Before embarking on a career in politics which led to him becoming a two-term Democratic senator for Minnesota, Al Franken was best-known for his two separate stints as a Saturday Night Live writer and cast member – 1975 to 1980 and again from 1985 to 1995.
Franken resigned from the Senate back in 2018 amid allegations of sexual misconduct, and now has a podcast, aptly named the Al Franken Podcast. He also recently kicked off a standup tour, An Evening of New Stand-up With Al Franken, which is making stops at City Winery locations across the country through the summer.
Franken spoke with Forbes about his new tour and addressed the current state of SNL’s Weekend Update segment, with which Franken was closely associated during his many years on the show.
The segment became increasingly political while Franken worked on it, something which continues to this day.

Colin Jost-Pete Davidson Staten Island Ferry Bar-Hotel-Restaurant Project Still Afloat, Says Partner
The Staten Island Ferry floating nightclub project of Colin Jost and Pete Davidson – the subject of at least one “guy who bought a boat” joke on Jost’s Weekend Update – might be a bit closer to setting sail, heavy emphasis on “might.”
In an interview with Curbed, Ron Castellano, the architect and partner of Davidson and Jost’s decommissioned ferry project, told Curbed this week that plans are still underway for what could be a $34 million renovation project that would turn the rusty ferry into a luxury oasis of bars, restaurants a maybe a hotel.
Jost and Davidson – famously Staten Islanders – rescue-purchased the soon-to-be junked vessel two years ago for just under $300,000, announcing plans for a floating entertainment vessel.
Since then, various media reports have suggested that the project was going no place fast, reports Castellano dismisses in the new interview.

Pete Davidson and Colin Jost’s decommissioned ferry boat may be docked silently in Staten Island right now, but the vessel is headed for a $34 million renovation that features multiple bars, restaurants and a hotel.
Ron Castellano, an architect and lesser known partner on Davidson and Jost’s ferry project, told Curbed this week that he’s still finalizing plans to remodel the inside of the group’s 1965 boat.
“I think right now, we have six bars and two venues operated separately or combined,” he said. “We have outdoor event space, we have restaurants — two restaurants. It’s a big boat, almost 300 feet long, 65,000 square feet.”
Castellano’s firm, Studio Castellano, lists the “JFK Ferry” as a project with a budget of $34 million. To Curbed, Castellano detailed plans for a furnished patio top deck, 24 hotel rooms with sundecks and two clubs spaced across the lower levels. He said the team...

Some concrete plans are actually starting to emerge for the decommissioned Staten Island ferry that Pete Davidson and Colin Jost bought back in 2022.
While the intent was to turn it into some kind of floating entertainment complex, for the past two years, the ferry has ostensibly just been sitting there. It’s been docked in Staten Island — where both Jost and Davidson grew up — and locals have reportedly said they haven’t seen anyone working on it.

Saturday Night Live stars Pete Davidson and Colin Jost finally have plans for the decommissioned Staten Island Ferry they bought in January 2022. The comedians purchased the boat in an auction for $280,000, according to The New York Times, and now have plans to turn it into a $34 million multi-functional venue, including hotel rooms, two restaurants, and six bars. Ron Castellano, an architect who is working with Jost and Davidson on the project, recently spoke with Curbed to provide an update on the ferry, which Davidson once referred to as “a life-long problem for me and Colin.” “It’s going to have a lot of things,” Castellano told the publication. “I think right now, we have six bars and two venues operated separately or combined. We have outdoor event space, we have restaurants — two restaurants. It’s a big boat, almost 300 feet long, 65,000 square feet. That’s one and a half times...

It was two years ago news first broke that SNL cast members and Staten Island natives Colin Jost and Pete Davidson had purchased a Staten Island Ferry in hopes of turning it into an entertainment venue. Since then, various reports have surfaced of no progress being made, of rats and asbestos in the boat, and even Davidson himself claiming he made the purchase while stoned and that it had left him “in the hole.”
Built in 1965, the boat was decommissioned and auctioned off by the city for $280,100. But Davidson and Jost didn’t foot the bill alone: They had joined up with Paul Italia, co-founder of NYC comedy club The Stand, and a fourth partner.
Curbed has now tracked down that fourth partner, Ron Castellano, to finally get some answers on what’s going down with the ship. The good news is, they are making progress after all.

CAA is adding to its ranks.
The agency has hired Saraphina Monaco as an agent in its television talent department. She’ll be based at CAA’s Century City office and will focus on identifying and creating acting opportunities for the agency’s comedy touring clients — which includes several A-list comedians — in film and television.
Monaco joins CAA from A3 Artists Agency, where she spent five years as a talent agent in its theatrical division. The agency ceased operations in February. Prior to that, Monaco worked at Buchwald, in both its New York and Los Angeles offices, and Prestige Talent Agency. She began her career as an assistant at Aquila/Wood Casting and also has experience at a few boutique agencies.

Alabama senator Katie Britt delivered a widely-panned Republican response to the State of the Union address this past Thursday, and shortly after it was complete, the internet demanded that Saturday Night Live spoof the senator’s response.
Ask and you shall receive.
A-list actress (and Mrs. Colin Jost) Scarlett Johansson surprised the audience by delivering a memorable performance as the beleaguered senator during the March 9 episode’s cold open.
Viewers flocked to the sketch show this past weekend, perhaps in anticipation of a Sen. Britt trolling. Hosted by Dune: Part Two star Josh Brolin with musical guest Ariana Grande, the March 9, 2024 episode of Saturday Night Live averaged 4,670,000 total viewers and 940,000 P18-49 viewers, according to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen. Those numbers will grow substantially as delayed viewing data trickles in over the next week.
Out of the 14 SNL episodes that have aired this season to-date, The March 9 episode comes in at No.

Of course Saturday Night Live went there.
When someone hangs a piñata stuffed with irresistible goodies right in front of your eyes, and an Aaron Judge size baseball bat to smash it with, what else can you do but swing away?
The cold open Saturday night was always going to feature a parody of Katie Britt describing America’s descent into an apocalyptic hellscape from her spotless, lifeless kitchen–because the laughs were there for the picking.
But credit where it’s due: SNL elevated the bit to memorable status by recreating the Alabama Senator’s weird theatrics and creepy demeanor—not to mention every detail of her startlingly expensive- but banal-looking kitchen—and casting an imported major movie star to assume the role, Scarlett Johansson. (Straight from Colin Jost’s kitchen.)

Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update took aim at Donald Trump’s bizarre moment at the southern border this week, as well as Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell announcing he’ll step down as his party’s Senate leader.
Trump, who toured the Texas-Mexico border Thursday alongside the increasingly militant Gov. Greg Abbott, at one point waved at migrants through a barbed wire fence and claimed, “They like Trump, can you believe it?”

Michael Che and Colin Jost had a running gag on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update,” cracking jokes about Mitch McConnell who announced earlier this week he was stepping down as Senate Republican leader.
Every time the photo of McConnell appeared on screen, the SNL duo made a joke about what had the senator so happy during that moment. Che started the gag, saying McConnell was “catching up on news from the Middle East.”
“McConnell has been leader for almost 20 years, but he first got involved in politics back in 1968 when he lost a fiddle contest to the devil,” Che quipped.
Jost continued the gag saying, “Mitch McConnell seen here walking out of a theater after watching 12 Years a Slave.”
“He’ll be replaced by the current number two Republican in the Senate, a frozen embryo holding an assault rifle,” Jost joked.

Tom Sandoval of Vanderpump Rules was name-dropped on Saturday Night Live during the “Weekend Update” segment with Marcello Hernández making a reference to the Bravo star.
Hernández appeared during the weekly segment as a frozen embryo from Alabama after the state’s Supreme Court ruled that embryos are the legal equivalent of a child.
When Colin Jost asked the embryo who his parents were, they said, “No, but based on my accent and size, I’m going to guess Sofía Vergara and an oompa loompa.”
The reference to Sandoval came after Jost asked the embryo if it felt like a full human life.
“Does this look like a life to you Colin? I’m living at negative 200 degrees in liquid nitrogen, freezing my non-existent nipples off. I don’t got a brain, I don’t got a heart. I’m like Tom Sandoval,” Hernández said as the embryo.

A politically charged segment during the Feb. 24 episode of “Saturday Night Live” contained some brutal jokes about Tom Sandoval, the “Vanderpump Rules” cad who cheated on his longtime girlfriend with her friend and fellow cast member, the fallout of which elevated his profile to pop culture supervillain.
The barbs came during a sketch taking aim at the controversial decision by the Alabama Supreme Court this week that now considers frozen embryos created during in vitro fertilization to be children.
“SNL” featured player Marcello Hernandez dropped by Weekend Update as a “frozen embryo from Alabama” in order to talk about his existence and how it differs from humans.
“I don’t got a brain, I don’t got a heart, I’m like Tom Sandoval,” the embryo quipped.
“So you watch ‘Vanderpump Rules?'” Weekend Update anchor Colin Jost asked incredulously.

Shane Gillis’ meant-to-be-triumphant return to the Saturday Night Live stage this weekend was a mixed bag of humor, some of which landed with a thud — like any episode of the long-running show — and a couple of good laughs.
Much of the show’s sketches took the comedian and podcaster’s white-bro shtick and dialed it back a tad — ultimately finding a sweet spot closer to the line that his routine crosses. Gillis made a strong effort in his return to Studio 8H on Saturday night, but he struggled throughout his monologue and was visibly anxious as he pivoted to new topics. Ribbing his dad, who sat with his mother to support him in one of his bigger career moments, didn’t go over well — yes, having a dad who’s a girl’s basketball coach might be pretty funny to you, Shane, but it’s not really to everyone else.

Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update went after former President Donald Trump’s wild campaign rhetoric, as well as the Alabama Supreme Court ruling this week that frozen embryos created through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) are human beings.
Co-anchor Colin Jost began by quipping that, after Trump won the South Carolina primary earlier in the night, he “is now undefeated everywhere except court.”
Of the former president’s recent hyperbolic comments, Jost joked that they reminded him of somebody: the comic book supervillain Bane.

Colin Jost and Michael Che poked fun at pop culture and the news on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” segment, where Paramount+ was dinged, and Donald Trump continued to be a target of jokes.
Jost brought up the lawsuit that the stars of 1968’s Romeo and Juliet brought upon Paramount Pictures to prevent the digital release of the film containing explicit images of them while they were teenagers.
“Paramount has agreed to lock it away where no one will ever see it — Paramount+,” Jost quipped.
The duo opened the weekly segment by taking jabs at Trump by acknowledging the Republican presidential candidate won the South Carolina primary, “which means that Trump is now undefeated, everywhere except court.”
Jost then played a clip of Trump showcasing “a more moderate [and] unifying tone” to take on the general election.

Colin Jost and Michael Che had a field day roasting Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” segment.
The topic at the top of the show was news that Trump was ordered to pay $83 million to E. Jean Carroll in the defamation trial.
“Trump is a billionaire, so obviously, he immediately hit up your grandma for five bucks,” Jost joked, referring to Trump hitting up his followers to donate to his presidential campaign.
Jost continued saying that the jury ordered Trump to pay that much because “that’s how unlikeable he is,” adding, “For perspective, Oj Simpson only had to pay $33 million for double murder.”
“He didn’t even do it,” Che chimed in, making Jost laugh.
Jost even took a jab at Trump’s courtroom sketch that was released, saying that they “made him look like that lady who got her face ripped off by a monkey.

“Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” crashing host Dakota Johnson’s opening monologue as she bantered with the night’s musical guest, Justin Timberlake.
