Last year, author Grady Hendrix contributed the 29 page short story Ankle Snatcher (you can read it Here) to the Amazon Original Stories Creature Feature collection, which also featured stories by Joe Hill, Josh Malerman, Paul Tremblay, Jason Mott, and Chandler Baker. Now, Deadline reports that Sony has acquired the rights to make a feature film adaptation of Ankle Snatcher.
Hendrix’s story follows Marcus, who grew up believing his father killed his mother — then blamed it on the boogeyman under the bed. Always leave the lights on, his father warned, or the boogeyman will get you. Marcus still heeds the superstition, especially when he invites his new girlfriend over. Is Marcus haunted by a creature or has he just inherited his father’s murderous delusions? The night will tell.
Hendrix will be producing the film alongside Escape Artist’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Tony Shaw, and Aperture Entertainment’s Adam Goldworm.

Christopher Landon, the former director of Scream 7, will now helm the werewolf movie Big Bad. Landon stepped down from Scream 7 after the firing of star Melissa Barrera and the exit of Jenna Ortega. Big Bad could give Landon an opportunity to explore a new subgenre of horror after bringing many others to the screen.
Former Scream 7 director Christopher Landon has signed on to helm the new movie Big Bad. Although Landon was previously attached to direct the Scream sequel, he stepped down following production company Spyglass' decision to fire star Melissa Barrera after she shared pro-Palestine posts on social media. Shortly afterward, it was announced that her co-star Jenna Ortega had also dropped out of the project, for unspecified reasons.

Much like movies, television, and streaming platforms, it’s been a densely packed year for horror books as well. If the selection of horror movies available this year feels overwhelming, it pales in comparison to the horror renaissance that the book world offered this year.
The horror book industry has truly become more robust and expansive than ever, with 2023 bringing no shortage of fear-inducing reads through fiction and nonfiction alike.
Whether you’re in the mood for supernatural chills, slasher thrills, visceral terror, or insight into your favorite horror films and tropes, 2023 had it all.
Here are the ten best horror reads of the year.

My to-be-read pile is shamefully big, but that never stops me from adding more. I cherish getting lost in a good book, but a novel is more of a commitment than chipping away at movies on my to-watch list. The conspicuously titled 101 Horror Books to Read Before You’re Murdered may make that stack of books to read even more intimidating, but it also helps narrow down which tales of terror are worthy of being moved to the top.
Following a foreword by Bird Box author Josh Malerman, writer Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann explains why you should trust her choices implicitly. As the owner of the horror fiction subscription service Night Worms and the editor-in-chief of publisher Dark Hart Books, she’s an unassailable authority on horror literature — even if she’s a self-proclaimed scaredy cat who rarely watches genre movies.

Legendary Entertainment and Sam Raimi‘s Ghost House Pictures are teaming up to bring an adaptation of My Best Friend’s Exorcism author Grady Hendrix’s best-selling horror novel How to Sell a Haunted House to the screen, Variety reports. Hendrix is writing the screenplay adaptation himself, and James Ashcroft – who made his feature directorial debut with the 2021 horror film Coming Home in the Dark – is on board to direct.
Hendrix’s novel (pick up a copy Here) has the following description: When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. Best-selling horror author Grady Hendrix’s latest novel, How to Sell a Haunted House, was released earlier this year, and an adaptation is already on the way.
Legendary Entertainment won movie rights, per Variety, and tapped Coming Home in the Dark filmmaker James Ashcroft to helm the adaptation.
If that’s not intriguing enough, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures will produce the film with Hendrix (My Best Friend’s Exorcism) and Adam Goldworm’s Aperture Entertainment. Romel Adam and Jose Cañas will oversee for Ghost House.
Hendrix will adapt his own novel for the screen.
Fans of Hendrix’s novel know this is no ordinary haunted house.

Legendary Entertainment has won the movie rights to Grady Hendrix’s runaway bestseller “How to Sell a Haunted House.”
The studio behind “Dune” took the novel over several bids. The book received critical acclaim and an instant following thanks to its dynamic storytelling — pulling off genuine fright with its evil puppet antagonist, and a deeply emotional story about the horrors of family.
New Zealand-based Māori filmmaker James Ashcroft is attached to direct the project. Ashcroft made his mark in the indie genre space with the bleak “Coming Home in the Dark,” which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and was later acquired by Netflix. Hendrix will adapt his own novel for the screen.
“Hendrix has created a wholly original creature in Pupkin, one as iconic as Chuckie or Pennywise,” wrote The New York Times in its January review. “Pupkin represents the losses of growing up. He’s the vehicle of an unfulfilled mother’s pain,...

This month, in the Criterion Channel, there's a spotlight on Kwaidan, the Masaki Kobayashi classic that became the first significant example of Japanese horror to reach international audiences. You can find critic Grady Hendrix exploring the 1964 anthology on the streaming service, but that's far from the only reason you should check it out. Kwaidan collects four ghost stories that, together, form cinematic poetry of ravishing beauty. No wonder Kobayashi's film has entranced The Film Experience for years. Dancin' Dan once wrote about Kwaidan for the Oscar Horrors series, Nathaniel and Juan Carlos discussed it in podcast form, and I highlighted its costuming for an idealized Oscar ballot.
Still, it's never a wrong time to re-consider Kwaidan, to get lost anew in its visual splendor...

With “Evil Dead Rise” earning good reviews (96% and 7.5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes) and solid buzz out of its SXSW premiere, New Line wasted no time in locking down director Lee Cronin’s next feature. Next up will be an original horror film, titled “Thaw,” for which Cronin will rewrite the current draft.
The picture, originally written by Jeremy Passmore, is set years after the polar ice caps have melted with concurrent rising sea levels. “Thaw” centers on a group of survivors at sea searching for a new home. They discover an inhabitable town only to realize… well this isn’t “Waterworld” folks.
Van Toffler and David Gale of Gunpowder & Sky as well as Adam Goldworm of Aperture, who produced HBO’s upcoming adaptation of Grady Hendrix’s novel “The Final Girl Support Group,” are producing.

The upcoming Crystal Lake prequel series will feature an appearance by the final girl from the original Friday the 13th. The 1980 film, which follows Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) murdering counselors at Camp Crystal Lake as revenge for the supposed drowning of her son Jason (Ari Lehman), starred Adrienne King as Alice Hardy, the only survivor of the massacre. Alice is a capable young woman who ends up decapitating Pamela before escaping onto the lake in a canoe. She returns in the opening sequence of 1981's Friday the 13th Part 2, where she was killed off by a now grown-up Jason.
Yesterday, Fandom's Eric Goldman reported from a Los Angles screening of 1982's Friday the 13th Part III which featured a Q&a with cast members from the film as well as Bryan Fuller, who is a writer and producer on Crystal Lake, which is being developed with A24 and Peacock.

Elsie Fisher shines as Abby in Prime Video's "My Best Friend's Exorcism," the new horror film based on the novel by Grady Hendrix. It's their second horror movie this year, after February's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" remake, though Fisher tells Popsugar they didn't plan to start starring in so many films in the genre.
"I've definitely become a massive horror fan," they explain. "It's such an interesting genre and really affects people in this way that you really can't get with other kinds of films." Fisher has a theory about why the genre is so popular, especially with young people. "It's probably a reflection of the state of the world right now," Fisher guesses about why they're so drawn to horror films. "I feel like the world is pretty scary at the moment." Fisher says it's a genre that has to keep evolving to stay fresh, and it's "really beautiful" to...

, high school horror-comedy “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” isn’t funny enough to get away with so few genuine scares, and it isn’t scary enough to save most of its biggest laughs for the final act (where they’re laundered through one of the only male characters in this story about the effects of misogynistic self-loathing on female friendships).
But that alone isn’t reason enough to write off the year’s first taste of Halloween candy, which often benefits from the low expectations of direct-to-streaming content, and sometimes — in amusingly shocking ways — manages to exceed them. Whenever I was ready to dismiss this ’80s throwback as a piece of distinctly 21st century filler, Elsie Fisher would suddenly tap into my deepest teenage insecurities, scream “the power of Boy George compels you!” in an effort to chase a demon out of another girl’s body, or step aside to reveal...

As "Jennifer's Body" scribe Diablo Cody once wrote, "Hell is a teenage girl." So much happens at that hectic age — bodies rapidly grow into self-aware and self-consciousness beings exploring sexuality, identities, and a desire for autonomy. All of this unfolds as teens are acutely aware of how socially acceptable they are and to whom. I remember how acne felt like a death sentence. For teens, knowing who to speak to, and when, is vital — a stealth mission in navigating the murky waters of popularity. Make the wrong move, and you've sunk your battleship, along with any hope of having weekend plans. Social rejection felt like a powerfully fatal curse.

Elsie Fisher and ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism’ Cast Embrace the ’80s at Carnival-Themed Premiere Party
Though many of them weren’t even alive in the 1980s, the cast of “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” said it was a dream come true to recreate the era for their new film.
Now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, the horror-comedy held its world premiere Thursday night at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica as part of the 2022 Beyond Fest Film Festival. The afterparty was held at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, where guests could play carnival games and feast on funnel cakes and nachos.

In an industry that frequently sees 20 and 30-year-olds playing high schoolers, Elsie Fisher is the rare performer who acts her own age. To that effect, she’s made a name for herself with her tenderly studied portrayals of unlikely teen protagonists: the soft-spoken Kayla Day in Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade”; the daughter of Annie Wilkes in Stephen King’s “Castle Rock”; and Lila, the “final girl” in 2022’s “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
With “My Best Friend’s Exorcism,” Fisher brings humanity to horror once again as Abby, a sophomore hell-bent on rescuing her best friend Gretchen (Amiah Miller) from demonic possession. Based on the book by Grady Hendrix, the film is a fresh take on the exorcism and teen horror flicks of the ‘70s and ‘80s, weaving in subjects like sexual assault, religious repression and queerness from a contemporary perspective.

Author Grady Hendrix described his second novel, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, as “Beaches meets The Exorcist.” It emphasized sentimentality and humor over scares, though it wasn’t afraid to inject a few frights. The adaptation tries to faithfully capture the events of the book within its constraints and format, but this rushed retelling struggles to worm its way into your heart.

Stronger in concept than execution, “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” is, as fans of Grady Hendrix’s YA source novel already know, studded with entertaining ideas. But while there’s certainly enough talent involved, the film adaptation can’t seem to coalesce around the cleverness and insight that made Hendrix’s book a bestseller.
Though this is the first feature from director Damon Thomas, he’s had plenty of experience in sharp, female-focused screen horror, as a director and executive producer of “Killing Eve” and “Penny Dreadful.” The same goes for writer Jenna Lamia, making her movie debut after working on shows like “Awkward” and “Good Girls.”
There’s also the unfulfilled promise of lead Elsie Fisher (“Eighth Grade”), who is — through no fault of her own — miscast and misdirected as Abby, a self-conscious high school sophomore in 1988. Abby, who is alienated enough already, is broken-hearted about the fact that her...

Announced by Arrow Video this morning, Ju-On: The Grudge Collection is due out this December, featuring a brand new 4K restoration of Japanese classic Ju-On: The Grudge.
This one is a UK Release, headed our way on December 19, 2022.
“Ju-On”: the name given to a deadly curse spawned when someone dies in the grip of a violent rage. All who come into contact with it are doomed… Collected together for the first time, writer-director Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On: The Grudge series represents the flesh-crawling pinnacle of Japanese chillers that swept the globe at the turn of the millennium.
The films introduce the anonymous family house in the suburbs of Tokyo where an unspeakable evil lingers alongside its residents, the ghastly mother-son pairing of Kayoko and Toshio Saeki. Shimizu’s disconcerting approach to plotting, unnerving eye for the uncanny details in the dark corners of the frame and an innate talent...

Fans of Grady Hendrix's novel My Best Friend's Exorcism should anticipate some changes in Prime Video's film adaptation. Star Elsie Fisher said as much to E! News while discussing the new movie's Sept. 30 premiere. "That's totally the struggle with adapting any book," Elsie, who plays Abby in the film, said. "I think the structure of a film has to be a little more formulaic." However, before you get too concerned about the new adaptation, Elsie assured E! News that the My Best Friend's Exorcism movie really tried to "stay as faithful as possible" to the source material. The Eighth Grade star hinted that the film "ends on a...

The high-school and scary movies of the 1980s are wittily evoked in this tale of teenagers tested by demonic possession
Not quite a spoof, My Best Friend’s Exorcism is a horror comedy that pays almost pitch-perfect homage to the high-school and scary movies that dominated the 1980s. Adapted from Grady Hendrix’s novel about teenage friendship and loyalty tested by demonic possession, it is superfun with a couple of comedy performances that nail it.
Elsie Fisher plays likable everygirl Abby, a plain, spotty self-conscious scholarship kid at a posh Catholic school. Her popular, beautiful and occasionally mean best friend is Gretchen (Amiah Miller). On a visit to a cabin by a lake, after a spin on the Ouija board, Abby and Gretchen dare each other to go into a creepy building in the woods. Gretchen emerges with lank hair and cracked lips (dead giveaways of demonic possession). Then she starts acting like a capital-b bitch,...

Plot: After a wild night of LSD and a trip to an abandoned building, Gretchen comes back acting different. Her best friend Abby must try and to save her. If she even can.
Review: I’ve really been looking forward to My Best Friend’s Exorcism for quite some time. Grady Hendrix‘s book has great reviews and the announcement of the cast sealed the deal. But what I didn’t expect was how exceptionally made the film is. What could have been a shallow look at possession in the 90s, turns into a character study that uses the time period as a way to further the story at every turn. And I was on board for every minute.
Exorcism stories have never been easy to pull off. Outside of The Exorcist, there are very few films that live up to the concept. Thankfully, My Best Friend’s Exorcism really...

The recent outpouring of love for Netflix’s Do Revenge has demonstrated that there’s an appetite for a modern and more malevolent take on the classic teen movies we revere. My Best Friend’s Exorcism is the latest example of this pleasing new twist on the genre and, although far from perfect, it’s an endearing and entertaining ride.
Abby (Elsie Fisher) and Gretchen (Amiah Miller) have been as close as sisters since fourth grade and have every reason to believe they’ll be best friends forever. So far they’ve supported one another through acne, body dysmorphia, religious zeal, inappropriate crushes and high school…there’s no reason to think that a little thing like demonic possession will come between them.
Margaret (Rachel Ogechi Kanu) and Glee (Cathy Ang) round out their friendship group and together the girls form a supportive and tight unit; essential for surviving life at their uptight,...

We may joke that teen girls are possessed, but the creators behind “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” take that concept to heart. Based on the book by Grady Hendrix, director Damon Thomas’ adaptation is centered on a pair of inseparable best friends dealing with a shattering blow when one of them is overtaken by a satanic spirit. Though this ’80s-set horror-comedy takes an old-school approach to capturing the horrific happenings, the stunts are lackluster and the comedic hijinks are a tiresome bore. With very little interest conjured from the filmmakers to properly develop their characters, there’s little incentive to stay interested.
Abby’s (Elsie Fisher) greatest fear in life is losing her best friend Gretchen (Amiah Miller). Little does she know their relationship will be put to the test, and not solely because Gretchen’s scheduled to move over the summer. The pair are in a world of their own,...

The “Bff Quiz” was a staple of the Eighties teen girl magazine. Back then, the media treated young women with open contempt. Female friendship was deemed too fickle and too poisonous to be determined by feelings – no, the only way to know if your bestie was really your bestie was to have them answer 12 hypothetical questions. Would they tell you if your new Esprit skirt was actually hideous? Would they get jealous if you started dating one of the popular boys? Would they douse your body in holy water if a supernatural entity took possession of your soul?
In My Best Friend’s Exorcism, banishing demons is the ultimate test of teen girl loyalty. It’s a devilishly smart and self-aware take on the current trend for Eighties horror homage, lovingly adapted from Grady Hendrix...

According to your calendar, Autumn officially began this week. I know, I know… Nature itself may disagree, like say in the form of triple-digit temperatures that make the average trip to the mailbox feel like a 5K through Hell itself. But we’ll do our best to put you in the mind of falling leaves, cool breezes, millions of pumpkin-spice-laced products… and new movies coming in Fall 2022.
Anyhow, we like to think Fall is a state of mind – and what better way to escape summer suffering than a trip to the movies, or an air-conditioned chill session on a comfy sofa? Okay, other methods might exist, but that’s for another site. We’re all about cinema here – so let’s get down to the only calendar that really matters: a list of upcoming movies we’d like to check out this season.

Prime Video has debuted the trailer for ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism,’ based on the novel from New York Times best-selling author Grady Hendrix.
Surviving the teenage years isn’t easy, especially when you’re possessed by a demon. It’s 1988, and best friends Abby (Elsie Fisher) and Gretchen (Amiah Miller) are navigating boys, pop culture, and a paranormal force clinging to Gretchen like a pair of neon legwarmers. With assistance from overly confident mall exorcist Christian Lemon (Christopher Lowell), Abby is determined to compel the demon back to the pits of hell—if it doesn’t kill Gretchen first. At turns horrifying and hilarious.
The movie pays homage to 1980s pop culture with a totally timeless tale of terror and true friendship.
Directed by Damon Thomas and written by Jenna Lamia, the film stars Elsie Fisher, Amiah Miller, Cathy Ang, Rachel Ogechi Kanu (Cheer for Your Life), and Christopher Lowell.

"Hot damn, we got ourselves a demon!" Amazon has reveled the official trailer for My Best Friend's Exorcism, a teen horror comedy arriving on Prime Video this fall. It's adapted from Grady Hendrix's novel of the same name, and is skipping theaters entirely for a streaming debut. The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes wrong, Gretchen begins to act… different. She's moody. She's irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she's nearby. By the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil? The film stars Elsie Fisher (from Eighth Grade) as Abby, Amiah Miller as Gretchen, Cathy Ang, Rachel Ogechi Kanu, and Christopher Lowell. This defintiely does look like something that belongs on streaming,...
