the governor said this afternoon on social media not long...

The office of Former First Lady Michelle Obama has declared that she has no plans to run for president in this year’s election.
On March 5, Obama’s office ended talks of her possible run for president in a bid to silence frequent speculation and wishful thinking about her taking the Democratic nomination from President Joe Biden.
“As former first lady Michelle Obama has expressed several times over the years, she will not be running for president,” Crystal Carson, the communications director of the former first lady’s office, declared in a statement. “Mrs. Obama supports President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris‘ re-election campaign.”
This statement comes after Republicans like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy publicly encouraged the idea that Obama could replace Biden on the ballot.
Many Republicans and conservative commentators fueled speculation that Obama could come in at the last minute,...

(Updated with more results & Super Tuesday details) The Congressman from Hollywood is one big step closer to becoming the Golden State’s junior Senator, but saw up-close this Super Tuesday some of the visceral challenges Democrats face from their own base.
In the double header that is California’s primary this Super Tuesday, Adam Schiff secured the top spot with just under 40% of the vote in. NBC News and the Associated Press called it for Schiff just over 30 minutes after the polls closed in the nation’s most populous state.
Not that the night was all balloon drops and victory dances for the veteran Congressman.
Dozens of protesters chanting “ceasefire now” over the worsening situation in Gaza made it near impossible for Schiff to get though his speech to supporters at Avalon on LA’s Vine Street.
Adam Schiff’s entire victory speech tonite was interrupted by protesters chanting for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Former President Donald Trump denied having cognitive issues during a confusing 87-minute speech at Cpac. Trump claimed he didn’t “ramble” and that his stories were “very informative.” He also questioned President Joe Biden‘s cognitive state.
Biden’s memory has been under scrutiny during his presidency. A majority of voters expressed concern about the president’s ability to lead the country if elected for another term in recent polls. Biden is currently 81 years old.
Recently, Trump has also been questioned about his own cognitive issues. The former president, 77, has been known to ramble during his speeches. Trump mixed up his presidential candidate Nikki Haley with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi repeatedly in one speech.
Trump often claims he took a mental competency test and “aced it.”
During his speech at Cpac, Trump agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin that Biden should be the next president, raising confusion.
“I talked to Putin a lot.

The upcoming Lucasfilm theatrical release “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is one of 15 films to secure an estimated $61 million in 2024 production tax incentives through California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program.
The California Film Commission touted Disney’s “Mandalorian & Grogu” as the biggest-budget movie to ever qualify for state’s tax program, which distributes $330 million annually in state tax credits to TV and film productions. The 15 films in total — a mix of independent and major studio productions — are projected to inject nearly $408 million in production spending into the state’s economy. “Mandalorian” alone is expected to generate $166 million in spending in the state. The Cfc estimates the production activity across the 15 films will generate jobs for an estimated 2,252 crew members, 598 cast members and 16,800 background performers poised to work across a combined 579 filming days.
Other titles securing incentive commitments include Amazon MGM Studios’ “The Accountant 2” starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal; Chris Pratt-starrer “Mercy,...

The Star Wars franchise is coming to shoot a film entirely in California for the first time with The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, and the Golden State is paying out its weight in tax incentive gold to have the bounty hunter saga made within state lines.
To be specific, that is a total tonnage of $21,755,000 in conditional tax credits for the Jon Favreaudirected film. With a new Fantastic Four, Gladiator 2 and a new season of The Last of Us on his dance card, it is unclear right now if SAG Award winner Pedro Pascal will be resuming his role of Din Djarin and teaming back up with the charming Baby Yoda for the Mandalorian movie.
What is known is that $21,755,000 in tax credits is one of the biggest allocations in the California Film Commission run program’s history.

Former President Donald Trump spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (Cpac) in National Harbor, Maryland, on Saturday. The event precedes the South Carolina primary results expected later on Saturday, where he is predicted to defeat his competitor, Nikki Haley, the former U.N. Ambassador and former South Carolina governor, in her home state.
The hour-and-a-half rambling speech covered Trump’s typical gamut, where he touted his cognitive abilities while demeaning President Biden’s; defended Jan. 6 insurrectionists; ripped on the media; and preached a doomsday scenario if he is not reelected.

According to leading bookmakers, Michelle Obama is the frontrunner to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee in the event that Biden steps down before the 2024 election. Although the former first lady has not indicated an interest in a White House bid, betting company Betfair currently offers odds of 8/1 (11 percent) on Michelle Obama as the most likely alternative to Biden.
Betfair’s odds reflect growing concerns about Biden’s health, exacerbated by recent gaffes, which have sparked speculation about the possibility of him withdrawing from the race. While Biden has secured victories in Democratic primaries in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, his challengers within the party remain on the fringe.
Sam Rosbottom, a spokesperson for Betfair, acknowledged that doubts about Biden’s mental acuity have influenced some bettors to place their money on other potential candidates. Rosbottom noted that four years ago, at the start of the primary season,...

Bill Maher is often confronted with the accusation that he’s switched from an ultra-liberal to a more conservative stance. He may have added fuel to that argument with the subect of Friday’s Real Time, which focused on what he called “Biden’s Brain.” It’s a topic that broke out this week from hushed backrooms to the mainstream, thanks to a Dept. of Justice report and the President’s own attempts to refute it.
Maher started his jabs at Biden in the monologue. Talking about the President’s decline of a Super Bowl interview, Biden noted, “It’s not like they were asking him to appear on Dancing With The Stars.”

Miley Cyrus feared the rainy, windy weather that hit Los Angeles the day of the 2024 Grammys would make her miss her award-winning moment — and she wasn’t the only one.

It’s typical for there to be a logjam getting into an awards show venue, with heavy security, but the storm, for which California governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, made it even more difficult.

Adam Schiff’s Senate campaign announced a multimillion dollar, statewide ad buy for a spot that is most notable for who it singles out: Steve Garvey, the former Dodger great who is running as the highest profile Republican in a Democratic-dominated state.
In the spot, the narrator says, “Steve Garvey, the leading Republican, is too conservative for California — he voted for Trump, twice, and supported Republicans for years, including far right conservatives.
“Adam Schiff, the leading Democrat, defended democracy against Trump and the insurrectionists.”
Isn’t it to be expected that Schiff, one of the most prominent Trump foes in Congress, would want to highlight Garvey’s backing of the former Celebrity Apprentice host in the past two elections?
Perhaps, but these are the dynamics of an open primary, where the top two finishers in the March vote will go on to the general election, regardless of party.

Donald Trump can beat Ron DeSantis, but turns out the Walt Disney Company can’t.
A federal judge just dismissed the Bob Iger-run corporation’s First Amendment lawsuit against the Florida governor and failed GOP presidential candidate.
“After a hearing and having carefully considered the parties’ arguments, I now grant both motions,” U.S. District Court Judge Allen Winsor wrote Wednesday, nearly two months after said hearing. The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board, the group that now oversees a swath of Central Florida where Walt Disney World sits, also was a defendant in the case, along with DeSantis and a number of top members of his administration.
“In short, Disney lacks standing to sue the Governor or the Secretary, and its claims against the Cftod Defendants fail on the merits because when a statute is facially constitutional, a plaintiff cannot bring a free-speech challenge by claiming that the...

Taylor Swift has shattered virtually every major record in the music industry, and as she lives her best life supporting her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, she’s also breaking the brains of right-wingers.
For months now, the digital fever swamps have been fuming over everything and anything Swift-related. Her popularity, the success of the Eras Tour, her relationship, her appearances at NFL games, and especially her politics. The Chiefs won the AFC championship on Sunday, punching the team’s (and potentially Swift’s) ticket to the Super Bowl in February.

“I don’t think you can judge that from Barbie not getting nominated,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-ca) tonight to Bill Maher when asked by the host if the snub of the blockbuster’s director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie in the Oscars nominations means America is a patriarchy or not.
When Maher tried to link the Barbie discussion to Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 campaign, Schiff put things in real perspective on Real Time. “I would vote for a corned beef sandwich over Donald Trump,” he quipped to applause don’t say that lightly, but at least a corned beef sandwich would have some intelligence and wouldn’t be a dictator on Day one.”
Just days after a full debate between the leading candidates for California’s open Senate seat, Rep. Schiff found himself in the slightly warm seat again tonight on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher.

Many other Republican candidates have suspending their campaigns this cycle, but Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ exit inspired some pretty biting and snarky reactions today, coming from other politicos and some celebrities.
The reaction may be due to the fact that DeSantis focused so much of his campaign on the culture wars, taking on The Walt Disney Co. even though it is one of the largest employers in the Sunshine State. Or it was due to the fact that DeSantis and a SuperPAC supporting campaign poured tens of millions of dollars into the race, only to finish a distant second in Iowa and not even make it to the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary. Or it was that his campaign was the source of fodder for late-night comics and commentators, including his glitchy Twitter campaign kickoff and attention to his foot attire.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, ending a faltering bid where he tried to cast himself as a Trump-like candidate in a race where so much of the Republican base ended up preferring the real thing.
In a videotaped message posted this afternoon, DeSantis said that he was suspending his campaign and endorsing Donald Trump.
“It is clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” DeSantis said in the video, in which he thanked his staff and his wife and quoted Winston Churchill, kind of.
DeSantis’ exit leaves just Trump and former Un ambassador Nikki Haley in the race, with Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary likely to show whether the bid for the GOP nomination is all but over.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

In response, the governor replied that he was involved and that it was simply “behind the scenes.” He claimed that he met with many people from both unions and studios.

During a recent appearance on “Real Time With Bill Maher,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom addressed his role in resolving last year’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Maher asked Newsom why he didn’t get “more involved” in the strike negotiations, adding, “Why couldn’t the governor say, ‘This is an important industry in our state, one of our most important. You knuckleheads are gonna find a number that you agree on at some point, it always happens. Instead of putting these people out of work for all these months and all the suffering and heartache, can we just get it done today?’”
Newsom replied, “Well, we did all of that, except the knucklehead part, [and it] was expressed on multiple occasions, down here on many, many different occasions.”
The governor explained how his involvement was more “behind the scenes,” saying that he “absolutely” met with people from both the Hollywood unions and major studios.

Hollywood Democrats again might be facing conflicting loyalties and affinities, this time the race to fill the seat occupied for more than 30 years by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

Starting with Monday night’s first debate — sponsored by USC Dornsife, Fox 11 and Politico — that will see Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee and Republican Steve Garvey on the same stage, the coming weeks will see an accelerated schedule of events, advertising and fundraising.

One of the ghostwriter’s most valuable skills is getting their subjects to talk. So, when I gathered L.A.’s most successful ghostwriters at the Formosa Cafe to gossip, they knew all my tricks. In desperation, I went with the most transparent of all reporting techniques — buying them all fruity cocktails.
A reputation for discretion is not only how they get work, but how they avoid getting sued; they sign nondisclosure agreements for every memoir they write. But even if they revealed nothing scandalous about their famous clients — or at least nothing that couldn’t be discovered with a Google search — I learned a lot about the curious craft of ghostwriting and the types of personalities drawn to help famous people tell their life stories. Also, I learned why I am far too egotistical to do their job.

When Los Angeles voters head to the polls March 5 and again in the November general election, President Biden won’t have to sweat the results here and across the state. Nearly twice as many Californians are registered Democrat as they are Republican. In 2020, 71 percent of L.A. County voters picked Biden.
But Los Angeles remains popular for Democrats for reasons beyond ballot counting — it’s a fountain of campaign cash, much of it spouting from the entertainment industry. Consider that clutch of December fundraisers where co-hosts and attendees included such glossy names as Steven Spielberg, Shonda Rhimes, Jon Hamm and Barbra Streisand. The events may have taken place amid some grumbling over lagging poll numbers and questions about whether the octogenarian commander-in-chief can woo young voters, but ultimately the wallets opened wide. Media reports put the take from the soirees at about $15 million, a hefty part of the $97 million the campaign on Jan.

The Supreme Court agreed on Friday to weigh in on whether homeless individuals have the right to camp on public property. The issue is the biggest Scotus case in decades on the rights of the homeless, and the decision has the potential to impact how cities across the U.S. handle the homelessness crisis.
Grants Pass, located in southwestern Oregon with a population of nearly 40,000, requested that the high court review a lower court decision that ruled it unconstitutional to punish homeless residents for camping on public property when no shelter alternatives are unavailable.

Update: So much of this debate was about repetitive sparring between two Donald Trump alternatives, and the one-on-one match up made the event seem longer than others this cycle.
The debate had its moments where issues and philosophies were at the forefront, but Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis were so determined to go after each other that they lost their places at certain points. At one point DeSantis identified her as the former “governor of California.” DeSantis debated Gavin Newsom in November.
There were moments when they did attack the front runner, Donald Trump, albeit with far less of the determination of Chris Christie, who exited the race earlier on Wednesday.
Haley said that Trump would have to “answer for” what happened on that date. DeSantis bashed Trump for his “word vomit” social media post in which he said he would terminate the Constitution.

IATSE President Matthew Loeb did not mince words today when asked if his local unions were willing to strike if this spring’s contract negotiations with the AMPTP did not go well.

Hannity also hosted his Fox News primetime show from his remote studio in the Sunshine State, repeating some of the same comments about the benefits of Florida.

Update: Donald Trump will be on the California ballot for the state primary in March.
Late on Thursday, Secretary of State Shirley Weber released a list of certified candidates for the March 5 primary. Trump’s name was included on the list, released the same day that the secretary of state of another state, Shenna Bellows of Maine, said that the former president was ineligible to hold office.
Weber did not issue a statement on her decision to keep Trump on the ballot.
In the wake of a Colorado Supreme Court ruling that the former president was ineligible, California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis had called for Trump to be kept off the ballot. But Weber responded with a letter that suggested that it would be up to the courts to decide.

Elon Musk’s X failed to block a California law that requires social media companies to disclose their content-moderation policies.
U.S. District Judge William Shubb rejected the company’s request in an eight-age ruling on Thursday.
“While the reporting requirement does appear to place a substantial compliance burden on social medial companies, it does not appear that the requirement is unjustified or unduly burdensome within the context of First Amendment law,” Shubb wrote, per Reuters.

Independent presidential candidate Cornel West believes Joe Biden won’t be able to make it to the general election.
“I’m not even sure whether I’ll be running against Biden,” West told Politico. “Biden — I think he’s going to have an Lbj moment [and] pull back.”
West doesn’t think Biden can take the criticism from his more left-wing critics on how he’s handling the Israel-Hamas war and the economy.
He suggested he’s running against a “B” team opponents such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will run against him
“I’m just saying that I’m open to those possibilities, given the fluidity of the situation. He’s running out of gas,” West added.

A Los Angeles man remained jailed today for allegedly assaulting a man in his 70s in Beverly Hills in what police are calling an antisemitic attack.
The victim and his wife were in the area of North Rexford Drive and Santa Monica Boulevard at about 9 a.m. Saturday when the suspect — who had no relationship with the couple — made antisemitic statements to the victim, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department, whose station is located feet away from the site of the attack.
The man suffered a laceration on his head after being struck with a belt and was treated at the scene by Beverly Hills Fire Department paramedics. Police said he did not require hospitalization.
The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival, but was later arrested after being spotted by a Bhpd senior forensic specialist, according to police.
